2001 Nissan Pathfinder problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Pathfinder is a range of sport utility vehicles manufactured by Nissan since 1986. Until the third-generation model, the Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform which it shares with the Navara/Frontier. The front end of the D21 (first generation) and R51 (third generation) Pathfinder is notably identical with the Navara/Frontier up until the B-pillars.

The Pathfinder was marketed as the Nissan Terrano (Japanese: 日産・テラノ, Hepburn: Nissan Terano) outside North America. Beginning in 2004, the R51 series was marketed internationally as the Pathfinder.

In 2012, the R52 series Pathfinder was released as a three-row crossover SUV based on the unibody Nissan D platform, moving away from the body-on-frame chassis format. The role of a mid-size body-on-frame SUV in Nissan's global lineup was passed to the Terra/X-Terra, which was released in 2018 and based on the D23 series Navara.

Common 2001 Nissan Pathfinder problems

The Nissan Pathfinder 2001 has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is related to the transmission. In some cases, the transmission has failed within the warranty period, causing frustration for owners who were left with repair costs.

Another common problem with the Nissan Pathfinder 2001 is related to sensors, coil packs, and the CD player. Several owners have reported replacing sensors, coil packs, and the CD player due to various issues. These parts seem to be prone to failure, causing inconvenience for owners who need to replace them.

The Pathfinder's fuel efficiency is also a concern for some owners. While the vehicle is known for its towing capabilities and solid build, it is not the most fuel-efficient SUV on the market. Owners have reported getting around 300 miles per tank in the city and 350 miles per tank on the highway, averaging about 330 miles combined per tank.

Some owners have reported issues with the body rusting out, particularly in areas where the vehicle has been exposed to salt. This can lead to significant repair costs and can affect the vehicle's overall longevity.

Finally, some owners have reported issues with the upper and lower trailing arms, which can cause a "shake of death" when they go bad. This can be a significant safety concern and can affect the vehicle's handling and performance.

In summary, the Nissan Pathfinder 2001 has several common problems that owners have reported. These include issues with the transmission, sensors, coil packs, and the CD player, as well as concerns about fuel efficiency, body rust, and the trailing arms. While the Pathfinder is known for its towing capabilities and solid build, these issues can cause inconvenience and significant repair costs for owners.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-04-13
  • VIN: JN8DR09Y21W
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: IN APRIL 2019, I WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 55 MPH TOWING A SMALL TRAILER IN THE RIGHT MOST LANE OF A 3 LANE HIGHWAY. AS I APPROACHED A HILL, THE PATHFINDER SUDDENLY SMELLED LIKED SOMETHING WAS ON FIRE AND THE ENGINE STOPPED RUNNING. I MANAGED TO PULL OFF THE HIGHWAY AND COAST TO A STOP ON THE SHOULDER. THE BURNING SMELL LASTED ABOUT 5 MINUTES, BUT I COULD NOT TELL WHERE THE SOURCE WAS AT THE TIME. I RAN SEVERAL DIAGNOSTIC TESTS, INCLUDING ECU CODES, BUT DID NOT FIND ANYTHING INDICATIVE OF A PROBLEM OF THIS NATURE. IN JANUARY 2020, I ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE AFTER REPLACING SEVERAL WORN OUT DRIVETRAIN COMPONENTS (CLUTCH, ENGINE, RADIATOR, ENGINE GASKETS) AND FOUND THAT IT WOULD NOT START. I FOUND A BURNED OUT FUSE TO THE ECCS2, 10 AMP CIRCUIT. I REPLACED THE FUSE AND IMMEDIATELY NOTICED THAT THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE DASHBOARD EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS NOT ON OR RUNNING AT THE TIME. AGAIN THE SMOKE LASTED SEVERAL MINUTES. THIS TIME I WAS ABLE TO SEE SMOKE COMING FROM THE COMPUTER CASING OF THE VEHICLE'S ECU. I DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY IMMEDIATELY AND REMOVED THE ECU FROM THE VEHICLE. I DISCOVERED A BURNED CHIP INSIDE. AFTER SEVERAL HOURS OF RESEARCH, I WAS ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE CAUSE AND LEARN THAT THIS HAPPENS TO MANY OTHER MODELS OF NISSAN VEHICLES OF SIMILAR YEAR MODEL. THE CAUSE IS ALWAYS THE SAME - THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE SEALS FAIL, THEN WATER GETS INSIDE THE ELECTRIC IACV MOTOR AND WHEN THE ECU TRIES TO COMPENSATE FOR THE IACV FAILURE, IT OVERLOADS THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT AND SHORTS OUT THIS PARTICULAR CHIP. SOME PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED SPENDING SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS TO HAVE NISSAN REPLACE PARTS AND REPAIR THEIR ECU AS THESE VEHICLES ARE NOW OUT OF WARRANTY.

  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: THE SUB-FRAME/CRADLE 54400-0W00 ON THE PASSENGER SIDE IS ROTTED OUT TO THE POINT THAT IT WILL NOT PASS A PA STATE INSPECTION. THIS WAS FOUND BY MY MECHANIC WHILE HE WAS REPLACING THE FRONT ROTORS AND BRAKES. MY MECHANIC HAS ORDERED A NEW SUB FRAME + BOLTS TO REPLACE THE ROTTED OUT SUB-FRAME. I WONDER HOW MANY OTHER SUB-FRAMES ARE ROTTED OUT ON PATHFINDERS FROM 1996 TO 2004 WHICH IS WHEN NISSAN USED THIS PARTICULAR PART. MY CONCERN IS IF THIS PART FAILS COMPLETELY WHAT WILL HAPPEN??? I HAVE RESTRICTED DRIVING MY PATHFINDER UNTIL THE NEW PART IS INSTALLED. I THINK SOMEONE SHOULD LOOK INTO THIS PROBLEM, BECAUSE WHEN IT FAILS AND IT WILL SOMEONE WILL GET HURT OR EVEN KILLED? THE CONTROL ARMS MOUNTED TO THIS PART WHICH CONTROLS STEERING. THIS PART PLUS LABOR WILL COST ME ABOUT $1500.00.

2011-04-20
  • Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: STEERING:COLUMN
  • Summary: NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1996-2004 PATHFINDER AND MODEL YEAR 1997-2003 INFINITI QX4 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD, OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON D.C., WEST VIRGINIA AND WISCONSIN. IN AREAS OF THE COUNTRY IN WHICH HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT ARE USED, A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAY ENTER AN ASSEMBLY LOCATION HOLE IN THE UPPER STRUT HOUSING, CAUSING WATER TO COLLECT AT THE MATING SURFACE OF THE STRUT HOUSING PANEL AND THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. OVER TIME, THIS SNOW/WATER AND SALT INTRUSION MAY RESULT IN CORROSION OF THE STRUT TOWER HOUSING IN SOME SUBJECT VEHICLES.
  • Consequence: THE STRUT HOUSING MAY CRACK AND PULL AWAY FROM THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. THIS MAY LEAD TO GRINDING NOISES, INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, AND POSSIBLY THE STEERING COLUMN TO BREAK, RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
  • Remedy: NISSAN WILL INSPECT THE STRUT HOUSING AND REPAIR THE VEHICLES AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. AN INTERIM NOTIFICATION LETTER WAS SENT OUT IN MAY 2011. THE SECOND NOTICE WAS MAILED ON JULY 25, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

  • Manufacturer: DOPE, INC.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS
  • Summary: DOPE, INC. IS RECALLING 42,540 COMBINATION CORNER AND BUMPER LAMP ASSEMBLIES OF VARIOUS PART NUMBERS SOLD FOR USE AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT FOR VARIOUS PASSENGER VEHICLES. THESE HEADLAMPS FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, "LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT." THESE LAMPS DO NOT CONTAIN THE REQUIRED AMBER SIDE REFLECTORS.
  • Consequence: DECREASED LIGHTING VISIBILITY MAY RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: DOPE, INC. WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER A FULL REFUND FOR THE NONCOMPLIANT COMBINATION LAMPS. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 28, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DOPE, INC. AT 1-626-272-1798.

  • Remedy: SABERSPORT WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER A FULL REFUND FOR THE NONCOMPLIANT COMBINATION LAMPS. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 11, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SABERSPORT AT 1-909-598-7589.

  • Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, TENNESSEE, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA , WISCONSIN AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, DURING THE COATING PROCESS OF THE FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY, AN INSUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF COATING MAY HAVE BEEN APPLIED AT THE LOWER MOUNTING BRACKET. THIS COULD RESULT IN AN OPENING IN THE COATING WHICH CAN ALLOW WATER TO ENTER AND MAKE CONTACT WITH THE BARE METAL OF THE TUBE.
  • Consequence: THIS MAY RESULT IN SURFACE RUST BUT NOT PERFORATION OF THE TUBE. HOWEVER, IN THOSE AREAS OF THE COUNTRY WHICH USE HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT IN THE WINTER, IF A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAKES CONTACT WITH THE BARE METAL, CORROSION MAY OCCUR TO A DEGREE WHICH RESULTS IN PERFORATION OF THE TUBE. IN THIS CASE FUEL LEAKAGE MAY OCCUR WHEN FILLING THE TANK. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY WITH A NEW ONE WITH AN IMPROVED COATING PROCESS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 26, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Negative 2001 Nissan Pathfinder car reviews

I am extremely disappointed with my 2001 Nissan Pathfinder LE. Despite following the service manual, the vehicle has failed inspection two out of the three years I have owned it. The exhaust system, a coil, and all four O2 sensors have been replaced, yet the check engine light persists. The gas mileage is poor, and even driving at 55 mph to save fuel, it still costs $70 a week to fill up. Additionally, the windows have trouble rolling up in cold temperatures. Overall, my experience with this Nissan has been unsatisfactory and I will not be purchasing from them again.

  2. Unique Raynor 2024-11-02

The Pathfinder is a great vehicle, although it does have some issues with the oxygen sensors and the instrument cluster. Nissan claims that the instrument cluster is not a defect, but it has not worked properly since the first day.

Overall, this truck is very solid and reliable. Although I would have appreciated a suspension that could withstand more rear weight and higher ground clearance, the power is great for this mid-size truck. However, it is important to note that you also pay for it at the gas pumps. The 4WD system is great, and I have taken it off-roading a few times with no problems. It has been in service to replace the front power window motor, and there were a few issues with sunroof wind noise and misalignment.

Although i like the way they build the car exterior and interior wise, i do not like the way they have so much problems. When i bought the car in 2001 to a total of 42,433 grand, i though i will get a quality vehicle, i was wrong. I bought the state of the line entertainment system, lo jack and a push bar, all have failed me. My BOSE 6 CD changer doesn't work, keeps on getting the error "err2" which means disk stuck, push bar is poor quality and the lo jack doesn't work. I though i would get a good car but this car breaking down every time. replaced the windshield washer motors 8 times and still doesn't work and the step bar is corroded and the transmission is going only at 52343. Do not buy

I purchased the vehicle with 87,000 miles and took all the necessary precautions, including a weekend test drive, private mechanic inspection, and carfax report. Although the car was a 1-owner trade and in exceptional condition, I unfortunately experienced some issues. Over the course of a year, I had to replace the catalytic converters, O2 sensors, mass air flow, tie rod ends, and wheel bearings. Additionally, the CD changer doesn't work, there were bad o-ring oil seals, and the windows move slowly. In hot weather, the car overheats due to an air pocket in the cooling system that even the dealer couldn't clear out. The transmission also slips in cold weather. I had to replace the exhaust resonator, which was the third one for this car. Lastly, the fan amplifier control module burned out and the left side sits a bit low, which leads me to suspect a bad strut.

Positive 2001 Nissan Pathfinder car reviews

If you're considering a Pathfinder, make sure it's a post-2001 model to get the awesome engine. I was used to the performance of my Maxima and had my doubts about the Pathfinder until I drove a 2001 model - WOW! While I would prefer a nicer interior and better placement of the Bose sound speakers, the performance and handling are too good to complain about. I battled between this and the 4Runner for a long time, but I made the right decision - this car is flat out sweet!

When you buy a Pathfinder, you'll feel on top of the world. It feels like a luxury car, but still gives you the height and capacity of an SUV. You won't need it for any heavy-duty work, but you'll be so glad to have it when moving furniture, kids, and friends around. Your friends will be impressed when they get in and say, 'Wow, this is really nice!' Not to mention, the leather seats are beautiful. The only things to keep in mind are that the turn radius is pretty big, making u-turns a bit tough, and the rear door is really heavy. But overall, it's perfect for you!

I purchased this SUV brand new just before the 2002 model came out. The engine is much better than in previous years. I did experience the same CD problems mentioned in other reviews, but after a month of arguing with the dealership, they were able to get Nissan to warranty it. That was about 50K miles ago and I haven't had any problems since. Other than replacing the tires and front brakes once, I haven't had to do anything to this vehicle. Even after being rear-ended at nearly 40 mph two weeks ago, I only experienced minor back pain and no other injuries. Unfortunately, the bumper pushed the frame and I believe it is now totaled, but I understand that it is designed to prevent injuries. Overall, I think this is a great car!

My Nissan Frontier has been a reliable and high-performing vehicle, with a solid track record of success. Despite some minor issues with injector failure, which were quickly resolved by a dealership mechanic, it has consistently delivered excellent results. With over 180k miles on the clock, it still looks and drives like a much newer vehicle, a testament to its quality and durability. While some may criticize Nissan for skimping on interior materials in the past, I believe that the 01 model represents a significant improvement in this area. Overall, I have no complaints about my Frontier, and I would highly recommend it to anyone in need of a dependable and capable vehicle.

I love my Pathfinder, even though it only gets around 14MPG. Living in an area with heavy snowfall from November to February (sometimes even into April), the Pathfinder's hardcore 4WD and weight make driving in six or more inches of snow less difficult and even enjoyable on roads I know well. The interior is spacious and can hold a lot of stuff. The engine runs smoothly and sounds great, providing just enough power for a vehicle of this size. I'm grateful that I didn't opt for the 1999 model with the 3.3 litre engine. However, I have had some issues with the stock stereo and the exhaust falling apart at 79,000 miles (although considering the snow and salt where I live, this is understandable).
