2017 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).
The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.
Nameplate etymology
Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).
A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common 2017 Volkswagen Jetta problems
The 2017 Volkswagen Jetta has several common problems that owners have reported. One of the most significant issues is rodents destroying the soy-based wiring. This problem is more expensive to repair than in other compact cars due to the higher cost of parts. The repair cost can range from $50 to $2,000, depending on the extent of the damage. To prevent this issue, it is recommended to use battery-operated small strobe lights in the engine compartment to deter rodents.
Another common problem with the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta is wheel speed sensor failures. This issue typically occurs around 25,000 miles and requires replacing the sensor, which costs around $550, depending on local labor rates.
Squeaking doors are also a common complaint from some Jetta owners, particularly around 10,000 miles. This problem is caused by door hinges being out of alignment, and the solution is to re-align the door hinges, which can be done for under $50 by most dealerships.
The 2017 Volkswagen Jetta has also had 7 recalls, with the most serious one covering fuel rail bolts that can loosen, causing fuel lines to leak. Volkswagen will replace the bolts as necessary on affected models.
In-car electronics are another problem area for the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta, with issues such as the infotainment system not recognizing phones, backup cameras being blurry, and touch screens freezing or becoming unresponsive. These problems can affect the use of features such as GPS, phone pairing, and internal navigation systems.
Overall, the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta has several common problems that owners have reported. While these issues can be frustrating, many of them can be resolved with relatively simple repairs or replacements. However, the cost of parts and labor can be higher than in other compact cars, so it is essential to factor these costs into any decision to purchase or maintain a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta.

- Summary: The fuel rail system came loose, causing fuel to spray in engine bay, as well as loss of power to propel vehicle forward. Original recall for 2016-2018 Volkswagens Jetta’s fuel rail coming loose due to bolts loosening over time was opened in April 2020. Car was taken to Brandon Tomes Volkswagen of McKinney as soon as recall was received. A few years later, the fuel rail system still came loose and the car now is at my personal mechanic shop due to Brandon Tomes saying the had seen the car for the recall. I do not trust Brandon Tomes with my vehicle at this point in time to do fix the issue, if they even actually did anything when the car was in for the recall when the recall was initiated. If they did, and the bolts still came loose, then the original recall may need to be investigated and to see if there are multiple more units affected by the recall that have been seen for the recall and put as recall completed, only to have the issue arise at a later time.

The Jetta TSi is equipped with a strong 1.4 liter turbocharged engine and a Tiptronic automatic transmission, making it the perfect choice. It can obtain over 40 mpg on the highway, with the best gas mileage being 41.6 mpg while cruising at 73 mph. I would definitely consider buying another one!

I recently purchased a Jetta SEL on an end of summer deal through Edmunds pricing request. The dealer honored the price and it was a steal! The car drives very well, and the new engine and transmission combination is excellent. Although there are some aspects of the car that could be improved, overall I am very pleased with the driving experience. The SEL trim level is worth the extra price, with key-less operation, sunroof, and navigation. The fuel economy is very good at just over 30 mpg, and it uses regular which is great as gas prices are now rising. The driver seat could be more comfortable, but the brakes are excellent. After 10 months and 10k miles, all systems work perfectly and I have no complaints. There are no rattles, buzzes, or other annoying noises. The technology in the SEL is excellent, with adaptive cruise, blind spot, and automatic emergency braking all working perfectly. I highly recommend this car, and suggest getting ready to catch the end of summer sale. Although the 2019 model is all new, I'm still a happy 2018 Jetta owner.

Hey there! Just a friendly tip - you might want to avoid getting the cloth seats. They can be a bit tricky to clean and sometimes cleaning them can actually make them look worse. Hope this helps!

I'm so glad to hear that you love this car! It's great to hear that you and your sister both own one. Thank you for sharing your positive experience, and please let us know if there's anything we can do to help.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your loaded GLI! It sounds like it's been a great purchase for you. Even though you were new to the car and the brand, it's wonderful to hear that you're having fun driving it and finding it to be powerful and reliable. While it may not be the best choice for hauling big items, it seems like it's meeting your needs perfectly. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

I just got back from a trip from Ohio to D.C. At some point, I wasn't sure if the car would make it back. I noticed that the cruise control doesn't work while driving down long downhill areas in PA state if you don't take I-70 toll. On uphill driving, the transmission slips, with or without cruise control. This morning, it was slipping while driving on a flat surface, which didn't happen before. I took my Jetta to the VW dealer and they said they will investigate it, but most likely it's nothing. This is the third dealer I've been to, and the previous two didn't want to take a look at the transmission issue. It's frustrating, but I'm hopeful that they will find a solution. Another issue I've noticed is that the front rotors are made of cheap metal and they tend to wobble. Despite these issues, I still enjoy leasing my Jetta because it's a neat looking car. However, I do wish that VW would improve its reliability. I've talked to other Jetta TSI drivers and they all had manual transmissions because they had experienced automatic transmission failures in the past. This is my first VW, and I'm not sure if I would buy another one if it fails. I'm hoping that my car will last until the end of the lease, but I'm considering getting a Japanese car next time. Lastly, I would recommend not using synthetic Mobil oil because it doesn't work well with these engines. Instead, search for a dealer with oil change coupons. Here in D.C., it's only $46, which is the same as Walmart, but you'll save time. Good oil is important for these engines because VW has plastic parts inside, such as the chain tensioner. I'm curious to know how long this part will last.

Hey there! I noticed that you mentioned some issues with the car, but I was wondering if you could provide more information about the engine block casting defects that can cause seizing and loss of control? Thank you!

The car is experiencing some issues with its handling and automatic transmission. Despite having new tires and following VW recommendations for tire pressure, the car feels unstable on the highway and the steering wheel is unresponsive. Additionally, the automatic transmission is slipping between gears. While shifting to Sport mode helps on the highway, it is still a concern. The dealer has suggested trading in the car due to potential issues with the turbo, which they claim is not reliable and may need to be replaced around 100,000 miles. As the car is still under 15,000 miles, it is important to address these issues promptly. Seeking a second opinion from a trusted mechanic may be a good idea. It is important to take action to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

I had a leased VW Jetta that started making a strange clunking sound at around 10,000 miles. Unfortunately, the transmission continued to slip even more at 25,000 miles. Despite my concerns, the VW dealer dismissed the issue as normal, while a mechanic told me that all VWs tend to have transmission problems. I was disappointed with this experience, especially since I had just purchased a Golf Rabbit 2.5 (4 doors) and its transmission failed the day after I registered it. During the test drive, I thought the clunking was normal, but it turned out to be a serious issue. Both transmissions were not serviceable, which made matters worse. I decided to trade in the Rabbit for a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and will soon terminate the lease on the Jetta. I have decided to avoid VWs and other Euro brands in the future, as my previous experience with SAAB was also a mistake. Although they may look cute, their reliability is zero, and their services are expensive. For instance, an oil change costs $86 + tax, and if you don't have it done at a VW dealer, they will void your warranty.
