Nissan Pathfinder problems

The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.
The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.
In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

Common Nissan Pathfinder problems
The Nissan Pathfinder, a crossover/SUV produced since 1986, is known for its reliability. However, like any vehicle, it has faced certain issues over the years. This article, based on search results, outlines common problems with the Nissan Pathfinder, focusing on complaints from owners and available solutions.
- Navigation system problems: The 2017 Pathfinder has been reported to have issues with the navigation display, including freezing controls, a stuck backup camera, and a malfunctioning reverse assist display.
- Transmission issues: The 2005-2010 model years, in particular, have faced transmission problems. The automatic transmissions may fail around 90,000 miles due to a crack in the oil cooler tube, causing coolant to leak into the transmission system.
- Climate system failure: A/C and heating system issues have been reported by many 2015 Pathfinder owners. The climate system may refuse to work, causing significant problems during extreme temperatures.
- CVT issues: Nissan's CVT issues have been widespread, affecting the Pathfinder's transmission system. The CVT system has been reported to be slow to respond, overheat easily, and shutter while accelerating. This can be a safety risk during highway merges and may cause constant stuttering.
- Timing chain issues: Pathfinder owners have reported issues with the timing chain guides, shoes, and tensioners. A loose timing chain can cause rattling or acceleration issues, and even lead to engine failure.
- Engine stalled and doesn't restart: This issue is caused by contaminated contacts in the engine control module (ECM) and the ignition relay in the IPDM. The ECM and the ignition relay will need to be replaced, which is a fiddly DIY job, but can be done with the right parts and online guides.
- Driver's power seat harness fault: The driver's power seat harness can become trapped between the seat lifter mechanism and the metal seat bracket. If left unattended, this can cause damage to the harness and potentially lead to accidents. Separating the harness from where it's trapped or replacing it with a new one can resolve the issue.
- Whining power steering: This issue, which Nissan is largely ignoring, can be resolved by fitting a new insulator on the power steering module. Some drivers have managed to fix the problem this way.
- Gearbox shuddering: This issue, which is a computer programming problem, can be resolved by having the computer checked and software updated at a Nissan dealer.
- Fuel and temp gauges problems: This issue is caused by a failure with the voltage regulator behind the dashboard. Replacing the voltage regulator will sort the problem out.
- Timing chain wear: Later models of the Pathfinder are prone to premature timing chain wear, usually around the 102,000-mile point. Replacing a worn timing chain is a big job, but it's more wallet-friendly to order a new belt and fit it yourself than hand the car over to a mechanic.
- Brake pedal issues: Some Pathfinders have a defect that causes the clevis pin to come loose from the brake pedal and brake booster input rod assembly. This can be resolved by reattaching the clevis pin and securing it into place with a new clip.
In conclusion, while the Nissan Pathfinder is generally a reliable vehicle, certain model years and issues have been reported by owners. Regular maintenance and addressing these issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the Pathfinder.

I was very lucky that nothing happened, but I'm very concerned about driving this vehicle and the potential danger it poses to myself and others if this happens again. I believe this is a serious issue and should be looked into with urgency. I've attached pictures of where the pedal snapped off. It appears to be a cheaply made piece of plastic that completely broke off. There is another picture with the pedal intact and circled in red, you can see an indentation towards the top of the pedal. This is where I believe the pedal broke off from.

Vehicle year: 2017
We purchased this vehicle used in January 2017 with approximately 7200 miles on it, as a replacement for our 2005 Pathfinder. After waiting a year and taking a long road trip, we can confidently say that this vehicle has served us well for our regular family of four needs. We often take day trips for our daughter's high school band competitions throughout the spring and fall semesters, and the vehicle has performed exceptionally well in those situations. Our real test came in December 2018 when we took a road trip from northern California to Iowa for the holidays, covering approximately 2000 miles over 2.5 days there and then 1.5 weeks later, approximately 2000 miles over 3 days back. The vehicle handled the mountain passes (interstate roads) great and the long days of traveling (approximately 10-12 hours driving time per day). We averaged about 23-24 mpg for the whole trip. The convenience features really served us well, especially the remote-start where it heats up the inside when it was very cold outside. Navigation was very good and got us to where we needed to go. We did notice, however, that the estimated time of arrival seems to be greatly over-estimated because over the day, we shaved off almost 1.5 hours each day. Perhaps it's meant to over-estimate based on actual speed limit of the roads versus one's actual rate of speed. The only negative with the navigation is that it could have better integration with our phones (android and apple) versus having to use the Nissan navigation. But we do have the Nissan Connect Services (NCS) app so we can get directions directly to the vehicle (along with remote-start, remote lock-unlock, and other vehicle alerts and maintenance updates). The NCS app also offers alerts, if you set it up, for vehicle speed limits, find my vehicle, and boundary alert if the vehicle goes further than a specified boundary (for example, if you valet park your vehicle). There is an option to send directions from Google Maps to the car, which unfortunately I haven't been able to get working yet. However, I haven't had to bring it in for assistance since we manage maps/navigation with NCS and manually enter directions in the vehicle. Overall, I think it's a great vehicle with great reliability. It was able to handle a 4,000 mile road trip and get my family safely back home.

I got an 08 for my hubs because of the great deal we got. Our love affair with Nissan began! Unfortunately, someone turned in front of him when it was only a week old, but it was a minor issue that was easily fixed. When I got mine, I told the salesperson that I didn't want a black or Pathfinder (since my husband already had one). Well, I didn't have enough money for an Armada, so I ended up with my black Pathfinder LE! I've had it for 2.5 years and I am absolutely in love with it. A few months ago, a car came at me head on at highway speeds. I had to drive into a ditch and he hit my back 1/4 panel at 50mph, spinning me 90 degrees in the ditch. My 2wd Pathy drove in the ditch like it was a road. I had a bruised knee and neck/back injuries, but thankfully I'm okay. Unfortunately, the other driver had no insurance, so my insurance had to foot the bill. It was $8000 in damage, mostly to the rear suspension, but she's good as new!

I drive mainly in the city, and I find that it has all the power I need. While it does use some gas, I think 15 miles per gallon is good for city driving. I've owned the Pathfinder for 4 weeks now and it has met all of my expectations.

It's great to hear that your wife had such a reliable and functional SUV that lasted for an impressive 220,000 miles with virtually no problems. It's clear that this vehicle was a true performer, especially in snow or serious off-road driving. Additionally, it's impressive that the vehicle was virtually rust-proof and remarkably durable in exterior finish. Thank you for recommending this vehicle, and we hope that your newly acquired 1998 Pathfinder is just as good!

I bought this car with 35,000 miles and I must say, it's the smoothest riding SUV I have ever been in. The ride comfort is second to none. At 60,000 miles, I had to have the brakes replaced, front & rear shocks replaced. At 68,000 miles, there was a funny noise in the front end, and I had to replace the sway-bar link. Now at 76,000 miles, I have to have the brakes replaced again. Overall, the car runs well and I would definitely recommend it to anyone else. However, it's worth noting that the brakes and struts/shocks need to be replaced more frequently than normal. Also, the engine has poor acceleration, but it's reliable.

I recently purchased a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Plat with Premium options. Although the vehicle had only 9 miles on it, I encountered some issues after driving it 50 miles to my home. The next morning, I received an i-Key system error and the check engine light came on, with the OBD code showing P0850. I contacted the dealer and was informed that a shifter assembly part needed to be replaced, rather than a fob programming. Although this was an inconvenience, the dealer was able to fix the issue promptly. However, a few days later, my wife noticed that the passenger airbag was off while sitting in the passenger seat. I returned to the dealer and was informed that the seat was not calibrated. Although this was frustrating, the dealer was able to fix the issue again. I am hopeful that these issues will not arise again in the future.

I am sorry to hear about the issues you have experienced with your vehicle. It must be frustrating to have encountered so many problems in such a short amount of time. Have you considered reaching out to Nissan's customer service team to see if they can assist you with these issues? I hope that you are able to find a solution that works for you and your family.

Although my car has had some issues, I have taken care of them promptly and effectively. I have replaced the alternator twice, fixed a severe oil leak, replaced the AC compressor, and changed the oxygen sensors, among other things. Despite these challenges, I have invested a lot of money into this vehicle and it has served me well. I am confident in my ability to maintain and improve its performance in the future.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Pathfinder that I purchased on 7/26/15. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing a shudder when accelerating at low speeds since 8/3/15. I've heard that this is a common issue with the CVT, which is a shame. I was disappointed to learn that Nissan doesn't offer loaners or rental reimbursement unless you pay an extra $2000, which seems a bit unreasonable. As someone who has owned a 95 Altima, 02 Maxima, and 09 Altima hybrid, I was hoping for a better experience with this Pathfinder. However, I'm still hopeful that Nissan will address this issue in the future. Thank you for listening to my story.

We absolutely love everything about the car's style and look! We've been eagerly waiting for the platinum to show up, as it has all the extras my wife likes and can still pull the boat. During our test drives, we noticed some issues with the steering and shaking on certain sections of the interstate, which was concerning. We made Nissan aware of the issue, and they even tried different tires, but unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem. We're hoping for a fix or recall soon to prevent any potential injuries or accidents.
