1995 Nissan Pathfinder problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.

The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.

In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

Common 1995 Nissan Pathfinder problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Nissan Pathfinder 1995, several common problems have been reported:

  • Engine Leaks: Owners reported engine leaks, which could be a result of worn-out gaskets, seals, or other components within the engine. Engine leaks can lead to a loss of vital fluids like oil or coolant, potentially causing engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Rust: Rust was a significant problem for some Nissan Pathfinder 1995 owners, particularly affecting the bumper and other exterior parts of the vehicle. Rust can compromise the structural integrity and aesthetics of the car if left untreated, requiring proper maintenance and repair to prevent further deterioration.
  • Clutch and Bearing Issues: Some owners mentioned grinding noises from the bearings, which could indicate worn-out components. Clutch engagement difficulties were also reported, which might be due to clutch wear or hydraulic issues. These problems, although not affecting performance significantly, can lead to discomfort and potential drivability issues.
  • 4WD Engagement Difficulty: Engaging the 4WD system was reported to be challenging by some owners. This issue could stem from mechanical problems within the 4WD system, such as faulty actuators or transfer case components. Proper diagnosis and repair are essential to ensure the 4WD system functions correctly when needed.

These common problems reported by Nissan Pathfinder 1995 owners highlight various issues that can arise with aging vehicles. Addressing these concerns promptly through regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prolong the lifespan and reliability of the vehicle.

  • Summary: I OWN A 1995 NISSAN PATHFINDER XE 4X4. I TOOK THE CAR FOR THE SAFETY INSPECTION EARLIER TODAY. IT DID NOT PASS THE SAFETY REQUIREMENT BECAUSE THE RUST HAS COMPROMISED THE FRAME AND MADE THE CAR UNSAFE TO DRIVE. RUST VULNERABILITY IS A WIDE SPREAD PROBLEM WITH NISSAN'S SUVS. I LOVE MY PATHFINDER AND HAVE INVESTED A LOT OF MONEY IN THIS CAR AND I'M VERY SAD TO SEE IT GO TO THE JUNK YARD BECAUSE THE MANUFACTURER USED AN INFERIOR QUALITY RECYCLED METAL IN MANUFACTURING THE FRAME AND OTHER PARTS OF THE BODY. OVER THE YEARS, I STRUGLED WITH RUST EATING UP PARTS OF THE BODY AND FINALLY EVEN THE FRAME GOT EATEN BY RUST. NISSAN SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND ADDRESS THE RUST PROBLEMS OR NOBODY WILL BUY A SECOND NISSAN EVER!

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-06-24
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I PURCHASED A 1995 NISSAN PATHFINDER SE IN JUNE, 2007 FOR $3000. IN 2010 I HAD TO HAVE THE STARTER REPLACED. THIS VEHICLE WAS LOADED ONTO A TRAILER TO HAVE IT TOWED TO A FRIEND OF MINE TO HAVE THE NEW STARTER PUT ON. WHEN HE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE BACK TO ME, AFTER THE STARTER WAS PUT ON, HE HAD ME LOOK AT THE FRAME. IT WAS SO RUSTED OUT THAT I WAS AFRAID TO DRIVE IT. BUT I HAD TO, ONLY VEHICLE TO DRIVE. YOU COULD PUT YOUR FIST THROUGH THE RUST. AFTER GOING ONLINE AND DOING SOME RESEARCH, I FOUND THAT ALOT OF 1995 NISSAN PATHFINDER OWNERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I CONTACTED NISSAN NORTH AMERICA AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THAT THEY COULD DO. NO RECALLS HAVE BEEN DONE. I ALSO CONTACTED THE INDIANA ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE AND GOT THEM INVOLVED. STILL NO SOLUTION SINCE NO RECALL HAS BEEN DONE. FINALLY IN JUNE OF 2011, I SOLD IT TO A JUNK YARD FOR $250. YES, I COULD HAVE SOLD IT TO A PRIVATE PARTY, BUT DID NOT WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE IF THEY DROVE IT AND THE FRAME BROKE WHILE DRIVING. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE CAN BE AN INVESTIGATION IN THIS. TOYOTA HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND REIMBURSED THOSE PEOPLE AT 150% OF BOOK VALUE. *TR

Negative 1995 Nissan Pathfinder car reviews

  1. Brady Kozey 2025-01-07

The Pathfinder is a reliable vehicle that performs well both on snow and off-road. Although the frame is made of poor quality material, it can be rebuilt to pass inspection. I purchased it for 4600k with 56k miles about 4 years ago and have spent 6k rebuilding every part of the frame to ensure it passes inspection. If you are handy with welding, it can be a great off-road and snow vehicle. However, if you are not, expect to pay for some type of frame rebuild. Keep in mind that it is not a quiet or pretty ride, but it is all about utility.

  2. Gunner Wolf 2024-11-23

I bought my Pathfinder back in 07/99 when it had around 65K miles. Even after driving it for over 200K miles as of 07/07, it still runs as great as the day I got it! The engine has never given me any problems, which is amazing! I absolutely love this vehicle because it fits well with any lifestyle and looks good at any occasion. Although there is a small spot where the paint is fading on the hood, the exterior paint is still in remarkably good condition. The transmission was replaced in '04 (it wouldn't shift to reverse) and the front axle was replaced in early '07, but other than that, there have been no major issues whatsoever. I've put very little money into upkeep, just regular oil changes, limiting off-road use, and taking it easy on the gas pedal. It has worked wonders for me!

  3. Melvin Powlowski 2024-11-20

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my pathfinder. I bought it with just over 200k miles and I have to say, I've really enjoyed driving it so far. After purchasing it, I did some upgrades like new belts, water pump, brakes, and wires/plugs, which I did myself. The cost of the repairs were not too bad (I recommend using an independent mechanic instead of Nissan) and the engine runs very strong. It now has just over 210K miles. I opted for a manual transmission as it gives me the power I want when I want it. I also put Michelin M/S all terrain tires on it, which allows me to go anywhere in 4-wheel drive. It drives great in snow and up into the mountains as well as on the highway. Overall, it's a comfortable ride and drives well. Thanks for listening!

  4. Kaleb Mante 2024-11-15

Congratulations on owning your first Pathfinder! It's impressive that you've driven it for over 200,000 miles with only one major problem. Although, it's unfortunate to hear about the issues you've experienced with the five-speed transmission, bearing failure, exhaust manifold to head gasket failure, and broken stud in the manifold to head. Additionally, it seems like there's a constant squeak somewhere in the suspension. I hope you're able to get those issues resolved soon and continue to enjoy your Pathfinder for many more miles to come!

  5. Wilhelm Zieme 2024-11-13

I can tell you, I absolutely love my truck! While I do enjoy the zippiness of other cars, there's just something about being in command of a truck that makes me feel right with the world. With 209,000 miles on it, my truck has been through a lot with me and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Positive 1995 Nissan Pathfinder car reviews

  1. Garnet Botsford 2025-01-16

I bought this truck slightly used and have put over 120,000 miles on it over the last 7 years. Despite a few problems that were fixed before the warranty ran out (speedometer replaced and exhaust pipes replaced), I recently bought a new transmission. The engine still runs great, and I'm confident that I'll reach 200,000 miles. I continually receive compliments on how well it's holding up. Overall, it's been a fantastic ride!

  2. Jaydon Lynch 2025-01-03

Congratulations on your purchase of a 95 pathy a few months ago! It sounds like you've been taking great care of it by replacing all the necessary parts such as plugs and plug cables, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, engine wiring harness, thermostat, a tension rod, O2 sensor, and even taking care of the interior. However, it seems like you've been having some trouble with rust on the frame and the CV boots. If you live in an area with 4 seasons like Minnesota, it might be worth considering a newer model. Overall, it's great to see that you're taking care of your vehicle and keeping it in good condition. Keep up the good work!

  3. Kendall Wunsch 2024-08-20

I really appreciate my 1995 Nissan Pathfinder. I think the classic styling is great, even though some people might find it boxy. The back doors are a bit small, but the seating is comfortable. I especially love that the rear seats recline! If you're searching for a reliable and affordable SUV, you've found it right here. You can forget about Chevrolet Blazers and Ford Explorers because they don't even come close to the Pathfinder.

  4. Zechariah Goldner 2024-08-19

Hi there! I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a great experience with your Pathfinder! It sounds like you've taken really good care of it, and it's served you well over the years. Even with over 175,000 miles, it's still going strong! I think it's great that you added a remote start and CD player to make it even more enjoyable to drive. It's always tough to say goodbye to a vehicle that's been so reliable, but I'm sure the next owner will appreciate how well-maintained it is. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with Nissan - it's always great to hear from satisfied customers!

  5. Flavio Wiegand 2024-08-19

I love it! It sounds like your vehicle is incredibly reliable and versatile. With 247,000 miles and still going strong, it's clear that you take great care of it. You've driven it in all sorts of conditions and it always performs like a champion. Keep up the great work!
