1998 Nissan Pathfinder problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.

The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.

In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

Common 1998 Nissan Pathfinder problems

The Nissan Pathfinder, produced since 1986, is generally considered a reliable SUV. However, certain model years have experienced specific issues that buyers should be aware of. Here are the Nissan Pathfinder years to avoid and the common problems associated with them, based on complaints from owners.

Years to Avoid: 2005-2007

The 2005-2007 Nissan Pathfinders have a severe issue with coolant leaking into the transmission, a problem commonly referred to as the "Strawberry Milkshake." This issue is caused by a defective part within the coolant system, which results in coolant mixing with the transmission fluid. This mixture can cause transmission and radiator issues, affecting the overall performance and longevity of the vehicle.

Years to Avoid: 2013

The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder has shown numerous complaints of transmission problems, but unlike the previous generation, these transmission problems are not related to leaking radiator fluid. Instead, they manifest as jerking and shaking during acceleration, a non-engaging transmission, shifter stuck in Park, transmission slippage, and the transmission slipping out of Park. These issues are often attributed to the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) system, which can act up and require replacement or rebuild.

Common Nissan Pathfinder Problems

While the 1996-2004 Pathfinder models are not considered the worst years, they still have some common issues that owners have reported. Here are the top five most common problems for the 2nd generation Nissan Pathfinders:

  1. Distributor Problems: The distributor sends spark to the spark plugs via the spark plug wires. Internal parts in the distributor, such as the coil or cap and rotor, can wear out and cause problems with the distributor and starting the engine.
  2. EVAP System Problems: Check engine light for codes P1447 or P1441, smell of fumes after stopping and exiting the vehicle, and gas cap triggered the check engine light. The purge solenoid commonly breaks, causing the EVAP system vacuum to be interrupted.
  3. Rear Suspension Problems: The bushings in the lower and upper trailer arms wear out over time, causing the rear of the vehicle to wobble at higher speeds.
  4. Timing Belt Problems: The timing belt connects the crankshaft sprocket to the upper camshaft sprockets on the engine and helps synchronize the valves with the crank. It wears out over time and should be replaced every 100,000 miles or less, depending on the model year.
  5. VVT Solenoid Problems: Check engine light for codes P0011 or P0021, which can be caused by the valve clogging up due to low oil levels or infrequent oil changes.

These common problems, while not exclusive to specific model years, can affect the overall reliability and performance of the Nissan Pathfinder. Proper maintenance and timely repairs can help mitigate these issues and ensure a more enjoyable driving experience.

  • VIN: JN8AR05S7WW
  • Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: OUR 1998 PATHFINDER HAS WHAT IS DESCRIBED BY MANY PEOPLE AS A "DEATH WOBBLE." IT BEGAN AFTER WE BOUGHT IT IN 2003 AND HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES SINCE. IT HAPPENED AS RECENTLY AS 2017 AND I AM BEGINNING TO BE AFRAID TO RIDE IN IT. AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 40-70 MPH THE CAR BEGINS TO VIOLENTLY SHAKE FROM SIDE TO SIDE. IT GRADUALLY GETS WORSE. REDUCING YOUR SPEED DOES HELP. IT APPEARS TO BEGIN BECAUSE OF A SMALL, UNEVEN PLACE IN THE HIGHWAY ROAD, BUT THEN DOESN'T STOP SHAKING BACK AND FORTH, SIDE TO SIDE. IT HAS HAPPENED REPEATEDLY EVEN AFTER HAVING IT SUPPOSEDLY FIXED. EACH TIME WE HAVE TAKEN IT TO BE REPAIRED THE SERVICE PERSONNEL ARE FAMILIAR WITH THIS PROBLEM CALLLING IT A "DEATH WOBBLE" AND REPLACE THE STRUTS AND OTHER AFFECTED PARTS. IT'S VERY EXPENSIVE. WE'VE DONE THIS 2-3 TIMES BUT AFTER A COUPLE YEARS IT HAPPENS AGAIN. CAN YOU PLEASE HELP OWNERS OF THE NISSAN PATHFINDER WITH THIS DEFECT? IT'S EXTREMELY UNSAFE AND TERRIFIES BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGERS. PLEASE SEARCH ONLINE: 1998 NISSAN PATHFINDER DEATH WOBBLE AND YOU WILL READ HUNDREDS OF POSTS AND UTUBE VIDEOS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. PLEASE HELP US.

1998 Nissan Pathfinder recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 1998 Nissan Pathfinder.

2011-04-20
  • Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: STEERING:COLUMN
  • Summary: NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1996-2004 PATHFINDER AND MODEL YEAR 1997-2003 INFINITI QX4 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD, OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON D.C., WEST VIRGINIA AND WISCONSIN. IN AREAS OF THE COUNTRY IN WHICH HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT ARE USED, A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAY ENTER AN ASSEMBLY LOCATION HOLE IN THE UPPER STRUT HOUSING, CAUSING WATER TO COLLECT AT THE MATING SURFACE OF THE STRUT HOUSING PANEL AND THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. OVER TIME, THIS SNOW/WATER AND SALT INTRUSION MAY RESULT IN CORROSION OF THE STRUT TOWER HOUSING IN SOME SUBJECT VEHICLES.
  • Consequence: THE STRUT HOUSING MAY CRACK AND PULL AWAY FROM THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. THIS MAY LEAD TO GRINDING NOISES, INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, AND POSSIBLY THE STEERING COLUMN TO BREAK, RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
  • Remedy: NISSAN WILL INSPECT THE STRUT HOUSING AND REPAIR THE VEHICLES AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. AN INTERIM NOTIFICATION LETTER WAS SENT OUT IN MAY 2011. THE SECOND NOTICE WAS MAILED ON JULY 25, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.
2007-09-18
  • Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, TENNESSEE, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA , WISCONSIN AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, DURING THE COATING PROCESS OF THE FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY, AN INSUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF COATING MAY HAVE BEEN APPLIED AT THE LOWER MOUNTING BRACKET. THIS COULD RESULT IN AN OPENING IN THE COATING WHICH CAN ALLOW WATER TO ENTER AND MAKE CONTACT WITH THE BARE METAL OF THE TUBE.
  • Consequence: THIS MAY RESULT IN SURFACE RUST BUT NOT PERFORATION OF THE TUBE. HOWEVER, IN THOSE AREAS OF THE COUNTRY WHICH USE HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT IN THE WINTER, IF A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAKES CONTACT WITH THE BARE METAL, CORROSION MAY OCCUR TO A DEGREE WHICH RESULTS IN PERFORATION OF THE TUBE. IN THIS CASE FUEL LEAKAGE MAY OCCUR WHEN FILLING THE TANK. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

Negative 1998 Nissan Pathfinder car reviews

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned two issues with the vehicle: performance and leg room for passengers. It seems like the acceleration may not be as strong as you would like, especially with a 5-speed, and that leg room may be a bit tight. However, I'm glad to hear that overall you find the vehicle to be pretty nice and reliable. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Hey there! We understand that you might be considering a 39-month lease, but we wanted to let you know that Toyota offers some great options as well. We recommend checking them out before making a decision. Also, keep in mind that as warranties expire, some cars may experience wear and tear. Let us know if you have any questions!

My vehicle has been well-maintained with 93,000 miles on it, mostly city 2x4 usage, snow 4x4 high, and little 4x4 low usage. I have owned it for 60,000 miles and purchased it in 2000 with few needed repairs. Although the engine is a bit underpowered compared to other SUVs, it still provides a comfortable ride. The 4wd mode is great in snow and it has a great look to it. Despite some recent repairs, I am confident in the overall quality of the vehicle. However, I am considering purchasing a new car as a backup plan.

I purchased a used 98 Pathfinder in 2008 for $5000, and it has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. Despite its age, it only had one major issue during the 4 years I owned it, which was a failed distributor at nearly 175k miles. However, it was a quick and easy fix. While it may not have the best fuel efficiency by today's standards, it was on par with other SUVs of its time. On average, I got around 14-15mpg per tank, depending on how much freeway driving I did. When I bought the SUV, it still had the original battery from 1998, which lasted an impressive 10 years! Although the engine may not be the fastest, it is incredibly reliable and will get you where you need to go every single time. I never experienced any breakdowns or issues outside of routine upkeep such as fluid changes and tire replacements. The driver's seat did get a rip at the outer bolster seam, but I was able to fix it with some needle and thread. I also recommend using a seat cover to prevent future rips and stains, as this seems to be a common issue with Nissan SUVs. Overall, I highly recommend the Pathfinder for its reliability and longevity.Outside of those minor things, this truck is great! It's an excellent choice for a first car if you want something safe, reliable, and easy to fix. Although the fuel bill might be high, it more than makes up for it in reliability. When my Pathfinder got hit and totaled, it was still drivable after a 35mph collision. After 4 years and 50k miles of ownership, I only put in about $1500 in repairs and basic upkeep like oil changes. The insurance company valued it at $5200, which is $200 more than what I bought it for! These are fantastic trucks and a great pick for anyone looking for a reliable SUV on a budget.

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Nissan Pathfinders. I've owned both a '94 and a '98 model, and I have to say, the '98 is my favorite. The ride is so much smoother and it performs really well off-road. It's also super easy to accessorize with things like brush guards and racks. I use mine a lot for kayaking, which takes me all over the southeast and on some backwood trails, and it handles both on and off-road situations really well. The only downside is that the mpg could be better - I usually average around 15-16 mpg. But overall, I absolutely love my Pathfinder! :)

Hey there! I bought my pathfinder over a year ago for two thousand dollars. It had 213,000 miles on it. I don't drive very much, so now it only has 216,000 miles. It's a great car for driving around town, but sometimes it gets a little shaky on the freeway. It will rock back and forth until I slow down a little or speed up. So far, it has been a reliable car. After I purchased it last year, I replaced the timing belt, water pump, and belts because I did not know when they were last changed. I have never used the four wheel drive. Thanks for reading!

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you wrote a review back in April about your experience with your luxury SUV and your Pathfinder. It sounds like you've had quite the journey with your vehicles! I'm glad to hear that you were able to sell your SUV and get back into your trusty Pathfinder. It's always great to have a car that you love driving. Thank you for sharing your story!

I have owned many cars, trucks, and motorcycles over many decades. Without hesitation, I can say that this Pathfinder is one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. I would highly recommend both current and older Pathfinders to anyone who values superb reliability over speed at the drag strip. The mileage is higher than one would expect from a truck-framed 4WD vehicle with enough power to handle serious off-road and on-road driving with exceptional sure-footedness.
