2012 Hyundai Elantra problems

The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).

First generation (J1; 1990)

The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.

It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.

The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Common 2012 Hyundai Elantra problems

The Hyundai Elantra 2012 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine and transmission.

One of the most common problems is a ticking noise in the engine, which has been reported by many owners. This issue can be caused by various factors, such as a faulty fuel injector or a problem with the engine's timing. In some cases, the ticking noise can be a sign of a more serious issue, such as engine failure, which can be costly to repair.

Another common problem with the Hyundai Elantra 2012 is related to the transmission. Faulty speed sensors can lead to incorrect shifting in automatic transmissions, which can result in a jerky or unresponsive driving experience. This issue has been reported by over 300 owners, with an average mileage of 100,677 miles. However, the sensors are relatively inexpensive and straightforward to replace, making the repair less costly than other transmission issues.

The 2012 model has also been reported to have problems with the canister purge valve, which can cause the check engine light to come on. This issue has been reported by 117 owners, with an average mileage of 115,418 miles. The failed EVAP component has affected 16 model years between 2000 and 2017, including the 2012 model.

In addition to these problems, some Elantras might experience stalling or engine failure resulting from a faulty crankshaft angle sensor. This issue affects 17 model years, including the 2012 model, and has an average mileage of just 86,768 miles.

Overall, while the Hyundai Elantra 2012 has had some reported problems, it is still considered a reliable car in its segment. RepairPal gives the Elantra a 4.5 out of 5.0 in terms of reliability, ranking it eighth out of 36 compact cars. The average annual repair cost is about $452, which is excellent for the industry average. However, it is essential to note that the most commonly reported problems with the Elantra are engine or transmission-related, so potential buyers should be aware of these issues.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-12
  • VIN: 5NPDH4AE1CH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: A while ago the airbag light starting coming on intermittently and I originally thought it was the sensor detecting weight in the passenger seat or not and perhaps the sensor was a little off but did not investigate. Over time the light become on constantly but I didn't notice this shift until the horn stopped working recently too. After some troubleshooting of the fuse and relay, an independent shop determined that the clock spring is the issue. After researching online I discovered there is an extended warranty for the clock spring on my vehicle of which I was unaware. I do not recall receiving a letter about this [XXX] ), although the warranty extension was announced years before my vehicle showed signs of an issue. I also saw from other posts that the clock spring is a common issue possibly impacting the reliability of the airbags and horn and dealers have been hesitant to replace the clock spring until the issue reaches a certain degree of severity. Now I wonder if the airbags in my vehicle have not been ready to deploy in case of an accident since the seatbelt light started coming on and driving without a functioning horn adds more risk of an accident. I'm surprised that a recall was not previously issued as both the airbags and horn impact the safety of the vehicle. Apart from the concern of the part reliability itself, the lack of communication around the safety bulletin vs how recalls are communicated seems it could have put many at risk of malfunctioning airbags that would increase the severity of injury in an accident and a malfunctioning horn that would increase the chances of an accident. How is a faulty part that impacts functionality of the airbags and horn not a safety-related defect that merits a recall? • Summary: I was driving my 2012 Hyundai Elantra and it suddenly stopped. I took it to be checked out and it has an excessive oil consumption issue which can cause engine failure or a fire. Hyundai refuses to acknowledge the issue or fix it. After doing some research I see that this is a common problem with this car. I have to check my oil every 1000 miles and many times less than that and refill it. They should be held responsible and fix the issue. There should also have been a recall considering not only how dangerous this is, but also how many people are experiencing this.

The car was transported to a Hyundai dealership for diagnosis. The dealer service department reported they could not find any issues with the braking system. The brakes apparently worked once the vehicle arrived at the dealership. Due this issue suddenly occurring without warning and a braking system recall already in effect for this vehicle, we no longer felt safe driving the vehicle and purchased a new vehicle.

Negative 2012 Hyundai Elantra car reviews

  1. Bernardo Gutkowski 2024-11-14

This is an update from a review I wrote 6 months ago. We now have 12000 miles on our Elantra and the gas mileage has only improved about 1 mpg, from 22/32 to 23/33. I'm disappointed with this, but I'm hopeful that it will continue to improve. We took it into the dealer to try to improve the mileage, but they couldn't find anything wrong. The mileage indicator also doesn't seem to be accurate. When I check it with actual miles per tank and divide the gallons put in, it is about 2 mpg off. We've had some trouble with the car on ice, and we're not sure if it's the car or the tires they put on it in the factory, but the dealership said they are all-season. We don't feel completely safe with the kids in this car when the weather is bad, but we're taking precautions. Overall, we're not completely happy with the money we spent, but we're hopeful that things will improve.

  2. Haleigh Prosacco 2024-10-01

I purchased my 2012 Hyundai Elantra almost 2 years ago, but unfortunately, I have been experiencing a vibration while idle for over 6 months. Despite bringing it in for service multiple times, the issue has not been resolved. I recently spoke with the service manager, who test drove my car and stated that the vibration is normal. However, I am still concerned as my car shakes quite noticeably. With my warranty almost up at 30,000 miles, I am feeling frustrated and disappointed. While I cannot recommend this car based on my experience, I do appreciate the warranties provided by Hyundai.

  3. Johnpaul Medhurst 2024-07-14

I recently traded my BMW 1 series for this car and initially thought I loved it. However, I soon realized that my excitement for a new car had clouded my judgement. I want to share some of my experiences with this car to help others make an informed decision. Firstly, the leather seats are not actually leather, but rather a plastic material with some leather accents. Unfortunately, they melted under an unknown liquid and the company and dealer confirmed this. Secondly, the steering wheel gradually falls apart over time, leaving black rubber residue on your hands and chunks falling off. Thirdly, the Nav system is upgradable, but the dealership will not do it due to the risk of bricking the computer. Fourthly, after 7 years, the car rattles everywhere, including the doors, trunk, and seats. Fifthly, the paint is delicate and normal road debris can cause rust spots within 3 years. Sixthly, the MPG miscalculation that Hyundai was guilty of is worse than advertised with this model. Seventhly, it is best to avoid driving in ECO mode as it creates excess carbon in the engine, leading to stumbling and poor performance. Lastly, if you get the limited version, be warned that the low profile tires are prone to cupping. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision. Thank you for considering my experience.

  4. Bartholome Schultz 2024-06-22

The reviews are disappointing. Despite being only 3 years old, the vehicle requires work on the fuel ejector and a new axle. This is unacceptable.

  5. Wilburn Luettgen 2024-05-14

Although it started off well, the car's exterior seals began to leak, allowing moisture and water to seep in. Additionally, the paint began to fade after only 2 years. Perhaps the manufacturer could benefit from adopting Toyota's paint manufacturing process. Unfortunately, at 40000+ miles, the engine began to burn oil, and at 55000 miles, it suffered a catastrophic terminal engine failure, including a blown exhaust manifold. As a result of this experience, I have decided not to purchase a car from Korea again.

Positive 2012 Hyundai Elantra car reviews

The dealer called us up and said they had one in stock that we could take a look at. Back in 2012, they couldn't keep them in stock. We are so glad that we ended up buying it because it's been a great car with no major problems. After about 28,000 miles, we did have to put on a set of tires, but that's to be expected. It's really fun to drive and the visibility and headlights are pretty good. While it's okay in the snow, it's a lot better with all-weather tires. We have a sunroof which came with the deal, but we seldom use it. Our grandkids think it has a great design, which is really cool! The only thing we would change is the low profile tires. They look great, but we would just as soon have regular tires. That's not a big deal though. It gets about 30 miles per gallon, which is a little less than Hyundai predicted, but it's fine with us. We are really pleased with this car. Update 5 years later: We still have this car and it's working really well. We had to put in a new battery and have the brakes redone, but that's to be expected after five years of driving. Our only dislikes are the low profile tires. There's one nitpicking dislike and that's the ease of fastening the seat belt if you're a larger size person and wearing bulky clothes in the winter. The snap-in is too close to the seat. We will definitely consider buying another Elantra when the time comes.

We purchased our 2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited in the spring of 2012 and have driven it for 78,400 miles. As senior citizens, we were not looking for a high-performance car, and the Elantra has met our needs perfectly. We have never driven it out of 'Eco' mode, and the performance is more than adequate for our standards. On our frequent highway trips, we get an impressive 35 to 40 mpg, and the car seems to love tailwinds. We had one issue with the steering wheel peeling, but the dealer promptly replaced it under warranty, and we have not had any further problems. The service department at the dealership has been excellent, suggesting preventive maintenance without being pushy. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the dealer offered the best price on tires, with a wide range of brands available. We chose the Limited model for its beautiful tan leather interior, and while we would have preferred 16-inch wheels with higher profile tires for more replacement options, we are overall extremely satisfied with the Elantra. It is one of the best cars we have ever owned.

I bought the 2012 Elantra GLS with the preferred package last night and it has exceeded my expectations. Although I initially wanted the Limited with a sunroof, my budget didn't allow for it. However, I'm still considering adding a sunroof later or trading it in for a newer model in a few years. The Elantra has a surprising amount of power despite its 148 hp and 131 torque. I was able to achieve an impressive 42 mpg in just one day, even with my lead foot. The beige interior is stunning and the red allure exterior is shiny and crisp. The Elantra GLS boasts impressive technology and safety features that outshine most other compact cars, with the exception of the Cruze and Focus.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2012 Elantra. I've put 12000 miles on it since last November, taking trips from Florida to New York and from Florida to Mexico, and I have to say, it's been a great ride! The car has been super reliable and fuel efficient, with an average of 39 mpg (mostly highway). The only time I noticed a drop in gas mileage was when I had a full car with 3 people, a dog, and luggage on the way to New York and Mexico, but even then it only dropped by about 3-4 mpg. I personally love the look of the car, both inside and out. I'm not sure what other reviewers are talking about when they mention engine noise, because at 70mph cruising, I can barely hear it! Thanks for listening to my experience.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share that I bought this car back in 2011 and have been keeping up with routine maintenance such as brakes, tires, and fluids. I have noticed that the paint has started to chip a bit, but I think that's pretty normal for a car with over 100k miles of highway driving. How has your experience been with car maintenance?
