2005 Nissan Pathfinder problems

The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.
The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.
In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I got this vehicle from my parents which they bought brand new . So no other owners . When I got it was acting up and took to repair . They said my radiator was bad and had leaked radiator fluid . They thought could replace radiator and flush the system . I started looking at issues online . I found so many people with the same problems . I also found that Nissan was aware of a faulty crack in radiator. Which is the exact problem I had . I already spent 1000 $ in repairs with radiator and flushing system . I Am now out that money and the transmission has been effected by this issue . Tried everything possible with flushing system . Unfortunately this crack was the problem that has now left me with a perfect car that needs a transmission. So disappointed that Nissan ignores all the issues that unfortunately happened after 100,000 miles . Especially when they claim to know the radiator crack is a faulty part . That crack destroyed a perfect vehicle . Nissan should be accountable of these issues especially when their faulty part not only needed a new radiator but leaked into transmission . I am still sitting with this car . Unsafe to drive and unsafe to sell .
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-09
- VIN: 5N1AR18W65C
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: While driving on US 95 in DC, MD and NJ, when the traffic became stop and go, my SUV could not get into 1st gear to go. The engine revved, the car shook and made noises. Several times I came close to being rear-ended. This problem also occurs when starting after a red light, when accelerating on a highway (usually 3rd or 4th gear), and when turning left on a green arrow. Not only has it caused many close calls with being rear-ended, but it has also incited road rage in people who are driving behind me. Now I'm told I need a new transmission and also a new coolant system which leaks due to a fault in the system known by Nissan, and pollutes the transmission. This is a terrible safety threat and Nissan should own up to it and pay for the repairs.

2005 Nissan Pathfinder recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2005 Nissan Pathfinder.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2006 ARMADA, TITAN, INFINITI QX56 AND MODEL YEAR 2005-2006 FRONTIER, PATHFINDER AND XTERRA VEHICLES. THE INTELLIGENT POWER DISTRIBUTION MODULE (IPDM) ASSEMBLY CONTAINS AN ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) RELAY THAT HAS A DIODE FOR ELECTRICAL CURRENT NOISE REDUCTION. THE ECM RELAY MAY ALLOW SILICON VAPOR TO FORM AND, OVER TIME, THE SILICON EVAPORATES FROM THE DIODE MOLDING WHICH CAUSES SILICON OXIDE TO DEVELOP ON THE ECM RELAY CONTACT DUE TO ARCING.
- Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE ENGINE STALLING INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ECM RELAY INSIDE THE IPDM ASSEMBLY. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 6, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM
- Summary: NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN FRONT AND REAR LOWER LINKS, P/NOS. 54501ZQ00A, 54500ZQ00A, 551A1ZQ00A, 551A0ZQ00A , 54501EA00A, 54500EA00A, 551A1EA500, 551A0EA500, 54501ZR00A, AND 54500ZR00A, SOLD BETWEEN NOVEMBER 25, 2009 AND MAY 14, 2010 AS REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR MODEL YEAR 2004 THROUGH 2010 TITAN, ARMADA, AND QX56, AND MODEL YEARS 2005 THROUGH 2010 FRONTIER, XTERRA, AND PATHFINDER VEHICLES. THE LOWER CONTROL LINK ASSEMBLY HAS TWO CYLINDRICAL COLLARS FORMING THE INBOARD ATTACHMENT POINTS TO THE CHASSIS. DUE TO AN IMPROPER WELDING PROCESS SOME COLLARS MAY CONTAIN WELDS THAT DO NOT MEET STRENGTH SPECIFICATIONS.
- Consequence: IF THE COLLAR WELD SEPARATES, THE VEHICLE HANDLING WILL DETERIORATE, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: NISSAN WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY AFFECTED LOWER LINK FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 12, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Summary: NISSAN IS RECALLING 242,720 MY 2005-2009 PATHFINDER, FRONTIER AND XTERRA VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. IN THOSE AREAS OF THE COUNTRY WHICH USE HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT IN THE WINTER, A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT CAN ENTER INTO THE FRONT CRASH ZONE SENSOR (CZS) HOUSING. IF THIS OCCURS, THE CZS MAY INTERNALLY RUST RESULTING IN A SIGNAL INTERRUPTION. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE RED AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE TO ALERT THE VEHICLE OPERATOR.
- Consequence: THIS ISSUE COULD RESULT IN THE NON-DEPLOYMENT OF THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER FRONT AIR BAGS IN A CRASH, INCREASING THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT CZS WITH A REDESIGNED SENSOR. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 26, 2009. OWNERS IN THE OTHER STATES WILL RECEIVE EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR THE SENSOR TO 10 YEARS. THESE OWNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE WARRANTY EXTENSION BY MAIL AND WILL RECEIVE A STICKER TO PLACE IN THEIR WARRANTY BOOKLET EXPLAINING THE EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.
- Manufacturer: HOPKINS MANUFACTURING CORP.
- Components: EQUIPMENT
- Summary: CERTAIN HOPKINS AFTERMARKET TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL CONNECTION HARNESSES SOLD FOR USE ON CERTAIN MODELS OF NISSAN VEHICLES WHICH ARE LISTED ABOVE. THE INTERNAL PART NUMBERS WITHIN HOPKINS ARE: 1010476025, 1040376025, 1110476025, 1170376025, 1290376025, 1010476035, 1040376035, 1110476035, 1170376035, AND 1290376035. A WIRE MAY HAVE BEEN PLACED IN AN INCORRECT POSITION IN THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR HOUSING. THIS RESULTS IN AN INCORRECT ROUTING OF WIRES BETWEEN THE TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER AND THE TOWING VEHICLE WIRING SYSTEM.
- Consequence: THIS HARNESS WOULD RESULT IN POWER FROM THE TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER GOING TO THE TOWING VEHICLE DASH LIGHT CIRCUIT RATHER THAN THE TRAILER BRAKES. THIS RESULT WOULD BE THE LACK OF TRAILER BRAKING WHEN THE TOWING VEHICLE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. IT WOULD ALSO RESULT IN THE TOWING VEHICLES DASH LIGHTS BEING ACTIVATED WHEN THE VEHICLE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE FAILURE OF THE APPLICATION OF THE TRAILER BRAKE COULD RESULT IN REDUCED ABILITY TO STOP AND CONTRIBUTE TO A POSSIBLE CRASH.
- Remedy: HOPKINS WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE ORIGINAL HARNESS WITH A REVISED HARNESS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN AUGUST 17, 2007. OWNERS CAN CONTACT HOPKINS AT 800-835-0129.

I love this truck! Although, I was a bit torn on the review due to an issue I had with the transmission cooling lines failing, causing coolant to get into the transmission. As a result, the car would 'rumble' when the torque converter engaged. However, after installing a new radiator and flushing the transmission thoroughly, the Pathfinder has been virtually bullet-proof for the past 30,000 miles. It has been our go-to road trip car and has survived many brutal MN winters. The truck is seriously powerful with lots of sound and fury. :) The only downside is that the MPG isn't great, averaging around 17-18 MPG. Overall, it's a great truck and I highly recommend it!

Hi there! I recently received a warranty extension from Nissan regarding the radiator in my Pathfinder. Apparently, there have been some issues with the radiator failing and leaking coolant, which can cause damage to the transmission. I reached out to a couple of Nissan dealerships in my area, but unfortunately, they informed me that there is no fix for the issue until the radiator actually fails. I was disappointed to hear this, but I still love my Pathfinder and hope that it continues to run smoothly. Thanks for listening!

This SUV is fantastic! I upgraded from my 1999.5 Pathfinder to the 2005 model and I couldn't be happier. The third row seat is perfect for carrying more passengers, and the SUV's design ensures maximum comfort on long drives. The DVD player is a great addition, especially since I've gotten my radio back. The handling is excellent, and the ride is quiet and smooth. I also appreciate that this vehicle is not a gas guzzler like my brother's Ford Expedition.

You have a powerful engine that can be a bit noisy, but the transmission is silky smooth. The driving experience is smooth and enjoyable, with no binding or scrubbing in tight corners. However, there are some rattles, squeaks, and vibrations that can be heard, especially from the rear quarter window. Additionally, there are some plastic parts that shake over rough roads. It's worth noting that despite these issues, I have owned 5 new Nissans in 14 years and have never had any trouble before.

This SUV was purchased to tow a closed 6' X 10' trailer with DJ gear and the ability to haul extra people. The engine is powerful enough. If you need to tow larger boats and trailers, you may want to consider a larger SUV. I have had no mechanical problems with this vehicle. It's important to keep in mind that all mid-size and larger SUVs require a lot of gas, especially when working hard. This six-cylinder is no exception. This is a great looking truck that stands out from the crowd of Trailblazers and Explorers. I didn't test drive Explorers (as I'm not a Ford fan), but the Trailblazer handled like a sponge compared to the Nissan and the Trailblazer seats felt like you were sitting on a soft mound - ready to roll off.

Despite experiencing some issues with my Pathfinder, I am confident in Nissan's ability to provide quality service and support. While my engine needed to be replaced, I was pleased to find that Nissan corporate was helpful and covered the repair at another dealer. As a loyal customer for years, I appreciate their commitment to ensuring my satisfaction. Although I have had some reliability issues with my Pathfinder, I still love the vehicle and have faith in Nissan's products.

I purchased this SUV in December of 2009 with 44K miles on it. It was a great looking vehicle and served me well for a while. I was fortunate enough to not have any issues until it reached about 100K miles. After that, it started experiencing the same problems that others have reported, such as fuel sensor unit, check engine light, tire sensors, valve jobs, and coolant sending issues. One day in June of 2015, while driving across town with only 122K miles on it, I felt a knock underneath the vehicle. Shortly afterward, it wouldn't engage in reverse and then stopped engaging in forward as well, before it completely broke down and left me stranded. I knew from reading forums that it was the transmission. It took 2 months, 2 trips to the repair shop, other repairs, and a new transmission, costing me $3200, before it was finally back on the road. Nissan refused to take responsibility and the dealership was unhelpful. I couldn't trust it anymore, like a girl who has cheated on you many times. Needless to say, I sold it on Craigslist as soon as it was out of the shop and bought a Toyota SUV. I won't be buying another Nissan again. It would have been a different story if Nissan had taken responsibility for the problem and addressed the issues. Based on what I've read on forums, I'm not the only one who feels this way.

We purchased our Pathfinder brand new in 2005 and have always had it serviced exclusively at the dealership. Despite our efforts to prevent any issues, we were disappointed to discover a defective part in the radiator that could potentially damage both the transmission and radiator. Unfortunately, we were not informed of this issue, and as a result, our Pathfinder is currently out of commission. We were never notified of the potential problem, despite some customers receiving letters. We were told that it was not a problem and that there was no recall. We are currently exploring our options to resolve this frustrating situation.

I am sorry to hear about the issues you have experienced with your vehicle. It seems that the powertrain and electronic system design may not have been up to the expected standards. At 89K miles, you started experiencing shudder when the automatic transmission moved between 1st and 2nd gear, which worsened rapidly until the transmission became inoperable above 10 mph. Upon investigation, it appears that this is a well-known issue with the Pathfinder where the radiator fluid fails into the transmission, causing both the radiator and transmission to fail. I understand that this has resulted in a significant repair bill of $6000. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist you further.

I bought the Pathfinder because of its reputation for reliability in previous years. However, I have experienced some issues with the transmission cooler in the radiator, which caused anti-freeze to enter my transmission fluid. Unfortunately, this happened after the warranty period (which was good up to 60K miles) had expired, so I had to replace both the radiator and transmission at 70,000 miles. Additionally, I found the interior plastic to be of low quality, as the rear cupholders broke easily and there were squeaks throughout the vehicle. Overall, I was disappointed with the engineering and build quality of this vehicle. As a result, I have decided to sell it and purchase an older American-made truck (from 2002-2004).
