1999 Nissan Pathfinder problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.

The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.

In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

Common 1999 Nissan Pathfinder problems

The Nissan Pathfinder, a midsize SUV, has been a popular choice for many drivers since its inception in 1986. However, like any other vehicle, it has its fair share of problems, particularly in the 1999 model year. Based on the search results, here are some of the most common problems with the 1999 Nissan Pathfinder:

  • EVAP System Problems: The EVAP system problems can cause a check engine light, fumes smell after stopping and exiting the vehicle, and a gas cap that triggers the check engine light. The purge solenoid commonly breaks on the 1996-2004 Nissan Pathfinder, causing vacuum issues, and the EVAP canister at the rear of the vehicle can crack and leak.
  • Rear of the Vehicle Wobbles at Higher Speeds: The bushings in the lower and upper trailer arms wear out over time, causing the rear of the vehicle to wobble at higher speeds. You can replace the bushings or the entire trailer arm.
  • Transmission Problems: Transmission problems are a common issue with the 1999 Nissan Pathfinder. The most reported problem is coolant leaking into the transmission, which can cause transmission and radiator issues.
  • Water Pump Failure: The water pump can fail, causing the engine to overheat. This problem can cause a screeching noise coming from the engine and can be caused by a seized water pump. You can turn the water pump freely with your hand, and all the pulleys are moving still and move freely.

In conclusion, the 1999 Nissan Pathfinder has several common problems, including distributor problems, EVAP system problems, rear of the vehicle wobbles at higher speeds, transmission problems, and water pump failure. These problems can cause significant inconvenience and costly repairs, and it's essential to address them promptly to avoid further damage.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-09-09
  • VIN: JN8AR05Y1XW

  • Summary: I HAD THE PATHFINDER TESTED FOR THE RUSTED STRUT MOUNT AND CORROSION ISSUE IN 2011. NOW IT IS MORE THAN THREE YEARS SINCE I HAD THE RECALL PERFORMED BUT I HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING IF THE PATHFINDER THREE AND A HALF YEARS LATER IS NOW SAFE TO DRIVE. WHAT IS THE NHTSA POLICY ON RUST-RELATED ISSUES WHEN AN OWNER WOULD LIKE TO KEEP THEIR VEHICLE BUT WITH INCREASED DRIVING TIME ON SALTY ROADS, THEY NO LONGER HAVE ACCESS TO THE RECALL THAT WAS DESIGNED TO ENSURE SAFETY? I AM AT THE POINT WHERE I HAVE TO MAKE A SUBSTANTIAL INVESTMENT IN MAJOR MAINTANENCE ON THE VEHICLE YET I DO NOT KNOW IF THE VEHICLE WOULD PASS THE RECALL THAT IT WAS TESTED FOR SOME 40 MILES AGO AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY, THREE VERY HARD WINTERS ON SALTY STREETS. *TR

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-06-06
  • VIN: JN8AR07YXXW
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I TOOK MY CAR TO THE MANSFIELD OHIO NISSAN MMG DEALERSHIP TO BE INSPECTED FOR A CORROSION RECALL. THE DEALERSHIP PROVIDED ME WITH A LOANER WHILE THE INSPECTIONS WERE CARRIED OUT. NISSAN DECIDED THAT THE CAR WAS NOT REPAIRABLE AND OFFERED TO BUY THE VEHICLE FOR $5,600. I HAD A FEW DAYS TO CONSIDER THE OFFER BUT WAS UNDER IMMENSE PRESSURE AND THREATS THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR STORAGE CHARGES FOR MY CAR ON THEIR LOT AND ALSO THE LOANER CAR IF I DID NOT ACCEPT THEIR OFFER. THE DEALERSHIP EVEN THREATENED RESORTING TO "OTHER MEASURES" WHICH I INTERPRETED AS "CALL THE POLICE" IF I DID NOT EITHER ACCEPT THE OFFER OR RETURN THE LOANER CAR. WE ARE A SINGLE INCOME FAMILY, PARTIALLY DISABLE SPOUSE WHO CAN'T WORK WITH 2 KIDS IN COLLEGE SO I CAN'T AFFORD A CAR PAYMENT OR TO TAKE A LOSS ON THE VEHICLE. I TOLD NISSAN THAT I COULD NOT AFFORD THEIR OFFER BECAUSE I HAD DECIDED ABOUT A YEAR AGO THAT I NEED TO GET ANOTHER 100K MILES OUT OF THIS CAR AND THEN PROCEEDED TO INVEST ABOUT $4,000 INTO MAJOR MAINTENANCE THAT WOULD EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE CAR. I WAS WILLING TO PROVE ALL OF IT WITH RECEIPTS. I WAS TOLD BY NISSANN THAT THEY WOULD NEVER PAY ME FOR THIS MAINTENANCE, NO MATTER WHAT. I ASKED FOR A COPY OF THE INSPECTION REPORT SO I COULD ASSESS THE RISK AND THAT WAS DENIED. I COULD NOT FINANCIALLY AFFORD THE OFFER AND COULD NOT LONGER TOLERATE THE STRESS OF WORRYING ABOUT NOT HAVING A CAR OR THE POLICE AFTER ME SO I RETURNED THE LOANER AND PICKED UP MY CAR AND HAVE PUT IT BACK INTO FULL SERVICE. WHEN LEAVING THE LOT I HEAR A NOISE IN THE FRONT AND FELT SOMETHING IN THE STEERING THAT I HAVE NEVER NOTICED BEFORE. I HAVE SINCE HEARD IT A FEW MORE TIMES. I ASKED NISSAN IF THIS COULD HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THE INSPECTION BUT THEY ARE NOT ANSWERING ME. WHY WOULD CORROSION MAKE A NOISE ? I'M SCARED TO DRIVE THE CAR, CAN'T AFFORD THE OFFER, CAN'T HANDLE ANY MORE THREATS. HELP ? *JS

2011-04-20
  • Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: STEERING:COLUMN
  • Summary: NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1996-2004 PATHFINDER AND MODEL YEAR 1997-2003 INFINITI QX4 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD, OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON D.C., WEST VIRGINIA AND WISCONSIN. IN AREAS OF THE COUNTRY IN WHICH HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT ARE USED, A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAY ENTER AN ASSEMBLY LOCATION HOLE IN THE UPPER STRUT HOUSING, CAUSING WATER TO COLLECT AT THE MATING SURFACE OF THE STRUT HOUSING PANEL AND THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. OVER TIME, THIS SNOW/WATER AND SALT INTRUSION MAY RESULT IN CORROSION OF THE STRUT TOWER HOUSING IN SOME SUBJECT VEHICLES.
  • Consequence: THE STRUT HOUSING MAY CRACK AND PULL AWAY FROM THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. THIS MAY LEAD TO GRINDING NOISES, INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, AND POSSIBLY THE STEERING COLUMN TO BREAK, RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
  • Remedy: NISSAN WILL INSPECT THE STRUT HOUSING AND REPAIR THE VEHICLES AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. AN INTERIM NOTIFICATION LETTER WAS SENT OUT IN MAY 2011. THE SECOND NOTICE WAS MAILED ON JULY 25, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

THESE HEADLAMPS FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, "LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT." THESE LAMPS DO NOT CONTAIN THE REQUIRED AMBER SIDE REFLECTORS.
  • Consequence: DECREASED LIGHTING VISIBILITY MAY RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: DOPE, INC. WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER A FULL REFUND FOR THE NONCOMPLIANT COMBINATION LAMPS. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 28, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DOPE, INC. AT 1-626-272-1798.

  • Remedy: SABERSPORT WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER A FULL REFUND FOR THE NONCOMPLIANT COMBINATION LAMPS. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 11, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SABERSPORT AT 1-909-598-7589.

  • Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, TENNESSEE, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA , WISCONSIN AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, DURING THE COATING PROCESS OF THE FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY, AN INSUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF COATING MAY HAVE BEEN APPLIED AT THE LOWER MOUNTING BRACKET. THIS COULD RESULT IN AN OPENING IN THE COATING WHICH CAN ALLOW WATER TO ENTER AND MAKE CONTACT WITH THE BARE METAL OF THE TUBE.
  • Consequence: THIS MAY RESULT IN SURFACE RUST BUT NOT PERFORATION OF THE TUBE. HOWEVER, IN THOSE AREAS OF THE COUNTRY WHICH USE HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT IN THE WINTER, IF A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAKES CONTACT WITH THE BARE METAL, CORROSION MAY OCCUR TO A DEGREE WHICH RESULTS IN PERFORATION OF THE TUBE. IN THIS CASE FUEL LEAKAGE MAY OCCUR WHEN FILLING THE TANK. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY WITH A NEW ONE WITH AN IMPROVED COATING PROCESS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 26, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.
2006-03-23
  • Manufacturer: PRO-A MOTORS, INC.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: CERTAIN PRO-A MOTORS CORNER LAMPS, TURN SIGNALS, AND HEADLIGHTS SOLD AS REPLACEMENT LAMPS FOR USE ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. SOME COMBINATION LAMPS THAT ARE NOT EQUIPPED WITH AMBER SIDE REFLECTORS FAIL TO CONFORM TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT.
  • Consequence: WITHOUT THE AMBER REFLECTORS, THE VEHICLE WILL BE POORLY ILLUMINATED, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
  • Remedy: PRO-A MOTORS WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER TO REPURCHASE THE LAMPS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 3, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PRO-A MOTORS AT 323-838-2988.

I bought this car used and have driven it for 5 years, putting 40000 miles on it. During this time, I have had to replace the struts, exhaust, and ignition switch. Currently, there is a check engine light on for sensors in the block, which may cost around $1G to fix. Despite these issues, I appreciate the high seating position and easily reachable instruments. I also had a minor issue with the gas cap door, but it was easily fixed. The mileage is acceptable at 18. I have noticed some rust on the exterior of the step bar outside the doors, but nowhere else. I will need to replace the timing belt soon since I have already driven 80000 miles. At high speeds, I hear a humming noise, but I am not sure if it is due to the tires.

I purchased this car used with 171k miles and it ran great for a month. Unfortunately, both CV joints broke and I had to replace the whole front. Additionally, the brake pads fell off and there was an exhaust leak. The radiator also blew up and I had to replace it. The heat stopped working and the 4x4 almost shredded the transmission. The head gasket blew 4 times. Needless to say, this vehicle was a headache and I only owned it for 8 months, barely putting 700 miles on it. However, it did perform well in the snow.

My 1999 Nissan Pathfinder with 62,000 miles has developed a rattling noise, and after taking it to the dealership, I have been informed that the transmission needs to be replaced. The cost of the replacement is approximately $3,000. Despite having read reviews about the quality and reliability of the vehicle prior to purchasing it, it appears that some of the information was inaccurate.

I am satisfied with my vehicle's overall performance. Although the fuel economy and horsepower are not ideal, it provides a comfortable and reliable driving experience. The only mechanical issue I have encountered is a check engine light indicating an oxygen sensor failure.

I bought my Nissan Pathfinder two years ago. It's almost 2005 now and I still haven't had many problems with it. The only major issue I've had is that the seat has just started ripping from normal wear. Overall, it's been a great truck. When I do get a new vehicle, I hope to purchase a Pathfinder again because they're awesome!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed reading your review. It sounds like you've had a great experience with your SUV! It's awesome to hear that it's been so reliable for you and that you've had no major repairs. I totally understand what you mean about wanting better gas mileage, but it's great that you're still happy with the overall performance. I agree with you about the body style too - it's clean and understated, which is really nice. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I really enjoy driving both in and out of town, and I must say that this is the most comfortable SUV I have ever been in! I own the 4-wheel drive Safari Edition, and it is probably the best ride I have ever had in a 4-wheel drive vehicle. It feels like a car! It is perfect for long trips, has just enough room for us, handles great in wet weather, and is just an overall GREAT vehicle! Although I wish it got better gas mileage, I think it has to do with the oversized off-road tires I have on it. But they just look so good, who would take them off? I would rather sacrifice the gas mileage than the look!
