2017 Hyundai Elantra problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most prevalent issues is transmission-related, with 304 owners reporting problems with the transmission not shifting or a check engine light (CEL) due to failed speed sensors in the transmission. This issue can make the car difficult to drive and may require a replacement of the speed sensors or even the transmission itself.
Another significant problem reported by owners is engine failure. In one instance, a 2017 Elantra with 109,000 miles suffered a blown engine while driving, requiring a tow to a Hyundai dealership for inspection and potential assistance with repairs or replacement. This issue is not part of any recall, and it is unclear how widespread it is.
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra has also been reported to have issues with power loss, which is not specified in detail in the search results. However, it is mentioned that the 2017 Hyundai Elantra's problems include issues with power loss, along with chipping paint.

. Variable improper connecting problems are often the leading cause of electrical system issues, and it is recommended to have the vehicle checked for any wiring issues to see if any faulty wires need replacement.
The brakes are another area where the 2017 Hyundai Elantra has been reported to have problems. Some owners have reported issues with the master cylinder, brake pads, brake lights, and brake booster, which can reduce the Elantra's braking power and increase the distance required for the car to come to a stop, potentially leading to accidents if the driver fails to apply the brakes on time
Finally, the 2017 Hyundai Elantra has also been reported to have airbag issues, which can be a dangerous combination with brake problems. Some owners have reported that the airbag light came on, but the airbags failed to deploy in a crash, while other common airbag problems include inflator issues and sensor breakdowns
In summary, the 2017 Hyundai Elantra has been reported to have several common problems, including transmission issues, engine failure, power loss, electrical system problems, brake issues, and airbag problems. It is essential to have any issues checked and addressed promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

We have been without our vehicle for over a month and with the trending problems with these engines we shouldnt have to come out of pocket to fix it. What a great car! It's amazing how much cars have changed since the 70s and 80s. Back then, small cars had very few options, and air conditioning was considered a luxury. My first new car was a 1979 Toyota Celica, and it was a fantastic car. It had a little 22 r 4-cylinder engine, a 5-speed stick shift, and the dealer added air conditioning. The horsepower rating was only 91, and it had manual steering, but I loved it! I drove it everywhere, including three trips from Southern California to the East Coast. It handled mountain roads with ease. Fast forward to 2016, and people complain about a compact car with only 147 horsepower. Really? This car has all the options anyone could want, and it's a joy to drive. Some reviewers complain about a little wind noise and road noise, but it's a moving car, after all. And some say it only rides okay at 55 mph, but it drives just fine at 80-85 mph all day long! I've taken it on trips to Vegas and back, and it's been great. In my opinion, this car is awesome. It's well-equipped, comfortable, and competent. It's an economy car that's light years ahead of its predecessors. Not one thing that man ever built is perfect, but I highly recommend this car. Just buy it, enjoy it, take care of it, and it should serve you well for many years. Update: I now have 23,000 miles on the car, and it's been absolutely trouble-free. I'm very pleased and satisfied with it. It's comfortable, spacious, and I'm getting 29-30 mpg in the city and 38-39 mpg on the highway at 80 mph. Highly recommended!

I recently traded in my 2011 Kia Optima, which had 97,000 miles on it and had never given me any problems. All I ever did was fill it with gas, change the oil every 5,000 miles, and buy one new set of tires. One night, I test drove a Civic EX and an Elantra SE with popular and tech packages. While the Civic was nice and the dealer was easy to work with, it just didn't feel comfortable to me. I couldn't find a comfortable position. Although it was a great car and the CVT wasn't bad, I was disappointed that it didn't have XM. There were no incentives on the Civic, and the dealer could only discount so much when they were selling like hotcakes. So, I went back to Hyundai to test drive a Limited with no extra packages, and I knew I had found my next car. It has everything I need and want, and nothing I don't. The ride is incredibly smooth and quiet, and the six-speed transmission is really nice. Some say the power is lacking, but I think what they mean is that the Mazda 3 has more power. This is a compact car, and the power is more than adequate. I ended up getting around $3,800 off the sticker price, plus 0.9% financing for 60 months. I felt this was a really good deal. This car isn't selling well, so the dealer has to be aggressive. I highly recommend test driving this vehicle before buying another.

The acceleration with the turbo can be a bit jerky and cuts out, which can be quite annoying, especially when it happens around 2000-3000rpm. According to forums, this is due to the way the car is tuned from the factory, causing the wastegate dump to open and close too frequently, resulting in the acceleration feeling like it drops out for a split second many times in a row. On the bright side, the exterior of the car looks great and the interior is awesome. The seats are comfy, the dash layout is great, and the dual AC works perfectly. The ergonomics of everything fit well, and the look and feel of the interior is very Audi-esque, which I really like. Although the passenger side door handle seems a little loose, I've only had the car for a month and a half and I'm overall satisfied. However, I would appreciate it if the acceleration issues could be fixed. Unfortunately, the entertainment system crashed and rebooted itself last night, but hopefully, that won't become a regular thing.

I went looking for a used car and found an even better deal with a new Hyundai. Their warranty was so comprehensive that I didn't need to purchase an extended warranty.

I've been driving my Elantra for over a year now (purchased on 06/30), and I have to say that Hyundai has really stepped up their game. I remember when they were considered disposable products alongside KIA. While it's not a sports car, the steering is light, which took some getting used to. The Drive Mode, including the 'Sport' option, is a bit of a joke. It's probably best suited for those who haven't driven cars with better handling and assume that this is what 'Sport' is like. I tried it once, and it felt like I had four flat tires. However, the car has nice creature comforts and the SE with the Popular Equipment Package is all you need. It's probably the best bang for your buck, and I purchased it as a CPO for around $13K. Looking at the spec sheet, it's clear that it's a reliable vehicle with a naturally aspirated 2.0L 4-cylinder (Multiport Fuel Injection, no carbon deposits on the intake valves) coupled with a 6-speed automatic (none of that CVT or DCT nonsense). However, I did have an incident with a Cylinder 3 Misfire, which was taken care of under warranty. Another issue, unrelated to the mechanics, was the paint. It started chipping on the hood, but fortunately, I got a touch-up paint pen from the dealer, free of charge, and it was fixed. Don't let these minor issues deter you from considering this vehicle or other Hyundai products. In fact, my mother is looking to replace her '09 Murano with a new Kona. Overall, I'm extremely happy with everything this car has to offer, and I'm sure you will be too. Oh, and did I mention that it was assembled in Alabama? Very nice!

The car looks sharp and consistently returns 30-40 mpg, which is great. Although I have had to use the warranty several times, it has been a lifesaver. Unfortunately, every one of the door locks stopped working at different times, requiring eight separate trips to the dealer. Things got so bad with the rear doors that they actually had to cut the interior door panels off to get the doors open. Without the warranty, this would have been a huge repair cost. Next, the heater was initially horrible, but after a computer update last fall, it magically fixed the heater. The ignition coils in this car also had to be replaced before 50k. I’m nearing the end of the bumper to bumper warranty and have zero intentions of keeping the car when the warranty expires. If you are looking at one of these cars, I would definitely do your research. The problems I experienced are quite common. An update a year after the original review, the car now has 77k miles. Hyundai has extended the warranty for the door latches, which is great. However, my passenger rear door does not open from the inside or outside, and my air conditioner has a leak inside the dash, so the vehicle is without air conditioning. I do not drive hard, nor fast, and I am a stickler for vehicle maintenance. Although I am not happy with how the vehicle has lasted, I cannot recommend anyone purchasing one that does not come with a warranty. It still gets great gas mileage, but unfortunately due to the current state of the vehicle market, I am still driving it. Recently, at 83k miles, the ignition coils started to fail again. The dealership had trouble opening the rear door that was stuck and Hyundai refused to pay for the interior door panel to be ripped apart and replaced. I received a notice from my insurance company that my premium was increasing due to recent thefts. I scheduled the car for the theft recall, but unfortunately, a few days before I was to bring the car in, some individuals broke into the vehicle and stole it, eventually launching it off a bridge. I guess that was one way to solve this nightmare. In my experience, I have decided to not purchase a Korean car again. However, I wish good luck to anyone that buys these cars used. Expect to fix some things that don't normally break, or have some teenagers attempt to steal the car from videos they saw on TikTok.

I've been driving this car for more than four years now, and unfortunately, it has been quite unreliable. It seems like there's always something that needs fixing. I'm not a big fan of it, to be honest. In fact, I've even considered leaving the doors unlocked, hoping that someone would take it off my hands.

The paint on my 17 Elantra began to peel within a year of purchase, and now more panels are peeling at less than two years old. Despite the issue arising well before the 36,000-mile mark, Hyundai has refused to repair the defect. To ensure the vehicle would not continue to peel, I was forced to have the entire car stripped down to bare metal and repainted due to a flaw at the factory during the original painting process. It is disappointing that Hyundai did not prioritize customer service in this situation. I cannot recommend purchasing a Hyundai product and will not be purchasing one myself in the future.

If you live in the Midwest, you may want to be aware of an issue with the heater in the Hyundai Elantra. Unfortunately, even after idling for 45 minutes, it may not clear the windows off, and the defrost and floor heat may not work properly. While Hyundai is aware of this issue, they have not yet fixed it and have instead suggested running the heat on low or second to low and using the seat warmer. While this may not be ideal, it is a temporary solution that may help. If you are considering purchasing a Hyundai Elantra, it may be best to keep in mind that this issue may occur in colder climates. We understand that this may be frustrating, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any further questions or concerns.
