1990 Nissan Pathfinder problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.

The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.

In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1995-08-10
  • VIN: JN8HD17Y5LW
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: EXHAUST MANIFOLD LEAKS ARE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE PATHFINDER WITH MANY OF THE REPAIRS BEING PERFORMED MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. MY FIRST REPAIR WAS COMPLETED IN THE FALL OF 1996 WITH THE MANIFOLDS REMOVED, TRUED TO FACTORY SPECIFICATIONS, BROKEN MANIFOLD STUDS REPLACED WITH THE FACTORY RECOMMENDED PARTS AND REASSEMBLED BY A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP. THE REPAIR CAST $800.00 AND LASTED 6 MONTHS. NISSAN IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEMS WITH THESE MANIFOLDS AND IN 1997 ISSUED A "SILENT" RECALL ON THEIR 1996 AND 1997 PATHFINDERS BUT WILL NOT HELP THE FOLKS WITH THE OLDER TRUCKS. FACTORY REPLACEMENTS OF THE MANIFOLDS HAVE NOT ELIMINATED THE PROBLEM FOR OTHERS AND AT $800.00 FOR THE REPAIR DOING IT MORE THAN ONCE SEEMS EXCESSIVE. THERE ARE SEVERAL WEB SITES THAT HAVE ADDRESSED THIS PROBLEM AND IT SEEMS WELL DOCUMENTED, WE FEEL THAT NISSAN NEEDS TO BE PUSHED TO DO WHAT'S RIGHT. THANK YOU. *AK

  • VIN: JN8HD17Y4LW
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: THERE ARE 2 RECURRING PROBLEMS THAT APPEAR TO BE PATENT DEFECTS WITH MOST EARLY 90'S PATHFINDERS. THEY DESERVE INVESTIGATION BY DOT. FIRST IS PREMATURE AND REPEATED FAILURE OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, PROBABLY (BUT NOT CERTAINLY) DUE TO INADEQUATE OIL COOLING. I NOTE THAT IN THE YOUR DATABASE THERE ARE 30+ REPORTS OF TRANSMISSION FAILURES (SEVERAL OF THEM INDICATING MULTIPLE FAILURES) FOR MODEL YEARS 1989-1991. THERE ARE ALSO A DOZEN OR MORE REPORTS OF EXHAUST MANIFOLD STUD FAILURE - MOST INDICATING MULTIPLE FAILURES - AND NISSAN DEALERS REPORT THAT THIS HAPPENS TO VIRTUALLY EVERY EARLY 90'S PATHFINDER. AT $300-400 A POP, THIS IS AN OUTRAGE...AND IF YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THE MANIFOLD (WHICH MAY WARP WHEN THE STUD BREAKS), IT'S $1,300 PLUS! I'VE SPENT OVER $8,000 ON REPAIRS FOR THESE 2 TYPES OF PROBLEMS, AND NISSAN IS UNRESPONSIVE. Negative 1990 Nissan Pathfinder car reviews

  1. Wilford Runolfsson 2024-11-19

When you first look at the 1990 Pathfinder, it's hard not to be drawn in by its rugged exterior styling. However, after 155,000 miles and 4 transmission replacements, it's safe to say that our particular model has been a bit of a lemon. Dealing with the various issues, from transmission problems to AC failure, has been a real hassle and financial burden. While the Pathfinder was a pioneering attempt at a 4-door SUV with car-like qualities, it unfortunately falls short in terms of reliability and power.

  2. Timmothy Kessler 2024-09-28

Since purchasing, the vehicle has required approximately $10,000 in necessary repairs. These repairs were essential to keep the vehicle running, otherwise, it would have been worth nothing.

  3. Consuelo DuBuque 2024-09-02

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my SUV. I bought it with 107,000 miles and a brand new transmission, and now, four years later with an extra 43,000 miles, it's still going strong! I've had to replace the water pump, timing belt, and alternator, but overall it's been a very reliable car. I would definitely recommend it to someone else!

Positive 1990 Nissan Pathfinder car reviews

  1. Burley Breitenberg 2024-10-15

It's a great car! It's very reliable, economic on gas, and has good performance. However, the dash electronics are very poor.

  2. Zackery Fisher 2024-05-22

This car was a lifesaver for me. I needed a reliable daily driver and this car needed some love. I drove it for 3 years without any problems, putting 35,000 miles on it before selling it to the next owner. It was able to get me around in all kinds of nasty Seattle weather, from rain to snow to sleet and more.

  3. Alek Runolfsdottir 2024-04-15

This Nissan has over 150,000 miles on it and it runs great with no noise in the engine. It doesn't squeak and it still has a lot of power. The four-wheel drive is convenient and necessary if you're a young guy. It's tons of fun and very dependable. You should definitely get one!

  4. Lowell Huels 2024-03-16

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with this thing I bought on an impulse. I was pleasantly surprised with how well it turned out. After replacing the timing belt, it felt like a brand new truck! It's got plenty of power, a quiet interior, and has proven to be incredibly reliable. Just a heads up, the electrical system can be a bit tricky, so it's best to get a professional to handle that. On the bright side, the sound system is fantastic! Even with a cloth interior, it still looks amazing for its age. And the best part? I got all of this for just $1000! What a steal, right? Let me know if you have any questions!

  5. Chester Treutel 2024-02-20

After selling Chevrolet Trucks for over 25 years, I unfortunately became ill and lost my demo. I found myself on our used car lot and stumbled upon this little SUV sitting on the 'Rock Lot', where we keep the cars that can't be sold for one reason or another. I had the lot porter wash it and then had it checked by the service department. At that time, it already had 104K miles, but everything checked out well. I had all the fluids changed, the AC charged, and a new set of tires put on. She was ready to go, and that was 7 years ago. It has been the best SUV I have ever driven, and it's soon to hit 200K miles. I drive it almost every day with the knowledge that she has never left me stranded!
