Nissan Pathfinder problems

The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.
The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.
In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

Common Nissan Pathfinder problems
The Nissan Pathfinder, a crossover/SUV produced since 1986, is known for its reliability. However, like any vehicle, it has faced certain issues over the years. This article, based on search results, outlines common problems with the Nissan Pathfinder, focusing on complaints from owners and available solutions.
- Navigation system problems: The 2017 Pathfinder has been reported to have issues with the navigation display, including freezing controls, a stuck backup camera, and a malfunctioning reverse assist display.
- Transmission issues: The 2005-2010 model years, in particular, have faced transmission problems. The automatic transmissions may fail around 90,000 miles due to a crack in the oil cooler tube, causing coolant to leak into the transmission system.
- Climate system failure: A/C and heating system issues have been reported by many 2015 Pathfinder owners. The climate system may refuse to work, causing significant problems during extreme temperatures.
- CVT issues: Nissan's CVT issues have been widespread, affecting the Pathfinder's transmission system. The CVT system has been reported to be slow to respond, overheat easily, and shutter while accelerating. This can be a safety risk during highway merges and may cause constant stuttering.
- Timing chain issues: Pathfinder owners have reported issues with the timing chain guides, shoes, and tensioners. A loose timing chain can cause rattling or acceleration issues, and even lead to engine failure.
- Engine stalled and doesn't restart: This issue is caused by contaminated contacts in the engine control module (ECM) and the ignition relay in the IPDM. The ECM and the ignition relay will need to be replaced, which is a fiddly DIY job, but can be done with the right parts and online guides.
- Driver's power seat harness fault: The driver's power seat harness can become trapped between the seat lifter mechanism and the metal seat bracket. If left unattended, this can cause damage to the harness and potentially lead to accidents. Separating the harness from where it's trapped or replacing it with a new one can resolve the issue.
- Whining power steering: This issue, which Nissan is largely ignoring, can be resolved by fitting a new insulator on the power steering module. Some drivers have managed to fix the problem this way.
- Gearbox shuddering: This issue, which is a computer programming problem, can be resolved by having the computer checked and software updated at a Nissan dealer.
- Fuel and temp gauges problems: This issue is caused by a failure with the voltage regulator behind the dashboard. Replacing the voltage regulator will sort the problem out.
- Timing chain wear: Later models of the Pathfinder are prone to premature timing chain wear, usually around the 102,000-mile point. Replacing a worn timing chain is a big job, but it's more wallet-friendly to order a new belt and fit it yourself than hand the car over to a mechanic.
- Brake pedal issues: Some Pathfinders have a defect that causes the clevis pin to come loose from the brake pedal and brake booster input rod assembly. This can be resolved by reattaching the clevis pin and securing it into place with a new clip.
In conclusion, while the Nissan Pathfinder is generally a reliable vehicle, certain model years and issues have been reported by owners. Regular maintenance and addressing these issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the Pathfinder.

I believe this is a serious issue and should be looked into with urgency. I've attached pictures of where the pedal snapped off. It appears to be a cheaply made piece of plastic that completely broke off. There is another picture with the pedal intact and circled in red, you can see an indentation towards the top of the pedal. This is where I believe the pedal broke off from.

Vehicle year: 2003
I bought this car from a colleague in 2006 with only 17,000 miles on it. It now has 58,000 miles and, so far, it's been good. I've had a few issues, such as the CD skipping when it's cold, the leather around the seat adjusters cracking a bit, a heat shield rattle, and an evap leak - which has caused the check engine light to be on for about 4 years now. If you're experiencing the same issue, I would suggest trying a new gas cap as a potential fix. Additionally, I recommend using Maguire's leather treatment - it works great and eliminates any unwanted smells. I had a new oil pan installed in December 2011 for about $1,000. Overall, the cost of ownership has been as expected, considering that we live in Vermont and the winters can be brutal on vehicles.

Vehicle year: 1994
This vehicle has proven to be extremely reliable over the years. Despite its age, the paint still looks great. I was fortunate enough to purchase it from my uncle in 1997 with only 75K miles on it, and it now has an impressive 240K miles. I use it to tow my motorcycles to race tracks a few times a year, even in the heat of California, and it still runs like a dream. With an MPG of about 16city/19hwy, it's not bad for an older vehicle, especially when using Mobil 1 Synthetic EP 5W30. I recently finished installing its 3rd timing belt, water pump, tensioner, valve cover seals, etc. While replacing the valve cover seals, I did notice that the valve lifts were a bit dirty/sluggish, but a good engine cleaner should do the trick. I plan to keep this vehicle until it gives up on me, even though it's only worth about $2500.

Vehicle year: 1997
I really enjoyed reading your story about your family's 1997 Pathfinder LE! It's amazing how long it lasted and how much it was loved. The smooth transmission, quiet engine, and spacious interior sound like great features. It's wonderful that you're getting another 1997 SE soon. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with this underrated SUV. It sounds like a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable and durable vehicle. All the best!

Vehicle year: 1999
I bought this vehicle back in July of 1999 and it has been the most reliable automobile I have ever owned. After breaking it in, I switched to Mobil 1 motor oil and got two more MPG. It has been an outstanding and dependable SUV. I have never had to take it to the dealership for any warranty or recalls. That's how much you can count on this car every day. Just turn the key and no matter the weather (4X4), you're on your way. Now, after six years, these SUVs are perfect for college students. They offer plenty of room, not bad MPG 18-20, and a strong truck frame and body to protect your young drivers. What would you like to see your student driving? A small Civic or a REAL SOLID TRUCK? Sometimes bigger is better.

Vehicle year: 2018
I've had the 2017 Pathfinder for a few weeks now and I am really enjoying it. I have the Platinum package with the entertainment system in the rear seats. Overall, I am very pleased with the quality, especially the interior, which is comparable to a luxury vehicle. I checked out most competitors, including Mazda and Toyota. The Pathfinder had the most features I wanted, such as cooled seats, panoramic roof, and DVD system for rear seats - something my daughter loves. She enjoys looking out the roof and watching the monitors. The ride is nice and firm, just how I like it. The transmission is smooth and the engine is strong. What sold me on the Pathfinder is the amount of features it includes, such as safety features, and the fact that Nissan is always willing to make a deal to sell a car. Toyota wanted to knock off $2500 off the sticker on a 2016, while Nissan knocked off about $7k on a 2017, which was just unloaded and still wrapped in plastic. For $41k or thereabouts, the Pathfinder wins hands down.

Vehicle year: 2007
I purchased this vehicle from Tennessee and it was in great condition with no rust. However, after a year, I encountered an issue where the coolant in the radiator was mixing with the transmission. Unfortunately, the only solution was to replace the entire transmission, which cost me over $6k. I reached out to the Nissan dealership and was informed that this is a manufacturer defect that many others have experienced, but they can only assist if the vehicle has less than 100k miles. My vehicle has 140k miles, so I was disappointed. I have visited multiple auto shops, including the Nissan dealership, to fix this issue. It seems that the designers did not anticipate the damage that would be caused once the coolant mixed with the transmission, leading to computer damage. I had to spend $2k to reset the computer programming at the Nissan dealership, and an additional $4k to purchase a rebuilt transmission. I would honestly discourage anyone from buying this vehicle, as it requires frequent visits to the auto shop. This is an honest review, and I hope Nissan addresses this issue soon.

Vehicle year: 2008
Drives great initially, but after about 4k miles, you'll notice a very pronounced vibration in the steering at highway speeds. Sometimes it's so severe you can barely control the car. Lots of others have this problem if you search Google, and there's no resolution at the dealership. Just plain bad engineering on this one. Wish I had known before buying.
Charley Kuhic 2025-06-21
Vehicle year: 2005
My 2005 car has just gone dead with only 50K miles on it, and the dealer has informed me that the transmission needs to be replaced out of warranty at a cost of $5K. However, I am confident that Nissan will take responsibility for this issue and replace the transmission at their cost. I have always trusted Nissan's commitment to quality and customer satisfaction, and I am sure they will not disappoint me this time. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Nick Armstrong 2025-06-20
Vehicle year: 2005
Avoid purchasing this car. I purchased mine from a Nissan dealership a year ago and have experienced the same issue that many others have faced: the radiator coolant leaks into the transmission. This has resulted in the need to replace both the radiator and transmission, which costs thousands of dollars. Although Nissan has extended the warranty up to 80,000 miles, this problem typically occurs around 85,000 miles, as it did with my car. Unfortunately, it took several rounds of ineffective repairs, costing me around $1000, before the issue was identified. Based on my experience, I will not be purchasing any Nissan products in the future.
Clinton Kertzmann 2025-06-19
Vehicle year: 2006
I bought my Pathfinder brand new. Unfortunately, after 245,XXX miles, the transmission radiator problem took her down. Despite having to replace the catalytic converters twice, the fuel pump, both O2 sensors, Oil Pressure sensor, Camshaft position sensor, and the u-joint, I got 180,000 miles out of her before all of these problems. She's never left me stranded along the road, which is a testament to her reliability. However, this is my 4th and final Nissan. So, if you see a used one on the lot with around 150k miles on it, it might be best to move on and save yourself some dough.
