1999 Hyundai Elantra problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Common 1999 Hyundai Elantra problems
The Hyundai Elantra, produced since 1990, has generally been considered a reliable vehicle. However, specific issues have been reported by owners, particularly in certain model years. This article will focus on the 1999 Hyundai Elantra and its common problems.
- Airbag-related problems: The 1999 Hyundai Elantra has experienced airbag system faults, which can be a serious safety concern. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) light may indicate a malfunction due to bad wiring or a more severe issue related to the airbag control module. In some cases, airbags may not inflate on time, or they may inflate in situations where they shouldn't, increasing the risk of injury.
- Steering assist system malfunction: The 1999 Hyundai Elantra's steering assist system relies on the electronic power steering connector. While this issue is more prevalent in later models, it's worth noting that any malfunction in the steering system can make it difficult for the driver to turn the steering wheel, potentially leading to accidents or difficulty controlling the vehicle.
- Fuel delivery system fault: Premature fuel pump wear has been reported in the 1999 Hyundai Elantra, particularly in vehicles equipped with the 2.0-liter Beta engine. This issue can cause engine misfires, difficulties starting the car, and even engine seizing while driving. A faulty fuel pump relay or inadequate fuel pump pressure can lead to these problems, affecting the combustion cycle and the overall performance of the vehicle.
- Electronic stability control issues: The electronic stability control system, or ESC, is crucial for maintaining vehicle stability and control. While the 1999 Hyundai Elantra may not have the same level of electronic systems as newer models, it's still important to ensure that the ESC is functioning properly to avoid potential safety issues.
When considering purchasing a used 1999 Hyundai Elantra, it's essential to thoroughly inspect the vehicle for these common problems and address any issues before making a final decision. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or mitigate these problems, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable driving experience.
What is the most common problem with the Hyundai Elantra?
A prevalent problem that the Hyundai Elantra's have is a subpar starter. A few signs of a bad starter are noises, smoke, and if the car won't start. Noises such as clicking, grinding, or a high-pitched sound can indicate that the starter is bad.
Are older Hyundai Elantras reliable?
Q: Which Hyundai Elantra model years should I avoid when shopping for a used car? A: If you're in the market for a used Hyundai Elantra, avoid the following model years due to reliability issues: 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2017.
Which year is best for Elantra?
We'd rate the 2007-2009 Elantra's, along with the 2015 and 2016 Elantra's in the middle range. They perform well, but not best. Not that you'll find them here, but the newer models, from 2019 onward have been rated highly, and so far haven't earned a lot of complaints.
Is Elantra good or bad?
If the car isn't ideal, there is little point in investing in it. The Hyundai Elantra boasts excellent reliability on the market. According to withclutch.com, the Elantra scores 69.25, which makes it a very reliable option. It's one of the highest-scoring Hyundais, making an excellent name for the brand.

1999 Hyundai Elantra recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 1999 Hyundai Elantra.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SOME SONATA VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.5 LITER V-6 ENGINES AND ALL ELANTRA MODEL VEHICLES MAY HAVE EXPERIENCED INTERMITTENT LOW-SPEED ENGINE STALLING, WHICH COULD OCCUR IF THE MAF (MASS AIR FLOW) SENSOR ELECTRICAL SIGNAL IS INTERRUPTED AS A RESULT OF ENGINE VIBRATION TRANSMITTED TO THE MAF SENSOR CONNECTOR WIRING HARNESS.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL RE-ROUTE THE MAF SENSOR CONNECTOR WIRING HARNESS.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE SEALS DO NOT REMAIN SUFFICIENTLY ELASTIC, RESULTING IN TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKAGE. THIS LEAKAGE CAN RESULT IN REDUCED PRESSURE APPLICATION TO THE CLUTCHES, BRAKE, AND KICKDOWN SERVO, ALLOWING THEM TO SLIP.
- Consequence: SUCH SLIPPAGE CAN CAUSE PREMATURE DETERIORATION OF THE FRICTION ELEMENT SURFACES AND COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE NOT TO ACCELERATE, OR NOT ACCELERATE AS EXPECTED, WHEN THE DRIVER PRESSES THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE.

I'm glad to hear that you've had a positive experience with your car! It's unfortunate that you had some trouble with the dealer mechanics, but it's great that you're able to do your own repairs. It sounds like this car has been very reliable for you, even with all the miles you've put on it. And congratulations on your new Sonata! I hope you and your wife enjoy it just as much as your current car.
-
This car has been the best car for the money. It's spacious, affordable, and dependable. It's definitely the best value for your money.
-
I love my car. It's actually the first 'new' car I've ever bought. If I ever plan on buying another new car, I'll probably go for a new Elantra or upgrade to another Hyundai. They're such wonderful cars to drive and so reliable!
-
Hey there! I've been driving this car for a few years now and I'm happy to say that I haven't had any major issues with it.
-
I bought this car in 1999 and my family and I absolutely love it! Even after 6 years, it's still a joy to drive and we've had no major issues despite putting 70,000 miles on it. We've only had to change the oil and we still have the original brakes - we only had to change the tires once. The options are fantastic and the upgraded stereo system is amazing. Overall, we couldn't be happier with this vehicle!

When I first bought the car, the cruise control was not working properly. However, the issue was resolved under warranty after the installation of a new cruise switch and computer. Although it took three trips to the dealer, they were able to fix it. In addition to regular maintenance, some parts had to be replaced such as the front rotors, throttle position sensor, idle speed actuator motor, drivers side power window motor/track, exhaust manifold, fuel pressure regulator, both front interior door handles, rearview mirror, windshield, and driver side window trim/gasket. Unfortunately, the engine still idles roughly and causes the steering wheel to shake, but the dealer claims there are no problems.

From my point of view, my 99 model Hyundai Elantra wagon has been a good little car so far, considering its age. It cranks up every time I need it to and is pretty good on gas. It has just the right amount of room I need. Of course, with a car this old, things need to be fixed or replaced from time to time. I had to replace the starter because it went out on me, and I had to buy a new battery because the old one was weak. I also had to replace the front blinker assembly because it stopped working. The radio that was in it still worked, but the CD player wouldn't play, so I changed that out. So far, the only things that have had to be done to it are the tires, which are still in fair shape, and the body, which is also in fair shape with no rust. The window monitors need to be replaced because only one window is working. Overall, I would give it a 3-star rating.

My son purchased this 99 Elantra in 12/03 during his last year of high school. It had about 23k miles on it and now has almost 90k. We have done the usual maintenance, replaced tires and brakes once, and thought it would get him through college. Unfortunately, we were wrong. We had to replace the clutch in 5/06 and it had to be replaced again in 1/07, less than 8 months later, despite no change in driving habits or mileage. Now, we are having trouble selling it and the clutch is acting up again. Additionally, the inside door handles aren't the best and they just come off in your hand without any force. We have already replaced 3 of those.

I understand how you feel about your car. It can be frustrating to worry about making it to work every morning.

I purchased this car almost three years ago for $2500 with 62k miles. Unfortunately, from the beginning, it had a bad hub bearing and a few months later, the ignition coil went out. I have had to change the brakes at least two or three times and the spark plugs more times than I can count. It seems like every time I turned around, something else was going wrong. Despite doing all the maintenance and fluid changes, the transmission started to go at 90k miles and now, at 117k miles, it is on its last leg. I would not recommend buying this car. This was my second Elantra and I should have learned from my first experience. I will give it credit for still running after all its problems, but Hyundai's are cheap for a reason. There's a reason why you get the 100k warranty, so don't expect more than that out of it.
