2016 Nissan Pathfinder problems
The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.
The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.
In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

Is the 2016 Pathfinder reliable?
Enjoyable car
Hit byone car from side, rear ended by another and hit road debris at 70 mph. All repairs done by Nissan and still like new. Poor mpg around town but decent on cruise control. We keep our cars well past 100k (250k on WRX), so we will likely keep it for many years.
Do 2016 Nissan Pathfinders have transmission problems?
According to owners, the 2014-2016 Nissan Rogues and 2015-2016 Pathfinders hesitate when drivers attempt to accelerate, suffer from excessive revving, jerk at highway speeds, and sometimes even stop working altogether.
What is most common problem on Nissan Pathfinder?
According to CarComplaints, one of the most common Pathfinder issues is transmission failure. This issue is said to be caused by coolant leaking into the transmission – which is also a huge issue.
What year Pathfinder has transmission problems?
Transmission issues - Common in the 2005-2010 model years, Pathfinders with automatic transmissions may fail at around 90,000 miles. Apparently, the oil cooler tube is prone to cracks, causing the coolant to leak into the transmission system.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-10
- VIN: 5N1AR2MMXGC
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: After taking my Nissan Pathfinder to Nissan 112 for a safety recall on February 10, 2024, they improperly completed the recall, leaving the hood stuck closed. Despite multiple appointments and 23 calls with consumer affairs, the issue remains unresolved. The recall I brought my vehicle in for was R22A3, a safety recall having to do with the hood opening during vehicle operation. The procedures state to inspect the lock assembly and secondary latch. If all is well, then clean and lubricate it and your done. If it fails inspection, then replace the Hood Lock Assembly, the Secondary Latch, and the Hood Lock Release Cable. Even in the parts section it states “All three listed parts should be replaced together.” The key here is that it states to replace all three, neither the repair overview or service procedure give you leeway to replace the parts individually. But, that’s what was done. As verified on my receipt from February 10, 2024, and when talking to the service manager on April 4, 2024, they only replaced the hood lock assembly. According to the service manager, this is how they always do it and what he’s always done. Even when reading the recall beside me, he fails to recognize that he has improperly followed the procedures to complete a safety recall. This complaint is less about a new safety issue, and is more related to Nissan 112's improper completion of an existing safety recall. Based on the information I have, this seems like normal business to them, so who knows how often they sign-off recalls without properly executing them.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-13
- VIN: 5N1AR2MM9GC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Occupant Air bag sensor is on constantly and Air bag light on dashboard. My vehicle has never been in an accident. There was a recall issued for my vehicle in 2016. I purchased my car in 2017 new and it was overstock vehicle. The recall was cleared in August 2016 by dealer and I just found this out when vehicle was taken to Nissan dealership for different recall on 4/6/24. Since the vehicle is out of warranty now dealership will not clear recall again but state it is the exact same code. Advised me to contact Nissan USA but they denied my claim for repair. This is an extreme safety hazard and Nissan should honor there safety recall repairs in and out of warranty. Please review my claim because I have seen more complaints online.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-15
- VIN: 5N1AR2MM1GC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE

This is a life-threatening situation when the vehicle loses engine power while it is being driven. Additionally, we have experienced multiple instances of the vehicle not starting after it had been parked. We have researched this on the internet and have found that other Nissan owners are experiencing this same issue. When the vehicle stops running while driving or when it will not start after being parked, we get these symptoms: everything lit up on the dash TPMS light, I-Key error, no speedometer, no tachometer the engine cooling fan is running vehicle will not start back up When you push the start button the dash lights come back on the cooling fan would kick on engine will not start

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-02
- VIN: 5N1AR2MN2GC
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Every year when it warms up, the brakes fade. I've had new pads, rotors, new fluid. Still have brake fade. Took it to mechanic, he tried a new master cylinder. Still have brake fade. This is a known issue for these vehicles. Something needs to be done. Nissan needs to be held liable for their faulty brake systems. Someone can get hurt or killed. Nissan should be forced to open a safety recall! Sitting at red light or stop signs, pedal sinks to floor and vehicle starts moving. How many complaints is it going to take???? I've seen a lot of owners complaining about this exact issue!
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-20
- VIN: 5N1AR2MN4GC
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact stated that while her husband was driving approximately 45 MPH and coming to a stop light, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to respond. The contact stated that the brake pedal went to the floorboard. The contact pumped the brake pedal and the vehicle stopped; however, the braking distance was extended. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact pulled into the nearest gas station where the vehicle started jerking for a minute after coming to a stop. The contact stated that the brake pedal was making an abnormal suction sound while depressed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the abnormal suction sound was most likely due to the brake booster and brake master cylinder. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case regarding the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 64,175.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-10
- VIN: 5N1AR2MM0GC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Passenger Airbag sensor not showing that airbag is on for front passenger seat even though passenger sitting there. Recall issued in 2016 and Nissan still does not have a fix for this yet.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-01
- VIN: 5N1AR2MM2GC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The passenger airbag doesn’t activate at all. The OCS sensor is faulty. When someone sits in the front passenger seat, the airbag remains off. This is a known defect with Nissan Pathfinders. We were told ours will not be fixed as our VIN is not included in the recall. However, this exact defect is known and has been recalled in hundreds of thousands Nissan Pathfinders, including the 2016 model year. Not fixing this can result in death or dismemberment in the case of a collision in which the airbags should deploy and do not. After much correspondence with Nissan, they refuse to pay to fix this know defect because our specific VIN was not included. We are asking to include our VIN in this know defect recall.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-10
- VIN: 5n1ar2mm9gc
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Hood latch was marked as repaired (cleaned and lubricated) in recall report but secondary latch still sticks and I have to manually push the lever out of position to get my hood to latch down properly. All the dealership did was look at it, grease it, and call it good. It is still caked with gunk and sticks.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-29
- VIN: 5N1AR2MM1GC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My front differential and transmission failed at the same time while I was driving on a major highway. I had to repair both components at a dealership costing me over $8000.
AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-01
- VIN: 5N1AR2MN9GC
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: When I purchased this vehicle I quickly noticed a feature or standard that this vehicle has concerning passenger safety vs airbag ON/OFF There is a lamp beside the display area that indicates if the pass bags are on (lamp is off) or if they are off (lamp is on) If the passenger is under a certain amount the airbag turns itself off...At least that was my observation for at least 4 months after purchase. This standard/feature isn't working anymore I guess? Because the lamp is always ON stating that the passenger airbags are OFF. I notified the dealership, they said they could not inspect the issue unless I paid for their time and then service (fix of the issue)
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-01
- VIN: 5n1ar2mm8gc
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The passenger side air bag light will light up thaymt it is disables when a passenger is occupying the seat. It will not go off to indicate that the airbag is turned on foe the seat occupant until I turn the car off and restart. May have to repeat a couple times or have passenger step out of car, sit back on seat and reconnect lap belt.
AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-01-01
- VIN: 5N1AR2MM1GC
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: When you move front seats forward or back the airbag sensor under the seats breaks. The air bag off light is always lit up for passenger seat even when adult sits there, and the drivers airbag light is blinking on dashboard all the time. A week after buying vehicle I took it back to dealer and they said it was a recall and it was fixed. A week later it was back on I went back and they said nothing they can do it was already fixed. Nissan dealership told me same thing. It is not fixed and now I am paying car payments for a car I can't get an inspection sticker on, so I can't drive it. If it was a recall and they claim to have fixed it and the same problem happens again it should be fixed with an improved part so it don't happen again. The dealership also told me with those lights on there is a possibility of the airbags going off for no reason or they may not go off when in an accident. This is a serious problem and needs to be taken seriously but instead I am being told I need to pay for the recalled problem because they fixed it once already. Clearly they didn't fix it properly or at all but my vin number says it was done.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-13
- VIN: 5N1AR2MM9GC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I purchased this as a new used 2016 Pathfinder in October 2021. Within about 2500 miles in December of 2021, the radiator cooling fan assembly was making noise and had to be replaced. It is now May of 2022, about 3000 miles later, and the same thing has to be replaced. There were no other messages or symptoms other than the noise the fan makes when the bearings are shot. It has not been inspected by anyone other than myself and my mechanic at the time the first fan assembly needed replacement. I am about to take the vehicle to a Nissan dealer to confirm what I already know. When it is replaced I will keep the old part for inspection.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-08
- VIN: 5n1ar2mm9gc
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The hood does not stay latched. Periodically it comes unlatched from its locked position or it will not lock down when being closed after an oil change. The latch is faulty and if it comes undone and it is windy I am afraid it will fly up and smash the windshield and or detach and kill someone! It has happened more than once. This is the latest incident.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-17
- VIN: 5N1AR2MMXGC
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Sunroof spontaneously exploded. While driving at approximately 35 miles per hour on a smooth, relatively level, paved road, the sunroof spantaneously exploded. The elevation above sea level was less than 200ft, and the outside temperature was in the mid 30s. The sunroof was not hit by an object. The explosion sounded like a gunshot, and we truly believed that our car had been shot at. The incident occurred in good weather in day light conditions. Had this incident occurred on a highway, at night, or in adverse weather conditions, this event could have easily resulted in a serious accident. It took approximately 10 minutes for us to realized that the explosive sound had come from the roof of the car. Our insurance company, Allstate, covered the cost of a new sunroof minus a deductible. I have learned from online research that exploding sunroofs are not uncommon, and that NHTSA has been investigating them for several years. We trust our government to establish timely standards to ensure public safety. NHTSA needs to take timely action to stop this phenomenon. Inaction has the potential to cause public harm, and would be a failure of the DOT to do its job ensuring public safety.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-18
- VIN: 5N1AR2MM6GC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Passenger side air bag indicator is off all the time even with an adult in the seat. The red blinking indicator light flashes for the air bag on the control panel. The air bag cannot be manually turned on or off. If in a crash I do not know if the air bag will deploy. Your site shows 0 recalls other sites show a sensor recall. What do I do?
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-30
- VIN: 5N1AR2MMXGC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While driving 70 mph on the turnpike, the hood of my vehicle came up and shattered my windshield, bent my hood and roof, amongst other damage. Despite the hood covering my windshield, I was able to safely navigate to a pull-off on the road. My passenger and I were shook up, but not injured. It had been weeks since I had last opened my hood. I have the vehicle at the collision center now. I should hear from the claims adjuster tomorrow.
LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-02-01
- VIN: 5N1AR2MM5GC
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact stated that the hood of the vehicle would not properly secure and latch when closed. After having the oil changed, the mechanic was unable to secure the hood. The cause of the failure was not determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 44,000.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-13
- VIN: 5N1AR2MN4GC
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: My car hit 62,000 miles, it started having transmission issues. It shakes, makes large noises, the car tries to stall, having issues accelerating, and loss power. I am concerned that the car will turn off or broke down while driving
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-10
- VIN: 5N1AR2MM6GC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THE VEHICLE STARTED MAKING A CLICKING LIKE SOUND WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONER IS ON. THE SOUND WAS NOTICED WHILE PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO NISSAN DEALERSHIP WHICH STATED IT WAS THE FAN ASSEMBLY THAT NEEDED REPLACING AT $1000.00 THE VEHICLE DON'T HAVE 65000 MILES.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-02-17
- VIN: 5N1AR2MN3GC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: FAN BEARINGS IN THE TWIN FAN SHROUD HAVE FAILED AND ARE CREATING A LOUD NOISE AND HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO LEAD TO ENGINE OVERHEATING AND POTENTIAL ENGINE TROUBLE. THE NHTSA AND NISSAN HAVE PUT OUT A TSB (NTB17-100) IN OCT 2017. ALTHOUGH MY VEHICLE IS PAST WARRANTY SEARCHING THE WEB IT APPEARS THIS HAS BEEN A VERY BIG PROBLEM FOR NISSAN PATHFINDERS. BECAUSE THE COMPLETE FAN SHROUD (2 FANS-RADIATOR AND COOLING FANS) ALONG WITH A COMPUTER MODULE ARE PART OF THE FINAL ASSEMBLY THE COST TO REPAIR IS SIGNIFICANT ($800). A FAN REPLACEMENT ALONE WOULD BE MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE BUT NISSAN ONLY PROVIDES A FULL ASSEMBLY VS COMPONENT FIX.
2016 Nissan Pathfinder recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HOOD:LATCH
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2013-2016 Pathfinder vehicles. On certain Pathfinder vehicles, the secondary hood latch may malfunction and remain in the unlatched, unsecured, position when the hood is closed.
- Consequence: An unsecured hood could unexpectedly open while driving, obstructing the driver's view, and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: The remedy is in development. Interim owner notification letters were mailed July 18, 2022. A second notice will be mailed once the remedy is available. The remedy is expected in March 2025. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall are R22A2 and R22A3.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.
- Consequence: If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, and QX60 and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. I love driving my Pathfinder! The heated seats and steering wheel are amazing, and I really appreciate how well it handles. It's also nice and quiet on the highway, contrary to what another review said. The navigation and Bluetooth are great features too. So far, I'm really happy with everything about it, except for the heat and remote start. While driving, the heat is great, but it doesn't stay warm inside the vehicle when sitting still. Additionally, the remote start only lasts for about 8 to 10 minutes, and most of the time it won't restart via remote. This can be frustrating, but I'm sure I'll figure out the best way to work around this small issue. I traded in a Kia Soul for this Pathfinder in December of 2022, and even though it's a 2016 model, it drives like it's brand new. The acceleration is great, the steering is very responsive, and the ride is smooth. The gas mileage for an SUV is also really good.

After reading so many disparaging reviews, I saved the Nissan Pathfinder for my last test drive. Earlier that day, I had driven the top-rated Kia Sorento and the Honda Pilot. I can say that they are all nice in their own way and can be noisy when the engine is pushed. If you're looking for a tight, feature-packed, precision machine with a ton of value, go with the Kia Sorento. If you love the smoothness of a Lincoln but want a more versatile vehicle, go for the Honda Pilot. HOWEVER, if you want that elusive 'farfegnugen' - the youthful joys of driving a car that literally MOVES with your own body and sense of gravity - be sure to drive the Nissan Pathfinder before you make up your mind.

Fantastic leather seats. Roomy. Drives smooth

We purchased our Pathfinder several months ago for our family of four (plus friends and gear) based upon its spaciousness and fuel economy. We absolutely love it! This car is a joy to drive every day and the third row entry is great for the kids. It has plenty of power and amazing fuel economy. I highly recommend it!

What would you like to have in it? I have heated cloth seats, heated mirrors, and a heated steering wheel. Additionally, there is a tow hitch included.

This vehicle has had several issues since purchase, and despite my efforts to have them addressed by the dealership, they have not been resolved. The gas mileage is around 12 mpg, and the transmission was replaced at 20,000 miles. While I continue to experience other issues, Nissan maintains that the vehicle is working as intended. Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing a Nissan.

Update: Hi there! Just wanted to give you a heads up that the lift gate might make a sound on warmer days and could automatically close on you, so please be extra careful. The good news is that my car is under warranty, so Nissan is fixing it for free. However, they won't fix it once the warranty is up. If you're not too concerned about fuel economy and power, then this could be the perfect SUV for you! I did have some trouble with Bluetooth pairing, but I personally prefer Ford Sync. I've found that I get the best MPG when I put the car in 2WD mode. Although Nissan says that AUTO mode changes the drive mode to 2WD for higher MPG, I haven't found this to be true. I do hope that Nissan moves away from CVT transmission someday. In fact, I've heard that Nissan dealers are trying to get rid of this vehicle from their lots by reducing the prices. For example, a sales rep went from 40K to 32K in less than 5 minutes for a Platinum 4WD. So, if you're considering buying, I would suggest spending a bit extra on an MDX or Mazda CX9. Thanks for reading!

The reliability and size of the fuel tank have been a bit of a challenge for us. We have decided to sell ours before the warranty expires. We have had a couple of issues with the rear lift gate not opening in auto or manual, but thankfully both were covered under warranty. However, they happened 6 months apart, so we are unsure of what else may go wrong with that system (at a cost of $500 per repair). We are also having our second AC compressor replaced, which is a bit pricey at $1200-$1500 each time, but thankfully it is still under warranty. The fuel range with the real world mpg is also lower than we expected. We have had a few minor repairs on our CVT, but it still doesn't feel quite right. On the bright side, the ride is very comfortable!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Pathfinder that I purchased back in September 2016. It's been a great car, with only 46,000km on it. I've taken great care of it, washing it every week and keeping it in the garage. Unfortunately, I noticed some transmission fluid leaking last week and was given an estimate of $1100 for repairs. While this was a bit of a shock, I understand that these things can happen with any car. Overall, I still highly recommend Nissan as a brand, as I've had a great experience with them. Thanks for listening!

Update: I am ready to trade in!, this vehicle is not worth it at all....the more I have it the more I hate it. The performance is poor.....is a V6!, this should have more power when riding on the highway. The seats are uncomfortable. not enough specs for the price. Rogue should be a better option. I do not recommend this vehicle. Please read my old notes before reading the update. thanksthe first thing that you have to know is that the bluetooth technology that is in the car is the worst! unless you want to spend an extra 10,000 dollars to get the fully loaded version, but then that would put you on high priced vehicle, and with that might price you might be able to get some thing with more luxury. The bluetooth capabilities are just to hear a phone call come in....that is it! You may ask.....what about audio streaming? NOPE, not available. you would have to buy a dongle/adapter for it or some audio cables that are going to be hanging out of your middle console, and look crappy. (yes im picky like that) i just feel that it is not worth the price. my 20,0000 nissan rougue had audio streaming; i paid twice as much for this one. I do not get navigation, so i have 6 BUTTONS from my stearing wheel to the control panel that do the same thing!....... and that is to change my radio station one up......really? I know that my review is mostly on the sound system ...and it is, but i like to go down to the details like these. When i purchased the car i asked if bluetooth was included and they said yes, but i never thought that it would be just for calls. when i told my dealer about the complaint, the sales guy said "yeah sometimes the cheaper cars have better feautures"....(wow) Also, nissan stated that they spent 6000 just on the entertaining system; mmmm i don't know, you would think that 6000 dollars can get you a higher quality screen for your dash board. there are also two "back" buttons, 2 "settings" buttons, 2 "info" buttons that alone is just 6 buttons wasted. i hope that this review makes sense to you, i do think that the car is a good reliable car, but after driving it for several months, i feel like it is not worth the money that i am paying on it.
