2017 Hyundai Elantra problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Some owners have reported that the airbag light came on, but the airbags failed to deploy in a crash, while other common airbag problems include inflator issues and sensor breakdowns

We have been without our vehicle for over a month and with the trending problems with these engines we shouldnt have to come out of pocket to fix it. The SE trim is impressively well-equipped, especially if you add the tech package. The infotainment system is the best I've seen in an economy car, or even in any luxury car that was made in 2013 or earlier. The large, full-color display is prominent and seamless, with Pandora integration using Bluetooth or Android Auto. The display also offers full phone navigation, which is great, although it may be buggy depending on the phone. The cloth seats in the 2017 models have come a long way, even in the last few years. Usually, cloth seats look cheap and out of place, but in this case, they look durable and well-suited to the clean new look of the car. The patterns are tasteful and sharp, while the added leather center console and wheel on the upgraded SE make the overall interior feel rich for such a budget car. The base sound system is also surprisingly punchy. My wife's 2013 Sonata standard system doesn't have nearly as much body or as clear highs. The sound may not touch a premium set of speakers, but having turned down the limited trim with its upgradable speakers, I have to say I am plenty happy with the base system. It seems like they must be pushing more wattage than older base head units because it gets loud enough to make your ears ring with only minor distortion. It reminds me of the difference of adding aftermarket speakers and a custom head unit without an amplifier. So, it's better than expected. This car drives a lot more like my 2013 Sonata with better electronic steering than what I used to consider a compact car. I really love the new feel of the steering and also the very quiet ride compared to older models. I feel like the car has plenty of power, especially in sport mode. I have no doubt a Civic, especially an Si, would destroy it, but my car only cost 18k after tax and tag and both base packages with the base trim. Honda doesn't offer any breaks to compete with that price. Although I will say the car can cruise at 80 to 90 and still feel smooth and ready to go.Sport mode gives you enough passing power to feel confident in normal city driving, so you don't feel like a punching bag. The car also feels very solid on high-speed banks. Overall, this is the most refined budget compact car I have ever driven. I also find the new Civic extremely appealing, but the price on the Hyundai is infinitely better with all their incentives.

I completed just under 1000 miles in my new 2017 Elantra Sport manual transmission and I absolutely love it! My prior car was a 2013 Sonata 2.0T and I was a bit concerned moving into the Elantra Sport for several reasons. However, my concerns were unfounded. The Elantra Sport has plenty of room, especially in the front seats. The leather bucket seats have excellent support and are quite comfortable (I am six foot and 215lbs). The acceleration in the Elantra Sport is well above average and I certainly haven't been in any situation where the car was underpowered. Finally, I am getting about 31 mpg in a mostly suburban driving environment - much better than I was expecting and a significant improvement over the Sonata. I highly recommend this car!

I was originally interested in a Toyota Prius due to its mileage, but unfortunately it was out of my price range. After researching and test driving several other cars, including the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Nissan Sentra (I didn't consider KIA due to their styling), I ultimately decided on a 2017 Hyundai Elantra Limited. The car's styling, mileage ratings, smooth ride, and comfortable leather interior were the deciding factors. The interior setup is also very convenient, with all controls within easy reach. On a recent 265-mile round trip, the ride was smooth and the mileage was impressive, averaging 44.5 MPG on the way there and a combined average of 42.3 MPG for the whole trip. I have consistently achieved these numbers on my daily commute of 30 miles each way, with 24 miles on the freeway and 6 miles in the city. The dealership offered a great price and was willing to negotiate substantially, which was a pleasant surprise since they were mainly focused on selling their 2016 stock. The salesman, Woody from Streetsboro, Ohio, was fantastic and I would definitely buy from him again. Overall, I am thrilled with my purchase and look forward to driving my Hyundai Elantra to work every day!

I leased this car 7 months ago and I absolutely love it! It's a great value for the price. I have the SE, so it doesn't come with all of the bells and whistles (i.e. bluetooth, back up camera, etc.), but that doesn't matter at all. Both the front and back are extremely spacious, and I can tell you that both the front and back seats are incredibly comfortable. All of the controls and devices are within reach, and the lighting (both naturally and artificially) in the car is sufficient. The stereo system is crisp, clear, and easy to navigate. As far as performance goes, this car does surprisingly well. The engine is powerful yet soft--it isn't noisy from the outside nor the inside, which helps with hearing the radio, fellow passengers, and emergency vehicles. Steering is sharp and takes little effort, and the turning radius is above average. The car handles bumps very well, and the braking system is superb. As far as acceleration, the '17 Elantra SE starts out normally but quickly picks up speed as you move into second gear in regular mode (my SE is an automatic). In addition to regular, the SE also has an eco mode (for saving gas) and a sport mode (especially useful for 0-60 highway merges), which, again, plays into the great value-great price mantra. The outside lighting is perfect--the headlights provide great visibility and the taillights are both easy to see and are really sporty looking (look up some pictures). I recently drove my Elantra SE in the snow, and I must say that this may have been the thing that impressed me the most. The car cuts through the snow like a knife; the tire grip is better than some snow-ready SUV's I've driven. Obviously, it's not going to cut through 6+ inches of snow, but for accumulations less than this, blow-over snow, ice patches, and small snow/ice piles, the Elantra SE passes with flying colors in my book. There are only two It's great to hear that you're interested in the '17 Elantra! While it sits low to the ground, which may make it a bit challenging to get into for taller individuals, it's still a comfortable and safe option. Additionally, it may be a bit more susceptible to wind on the road, but it's still easy to control. Overall, the '17 Elantra is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a compact car with great value, comfort, and safety. We highly recommend considering it!
-
The Elantra is a fantastic choice for those looking for a car with great features at an affordable price. We were able to purchase ours for 19k out the door, which was a great deal. The infotainment system is easy to use and adds to the overall sleek styling of the car. The 6-speed auto transmission shifts smoothly and efficiently, providing an impressive 40 MPGs on the highway. While there is some wind noise, the ride is comfortable and spacious, especially in the back compared to the Corollas. Overall, the Elantra is an excellent option for families in need of a reliable and affordable sedan.

I used to drive a 2014 Mazda 3i Touring 6-Speed before my Elantra Sport DCT, which was a great car to drive. Although it didn't have many features, it always put a smile on my face. Unfortunately, it was totalled in early 2017, so I had to find another vehicle. Having worked for Hyundai for 5 years, I had heard about the Elantra Sport and immediately went searching for it. I found my Electric Blue 2017 Sport Pkg 1 (no Premium Pkg) and although I wanted the manual transmission, my dealer(s) said they didn't have any. However, I later found out that they had 5 in stock that had been there for days. Despite this initial disappointment, I still enjoyed the car. Within the first few hundred miles, the Dual Clutch automatic transmission started jerking and kicking a bit, but I figured it was just the transmission breaking in. However, it progressively got worse, so I put the car into service. Unfortunately, the service experience was not great and I was told that there was nothing wrong with the car. After a call to Hyundai USA, my car was put into another dealer's service shop, where I was told the transmission needed a reflash. Although this seemed to work for about a month, the issue returned, but it was more intermittent than before. I continued to drive the car until my next oil change, where the tech said nothing was wrong. However, I was left unsure if my car was broken or if this really was the transmission's normal behavior. In January 2019, I started experiencing issues with my car and unfortunately, I have had to take it to the shop 8 times. Despite my constant complaints, Hyundai has not taken any action to repurchase the car. Apparently, the technicians were not documenting the service work properly, which made it difficult for Hyundai to identify the issues. Even after 32300 miles, the car still has stalling, sputtering, and overall poor performance. Additionally, the car lacks a power seat which has been causing discomfort to my back. I have also experienced issues with the touch screen radio and back up camera. The factory Hankook tires are also quite noisy and uncomfortable. I am currently paying $500 a month for a leased car that has depreciated significantly and I am not happy with it. I have decided to switch to a 2018/2019 Toyota Camry SE/XSE, which I had the pleasure of test driving and loved. Although I have had two Hyundai products in the past, I am disappointed with the current situation and have decided not to purchase another Hyundai product again.

If you're a tall person, you might want to consider other options instead of the Elantra. The car may not be the most comfortable for taller individuals. Additionally, there were some issues with the car suddenly dying in the driveway after two months of ownership, but the problem was fixed after a few days in the shop. On the positive side, the Elantra has some great features like the blind-spot monitoring system and infotainment system. The gas mileage is also consistently above the EPA's listed numbers. The car can comfortably fit four adults, although taller individuals may find it a bit cramped. The Elantra ECO has enough power to handle Utah mountain passes even when fully loaded. As for maintenance, there were some issues scheduling appointments after the dealership was bought out, but the technician was very helpful when setting up the appointment. The tires are about to be replaced at under 40,000 miles. The AC on the driver's side control is not working properly and defaults to auto defrost mode, unless the temperature is set to 'Lo'. However, the passenger climate control is not affected. On the bright side, the gas mileage continues to be above average for highway driving situations. Two months ago, my right rear passenger window blew out for no known reason while driving down the Interstate. Despite these issues, the vehicle does have good torque and power going over mountain passes. Overall, my experience with the vehicle has been mixed. While it still hesitates at lower speeds, it is not as frequent as before, which is a positive sign.

The car looks sharp and consistently returns 30-40 mpg, which is great. Although I have had to use the warranty several times, it has been a lifesaver. Unfortunately, every one of the door locks stopped working at different times, requiring eight separate trips to the dealer. Things got so bad with the rear doors that they actually had to cut the interior door panels off to get the doors open. Without the warranty, this would have been a huge repair cost. Next, the heater was initially horrible, but after a computer update last fall, it magically fixed the heater. The ignition coils in this car also had to be replaced before 50k. I’m nearing the end of the bumper to bumper warranty and have zero intentions of keeping the car when the warranty expires. If you are looking at one of these cars, I would definitely do your research. The problems I experienced are quite common. An update a year after the original review, the car now has 77k miles. Hyundai has extended the warranty for the door latches, which is great. However, my passenger rear door does not open from the inside or outside, and my air conditioner has a leak inside the dash, so the vehicle is without air conditioning. I do not drive hard, nor fast, and I am a stickler for vehicle maintenance. Although I am not happy with how the vehicle has lasted, I cannot recommend anyone purchasing one that does not come with a warranty. It still gets great gas mileage, but unfortunately due to the current state of the vehicle market, I am still driving it. Recently, at 83k miles, the ignition coils started to fail again. The dealership had trouble opening the rear door that was stuck and Hyundai refused to pay for the interior door panel to be ripped apart and replaced. I received a notice from my insurance company that my premium was increasing due to recent thefts. I scheduled the car for the theft recall, but unfortunately, a few days before I was to bring the car in, some individuals broke into the vehicle and stole it, eventually launching it off a bridge. I guess that was one way to solve this nightmare. In my experience, I have decided to not purchase a Korean car again. However, I wish good luck to anyone that buys these cars used. Expect to fix some things that don't normally break, or have some teenagers attempt to steal the car from videos they saw on TikTok.

I've been driving this car for more than four years now, and unfortunately, it has been quite unreliable. It seems like there's always something that needs fixing. I'm not a big fan of it, to be honest. In fact, I've even considered leaving the doors unlocked, hoping that someone would take it off my hands.

The paint on my 17 Elantra began to peel within a year of purchase, and now more panels are peeling at less than two years old. Despite the issue arising well before the 36,000-mile mark, Hyundai has refused to repair the defect. To ensure the vehicle would not continue to peel, I was forced to have the entire car stripped down to bare metal and repainted due to a flaw at the factory during the original painting process. It is disappointing that Hyundai did not prioritize customer service in this situation. I cannot recommend purchasing a Hyundai product and will not be purchasing one myself in the future.
