Nissan Pathfinder problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.

The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.

In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

Common Nissan Pathfinder problems

The Nissan Pathfinder, a crossover/SUV produced since 1986, is known for its reliability. However, like any vehicle, it has faced certain issues over the years. This article, based on search results, outlines common problems with the Nissan Pathfinder, focusing on complaints from owners and available solutions.

  • Navigation system problems: The 2017 Pathfinder has been reported to have issues with the navigation display, including freezing controls, a stuck backup camera, and a malfunctioning reverse assist display.
  • Transmission issues: The 2005-2010 model years, in particular, have faced transmission problems. The automatic transmissions may fail around 90,000 miles due to a crack in the oil cooler tube, causing coolant to leak into the transmission system.
  • Climate system failure: A/C and heating system issues have been reported by many 2015 Pathfinder owners. The climate system may refuse to work, causing significant problems during extreme temperatures.
  • CVT issues: Nissan's CVT issues have been widespread, affecting the Pathfinder's transmission system. The CVT system has been reported to be slow to respond, overheat easily, and shutter while accelerating. This can be a safety risk during highway merges and may cause constant stuttering.
  • Timing chain issues: Pathfinder owners have reported issues with the timing chain guides, shoes, and tensioners. A loose timing chain can cause rattling or acceleration issues, and even lead to engine failure.
  • Engine stalled and doesn't restart: This issue is caused by contaminated contacts in the engine control module (ECM) and the ignition relay in the IPDM. The ECM and the ignition relay will need to be replaced, which is a fiddly DIY job, but can be done with the right parts and online guides.
  • Driver's power seat harness fault: The driver's power seat harness can become trapped between the seat lifter mechanism and the metal seat bracket. If left unattended, this can cause damage to the harness and potentially lead to accidents. Separating the harness from where it's trapped or replacing it with a new one can resolve the issue.
  • Whining power steering: This issue, which Nissan is largely ignoring, can be resolved by fitting a new insulator on the power steering module. Some drivers have managed to fix the problem this way.
  • Gearbox shuddering: This issue, which is a computer programming problem, can be resolved by having the computer checked and software updated at a Nissan dealer.
  • Fuel and temp gauges problems: This issue is caused by a failure with the voltage regulator behind the dashboard. Replacing the voltage regulator will sort the problem out.
  • Timing chain wear: Later models of the Pathfinder are prone to premature timing chain wear, usually around the 102,000-mile point. Replacing a worn timing chain is a big job, but it's more wallet-friendly to order a new belt and fit it yourself than hand the car over to a mechanic.
  • Brake pedal issues: Some Pathfinders have a defect that causes the clevis pin to come loose from the brake pedal and brake booster input rod assembly. This can be resolved by reattaching the clevis pin and securing it into place with a new clip.

In conclusion, while the Nissan Pathfinder is generally a reliable vehicle, certain model years and issues have been reported by owners. Regular maintenance and addressing these issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the Pathfinder.

I was very lucky that nothing happened, but I'm very concerned about driving this vehicle and the potential danger it poses to myself and others if this happens again. I believe this is a serious issue and should be looked into with urgency. I've attached pictures of where the pedal snapped off. It appears to be a cheaply made piece of plastic that completely broke off. There is another picture with the pedal intact and circled in red, you can see an indentation towards the top of the pedal. This is where I believe the pedal broke off from.

I recently purchased a 2018 Pathfinder to replace my 2005 Infinity QX56, downsizing a little. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the vehicle. At 500 miles, I had to replace one tire due to it being out of round and causing major vibrations. Despite several attempts to balance the tires, the vibrations persisted and I had to have all of them replaced by the manufacturer at 6000 miles. However, the issue still persists. When I took the car to the dealership, the service advisor informed me that the vibration is a known characteristic of the vehicle. I was also told by a Nissan Rep that Michelin tires could potentially solve the issue. Despite contacting Nissan corporate, I was informed that there is nothing they can do. I test drove two other 2018 Pathfinders and found that they had the same issue. Unfortunately, the vibration is quite bad and I would not recommend this vehicle.

Manufacturer radiator & Transmission Defect…. And they are very aware of the issue but will not make it apart of their recall. They’ve extended the warranty coverage to 80K miles. But the issue doesn’t start until 80,100 Miles! I own a 2007 Nissan Pathfinder. I was driving 40 MPH & attempting to accelerate but the vehicle wouldn’t respond. I took the vehicle in to the dealership for a diagnostic check($100 later) only to tell me that code P0717 is the issue. Which is a cross contamination of fluids from the radiator in to the transmission and both would need replacing. But since my vehicle was over the 80K (uninformed warranty), I would have to pay $6,600! I Won't Stop Until They Do Right!!!

I have owned this Nissan Pathfinder for 6 years and put 52k miles on it. We had to replace the tires at 25K, but the alignment was fine since we don't pull a trailer. Unfortunately, the transmission has been a mess. However, we have decided to trade this one in this week along with my 2014 Altima (which also had 3 transmission issues and other problems). While our experience with Nissan has been challenging, we hope to find a more reliable vehicle in the future.

I love my Pathfinder! I've had it for 7 months now. When we were looking for a new car, we realized we still needed the third row on occasion, so we traded in our Toyota Sienna. I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth the ride is - it's not at all what I expected. The only downside is the gas mileage, as I only get around 16-17 miles per gallon around town. However, on the positive side, I managed to get 22-23 miles per gallon when I took it up skiing!

The gas mileage of this vehicle is not up to the mark. However, my full-size truck has a much better mileage than the Pathfinder. I have faced some issues with the vehicle such as the seats wearing out, logos falling off the floor mats, and transmission fluid mixing with the radiator coolant. After researching online, I found out that this is a common problem and Nissan should take responsibility for it. It would be great if they could recall these vehicles for a radiator design flaw. There are some other minor issues with the SUV, but they are too numerous to list. I am currently considering my options for the 5-year-old vehicle.

I absolutely love my pf! I bought it with 110,000 miles and it has been a reliable companion ever since. The well-made leather heated seats and 31 inch tires are just a few of the features that make it stand out. I use my pf for hunting, fishing, and road trips, and it has never let me down. Even with 322,000 miles on the original engine and 5-speed transmission, it still runs like a dream with no oil usage. I get an impressive 20 miles per gallon on long highway drives and 16 miles per gallon while driving around the countryside. Truthfully, I would rather drive my pf than my 85 Toyota 4Runner.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Pathfinder LE, which I purchased back in July of 2007. At the time, I was considering a few other vehicles, but ultimately decided on the Pathfinder LE because of its refined body style and luxurious appointments. I have to say, I have not been disappointed! The only issue I've had is an intermittent check engine light, which I believe is due to the o2 sensor. I'm getting that checked out next week. But other than that, this SUV has been a dream. I've even been able to haul 4' x 8' sheets of plywood in it - try doing that in some other SUVs! Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone who values quality, comfort, and reliability!

Step 1 - Make sure to have your transmission cooling lines disconnected from the radiator. Fortunately, there is an external auxiliary transmission cooler that already does the job for you. The only issue you may face is hard shifting in extreme cold. If you feel the need, you can add another auxiliary cooler to the truck, but unless you're maxing the towing capacity every day, it won't be necessary. The stock cooler is already very large. Step 2 - By following these steps, you have essentially resolved the only problem you will ever encounter, aside from some minor maintenance tasks. Enjoy!

After 2 1/2 years of driving and about 35,000 of my own miles, I can honestly say that this has been a great purchase. It's super comfortable and great on gas mileage. I no longer need to pull a trailer, so that's no longer an issue. I haven't had any mechanical issues at all. I hope I'm not jinxing myself, but this has been the best, most trouble-free car that I've ever owned.

I bought this car new in 1995 and I still like it. It has been very reliable. I replaced the tires at 48K and the brakes for the first time at 60K. It's easy to drive and park since it's not too large.
