2019 Nissan Pathfinder problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.

The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.

In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

Common 2019 Nissan Pathfinder problems

The Nissan Pathfinder has been a popular choice for SUV buyers since its inception in 1986. However, like any vehicle, it has its fair share of problems, especially in certain model years. Here are some of the most common problems with the Nissan Pathfinder, specifically the 2019 model, based on complaints from owners:

  • Faulty Fuel Level Sensor: The Pathfinder's fuel level sensor can fail, resulting in erratic or inaccurate gauge readings. This issue has affected over 16 different Pathfinder model years from 1994 to 2016, including the 2019 model. The usual fix is to replace the fuel pump, which may cost $673-$833.
  • Navigation System Problems: Some owners of the 2019 Pathfinder have reported issues with the navigation display, including the navigation controls freezing, the backup camera getting stuck, and the malfunctioning reverse assist display.
  • CVT Issues: Nissan's CVT issues are well-documented, and the Pathfinder is no exception. Nissan owners have claimed that the Pathfinder's CVT transmission system is slow to respond, overheats easily, and shutters while accelerating. This issue can be a significant safety risk when trying to merge on a busy highway. The CVT transmission is also prone to failure, especially in the 2005-2010 model years.
  • Timing Chain Issues: Pathfinder owners have reported issues with the timing chain, including loose timing chains that can cause rattling or acceleration issues, and even engine failure. These issues were reportedly affecting the guides, shoes, and chain tensioners.

It's important to note that these problems are based on complaints from owners and may not be representative of all 2019 Nissan Pathfinder vehicles. With proper maintenance, the Pathfinder can last a long time, as evidenced by its above-average reliability rating of 3.5 out of 5.0, according to RepairPal. However, it's always a good idea to be aware of potential issues and to address them promptly to avoid more significant problems down the road.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-25
  • VIN: 5N1DR2MMXKC
  • Components: ENGINE

The engine was knocking and would not accelerate on the highway past 40 mph. When I finally stopped the car, it would not restart. I read an article where this type of engine failure was consistent with the Rogue and Altimas that you were already investigating and I was wondering if the Pathfinder had a related investigation going on.

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-06-01
  • VIN: 5N1DR2MM2KC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: My rear camera display malfunctions and the screen goes black. I took it on to Nissan for repair and the problem is still not resolved. I contacted Nissan on several times and reported the issue to see if my vehicle is on recall list but it’s not. I believe it should be. I also have issues with my driver window. It gets stuck especially in the winters. I took my vehicle to Nissan to resolve the issue, and they said it’s glue to how the doors were made. I purchase the vehicle brand new. I feel Nissan rushed the car on me to get a sale and didn’t double check to see if the vehicle had any flaws. I would like to report a recall on my vehicle. When I looked online I noticed the rear view camera has been recalled and I wonder why my vehicle is not on the recall list. Nissan has a record of my vehicle being brought in to repair it.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-14
  • VIN: 5N1DR2MM7KC
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Cruise control does not always brake when coming close to object. ABS, traction control and collision warning lights will come on periodically causes cruse control to not operate at all. First time it happened was Dec of 2020, was told by dealer it was faulty sensor and was supposedly fixed yet warning lights continue to come on frequently and cruise control will not work until car if shut of and back on. Since 2020 I have reported is to Keating Nissan a few times but they say they lights have to be on when I bring it it. When car shut off lights go off and don’t always come back on right away. Car has tended to speed up on its own when cruise control is on when no need to speed up on flat straight road stretch. Last time light illuminated was Feb 1st, Jan 14 2023 although it has happened periodically since 2021 after first incident in 2020. Also warning sensor for coming close to objects in front of you when parking does not alert at all.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-27
  • VIN: 5N1DR2MN4KC
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: Nissan uses bi-metal lug nuts, as does a number of other manufacturers, including Jeep. For Nissan, these are a steel lug nut covered with a shiny metal, likely chrome. Over time, there apparently has been corrosion, either galvanic or because the thermal cycling the wheel experiences allow moisture to get between the two metals and rust occurs. The end result is the lug nut swells and the manufacturer provided lug wrench no longer fits, preventing the owner from changing a flat tire. While not a major saftety issue, it does increase the risk of an owner being injured as they attempt to force the lug wrench onto the lug nut. The owner is also at a slightly elevated risk as they repeatedly attempt to remove the tire on the side of the road, increasing the time exposed to traffic. Even roadside assistance likely does not have the specialty tool (21.5mm or 22.5mm socket) needed to remove the tire. These bimetal lug nuts should be banned.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-30
  • VIN: 5N1DR2MN8KC
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Monday, January 30, at 7:25pm, I was driving my 2019 Nissan Pathfinder at 55mph and the sunroof exploded. The weather was clear, 60 degrees, no precipitation. There was a loud explosion then the sound of glass rained over the roof of the car. The interior shield was closed; therefore, glass did not enter the vehicle. We pulled over immediately to inspect the vehicle. The sunroof was identified as shattered with the glass shards in an upward position. We did not have cars around us. We were on an open road, no where near an overpass. There was nothing that could have fallen or hit the sunroof. Because the glass rained over the car and the glass was positioned upward, it is clear the sunroof exploded.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-15
  • VIN: 5N1DR2MMXKC
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Is it noted anywhere that the 2019 Nissan Pathfinder SV 4x4 vehicle's brakes wear rather quickly, that whatever pin was missing is not secured properly and as well as the brake fluid dissapating? All of this is vital to proper safety. Although I like Pathfinders, I will not subject myself or my funds to an unsafe vehicle and the repairing brakes every 3 months. I was told and shown that my vehicle had new front and rear brakes when it was purchased. My rear brakes wore out in 3 months of owning the vehicle and the front ones are wearing in their 5th month. When I had the rear brakes repaired at Tire South, they explained that I was missing a vital pin, which is why it was making noise. There was also no brake fluid present. They said I had been very lucky while driving.

  • Summary: 2019 Nissan Pathfinder SV 4x4 was purchased April 30, 2022- I've noticed that the hood moves, vibrates, flutters almost aggrssively while drivng on local streets and the hwy. It's as if the hood was made of paper or flimsy material and wants to fly off it's hinges. At times I'm fixated on it, although my attention should be on the road and watching for other drivers. The hood makes me nervous as if an accident is inevitible. I haven't taken it to be checked as of yet, but something needs to be done about this if others are experiencing this exact issue.

2019 Nissan Pathfinder recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2019 Nissan Pathfinder.

2019-11-08
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Park Out Side: 1
  • Park Out Side: 1
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Nissan Murano, 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima, and 2017-2019 Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti QX60 vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and unrepaired, or inspected and determined to not need a repair, under recall number 18V-601. In addition, this recall expands the previous population. The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) actuator pumps may allow brake fluid to leak onto an internal circuit board.
  • Consequence: A brake fluid leak on the circuit board may result in an electrical short, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ABS actuator, free of charge. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available, currently expected to be during summer 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: If the ABS warning light remains illuminated for more than 10 seconds after engine start up, owners are advised to park the vehicle outdoors away from other vehicles or structures and to not drive the vehicle.

  • Consequence: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.

Negative 2019 Nissan Pathfinder car reviews

  1. Salvatore Kutch 2024-10-26

My mom has owned this car for 2 years and I can honestly say that despite some minor issues at the start, it has been a decent car overall. While there were some problems that arose over time, such as jerking when accelerating and issues with the gear lever, the ride itself is great and the car is powerful. I hope this information helps!

  2. Lawrence Jenkins 2024-10-11

I had an issue with the left head gasket of my 2019 Pathfinder with 35,367 kms, but fortunately, it was covered under warranty. Although the repair cost around $4000, I am confident in the quality of the vehicle. While the CVT transmission failed at 54,467 kms, I still believe in the overall performance of the car. I am a proud owner of a Toyota!

  3. Jamie Smith 2024-10-04

Hey there! While the Pathfinder may not be the flashiest option out there, it's still a great choice for those looking for a reliable vehicle.

  4. Curt Nader 2024-09-22

When I first got the Pathfinder SL with Premium Package, I thought it was going to be my next new vehicle. I drive a 16 Corolla S on a daily basis, my weekend car is a MKIII Supra, and my wife has a 15 Camry XSE V6. After spending a few weeks with it and driving nearly 5000 miles, my enthusiasm waned a bit. However, I still love the ride comfort, even with the 20 inch wheels. I was pleasantly surprised, as I previously owned a 13 Equinox V6 with 18's that was terrible. The ride is still one of the best. Unfortunately, the steering is not great during cornering, as the power steering pulses between too much assist and too little, making it feel like it is zig-zagging instead of gracefully cornering. I test drove other Pathfinders to see if it was just a problem with the rental, as I was serious about purchasing one, and they did it as well. Nissan could use thicker sway bars to make the SUV feel more secure when the road starts turning. The exterior mirrors are huge, but when combined with the thick A-pillar, there is a massive blind spot that can hide small cars. The blind spot monitors work very well, but the warnings are not in the mirrors where your eyes are looking, but 8 inches down close to the base of the door and A-pillar. One has to do a little bit of a two-step. The CVT in the Pathfinder, and Nissans in general, is just a bit better than the CVT in the Mitsubishi SUV's. Toyota has done a nice job with the Corolla's CVT, as did Honda with theirs. In a $40k+ vehicle, a CVT shouldn't even be considered, an 8-speed auto should be the minimum. The interior is nice and well appointed, it feels right. Nissan did a great job here. No rough edges, the leather is nice, it feels like it belongs in a vehicle with a little higher price tag. And it has a comfortable ride. The Bluetooth pairs well. That is the best of the infotainment. The navigation is easy to use, but it could be improved. If you want a full map, it won't tell you the next turn until you are up on it. However, if you half-screen the map, it will give turn information like exit number, street name and distance. With full screen, it does not tell you exit number of street name, only distance and direction, until you are within a 1/4 mile of the exit/turn. This can be challenging when there are several roads in close proximity. The hands-free voice activation for phones could use some improvement. My $20k Corolla S understands every command perfectly, but the Pathfinder cannot understand anything. On the bright side, the Bose sound system is nice and clear, and worth the expense. The controls for the climate and radio could be more intuitive, as I still have to take my eyes off the road to make any adjustment. However, the panoramic roof is a nice touch, with one small tilt/slide glass panel over the front seats, and a large, non-moving glass panel with sliding sunshade over the 2nd and 3rd rows. Fuel mileage is quite a surprise, as I am seeing about 24mpg combined, a little better than advertised. This can be attributed to the CVT, but an 8+ speed would be similar. As for the CVT, it may not be suitable for towing. Overall, though, it is a nice vehicle, and I could probably live with some of its shortcomings if I got a great deal on one. At $42k MSRP, however, getting another 3-row crossover with every option this has would cost several thousand more (Kia Sorento with rear seat heaters is nearly $45k MSRP). One could do worse than getting the Pathfinder, but there are better options available. And, even with the 20

  5. Mervin Pollich 2024-06-29

I was torn between the Explorer and the Pathfinder, but ultimately chose the Pathfinder due to its impressive fuel efficiency and spacious interior. Although both vehicles had ample power for towing, the Pathfinder's sporty look and longer range per tank sealed the deal for me. However, I was disappointed to find that the entertainment system is outdated and does not support Apple Play or Android Auto, despite being a top-of-the-line model. Even older and less expensive Nissan models have this feature, which is frustrating. Additionally, the Intuitive Cruise Control system has some quirks that take getting used to, such as a slight drop in speed when first setting the cruise control and a delay in acceleration when going up hills. Despite these issues, the car has a sleek design and handles well. While I have yet to achieve the advertised fuel efficiency on the highway, I plan to keep the Pathfinder for another year before considering a trade-in for the Explorer.

Positive 2019 Nissan Pathfinder car reviews

We recently upgraded our vehicle from a Nissan Rogue to a Pathfinder. Although we didn't enjoy our Rogue from the beginning, we were thrilled to find a great offer on a 2019 Pathfinder Platinum from our dealer. We were originally considering the Highlander, but it was too expensive and Toyota had few offers available. With the Pathfinder, we were able to get a 25% discount off the MSRP, making the lease about 50% of what an equally equipped Highlander or Pilot would cost. While there are a few things we don't love about the Pathfinder, such as the older navigation unit and the lack of lane departure alert and lane keeping assist, we are still very happy with our decision. The car may not be the quickest or the most stylish, but it has some great features that we love. For example, the rear entertainment system has made a huge difference in our family's driving experience, and the car is very comfortable and well-isolated, even with winter tires on. We test drove the Rock Creek edition and noticed a significant difference in ride between the two trims. Overall, we are very satisfied with our choice and plan to keep the Pathfinder for the entire lease term.

It would be great if the car had a turbo. However, it does not have the same zip when taking off as a V6.

This is an excellent vehicle with excellent gas mileage! However, it may be too large for me as I don't need a third seat.

I drove a rental car for work for a week and ended up getting the Platinum 4wd instead of the SV 4wd. I compared it to a stripped Tahoe because I prefer rear-wheel drive and dislike torque steer or cvt. Surprisingly, I have been driving it for 5 months now and have no regrets. I really enjoy the driving experience and all the features that come with the Platinum. It was definitely a great choice for me! 👍

I see that you own a 2018 Pathfinder, and previously owned a 2016 model. It's great to hear that you are so happy with your vehicle! The Pathfinder is a powerful and comfortable SUV, with excellent safety features. I can understand why you love the surround view camera, it's so helpful when parking and pulling out of tight spots. The Bose stereo sound is also amazing, and the tow capacity is impressive. It sounds like you have thoroughly researched your options and found that the Pathfinder is the best fit for you. I agree that other leading SUVs don't offer the same level of comfort, towing power, or quiet ride. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!
