1992 Nissan Pathfinder problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.

The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.

In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

Common 1992 Nissan Pathfinder problems

The Nissan Pathfinder, like many vehicles, has had its share of problems over the years. While the 1992 model year is not specifically mentioned in the search results, we can still look at common problems reported for other model years to give a general idea of potential issues.

  • Navigation system problems: Some owners of the 2017 Pathfinder have reported issues with the navigation display, including the navigation controls freezing, the backup camera getting stuck, and the malfunctioning reverse assist display. These problems may require updating the navigation software or replacing the navigation system itself.
  • Transmission issues: Nissan Pathfinders made from 2005 to 2010 have been reported to have transmission failure, particularly in the 2005-2007 model years. These issues are often caused by a defective part within the coolant system that can cause coolant to mix with the transmission fluid, leading to transmission and radiator problems.
  • Timing chain issues: Pathfinder owners have reported problems with the timing chain guides, which can cause rattling or tapping noises from the front of the engine during cold starts. This is often due to a manufacturing defect that produces sharp-edged timing chains that cut through the guides, causing the system to fail earlier than designed.
  • A/C and heating problems: Some owners of the 2015 Nissan Pathfinder have reported issues with the climate system, where the system is unable to blow hot or cold air into the cabin while the SUV runs below 950 RPM or at idle. These issues may require replacing the failed A/C condenser fan or the A/C unit itself.
  • CVT issues: Nissan's CVT issues have been widespread, with owners claiming that the Pathfinder's CVT transmission system is slow to respond, overheats easily, and shudders while accelerating. These issues can pose a significant safety risk when trying to merge on a busy highway and can sometimes cause the transmission to slip out of Park.

It is important to note that these problems may not be exclusive to the mentioned model years and could potentially affect other years as well. When considering a used Nissan Pathfinder, it is always a good idea to research the specific model year and consult with a professional mechanic to ensure the vehicle is in good condition.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1999-09-17
  • VIN: JN8HD17Y1NW
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: WHILE TRAVELLING FROM ELOY, AZ. TO CALIF. ON AN OUTING, THE LEFT REAR TIRE TREAD SEPERATED FROM THE CARCASS. THE TIRE DID NOT LOSE ANY AIR . I CHANGED IT, PUTTING ON THE SPARE (ALSO THE SAME BRAND AND SIZE). ON THE RETURN TRIP, ABOUT 3 DAYS LATER, THE RIGHT REAR TIRE DID EXACTLY THE SAME THING. IBORROWED A SPARE FROM A FRIEND AND CONTINUED HOME. I CONTACTED SEARS, BUT THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING WITHOUT THE ORIGINAL SALES RECIEPT, WHICH I COULDN'T FIND. I BOUGHT 4 NEW TIRES AND PUT THE REMAINING 2 ON A SMALL UTILITY TRAILER. I PUT THE SPARE BACK WHERE IT BELONGED, AND ABOUT 4 MONTHS LATER I NOTICED THAT THE ENTIRE TREAD WAS PEELING AWAY FROM THE CARCASS. THE TIRE WASN'T EVEN BEING USED AND IT SEPERATED. I DON'T KNOW WHO MADE THESE TIRE FOR SEARS. IN LIGHT OF THE CURRENT PROBLEMS WITH FIRESTONE TIRES, I AM CURIOUS IF THERE HAS BEEN OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THIS PARTICULAR TIRE. IN 1977, WHILE I WAS A POLICE OFFICER, IHAD A TIRE TOTALLY SEPERATE AND BLOW OUT, CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL AND TOTALLING THE CAR. THESE TIRES WERE SHELL STEEL RADIALS MADE BY FIRESTONE. TWO WEEKS AFTER THE ACCIDENT, THE LEAA IN WASHINGTON SENT OUT A MEMO WARNING ALL AGENCIES TO RESTRICT SPEEDS OF VEHICLES WITH THESE TIRES TO LESS THAN 70MPH. JUST CURIOUS AS TO MANUFACTURER OF THESE TIRES.( DOT NUMBER: CKHH52C125 TIRE SIZE: P225/75R15 )

Negative 1992 Nissan Pathfinder car reviews

  1. Kiley Kulas 2024-11-11

It's great to hear that you still own this Pathfinder and have driven it for 146 thousand miles! Although you've had to replace the brakes and rotors a few times, as well as the distributor and transmission (which could have been due to being hit in the rear end), it's good to know that the engine doesn't use any oil and that it's been a very dependable car. It's a shame that the body and frame are rusting out, but it's clear that you've taken good care of it. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  2. Trenton O'Reilly 2024-03-21

I bought this truck when I started college and it has been great! The only thing that needed repair was the starter and the rear shocks due to a little offroading. It has lasted so well throughout the harsh ND winters and started every time. How amazing is that when we are talking about a 17 year old car?

  3. Devon Ruecker 2024-03-12

This truck is the best vehicle you'll ever own! It was built to last and the great thing about it is that you can go offroad without any serious modifications! If you're a serious offroader, you can beef it up, but that would require swapping out the independent front suspension with a solid axle, which can be expensive. If you buy one used and maintain it well, it should last another 100K!

Positive 1992 Nissan Pathfinder car reviews

  1. Bud Rohan 2024-10-01

I absolutely love this vehicle! I got it about 2 months ago and put in $700 to get the brakes redone and some of my own man-hours to get it in top shape. I am 17 and don't have to make the payments, so I sort of drive it like that, and it takes it all. It creaks and groans, but nothing too major. We were looking at a 1991 Explorer, but it was sold before we could buy it. I'm so glad we got this one! It has plenty of room, loaded with features, and it looks good too.

  2. Adan Rippin 2024-09-23

I got this truck with 203,000 miles and have only had to replace the starter and battery. It always starts and has no trouble with my long bi-weekly drives. I'm excited to drive this truck in the Colorado winter.

  3. Adrain Block 2024-09-22

No other SUV can compare to the excellence of the 1992 Nissan Pathfinder. It provides transportation second to none, delivering a smooth instantaneous ride and infinite cargo capacity. Its impressive infinite gas mileage and luxurious interior are sure to leave you in awe. This is the ride for you! Please note that there is a cracked windshield and a slight odor of a gymnasium as of 24 Dec 2020.

  4. Allan Dickinson 2024-09-04

I absolutely adore my 2000 Pathfinder! It has been such a reliable truck over the years, and I trust it more than some people I've met. Thanks to my amazing mechanic who takes great care of it, my Pathfinder still has excellent power, tight steering, and just the right amount of bounce (thanks to a 2: body lift) to make it an absolute joy to drive. The only minor issue I've encountered is that, as with any 17-year-old truck, rust has started to become a problem. But overall, I couldn't be happier with my beloved Pathfinder!

  5. Zachery Baumbach 2024-08-05

Your pathfinder has over 220,000 miles and is still running strong. The only problem you had was with the exhaust manifold gasket, but it was easy to fix.
