Hyundai Elantra problems

The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).

First generation (J1; 1990)

The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.

It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.

The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Common Hyundai Elantra problems

The Hyundai Elantra has been a popular choice for car buyers looking for an affordable and reliable compact sedan. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its common problems. This article will discuss some of the most frequently reported issues with the Hyundai Elantra, based on complaints from owners.

  • Transmission Issues: One of the most common problems with the Hyundai Elantra is related to its automatic transmission. Faulty speed sensors can lead to incorrect shifting, which affects the car's performance and fuel efficiency. This problem has been reported by hundreds of owners, with an average of 100,677 miles on the affected vehicles.
  • Engine Problems: The Hyundai Elantra has a history of engine problems, with some of the most frequently reported issues being a failed canister purge valve and a faulty crankshaft angle sensor. The failed EVAP component has affected 16 model years between 2000 and 2017, primarily affecting cars with high mileage. The average mileage for this problem is around 115,418. On the other hand, a faulty crankshaft angle sensor can cause stalling or engine failure, affecting 17 model years from 1992 to 1994 and 2000 to 2016. The average mileage for this issue is much lower, at 86,768 miles.
  • Rough Engine Idle: Another common problem with the Hyundai Elantra is a rough engine idle. This issue is likely caused by a failing vapor canister purge valve, which affects the performance of the EVAP emission control system. The valve is challenging to access, so most drivers replace the entire EVAP system instead.
  • Incorrect Gear Changes: Automatic transmission issues can also cause incorrect gear changes in the Hyundai Elantra. This problem is often related to faulty speed sensors in the transmission. Removal of the sensors is relatively easy, and new sensors can be found on parts lists for replacement.
  • Engine Stalling: The Hyundai Elantra's engine can struggle to start, and when it is running, it may stall often. This issue can be caused by various factors, but before sending the car for a diagnostic check, it's recommended to check the crankshaft angle sensor, which is a common wear part on the Elantra. Replacement is a straightforward job, and new sensors can be ordered through BreakerYard.
  • No Audio from Car Speakers: Car speakers may not produce any sound, making it impossible to hear the radio, CD, navigation, or telephone calls. This issue is often caused by a software glitch in the navigation unit. To resolve this, disconnect the car's negative battery terminal and wait for about 15 minutes before reconnecting it. This should reset the navigation unit and restore audio functionality.
  • Weak Headlights: The Elantra's headlights may become dim over time due to film buildup on the lens. This issue can be resolved by removing the headlight lens and using scouring powder and a damp cloth to gently rub the lens, restoring light output.
  • Engine Knocking Noise: A knocking noise coming from the engine is often caused by faulty engine mounts. This issue is most noticeable when accelerating or applying the brakes. To fix this problem, the engine must be removed with an engine hoist to access and replace the broken engine mounts.
  • Window Regulator Failure: The window regulator is prone to failing on the Hyundai Elantra. If the windows are hesitant to move up and down, a replacement window regulator is required. A video tutorial is available to guide the replacement process.
  • Air Conditioning Problems: The Elantra has known issues with its air conditioning system. The blower motor or compressor may be faulty, causing the air conditioning to malfunction in various ways. Depending on the issue, replacement parts may be required to restore proper functionality.
  • Difficulty Steering: The Elantra's front suspension arms may develop rust, causing the car to become harder to steer and potentially pulling to one side. Replacement suspension arms may be necessary to resolve this issue.

In summary, the Hyundai Elantra has several common problems, primarily related to its transmission, engine, and other components. While these issues can be concerning, many of them are relatively straightforward to diagnose and repair. It's essential for Elantra owners to stay informed about these common problems and address them promptly to ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles.

  • Summary: I have been encountering a series of troubling and erratic issues with my vehicle. These problems occur under various driving conditions, including acceleration, steady-state driving, and braking. However, the most prevalent and problematic occurrences seem to transpire during acceleration and braking. During acceleration, I've observed inconsistent behavior. Sometimes, the car shifts smoothly, with minimal torque drop between gears. On other occasions, the vehicle accelerates initially but then abruptly loses all power between gears, resembling the sensation of someone engaging the clutch in a manual vehicle and shifting slowly. This results in a temporary power loss lasting 1-2 seconds, followed by an over-revving and clutch slip, leading to an unintended surge in acceleration. The issues I've encountered during braking typically begin with a chattering noise and vibrations that seem to be an imbalanced or shocked reciprocating mass, I can assume maybe one of the clutches/flywheel . This is often followed by decreased brake pedal linearity, requiring increased brake pedal pressure to stop. This normally results in an unintended aggressive forward jerk just before coming to a stop, akin to someone releasing a clutch on a manual transmission vehicle too quickly when downshifting while the engine speed is too low. One night I went to get diapers for my baby and it was raining and I hit the breaks and the breaks lost control and I crashed into a median wall and my car kept spinning around. Ambulance were called and I was admitted to the hospital with minor injuries.

  • VIN: 5NPD74LF7JH

  • Summary: My car's steering wheel is making a weird rubbing noise after driving for a short time on wet roads. It sounds like rubber is being turned against something (ie not metallic-sounding) This occurs whether I am in park, drive, reverse, and occurs when turning the wheel in any direction. No warning lights turn on. Currently, it only occurs after driving on wet roads (it doesn't actually have to be actively raining; just for the roads to be pretty wet from a recent rain). My mechanic did hear it one time when I was able to drive over immediately after it rained, and said it sounded like it was coming from the area of the MDPS, but, was later unable to duplicate it (the sound usually goes away after sitting for 2-3 hours). I've contacted the dealer because there are numerous TSBs out regarding the steering column; however, they said since they can't duplicate it, they will not repair it under warranty or as a courtesy (the jury is out as to whether it is covered under my drive-train warranty, but, as I said, since it's only a TSB, they won't cover it anyway at this point). I am concerned it will get worse and cause me to lose power steering/cause an accident.

  • VIN: 5NPLL4AG9MH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding a significant safety issue with my vehicle’s backup camera system. The backup camera consistently malfunctions, displaying glitchy images with distorted lines across the screen. This issue renders the camera essentially unusable, as it fails to provide a clear view of the area behind the vehicle, posing a serious safety hazard. This malfunction directly impacts my ability to safely reverse, especially in crowded areas where visibility is crucial. The camera’s unreliability puts pedestrians and other drivers at risk, as I am unable to fully ensure that my path is clear when reversing. I strongly believe this defect poses a significant safety concern that needs to be addressed by the manufacturer. I request that the NHTSA investigate this issue and take appropriate action to ensure that this problem is resolved for myself and the many other affected vehicle owners. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-12
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-20
  • VIN: 5NPDH4AE1CH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: A while ago the airbag light starting coming on intermittently and I originally thought it was the sensor detecting weight in the passenger seat or not and perhaps the sensor was a little off but did not investigate. Over time the light become on constantly but I didn't notice this shift until the horn stopped working recently too. After some troubleshooting of the fuse and relay, an independent shop determined that the clock spring is the issue. After researching online I discovered there is an extended warranty for the clock spring on my vehicle of which I was unaware. I do not recall receiving a letter about this [XXX] ), although the warranty extension was announced years before my vehicle showed signs of an issue. I also saw from other posts that the clock spring is a common issue possibly impacting the reliability of the airbags and horn and dealers have been hesitant to replace the clock spring until the issue reaches a certain degree of severity. Now I wonder if the airbags in my vehicle have not been ready to deploy in case of an accident since the seatbelt light started coming on and driving without a functioning horn adds more risk of an accident. I'm surprised that a recall was not previously issued as both the airbags and horn impact the safety of the vehicle. Apart from the concern of the part reliability itself, the lack of communication around the safety bulletin vs how recalls are communicated seems it could have put many at risk of malfunctioning airbags that would increase the severity of injury in an accident and a malfunctioning horn that would increase the chances of an accident. How is a faulty part that impacts functionality of the airbags and horn not a safety-related defect that merits a recall? • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-29
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-12
  • VIN: KMHDU46D09U
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I previously brought my car in for a recall in 2014 for underbody corrosion and it was repaired; however, now there has been severe corrosion of the underbody, not just the components listed in the recall but nearly the whole underbody is severly rusted and corroded (see pictures below). My mother was driving my car in July 2024 when the rear subframe completely snapped near the control arm while she was driving. Luckily she did not get injured or hurt, but it could have been potentially fatal especially with this happening. I reported this to Hyundai Motor America and towed my car to the dealership. The dealership has submitted a goodwill request to cover the repairs of the recall not the other ones; however, I raised a potential oversight for the previous recall whereby the corrosion of other components not explicitly named in the campaign such as the sway bars and backing plates which could also directly impact the vehicle’s structural integrity and safety if corroded. The omission of ALL of the components that would be subject to corrosion in the recall campaign could have been an oversight and the recall should have covered all critical underbody components prone to corrosion, not just the ones explicitly listed in the recall. Other parts corrosion are a direct consequence of the same environmental factors that led to the corrosion of the subframe and control arms. Since these components are interconnected, and since Hyundai has acknowledged the issue with the crossmember corrosion through the recall, it stands to reason that the other components’ damage should also be addressed as part of the overall remedy. These additional parts would have been exposed to the same environmental factors (e.g., road salt, moisture) that caused the other components to corrode. Since Hyundai acknowledges that these environmental factors led to corrosion in the subframe and control arms, it stands that the other components would also be affected too.

Latest negative Hyundai Elantra car reviews

  1. Ethel Gibson 2025-10-05

    Vehicle year: 2010

The car has some issues with acceleration, which can be dangerous. Additionally, the driver's seat upholstery has a tendency to pucker. I had some difficulty with the dealership, but they eventually repaired the issue. However, it did happen again a week later. The car is also quite loud and you can feel every bump on the road. Despite these issues, I would not recommend this car.

  2. Jaquan Koch 2025-10-02

    Vehicle year: 2012

I had an unfortunate accident with my 2012 Hyundai Elantra, which was part of the safety recall Campaign 137 for the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. I reached out to the Hyundai Recall Campaign Center multiple times, but unfortunately, I had some trouble getting the right information and support. However, National Customer Care Rep Larry Bane managed my case and provided me with a response. Although I requested to have my car tested in post-accident condition, it was not possible due to the repairs already made. Larry Bane's conclusion was that my vehicle operated according to its design in the accident and that the recall did not cause it. Chris, Larry's supervisor, expressed his regret that he could not do more for me, but he assured me that they always strive to provide excellent customer service. I'm here to help you, and I want to ensure that we close any gaps and make the process as smooth as possible for you. Unfortunately, I don't make any of the decisions. When I asked for clarification on Hyundai's conclusion letters, the representative simply said that it was the decision they made. I then spoke with Ethan, a supervisor at the Hyundai Recall Campaign Center, who suggested that the conclusion letters may have been composed by someone who isn't skilled in writing. Ethan concluded that the letters sounded ridiculous. I decided to write a letter to Dave Zuchowski, the CEO of Hyundai Motor America, but he didn't address my customer service experiences or answer why Hyundai didn't want to test my car in post-accident condition. Instead, he said that they continue to believe that their previous response is accurate and that my accident did not involve a product defect. What do you think about Hyundai's decision to refuse my request to test my car with the same yaw-rate sensor and ESC system at the time of the accident as part of the recall? Do you think Hyundai provided me with great customer service? Lastly, do you think my next car should be a Hyundai?

  3. Camren Hahn 2025-09-29

    Vehicle year: 2009

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience when I took my car in to the dealer at only 2600 miles to check an engine noise. Unfortunately, I was told that the engine was bad and needed to be replaced. They ended up using a remanufactured engine short block, which was a bit disappointing. I reached out to Hyundai consumer affairs and spoke with 4 different representatives, but they assured me that this is a routine procedure. I understand that warranties can be tricky, but it's a shame that they used used parts in my brand new car. Thanks for listening!

  4. Wendell Kuvalis 2025-09-26

    Vehicle year: 2006

It's great to hear that you took such good care of your car! It's unfortunate that you're experiencing some issues now that the warranty has expired. Have you considered taking it to a trusted mechanic to see if they can help with the transmission issue? It's always frustrating when things like this happen, but I'm sure there's a solution out there. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help!

  5. Oren Bayer 2025-09-26

    Vehicle year: 2012

The suspension engineering and steering of this car are subpar. In my experience owning this car for 2 years, I had to replace both rear shocks and the dealer was unable to properly fix the steering. Based on my observations, I believe this to be an engineering flaw. The front suspension also exhibited thumping. Overall, this car has been one of the worst we have owned.

  1. Gregory Ryan 2025-10-08

    Vehicle year: 2018

Don't worry about the price, you're getting great value for your money! Plus, the warranty is the best ever.

  2. Jorge Haley 2025-10-08

    Vehicle year: 2016

Great car! I'm a proud owner of my 4th Hyundai (2nd Elantra) and I've been satisfied with each one. The acceleration is decent and the front seat area is really nice. Although the center console on the 2016 could be slightly larger like the one on the 2013. The back seat area is a little small for bigger adults but perfect for kids. The Value Edition has amazing features and the trunk is a good size for this type of car. The warranty is top-notch and I highly recommend Columbia Hyundai in Cincinnati, they are the best dealership I've ever dealt with.

  3. Jonas Abshire 2025-10-08

    Vehicle year: 2009

Hi there! I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your GL model (Canada)! It sounds like you made a great choice based on all the positive expert and owner reviews you read. I'm especially happy to hear that the interior room is spacious and comfortable for you, even with your height and weight. The dashboard layout also sounds very convenient and well thought out. It's great to hear that you're finding the car fun to drive overall. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

  4. Manuel Hand 2025-10-05

    Vehicle year: 2015

I really like this car! I was initially considering the 2014 model, but when I saw the 2015 Elantra SE, I knew it was the one for me. I had previously owned a 2009 Hyundai Elantra GLS, which I also loved, so it was an easy decision to stick with the Elantra. Although there isn't much difference between the 2014 and 2015 models, the car I purchased came with a package that included Bluetooth, a touch screen, a rear view camera, and 16-inch alloy wheels, which are all fantastic features to have. The car cost around 20k. If you're interested in a newer Elantra, the 2014 model is cheaper and pretty much the same, except for the extra package options, of course. The car has great acceleration, awesome updated features, a spacious back seat, and a roomy trunk.

  5. Derek Huel 2025-10-04

    Vehicle year: 1995

The car I owned for 10 years required absolutely no repairs during that time, with the only costs being fuel and basic maintenance.
