2014 Nissan Pathfinder problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.

The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.

In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

I had the car less than 1 month in my possession and out of approximately 30 days, it did not run consecutively for 7 days. This information was turned into the Virginia State Police - Office of Inspections; however, they found no fault, but this is a clear misrepresentation of vehicle identification and mileage.

POWER TRAIN,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-16
  • VIN: 5N1AR2MN7EC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The transmission jerking/shuddering problem has been ongoing in the Nissan Pathfinder ever since a safety recall in 2014. Passenger airbag light is always on, even if an adult is seated there. The airbag warning light flashes on the dashboard. Nissan’s OCS system seems to be frequently complained about online. Dealers say it’s just wear and tear which is just unbelievable. Dealers quote repair / replacement cost for the frame and harness anywhere from $1200-$2900. I want to report this issue so that others with the same problem may come forward so a recall be issued.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-10
  • VIN: 5N1AR2MN4EC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I had no light come on I was driving and I was crossing an intersection when the vehicle started shaking and jerking it was going slow then it just jerked me fast while there was on coming vehicles this happened suddenly and now the car light came on a day or two later and the car will not move forward or backwards I contacted the manufacture and they said there was nothing they can do sad this day I almost wrecked 3 times I even asked if they could pay for the labor and I would buy the part because I believe this was a manufacture issue everything I have read is about people having the same issue this could have been prevented and I thank God I didn’t die I did pray the whole drive back home and I feared for my safety and my babies safety . This needs to be addressed and there needs to be a recall before people get seriously injured or lose there lives and it shouldn’t matter about how much miles the vehicle has I believe the manufacture knew about this in the beginning but if they don’t want to fix it at least sell us the parts at a decent price because it’s gonna cost more to fix it than what the car is worth

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-27
  • VIN: 5N1AR2MN4EC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Back on 5/27/21, I purchased a new transmission from Murfreesboro Nissan for my 2014 Nissan Pathfinder at 128k miles. Everything seemed fine at first, but a few months later, on 2/18/22, I got the CVT flush at 146k miles as advised. I mentioned that my Pathfinder was jerking, similar to when a transmission issue occurs. I was reassured that it was normal. Concerned about the ongoing transmission problems, I visited Murfreesboro Nissan on 9/16/22, when my check engine light came on. I specifically requested a diagnostic test and mentioned the transmission issue once again. However, I was informed that the problem was with the catalytic converter, which I had to get fixed elsewhere. I was once again told it was normal for the transmission to feel that way. Months passed, and on 12/2/22, at 159k miles, I returned to Murfreesboro Nissan for another diagnostic test. The situation had worsened, and this time the service advisor confirmed that the problem was indeed with the transmission. To my dismay, the advisor even admitted that she wished she had advised me to sell the transmission when I purchased it in 2021, as they apparently have consistent issues with their CVTs. She acknowledged that going from 128k miles to 159k miles should not require a new transmission, especially after getting the CVT flushed as recommended. Murfreesboro Nissan will not cover it since it just passed the 1 year mark of the transmission warranty though I have been complaining about it while it was still in warranty.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-15
  • VIN: 5N1AR2MM9EC
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: We took are vehicle in for AC service. At this time the dealer performed a recall fix for a break relay switch. After the supposed recall was corrected we had issues. The issues were loss of power after pressing and releasing brake. The other issue was having to make multiple attemps to start car. They happen at random moments after driving vehicle over 25 miles in city driving. The dealer claime and charged 2.5k dollars to replace a transfer transmission part. This was not the issue and we still lose power after braking. The main problem is we didn't have these issue until the dealer made the supposed repairs. There are no error codes for any issues with the vehicle. I don't think the recall procedure was completed or was not completed properly.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-02
  • VIN: 5N1AR2MM7EC
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: While driving I noticed the front alignment was all of a sudden off. When parked I checked around the vehicle and found the driver side rear wheel to be kicked out at an angle. I checked the rear under carriage and found the nearly the whole rear subframe and crossmember to be rusted out. The bushing that held the control arm to the subframe came off in my hand. For a vehicle with only 80k and always garaged I was surprised at the extent of the rust. Had the full subframe failed at highway speed it could have been a lot worse. The rear wheel assembly was only connected to the car by the spring and control arm. After some online research I have found many other examples of similar failures with the rear subframe on this generation of Nissan Pathfinders. No recall exists for this failure. $4700 repair bill.

2014 Nissan Pathfinder recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 11 recalls for different components of the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder.

2022-06-13
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HOOD:LATCH
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2013-2016 Pathfinder vehicles. On certain Pathfinder vehicles, the secondary hood latch may malfunction and remain in the unlatched, unsecured, position when the hood is closed.
  • Consequence: An unsecured hood could unexpectedly open while driving, obstructing the driver's view, and increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: The remedy is in development. Interim owner notification letters were mailed July 18, 2022. A second notice will be mailed once the remedy is available. The remedy is expected in March 2025. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall are R22A2 and R22A3.
2021-01-20
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2013-2015 Nissan Pathfinder vehicles. The location of the brake light switch may cause the brake light switch relay to repeatedly open and close. Overtime, this can cause the relay to stick in the "ON" position, with the brake lights remaining illuminated even when the brakes are not applied. Additionally, this may interfere with the brake-shift interlock, allowing the driver to shift the vehicle out of the "Park" position, without depressing the brake pedal.
  • Consequence: Continual illumination of the brake lights can prevent other drivers from realizing the vehicle is actually slowing down, increasing the risk of a crash. With the brake override activated, the driver will not be able to accelerate normally, increasing the risk of a crash. The driver can shift the vehicle out of the "PARK" position without depressing the brake, allowing the vehicle to rollaway, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, either re-install the brake light switch or swap positions with the Automatic Speed Control Device (ASCD) switch; depending on the model year vehicle. In addition, the brake light relay will be replaced with a new one. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 1, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall PC786. Note: this recall supersedes 16V-380.
2016-05-31
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Pathfinder vehicles manufactured June 20, 2012, to June 13, 2013. The brake light switch may have been installed incorrectly causing the relay to make intermittent contact and repeatedly cycle. This may result in the relay remaining in the "ON" position, causing the brake lights to remain illuminated even when the brakes are not applied. Additionally, the brake light switch may interfere with the brake-shift interlock, allowing the driver to shift the vehicle out of the "Park" position, without depressing the brake pedal.
  • Consequence: If the brake override is activated, the driver will not be accelerate normally, increasing the risk of a crash. If the brake lights remain illuminated, other drivers may fail to stop when the vehicle actually brakes, increasing the risk of a crash. If the driver inadvertently shift the vehicle out of the "PARK" position without depressing the brake, the vehicle may rollaway, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake light switch and, as necessary, replace the relay, free of charge. The recall began on July 25, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.
2016-04-26
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.
  • Consequence: If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, and QX60 and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. Interim notices were sent to owners on May 31, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima and Pathfinder vehicles, 2013-2014 Nissan Sentra vehicles, 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles, 2014-2015 Infiniti QX60 vehicles and 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid vehicles. The affected vehicles received an incorrect occupant classification system (OCS) control unit during a repair. These OCS control units may incorrectly classify the front passenger seat as empty, when it is occupied by an adult.
  • Consequence: If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger air bag would be deactivated. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software, free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

The secondary latch may remain in the open position when the hood is closed.
  • Consequence: If the primary hood latch is released and the secondary latch fails during operation of the vehicle, it could cause the hood to open during vehicle operation impairing the driver's vision, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will modify the angle of the hood release mechanism to provide additional length to the release cable, free of charge. The recall began on March 9, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

(Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti QX60 vehicles manufactured August 14, 2014, to November 5, 2014, and 2014-2015 Nissan Rogue vehicles manufactured August 12, 2014, to November 15, 2014. During the assembly process, the front wheel hub assembly fasteners may not have been properly torqued.
  • Consequence: The under-torqued fasteners may result in a brake caliper separating from the wheel assembly causing a reduction in braking performance or reduced steering control. These conditions increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and tighten any loose bolts to the proper specification, free of charge. The recall began February 2, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: WHEELS:LUGS/NUTS/BOLTS/STUDS
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2014 Pathfinder and Rogue vehicles and 2014 Infiniti QX60 vehicles. The right side wheels of the affected vehicles may have one lug nut each that was not properly tightened.
  • Consequence: If the lug nut becomes loose from not being properly tightened, it may fall off, allowing the other lug nuts to become loose, possibly resulting in a wheel separation, and increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and tighten any loose lug nuts to the correct specification, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by the end of June 2014. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Altima, LEAF, Pathfinder, and Sentra, model year 2013 NV200 (aka Taxi) and Infiniti JX35 and model year 2014 Infiniti Q50 and QX60 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the occupant classification system (OCS) software may incorrectly classify the passenger seat as empty, when it is occupied by an adult.
  • Consequence: If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger airbag would be deactivated. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software, free of charge. The recall began on April 14, 2014. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP

In the affected vehicles, during light braking on rough roads, the antilock brake system (ABS) brake pressure output software may lead to an increase in stopping distance.
  • Consequence: The increased stopping distance may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the ABS, free of charge. The recall began on November 18, 2013. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: Nissan North America Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014 Pathfinders manufactured from July 25, 2013, to September 5, 2013 with Almond interiors only. The instrument panel tear seam on the passenger frontal air bag was incorrectly cut on the back side of the instrument panel which could cause the air bag to not deploy properly.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the improper air bag deployment may increase the risk of personal injury.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected instrument panel assemblies, free of charge. The recall began on November 18, 2013. Owners may contact Nissan Customer Service at 1-800-647-7261.

Negative 2014 Nissan Pathfinder car reviews

  1. Rickey Cummings 2025-01-05

I purchased a 2014 Pathfinder SL in November 2013. As a long-time Nissan owner, I have always trusted the brand for its high quality and reliability. However, I am disappointed that Nissan has produced a vehicle with so many complaints about the CVT Transmission. As a customer, I feel let down and betrayed. Unfortunately, I have experienced acceleration problems, shakiness, and poor power range, which has resulted in multiple visits to the shop within a short period of time. I am not alone in my experience, as I have read similar complaints from other Nissan owners. I hope Nissan takes these concerns seriously and addresses them promptly to ensure the safety of its customers. Despite my current frustrations, I remain hopeful that Nissan will take the necessary steps to regain my trust and loyalty.

I recently traded my 2015 Rogue for a 2015 Pathfinder as I needed more space and towing capabilities. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with the vehicle. Specifically, I have noticed a shudder or judder at low speeds while accelerating at 25 mph, as well as a severe shudder when decelerating down hills or on inclines while off the accelerator or braking. Despite having the computer reprogrammed, the issue persists. I am currently waiting for the dealership to receive more information from the NISSAN Regional tech to determine the next steps to correct the issue. While I am disappointed with the situation, I am hopeful that a solution can be found. I have heard of this issue with the CVT, but had no problems with my Rogue, so I assumed it had been resolved as NISSAN had claimed. I am still a fan of NISSAN and hope to continue driving their vehicles in the future.

(Update) The car still runs well and I still get good MPG's in city/highway driving, averaging 22-24. However, I have noticed a few issues with the materials used in the car. For instance, the lights on the ceiling above the doors that help light up the second row don't seem to be working. Additionally, I have had a piece of rubber sealant come off the top of my car, which is disappointing. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the spaciousness of the car, especially with a child seat, and the ability to slide the whole second row back so the child isn't kicking the back of the driver/passenger seats. The Bluetooth connectivity is also great, and I love how it connects instantly to my phone. Although the handling can feel sluggish at times, the acceleration is great and the car looks stylish and sporty. Overall, I have had a positive experience with this car, and while I may consider other options in the future, I would still recommend it to others. It's clear that this car isn't in the same league as Infiniti or Lexus, but I found the interior to be smooth and the controls easy to manage. There are also plenty of helpful options to choose from, which is why I ultimately chose this car over the Explorer. I've been getting great gas mileage on both long and short trips - I can even drive from Houston to Oklahoma City on a single tank of gas! The only issue I've had is with the backup camera, which has been acting up. The screen changes colors randomly and gets fuzzy, but I can still see out of it. I took it to the dealership and they fixed it for free, but the problem came back after about a week. They replaced the whole console last time, but I don't really care what they replace as long as the camera stops messing up. I bought the car in 2014 with about 4500 miles on it, and now it has about 32,000 miles on it and it's still going strong. Update - I no longer have any issues with the backup camera. The car now has 101,000 miles on it and it still runs well, although the materials inside the cabin are starting to wear down. While I still like my vehicle and enjoy driving it, I don't think I would purchase another Pathfinder. I'm ready to try something new after this.

This SUV has a unique feel to it, with some interesting quirks like shudders and jitters. It may remind you of an old school Cadillac or dump truck, but that's part of its charm. While turning corners, you may feel a bit of a zigzag, but it adds to the excitement of the ride. Overall, it's a fun and unique driving experience that may take some getting used to.

  5. Dewayne Schimmel 2024-11-14

I bought this vehicle brand new in May 2014. Unfortunately, in October of the same year, with less than 5,000 miles on the clock, the transmission started slipping at speeds above 60mph. I took it to the dealer, who suggested that it might be due to bad gas and recommended filling up with 89 octane. However, in November 2014, the transmission started slipping constantly (with no warning lights coming on). I took it back to the dealer, and they confirmed that it was indeed a bad transmission. They assured me that they were putting in a new transmission, but it is still in the shop, so I am unable to confirm whether it is new or remanufactured. It is very disappointing to have a vehicle with less than 6k miles and costing $45K that has had these issues. I would advise staying away from the Pathfinder.

Positive 2014 Nissan Pathfinder car reviews

  1. Taylor Grimes 2024-10-22

I purchased this car as certified used and have driven it for 14k miles. It's perfect for our family with two young children, especially since we live in a large city and only need one car. The third row is incredibly functional, and it's by far the best one I've seen. You can easily access it with car seats in place, and it's comfortable enough for adults. I'm also impressed with its performance and fuel efficiency. It's a definite upgrade from my 2010 Honda Pilot and 2006 Grand Cherokee. The SL model has some great luxury and convenience features, which are comparable to its cousin, the Infiniti QX60. Although I was initially concerned about the CVT transmission issues that some people have reported, the 100k mile warranty put my mind at ease. I'm happy to report that I haven't had any issues with the car, and I really appreciate the smooth, constant power of the CVT. Plus, the discounts offered on the Pathfinder compared to its competitors are unbeatable. Overall, it's the perfect car for our family, and I couldn't be happier with it.

  2. Alfonzo Smith 2024-08-26

    1. This Hybrid SUV is priced $10k to $20k under all other premium based models, making it an affordable option. 2. Enjoy a luxurious ride with ample leg and head room, as well as heated and cooled leather seats in the front and heated seats in the back. 3. With an all-around MPG of 26 and a city/highway mix resulting in 29 MPG on the first tank, this car is also economical. 4. The Pathfinder boasts a stylish design that is sure to turn heads. 5. I am still amazed and surprised by all the appointments, and I absolutely love this car! I am so happy with my purchase!

  3. Ola Bruen 2024-08-04

We purchased a 2014 Pathfinder Platinum in May 2015 and have been enjoying it ever since. However, after only 3 months and a little over 7,000 miles, we experienced a transmission issue that required replacement. While this was disappointing, we remain confident in the quality of Nissan vehicles, having owned 2 Altimas before this one with no problems. We understand that some other owners have reported similar issues, but we are hopeful that Nissan will continue to address and resolve these concerns. We have a long drive from the coast of North Carolina to Fort Worth, TX in late September, but we are confident that our Pathfinder will perform well. Overall, we are still very satisfied with our purchase and look forward to many more enjoyable miles on the road.

  4. Alexandro Bashirian 2024-07-24

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with our Pathfinder AWD that we bought back in May 2014. We've put over 6,500 miles on it and I'm happy to report that we haven't had any problems with it. As someone who previously owned an Expedition for several years, I was initially hesitant to switch to a crossover, especially with all the bad press about CVTs. However, I'm pleased to say that the overall experience has been positive. Not only can I still tow my 18' boat, but I'm also saving gas for daily use. Admittedly, the switch from a traditional automatic to a CVT isn't 100% transparent, but once you get used to it, it delivers a great experience. Thanks for listening!

  5. Rashawn Leffler 2024-06-29

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 PathFinder SV. Last year, I upgraded from my 2014 model and I couldn't be happier with the decision. The newer engine model and transmission make for a smoother ride and I love the added features like heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and remote start. I even added leather seats as an aftermarket option! The vehicle is versatile, handles great, and tows up to 6000 pounds with ease. The only issue I've had is with the entertainment system, which has malfunctioned a few times. Despite demonstrating the issue to the dealership where I purchased the vehicle, they have refused to repair or replace it and instead blamed it on my smartphone. While this has been frustrating, I still love my PathFinder and would highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a new vehicle. Thank you for taking the time to read my message! This car has been a great addition to our family, especially for road trips and sporting events with our 4 kids, 2 adults, and 3 sets of hockey equipment. The ride is smooth, the handling is good, and the acceleration is surprisingly fast. We've been getting great mileage, usually around 22-23 in mixed driving. I'm excited to see how well it handles our boat. We haven't experienced any shudders or hiccups at all, just pure enjoyment. Even after 50,000+ miles, we still love our 2014 model. While the Bluetooth and hands-free features could be better, we know that they have been updated in the newer models. We plan to purchase the slightly upgraded version when this one wears out, probably at 150,000+ miles.
