2003 Nissan Pathfinder problems
The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.
The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.
In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

Common 2003 Nissan Pathfinder problems
Based on the sources provided, here are some common problems with the Nissan Pathfinder 2003 based on complaints from owners:
- Hydraulic Tailgate Strut Bracket: Some Pathfinders were affected by a fault with the bracket that attaches the hydraulic tailgate struts to the tailgate, leading to a recall for replacement.
- Fuel Filler Pipe Corrosion: In certain states with heavy road salt concentrations, insufficient anti-corrosion coating on the fuel filler pipe caused a recall for replacement.
- Corrosion in Upper Strut Housing: Corrosion issues in the upper strut housing due to a fault could lead to recalls in specific states with heavy road salt use during winter.
- Handbrake Cable Problems: The left-rear bracket for the parking brake cable can work loose, causing wear to the cable casing, leading to a squeaking noise over rough roads. The solution involves replacing the cable and bracket with upgraded parts.
- Accessory Drivebelt Issues: Owners might notice noise from the accessory drivebelt area, which could be due to the belt itself, pulleys, or the tensioner. The solution involves identifying the faulty component and following the replacement procedure outlined in the Haynes Pathfinder manual.
These problems highlight various issues that Nissan Pathfinder 2003 owners have faced, ranging from starting difficulties to corrosion-related recalls and maintenance issues with components like the handbrake cable and accessory drivebelt.

2003 Nissan Pathfinder recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2004 Pathfinder, 2007-2011 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback, 2001-2004 Infiniti I30 and I35, 2002-2003 Inifiniti QX4, 2003-2008 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 and 2006-2010 M35 and M45 vehicles. The vehicles are equipped with non-desiccated, frontal passenger air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflators with alternate desiccated inflators, free of charge. The recall began February 12, 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 888-737-9511 or Infiniti customer service at 888-810-3715.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2001-2003 Nissan Maxima, 2002-2004 Pathfinder, 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2003 Infiniti QX4 and I35, 2003 FX35 and FX45, and 2001 I30 vehicles. Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on June 15, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: On December 18, 2015 Nissan informed NHTSA of an amendment of this recall to remove 2004-2005 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 vehicles.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: STEERING:COLUMN
- Summary: NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1996-2004 PATHFINDER AND MODEL YEAR 1997-2003 INFINITI QX4 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD, OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON D.C., WEST VIRGINIA AND WISCONSIN. IN AREAS OF THE COUNTRY IN WHICH HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT ARE USED, A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAY ENTER AN ASSEMBLY LOCATION HOLE IN THE UPPER STRUT HOUSING, CAUSING WATER TO COLLECT AT THE MATING SURFACE OF THE STRUT HOUSING PANEL AND THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. OVER TIME, THIS SNOW/WATER AND SALT INTRUSION MAY RESULT IN CORROSION OF THE STRUT TOWER HOUSING IN SOME SUBJECT VEHICLES.
- Consequence: THE STRUT HOUSING MAY CRACK AND PULL AWAY FROM THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. THIS MAY LEAD TO GRINDING NOISES, INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, AND POSSIBLY THE STEERING COLUMN TO BREAK, RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: NISSAN WILL INSPECT THE STRUT HOUSING AND REPAIR THE VEHICLES AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. AN INTERIM NOTIFICATION LETTER WAS SENT OUT IN MAY 2011. THE SECOND NOTICE WAS MAILED ON JULY 25, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

You've got yourself an excellent SUV that beats the competition hands down!
-
The car is good, but it lacks some leg room in the back. It might not be comfortable to fit three people in the back. Additionally, the back seats are not easy to fold, which can limit the cargo space. The seatbelt buckles often get stuck under the seat, making them hard to take out. However, the car rides very nicely and has a lot of power.

I'm from Montreal, Canada and I just got a fully equipped 2003 Pathfinder LE in silver. I absolutely love it! It was a bit pricey at $45,000 plus taxes (in Canadian dollars), but it was definitely worth it. If you're considering getting one, trust me, you won't regret it!
-
This has been the best vehicle I've ever owned! It's fast, sturdy, and air-tight. I haven't heard one squeak! Since my family is growing, I'm excited to look into a full-size SUV from Nissan (rumored anyway).
-
Fun to drive and practical at the same time! It's the best bang for your buck. If you're looking for a status symbol, go for the X5. But if you're looking for something economical, practical, and still fun to drive, you'll love this one. I certainly do!

My toddler was bleeding from the head, so we rushed to the emergency room in my bronze Nissan Pathfinder. On the way, we passed a silver Infiniti QX4 and my son pointed out of the window, saying 'Daddy's car.' It's amazing how even a concussed two-year-old can see through the exterior shiny trim of a QX4 that hides the Pathfinder beneath. Why spend an extra $5,000 on an Infiniti when you can buy a Pathfinder and save yourself some money? By the way, my son is fine now...
Eduardo Reichert 2024-10-14
I currently own a 2003 Nissan Pathfinder SE. It's a great truck with RWD/4WD and I have no complaints about its performance. It's also quite comfortable. I haven't had any issues with storage and it has some pretty good features for an 03 model. However, I have had some maintenance issues with it over the past 4 years. The biggest problem has been with the 3-speed automatic transmission. Unfortunately, it stopped shifting past 2nd gear about a year after I got it. I had to buy a brand new transmission for $800, but it still barely shifts and won't go in reverse. I don't want to generalize and say that all Nissans are bad, but I've had some issues with the Pathfinder models.

Although I experienced a stalling/idling problem on the day I picked up the Pathfinder, I am confident that the issue has been resolved after the dealer made $1500 worth of torque converter warranty repairs. Despite the windshield stress crack that occurred at 6 months due to improper installation, I still enjoy driving this Pathfinder. However, as a confident driver, I am concerned about its long term reliability, especially since I have another 30 months on my lease. Rest assured, I will continue to monitor the vehicle's performance and address any issues that may arise with the same level of confidence and assertiveness.

The brakes were of poor quality and the stereo was broken from the start, which had to be replaced four times. Unfortunately, my experience with Poughkeepsie Nissan was not satisfactory. The front bumper was damaged and poorly repainted before delivery, and the dealer refused to take responsibility for it. I am currently seeking legal assistance to obtain a full refund. Nissan customer support has not been helpful in this matter. I would advise anyone interested in purchasing a Pathfinder to avoid this dealership.

It seems like the dealerships may not have all the information needed to assist you. Additionally, the radio/cd changer has failed twice and the brakes may need some attention. It's unfortunate that the dealership and manufacturer have been unwilling to address these issues. The exterior build quality could be improved as well, as the decals tend to peel off and the plastic can warp. Perhaps some changes could be made to the transmission as well. Overall, it seems like there are some areas that could use some improvement.
