1993 Nissan Pathfinder problems
The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.
The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.
In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

Common 1993 Nissan Pathfinder problems
The 1993 Nissan Pathfinder has been reported to have several common problems, including engine starting issues, fuel system problems, and electrical system problems.
One of the most common problems reported by owners is engine starting issues, particularly when the engine is cold. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty cold weather sensor or a fuel system problem. Some owners have reported that their Pathfinder requires excessive pumping of the gas pedal to start, while others have reported that the engine simply will not start without repeated attempts. In some cases, the issue may be related to the Pathfinder's fuel injection system, which can become clogged or dirty over time.
Another common problem reported by Pathfinder owners is related to the fuel system. Some owners have reported issues with the fuel pump, which can cause the engine to stall or fail to start. In some cases, the fuel pump may need to be replaced entirely. Other owners have reported issues with the Pathfinder's fuel injectors, which can become clogged or dirty over time, leading to poor engine performance or difficulty starting.
The electrical system is another area where the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder has been reported to have problems. Some owners have reported issues with the Pathfinder's ignition system, including problems with the starter motor or the ignition coil. In some cases, these issues may be related to the Pathfinder's computerized engine control system, which can become faulty over time.
In addition to these common problems, the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder has also been the subject of several technical service bulletins (TSBs) issued by Nissan. These TSBs include guidelines for diagnosing and repairing issues related to the Pathfinder's brakes, struts and shock absorbers, and supplemental restraint system (SRS). Some TSBs also provide information on how to replace specific parts, such as the vent control valve or alloy wheels.
In summary, the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder has been reported to have several common problems, including engine starting issues, fuel system problems, and electrical system problems. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty sensors, clogged fuel injectors, and faulty ignition components. Nissan has issued several technical service bulletins to assist dealerships in diagnosing and repairing these issues.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-09-28
- VIN: JN8HD17Y4PW
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: I'M A CONSUMER WHO JUST HAD FOUR NEW COOPER DISCOVERER AST II TIRES INSTALLED ON A '93 NISSAN PATHFINDER. ALL FAILED WITHIN 709 MILES, APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH OF DRIVING. AFTER DRIVING TWO WEEKS AND 555 MILES, THE FRONT LEFT TIRE SUDDENLY BLEW OUT IN MY DRIVEWAY. IT APPEARED TO FAIL AT THE BEAD. MY TIRE DEALER TURNED THE TIRE OVER TO A COOPER REP WHO EXAMINED THE TIRE AND SAID THE SHOP INSTALLED IT IMPROPERLY, LEADING TO THE FAILURE. THE SHOP DISAGREED WITH THE FINDING, BUT THEY REPLACED THE TIRE FREE OF CHARGE. TWO WEEKS AND 154 MILES LATER, I NOTICED THE THREE OTHER COOPERS WERE FAILING. THE REARS HAD SOFTBALL-SIZED BULGES ON THE TIRE WALL EXTENDING FROM THE BEAD TOWARD THE TREAD. THE RIGHT FRONT HAD A BASEBALL-SIZED BULGE IN THE SAME LOCATION. ALL THE BULGES WERE ON THE INBOARD, WHITEWALL SIDE OF THE TIRE. MY SHOP'S OWNER PERSONALLY PULLED THE TIRES, EXAMINED THEM, AND FOUND BARE BEAD WIRE ADJACENT TO THE BULGE. THE BARE WIRE WAS 1-2 INCHES LONG. HE SAYS THE LOCATION OF THE BARE WIRE/BULGE FALLS ON THE BOTTOM SIDE OF THE TIRE DURING MOUNTING--A SPOT NOT CONTACTED BY THE MOUNTING BAR DURING INSTALLATION. FURTHERMORE, HE SAID HE FOUND NO SCUFFING INSIDE THE TIRE INDICATING CONTACT WITH THE MOUNTING BAR AND NO LOOSE RUBBER INSIDE THE TIRE, FURTHER INDICATIVE OF DAMAGE DURING MOUNTING. HE TRUSTS HIS INSTALLER, A 10-YEAR EMPLOYEE WHO INSTALLS 100 TIRES A WEEK. HE'S CONVINCED THE TIRES WERE DEFECTIVELY MANUFACTURED. MY DEALER HAS FOLLOWED UP WITH COOPER. THE COMPANY INSISTS THE TIRES WERE DAMAGED DURING INSTALLATION, BUT IT WENT AHEAD AND CREDITED THE SHOP THE COST OF THE TIRES. MY DEALER HAD A SIMILAR FAILURE ON A COOPER LIFELINER SLE TIRE A MONTH EARLIER, AND COOPER DENIED ANY PROBLEMS ON THEIR PART IN THAT INCIDENT AS WELL. THE TIRES ARE COOPER ASTII, P235-75-15 I PULLED ONE DOT#...3D1TCLA2305 THANKS --- BRUCE STOFF, ITHACA NY. *NM

- Fire: 1
- VIN: JN8HD17Y6PW
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY,EQUIPMENT
- Summary: I HAD A FIRE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHICH DESTROYED THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS: RADIO, TRANSMISSION, ALTERNATOR, REAR DEFROSTER, REAR WIPERS, REAR WINDOW LOCK, POWER WINDOW MOTOR, TURN SIGNALS, RELAYS, TRANSMISSION SENDING UNITS. AT APPROXIMATELY 82000 MILES THE BATTERY EXPLODED EATING THE PAINT OFF THE RIGHT FRONT FENDER. WITHIN A MONTH, I WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH WHEN I SAW SMOKE IN THE INTERIOR ACCOMPANIED BY ELECTRICAL SHORTING SOUNDS. THE WINDOWS WENT UP AND DOWN, HORN WENT OFF, POWER LOCKS POPPED, AND THE SOLENOIDS IN THE TRANSMISSION BURNED OUT ALONG WITH A NUMBER OF OTHER COMPONENTS. ONLY THREE FUSES WERE BLOWN SO THE FUSE BLOCK WAS INEFFECTIVE IN PREVENTING FIRE. I HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE EXCEPT INTERMITTANT SOUND COMING FROM THE FRONT RADIO SPEAKERS UNTIL THIS HAPPENED.*AK
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2000-12-12
- VIN: JN8HD17S4PW
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: REF. SERVICE BULLETIN #: FC0009202 / NHTSA ITEM #: SB035797 -- EXHAUST NOISE AND EXHAUST SMELL INSIDE VEHICLE DUE TO BROKEN MANIFOLD STUDS. AS THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE, THE RIGHT MANIFOLD STUDS BROKE AT 36,705 MILES AND WAS REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY BY NISSAN. AT 48,654 MILES, THE LEFT MANIFOLD STUDS BROKE AND WAS REPAIRED AT MY COST (APPROX $350). NOW, AT 113,500 MILES, THE LEFT MANIFOLD STUDS APPEAR TO BE BROKEN AND REQUIRE REPAIR. NISSAN REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY, EVEN THOUGH THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW IN THEIR 1993 ENGINES. FOR 1995 & 1996 MODELS, THEY'VE EXTENDED THEIR WARRANTY TO 100,000 MILES. THEN, IN 1997, THEY INTRODUCED A NEW DESIGN WHICH CHANGED THE BOLT SIZE FROM 8MM TO 10MM BOLTS (RECTIFYING THE KNOWN PROBLEM). EVEN WITH SUCH AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT, NISSAN REFUSES TO WARRANTEE THE REPAIRS! I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT A RECALL BE ISSUED REQUIRING NISSAN TO UPGRADE THE ENGINE/EXHAUST SYSTEMS IN THE PRE-1997 NISSAN PATHFINDERS (IN THAT, THIS BROKEN MANIFOLD STUDS PROBLEM WILL CONTINUE TO REOCCUR EVERY 50,000 MILES OR SO). THANK YOU. SINCERELY, MICHAEL J. *AKGALL. *AK

This is one of the best trucks out there! It's extremely durable and looks great too. Plus, with only 19000 actual mileage, it will last forever!
-
I've owned this truck for several years and it has been the BEST vehicle I've ever had. It has had very few mechanical issues and is both comfortable and fun to drive. Although the area of the headliner behind the driver's seat fell off a couple of years ago, everything else inside is awesome. The exterior is even better, with the paint appearing to be in like-new condition. While the cup holders could be better designed, they are still strong. Despite having over 137k miles on it, this truck is still going strong and I will hate to give it up.
-
This SUV was a reliable vehicle, with a track record of 213K miles and the potential to reach 300K miles if properly maintained. Despite being involved in an accident where it was broadsided by a driver who ran a red light, the SUV performed well and protected the driver. The only issue ever experienced was a broken power steering belt. It is clear that this SUV is a durable and dependable vehicle.
-
This vehicle is the real deal! It's a body-on-frame SUV, not just a fancy 4WD station wagon. I've had mine since it was new and it's got 210K miles on it, but I haven't had any major problems yet. If you've kept up with the preventative maintenance, then you should definitely consider buying one!

I bought mine 3 years ago and I absolutely love it!

It is crucial to have the timing belt changed on a '93 Pathfinder upon purchasing it, as failure to do so can result in costly motor damage. Unfortunately, I learned this lesson the hard way when the original timing belt broke after only a month of ownership, resulting in a $2500 motor replacement. Don't make the same mistake I did - prioritize timely maintenance to avoid unnecessary expenses.

I purchased a used Pathfinder in 1998 with 80k miles on it, and it looked sharp. Despite the initial appearance, the vehicle had several issues, including problems with the brakes, transmission, starter, and running boards rusting off.
