Nissan Pathfinder problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.

The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.

In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

Common Nissan Pathfinder problems

The Nissan Pathfinder, a crossover/SUV produced since 1986, is known for its reliability. However, like any vehicle, it has faced certain issues over the years. This article, based on search results, outlines common problems with the Nissan Pathfinder, focusing on complaints from owners and available solutions.

  • Navigation system problems: The 2017 Pathfinder has been reported to have issues with the navigation display, including freezing controls, a stuck backup camera, and a malfunctioning reverse assist display.
  • Transmission issues: The 2005-2010 model years, in particular, have faced transmission problems. The automatic transmissions may fail around 90,000 miles due to a crack in the oil cooler tube, causing coolant to leak into the transmission system.
  • Climate system failure: A/C and heating system issues have been reported by many 2015 Pathfinder owners. The climate system may refuse to work, causing significant problems during extreme temperatures.
  • CVT issues: Nissan's CVT issues have been widespread, affecting the Pathfinder's transmission system. The CVT system has been reported to be slow to respond, overheat easily, and shutter while accelerating. This can be a safety risk during highway merges and may cause constant stuttering.
  • Timing chain issues: Pathfinder owners have reported issues with the timing chain guides, shoes, and tensioners. A loose timing chain can cause rattling or acceleration issues, and even lead to engine failure.
  • Engine stalled and doesn't restart: This issue is caused by contaminated contacts in the engine control module (ECM) and the ignition relay in the IPDM. The ECM and the ignition relay will need to be replaced, which is a fiddly DIY job, but can be done with the right parts and online guides.
  • Driver's power seat harness fault: The driver's power seat harness can become trapped between the seat lifter mechanism and the metal seat bracket. If left unattended, this can cause damage to the harness and potentially lead to accidents. Separating the harness from where it's trapped or replacing it with a new one can resolve the issue.
  • Whining power steering: This issue, which Nissan is largely ignoring, can be resolved by fitting a new insulator on the power steering module. Some drivers have managed to fix the problem this way.
  • Gearbox shuddering: This issue, which is a computer programming problem, can be resolved by having the computer checked and software updated at a Nissan dealer.
  • Fuel and temp gauges problems: This issue is caused by a failure with the voltage regulator behind the dashboard. Replacing the voltage regulator will sort the problem out.
  • Timing chain wear: Later models of the Pathfinder are prone to premature timing chain wear, usually around the 102,000-mile point. Replacing a worn timing chain is a big job, but it's more wallet-friendly to order a new belt and fit it yourself than hand the car over to a mechanic.
  • Brake pedal issues: Some Pathfinders have a defect that causes the clevis pin to come loose from the brake pedal and brake booster input rod assembly. This can be resolved by reattaching the clevis pin and securing it into place with a new clip.

In conclusion, while the Nissan Pathfinder is generally a reliable vehicle, certain model years and issues have been reported by owners. Regular maintenance and addressing these issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the Pathfinder.

I was very lucky that nothing happened, but I'm very concerned about driving this vehicle and the potential danger it poses to myself and others if this happens again. I believe this is a serious issue and should be looked into with urgency. I've attached pictures of where the pedal snapped off. It appears to be a cheaply made piece of plastic that completely broke off. There is another picture with the pedal intact and circled in red, you can see an indentation towards the top of the pedal. This is where I believe the pedal broke off from.

The Pathfinder is a reliable vehicle that performs well both on snow and off-road. Although the frame is made of poor quality material, it can be rebuilt to pass inspection. I purchased it for 4600k with 56k miles about 4 years ago and have spent 6k rebuilding every part of the frame to ensure it passes inspection. If you are handy with welding, it can be a great off-road and snow vehicle. However, if you are not, expect to pay for some type of frame rebuild. Keep in mind that it is not a quiet or pretty ride, but it is all about utility.

Since 2000, my family and I have purchased a total of 5 Nissans, both new and used. My mother, who is now 74 years old, has owned 3 Xterras, while I have owned 2 Pathfinders. While we have had some issues with our 2006 Pathfinder, including a faulty front impeller shaft joint at 40K, a replaced steering column at 46K, a loose running board, and temperamental fog lights at 60K, we have still enjoyed our Nissan vehicles. Unfortunately, at 87K, the radiator failed and mixed the coolant and transmission fluid. Despite Nissan only offering a discounted repair price of $4000, I was able to find a replacement radiator on eBay for $100 and had Jiffy Lube flush the transmission. Ultimately, I decided to trade in the Pathfinder for a Silverado 4x4 crew cab due to some slipping in the transmission. While there may not be many Pathfinders of this series around, we still appreciate the quality of Nissan vehicles, especially compared to older Pathfinders that are still easy to find.

I purchased a 2014 Pathfinder SL in November 2013. As a long-time Nissan owner, I have always trusted the brand for its high quality and reliability. However, I am disappointed that Nissan has produced a vehicle with so many complaints about the CVT Transmission. As a customer, I feel let down and betrayed. Unfortunately, I have experienced acceleration problems, shakiness, and poor power range, which has resulted in multiple visits to the shop within a short period of time. I am not alone in my experience, as I have read similar complaints from other Nissan owners. I hope Nissan takes these concerns seriously and addresses them promptly to ensure the safety of its customers. Despite my current frustrations, I remain hopeful that Nissan will take the necessary steps to regain my trust and loyalty.

I recently traded my 2015 Rogue for a 2015 Pathfinder as I needed more space and towing capabilities. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with the vehicle. Specifically, I have noticed a shudder or judder at low speeds while accelerating at 25 mph, as well as a severe shudder when decelerating down hills or on inclines while off the accelerator or braking. Despite having the computer reprogrammed, the issue persists. I am currently waiting for the dealership to receive more information from the NISSAN Regional tech to determine the next steps to correct the issue. While I am disappointed with the situation, I am hopeful that a solution can be found. I have heard of this issue with the CVT, but had no problems with my Rogue, so I assumed it had been resolved as NISSAN had claimed. I am still a fan of NISSAN and hope to continue driving their vehicles in the future.

I am sorry to hear about the issues you have experienced with your vehicle. It seems that the powertrain and electronic system design may not have been up to the expected standards. At 89K miles, you started experiencing shudder when the automatic transmission moved between 1st and 2nd gear, which worsened rapidly until the transmission became inoperable above 10 mph. Upon investigation, it appears that this is a well-known issue with the Pathfinder where the radiator fluid fails into the transmission, causing both the radiator and transmission to fail. I understand that this has resulted in a significant repair bill of $6000. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist you further.

I bought my Pathfinder brand new in 2006 and it has been my trusty companion ever since. With two kids and a demanding job, I spend a lot of time on the road, but my SUV has never let me down. It has taken me on countless adventures and I have always been able to rely on it. Of course, I make sure to keep up with regular maintenance, including changing the oil and replacing the tires and brakes when needed. Overall, it has been a fantastic vehicle that has served me well. The only downside is the requirement for 93 octane fuel, which can be expensive in today's market. However, I have found that using 87 octane fuel negatively affects the performance, so I stick with the higher grade. Out of the nine vehicles I have owned in my life, this is the only one that has never given me any trouble. I highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a reliable SUV.

We test drove a Chevy Tahoe, a Toyota 4Runner, a Toyota Highlander, and a Nissan Pathfinder. The Pathfinder was our favorite due to its stylish design, comfortable interior, and spaciousness. Although we did notice some slight wandering at speeds above 60 mph, we did not experience any issues with the transmission, which is a common complaint among other owners.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1994 Nissan Pathfinder. It was actually passed down to me from my brother a few years ago and I've been loving it ever since! With almost 200,000 miles on it, I've only had to do regular maintenance and fix a cracked exhaust manifold (which only cost me $400). This truck is amazing off-road, great for city driving, and even works well on the highway. I use it for work, commuting, and even off-road driving in the mountains when I go biking. It's been such a reliable and versatile vehicle for me!

This is one of the best trucks out there! It's extremely durable and looks great too. Plus, with only 19000 actual mileage, it will last forever!

As a fellow car enthusiast who races sports cars and karts on the weekends, I completely understand the importance of finding the right car. Despite some negative reviews, I wanted to share my positive experience with our 2015 model. We've put 7000 miles on it in the past 6 months and couldn't be happier with our choice. I believe any issues with the CVT have been resolved in the first 2 model years. In fact, just a few weeks after purchasing it, we took it on a 2000 mile road trip with our two small kids and it performed flawlessly. I would jump at the chance to take it on another long road trip. With the cruise set to 78mph, I was able to achieve 26 mpg in 2wd mode, making it the best highway road trip vehicle we've ever had. Our previous car, a 2011 Forester, never quite lived up to Subaru's slogan of being
