2013 Nissan Pathfinder problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.

The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.

In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

Common 2013 Nissan Pathfinder problems

The Nissan Pathfinder 2013 is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include problems with the CVT transmission, the engine cooling fan, the alternator, the A/C system, and the wheel bearings

One of the most common problems with the Nissan Pathfinder 2013 is related to the CVT transmission. Owners have reported intermittent lack of power, jerking, shaking, or "judder" as Nissan calls it. Nissan has issued several bulletins on the issue, and solutions have included reprogramming the TCM (updating the CVT software), replacing the control valve assembly (part of the CVT transmission), or replacing the CVT transmission.

Another common problem with the Nissan Pathfinder 2013 is related to the engine cooling fan. Some owners have reported that the engine cooling fan has failed, causing the engine to overheat. This issue can be caused by a faulty fan motor or a blown fuse.

The alternator is also known to be a problem in the Nissan Pathfinder 2013. Some owners have reported that the alternator has failed, causing the battery to drain and the vehicle to stall. This issue can be caused by a faulty alternator or a loose belt.

The A/C system is another common problem area in the Nissan Pathfinder 2013. Some owners have reported that the A/C system has failed, causing the vehicle to blow hot air instead of cold. This issue can be caused by a faulty compressor or a leak in the A/C system

Finally, the wheel bearings are known to be a problem in the Nissan Pathfinder 2013. Some owners have reported that the wheel bearings have failed, causing a humming sound that becomes louder or quieter when changing direction and is more audible at higher speeds. Wheel bearing replacement costs between 80 to 180 dollars for parts and 200 to 350 dollars for labor

In summary, the Nissan Pathfinder 2013 is known for several common problems, including issues with the CVT transmission, the engine cooling fan, the alternator, the A/C system, and the wheel bearings. It is important for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchasing.

  • Summary: I started having issues with my brakes. I had recently had the front rotors and pads replaced, but I still heard squeeking, and a little fishtailing on my back end. I figured I needed my brakes in the rear checked, so I took it to Pep Boys for a free inspection. The mechanic showed me that my rear control arm on the left was very loose, and the compartment that connected to it was severely rusted thru. He told me this was across the whole back end and it was actually part of my FRAME. He said it is called a K-Frame and it should not be rusted through with my car being barely 11 years old. There are massive holes all the way across. He said that is why I thought that I might need my struts replaced because of a thunk sound when pulling off. There was no connection at all. He says I should not drive it AT ALL because my whole back end could fall off literally!

  • VIN: 5N1AR2MM3DC
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: After owning this vehicle from brand new, it now has a rotting rear subframe. Nissan customer support is not interested in providing good will or recall for this issue. My mechanic has reported that the same model and year vehicle showed up a week prior with the exact same issue. A core part of the frame should not crumble due to rust within a 10 year timeframe. Searching on the internet has revealed multiple other people reporting the same issue. [XXX] I believe many others will be registering this complaint in the coming months as they fail their inspections or come to their mechanics with a complaint of noise. I would be happy to provide pictures of my rotted subframe, but it looks very similar to the pictures referenced above. STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-18
  • VIN: 5N1AR2MM3DC
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The vehicle was pulling to the right when driving or breaking. Brought to the mechanic and he discovered that the rear passenger side subframe is totally rotted. Appears to be a common problem with Nissan from my understanding now. He suggested I just trade it in. I don't have that luxury so will attempt to have it repaired. I have looked for a recall and so not see one but I do see numerous complaints regarding this issue on various Nissan boards. Some have said they registered a complaint as well. Since this appears to be a common Nissan problem, their corporation should be responsible for the repair. I'm told not to drive unless necessary.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-18
  • VIN: 5N1AR2MM3DC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: In September 2020 there was a recall on the CVT transmission for several cars. I was not notified whatsoever, so consequently I had to pay for a replacement at my local dealership in February 2021. I was told that I was receiving a new transmission. In December 2023, I was informed that I would need a whole replacement. I went back to my local dealership and they informed me that they would be willing to fix it with a replacement from the factory if I did the labor. They stated I would have to do a claim with NISSAN USA for the replacement. I called and was informed that I did not qualify because of the mileage and warranty period. I went back to the dealership and explained the issue, they said they could do nothing also. I HAVE DOCUMENTS WITH ALL THE DETAILS I WOULD LIKE TO SEND IN. The link to upload was not working for some reason. I tried several times.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-01
  • VIN: 5N1AR2MM0DC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The subframe on 2013 Nissan Pathfinder was completely broken from rot. I brought it to a shop because it was pulling to the left and making a clanking noise. I was told this is a common problem with 2013 Nissan’s. Car started pulling to the left about a month ago. Car was inspected about 2 weeks ago. After doing research it was learned that the 2013 pathfinders were never sprayed properly with some kind of rust protection. The pathfinder made a newly designed model for 2013 and never properly sprayed it. There are multiple places you can find others with 2013 pathfinder’s that have rusted out in the same area once the car get to about 140000 miles. Mine is just over 140000 miles

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-18
  • VIN: 5N1AR2MMXDC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The sunroof exploded while the car was in motion. There was a loud boom distracting me while I was driving, in addition to glass falling on me and around my car putting me in danger. Glass also landed in the street, putting the safety of others at risk. There are remnants of shattered glass in my car and where the sunroof used to be. There were no warning lights or messages prior to the issue. The problem has not yet been confirmed or inspected by any of the above. Most of the glass flew out of the car, meaning that the sunroof was not hit by a foreign object.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-09
  • VIN: 5N1AR2MN9DC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When Accelerating from a stop, or increasing speed from a turn, the car sputters, power fluctuates, and sometimes it vibrates and feels like I am driving over a grid. The car sometimes feels like it's going to stall. I have owned this car for 10 years and this problem has been ongoing. It has been happening alot more recently. I have not been in an accident but I feel very unsafe when this happens and afraid it could cause an accident. I have been told it could be a known CVT issue but in the past, Nissan dealers always dismissed my complaints about the issue. No warning lamps or messages have ever appeared regarding this.

2013 Nissan Pathfinder recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 11 recalls for different components of the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder.

  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HOOD:LATCH
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2013-2016 Pathfinder vehicles. On certain Pathfinder vehicles, the secondary hood latch may malfunction and remain in the unlatched, unsecured, position when the hood is closed.
  • Consequence: An unsecured hood could unexpectedly open while driving, obstructing the driver's view, and increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: The remedy is in development. Interim owner notification letters were mailed July 18, 2022. A second notice will be mailed once the remedy is available. The remedy is expected in March 2025. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall are R22A2 and R22A3.
2021-01-20
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2013-2015 Nissan Pathfinder vehicles. The location of the brake light switch may cause the brake light switch relay to repeatedly open and close. Overtime, this can cause the relay to stick in the "ON" position, with the brake lights remaining illuminated even when the brakes are not applied. Additionally, this may interfere with the brake-shift interlock, allowing the driver to shift the vehicle out of the "Park" position, without depressing the brake pedal.
  • Consequence: Continual illumination of the brake lights can prevent other drivers from realizing the vehicle is actually slowing down, increasing the risk of a crash. With the brake override activated, the driver will not be able to accelerate normally, increasing the risk of a crash. The driver can shift the vehicle out of the "PARK" position without depressing the brake, allowing the vehicle to rollaway, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, either re-install the brake light switch or swap positions with the Automatic Speed Control Device (ASCD) switch; depending on the model year vehicle. In addition, the brake light relay will be replaced with a new one. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 1, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall PC786. Note: this recall supersedes 16V-380.
2016-05-31
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Pathfinder vehicles manufactured June 20, 2012, to June 13, 2013. The brake light switch may have been installed incorrectly causing the relay to make intermittent contact and repeatedly cycle. This may result in the relay remaining in the "ON" position, causing the brake lights to remain illuminated even when the brakes are not applied. Additionally, the brake light switch may interfere with the brake-shift interlock, allowing the driver to shift the vehicle out of the "Park" position, without depressing the brake pedal.
  • Consequence: If the brake override is activated, the driver will not be accelerate normally, increasing the risk of a crash. If the brake lights remain illuminated, other drivers may fail to stop when the vehicle actually brakes, increasing the risk of a crash. If the driver inadvertently shift the vehicle out of the "PARK" position without depressing the brake, the vehicle may rollaway, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake light switch and, as necessary, replace the relay, free of charge. The recall began on July 25, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.
2016-04-26
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.
  • Consequence: If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, and QX60 and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. Interim notices were sent to owners on May 31, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima and Pathfinder vehicles, 2013-2014 Nissan Sentra vehicles, 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles, 2014-2015 Infiniti QX60 vehicles and 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid vehicles. The affected vehicles received an incorrect occupant classification system (OCS) control unit during a repair. These OCS control units may incorrectly classify the front passenger seat as empty, when it is occupied by an adult.
  • Consequence: If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger air bag would be deactivated. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software, free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

The secondary latch may remain in the open position when the hood is closed.
  • Consequence: If the primary hood latch is released and the secondary latch fails during operation of the vehicle, it could cause the hood to open during vehicle operation impairing the driver's vision, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will modify the angle of the hood release mechanism to provide additional length to the release cable, free of charge. The recall began on March 9, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

In the affected vehicles, the internal oil cooler (ITOC) hose may detach from the cooler due to inadequate clamping force, allowing transmission fluid to leak.
  • Consequence: The loss of transmission fluid could cause the transmission to function improperly and the vehicle to stop accelerating, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install an oil hose repair kit, free of charge. The recall began on May 12, 2014. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

  • Consequence: If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger airbag would be deactivated. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software, free of charge. The recall began on April 14, 2014. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP
  • Summary: Nissan is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Nissan Pathfinder vehicles manufactured April 18, 2012, through September 20, 2013; model year 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles manufactured September 15, 2011, through January 16, 2013; and model year 2014 Infiniti QX60 vehicles manufactured January 17, 2013, through September 20, 2013. In the affected vehicles, during light braking on rough roads, the antilock brake system (ABS) brake pressure output software may lead to an increase in stopping distance.
  • Consequence: The increased stopping distance may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the ABS, free of charge. The recall began on November 18, 2013. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Nissan is recalling certain model year 2013 Pathfinder and Infiniti JX vehicles manufactured December 3, 2012, through January 29, 2013. The front brake torque member was improperly cast resulting in structural weakness. This can lead to premature failure and cracking.
  • Consequence: If the brake torque member fails, the brake caliper may move and contact the inside of the road wheel, resulting in reduced braking, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the manufacturing date of the torque members and replace them, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on May 20, 2013. Owners may contact Nissan Customer Service at 1-800-647-7261.

  • Summary: Nissan is recalling certain model year 2013 Altima, LEAF, Pathfinder, Sentra, and Infiniti JX35 vehicles. Sensors within the passenger Occupant Detection System (ODS) may have been manufactured out of specification. This may cause the system to malfunction and permanently suppress the passenger airbag.
  • Consequence: If the vehicle is involved in a crash necessitating airbag deployment and the passenger airbag is suppressed, there may be an increased risk of personal injury.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ODS sensors and replace them as neccessary, free of charge. The recall began on May 6, 2013. Owners may contact Nissan Customer Service at 1-800-647-7261.

Negative 2013 Nissan Pathfinder car reviews

  1. Nicolas Von 2024-11-06

I've owned this vehicle for two months and unfortunately, I've had to have the transmission replaced twice. It's frustrating because the vehicle will randomly lose power under acceleration, which can be dangerous. However, I want to make sure others are aware of this issue, as it seems to be quite prevalent in this particular vehicle. It's disappointing that Nissan and the dealerships haven't been more transparent about this problem. I relied on Edmunds review of the vehicle, but unfortunately, they didn't mention this pervasive, expensive, and dangerous condition in one of the vehicle's major systems - the transmission. After the vehicle's warranty runs out at 60k, you can expect a $4900.00 bill for repair. The dealership keeps the transmission in stock and is happy to see you for this expensive repair. Unfortunately, Nissan offers no explanation or repair for this issue, so your new transmission will be the same unreliable design. I would advise caution when considering this vehicle, even if you're under warranty. The fact that the loss of power may happen to you in a critical driving situation should dissuade you from a purchase, not to mention the loss of use during repair. I hope this review helps others avoid my mistake.

We're sorry to hear about the issues you've experienced with your car. Despite its great appearance, it's disappointing to hear that the quality hasn't met your expectations, especially after purchasing vehicles for 30 years. We hope that the lemon law process goes smoothly for you and that you're able to find a resolution soon. Please let us know if there's anything we can do to assist you further.

The front air bag system was temporarily out of service, but it has been fixed now. The rear seat heaters were not working, which was missed during the PDI process, but they have been repaired as well. Although it was not a good start, we have taken care of all the issues and ensured that they will not happen again.

I have owned several cars from different brands, including Honda and Toyota, but my experience with Nissan has not been positive. I would like to share my experience with our first Nissan, a Pathfinder, and suggest that people consider other options. Unfortunately, we have spent a lot of money and time on repairs for this vehicle. We started experiencing transmission problems before even reaching 10,000 miles, and despite multiple visits to the shop and out-of-pocket expenses, the issue was not resolved until the CVT was finally recalled. It was frustrating to deal with this issue, as it was well-documented by dealers but not acknowledged by the company until a recall was issued. Recently, we have also experienced a shifter problem that required a $1,000 repair, and we were disappointed to find out that this issue is not yet officially recognized by Nissan. We have not received any support from the dealer or Nissan customer affairs, and it is disheartening to see the lack of accountability and customer care. While these are only two of the biggest problems we have faced, I would caution against purchasing a Nissan vehicle. Thank you for considering my experience.

Before purchasing this vehicle, it is important to research the CVT. While this vehicle may have some issues, it is important to note that the CVT transmission can be problematic. In some cases, the car may not respond to acceleration demands when pulling out into a busy intersection. Additionally, there have been some concerns with the transmission, two wheel bearings, and three safety upgrades for airbag sensors, all of which have required attention before reaching 52,000 miles. Despite these issues, it is important to note that the vehicle has been serviced by the dealer every 3,000 miles. While I have had some challenges with this vehicle, I believe it is important to share my experience with others. It is up to each individual to decide whether or not this vehicle is right for them. Thank you for taking the time to read my review.

Positive 2013 Nissan Pathfinder car reviews

I'm so glad that my SUV has been such a great vehicle for hauling my grandkids and friends. I especially love the power lift gate and the heated seats in the second row. We even got the tow package, which has been really useful. Overall, my husband and I have both really enjoyed our choice. However, there are a few downsides to note. As the car has gotten older, there has been some road noise, and the reverse camera isn't the best. Additionally, we've had to have the transmission computer reset at the dealer. But despite these issues, we're still very happy with our SUV!

  2. Braulio Yundt 2024-10-02

I was searching for a family car with 3 rows, so I considered the Acura MDX, Mazda CX-9, and Infiniti JX. The JX would have cost $15k more fully loaded, with only a few additional features like Lane Departure Warning, which isn't worth the extra cost. The CX-9 and MDX don't compare when it comes to size. Even at 6 feet tall, I still have leg room in the 3rd row. The technology is great, and it's very comfortable. Despite driving at 80-85 mph, there is minimal road noise, which still impresses me to this day. The 4WD is also excellent. I get 19.7 mpg, but again, I drive at 80-85 mph. The 14 Speaker Bose sound system is fantastic, and the TVs are great for keeping the kids entertained.

  3. Scottie Lemke 2024-09-28

We've had our car for a month now and it's been great! We recently took a 4-hour trip to visit family and even with a headwind for much of the journey, we still managed to get just over 24 MPGs! One of the best features is that we can slide the second row back, so our two kids in car seats don't kick the back of my seat. It's also really easy to get nieces and nephews into the 3rd row because you can just slide the middle row up, even with a big car seat! Some people have expressed concerns about the transmission, but we haven't had any issues. It does feel different, but that's because it's a new and improved design. The 'stutter' that some people have mentioned is likely just a result of inconsistent pressure on the gas when accelerating. I've tried to get the transmission to act up, but as long as I press down smoothly, there are no problems.

  4. Johnathan Wyman 2024-08-04

At 72,000 miles, I can confidently say that this is the best travel and overall SUV I have ever owned. The only repair I have had to make was a $75 pressure suppressor in the gas line, and the CVT transmission has never been a problem. The MPG is very good for its size, consistently getting 25-26 on the highway and 19 in short city drives. I highly recommend using the surround cameras for parking, as they are a must-use all the time. I have the Platinum model and am considering trading it in for a 2021 before the boxy off-road style returns in 2022. The power is also great for trailers. Thank you for considering this SUV!

  5. Orin Stoltenberg 2024-07-27

Although there have been some issues with stuttering and surging in the transmission, this car has some great features. The leather is soft and comfortable, and the middle seats can slide forward even with a carseat attached, which is a really innovative feature. Additionally, the transmission has been replaced under warranty and now works perfectly. While the interior layout and electronics may be outdated, an aftermarket Bluetooth adapter can be added for audio streaming. The only downside is that the sun visors tend to break fairly regularly. Overall, this car has a lot to offer and is definitely worth considering.
