1997 Hyundai Elantra problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).

First generation (J1; 1990)

The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.

It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.

The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Common 1997 Hyundai Elantra problems

Transmission Won't Shift/CEL Due to Failed Speed Sensors in Hyundai Elantra (1997)

The 1997 Hyundai Elantra's transmission system has been reported to have issues with shifting and the Check Engine Light (CEL) coming on due to failed speed sensors. The speed sensors are responsible for providing accurate speed information to the vehicle's transmission control module (TCM) and engine control module (ECM). When these sensors fail, the TCM and ECM cannot receive accurate speed data, leading to transmission problems and the CEL illuminating.

Symptoms of this issue include the transmission being stuck in a particular gear, delayed gear engagement, and the CEL being illuminated. This problem can be caused by various factors, including wear and tear, damage, or contamination of the speed sensors.

To diagnose this issue, a professional mechanic would typically use a diagnostic scan tool to read the trouble codes stored in the ECM. The specific trouble codes associated with this problem are usually P0700, P0705, P0715, and P0720, which indicate issues with the TCM, input/output speed sensors, and the transmission range sensor.

Once the faulty speed sensor is identified, it would need to be replaced to resolve the issue. The replacement process involves removing the affected sensor, cleaning the area, and installing a new sensor. It is crucial to ensure that the new sensor is correctly calibrated and installed to prevent further issues.

Hyundai Elantra Engine Problems

Hyundai engine problems are common in certain engine models and car models, including the Elantra. These engine issues can range from minor inconveniences to severe problems that affect the vehicle's performance and safety.

One common engine problem in the Hyundai Elantra is related to the engine stalling or dying while driving. This issue can be caused by various factors, including faulty ignition coils, spark plugs, or fuel injectors. It can also be due to issues with the vehicle's engine control module (ECM) or mass air flow (MAF) sensor.

Symptoms of this problem include the engine suddenly stalling or dying while driving, difficulty starting the engine, and the Check Engine Light (CEL) being illuminated. To diagnose this issue, a professional mechanic would typically use a diagnostic scan tool to read the trouble codes stored in the ECM.

Once the root cause is identified, the necessary repairs would need to be performed. This can include replacing faulty ignition coils, spark plugs, or fuel injectors, or reprogramming the ECM or MAF sensor.

Another engine problem in the Hyundai Elantra is related to the fuel tank assembly valve, which may not close properly. This issue can cause fuel to spill in the presence of an ignition source, leading to a fire. To resolve this issue, a dealership would need to install an additional fuel tank assembly valve.

Safety Recalls in Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Elantra has been subject to various safety recalls over the years, including issues related to the supplemental restraint system side air bag satellite sensors, fuel tank assembly valve, and MAF sensor.

These recalls are typically initiated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the vehicle manufacturer when a safety-related defect is identified. The recalls usually involve repairing or replacing the affected parts free of charge to the vehicle owner.

It is crucial to ensure that all safety recalls are addressed promptly to prevent potential safety hazards and ensure the vehicle's safe operation.

What year was bad for Hyundai Elantra?

2013 was not a good year for the Elantra. In fact, it's the sedan's worst year to date. CarComplaints identified the 2013 Elantra as the worst model year for the compact sedan.

Which year is best for Elantra?

We'd rate the 2007-2009 Elantra's, along with the 2015 and 2016 Elantra's in the middle range. They perform well, but not best. Not that you'll find them here, but the newer models, from 2019 onward have been rated highly, and so far haven't earned a lot of complaints.

Negative 1997 Hyundai Elantra car reviews

  1. Percy Kuvalis 2024-09-17

I bought my 1997 Elantra in 1996 and, despite my initial skepticism about the new model, I have learned to love it. It's a good, reliable car for the money, although it may not quite match up to Honda quality just yet. That being said, it's still a great price for what you get!

  2. Jay Champlin 2024-08-01

The car is comfortable, responsive, and rides well. It also has a great look. However, I have experienced some issues with it. Despite my diligence in maintaining it, it has required several repairs, including a transmission replacement and rebuild, a new battery, starter, door handle, and ignition cylinder. The speedometer cable and assembly also need replacing, and the trim surrounding the rear window is starting to fall off. Overall, I still enjoy driving this car, but I do wish I had purchased the manual transmission version.

  3. Winston Ankunding 2024-07-27

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it brand new back in December of 1997 and it's been a great ride ever since! It has 133,000 miles on it and it's still running smoothly. I did have a minor issue with the driver's side door handle breaking at around 90K, but other than that, it's been a reliable car. The windows do fog up quite easily and the inserts for closing the rear doors tend to pop out, but those are just minor inconveniences. I make sure to change the oil every 3,000 miles and keep up with other maintenance as needed. Overall, I'm very pleased with my car and would definitely recommend it to others!

  4. Jalen Nienow 2024-04-28

I purchased the car used in January 2003 with 36,750 miles on it. During the first year, I drove it a lot and had no issues. In August 2004, I had to replace the pulse generator and oil temperature sensor as the check engine light was coming on and the car was racing a little bit off the line. The cost of repair at the dealership was around $400. However, during Christmas 2004, I faced some issues with the car. I brought it to the dealership because the engine started racing again and the exhaust was awfully throaty. The dealership informed me that I needed a new transmission, a new front pipe, and a new manifold because the existing exhaust pieces were rusted. Additionally, the oil pan had rusted through and let go, and the head gasket had blown.

The clutch needed to be replaced after 60000 miles, and unfortunately, the speedometer broke at the same time. On the bright side, the fuel economy is okay. However, the seats are not very comfortable.

The car is excellent. It runs very well, is comfortable, economical, and has affordable parts.

This is my first car right after college. I have driven it for 93,400 miles and it has been a reliable companion. Although I have the means to buy a new car, I choose not to because this baby has never given me any major problems. The only issues I have had were a cracked gasket, a broken door hinge, and a CD player laser that sometimes acted up. Recently, I broke my inside door handle and a fuse keeps blowing, preventing me from shifting out of park (but you can override that). However, these are all minor issues. I replace the brakes every 40,000 miles and the gas mileage is between 25-29 mpg. The yearly maintenance and repair costs for everything are approximately $500. You can't go wrong with that! I have saved a lot of money with this car!

I had very few problems with this car and it still runs well. It's a steal for the price!

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share my experience with my SE model that I purchased brand new back in May of '97. I have been extremely pleased with its overall performance. Not only is it great on gas, but it has also proven to be very dependable. With 85,000 miles on it, it still runs like a charm! The 4 cylinder engine is surprisingly strong and the 5 speed transmission makes it a joy to drive. I have only needed to perform routine maintenance on it and have had no major problems. It has truly exceeded my expectations and I feel that I have definitely gotten my money's worth out of it! Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

I bought the car new and unfortunately had a problem with the overflow leaking. Although I believe it was the dealer's fault, they were unable to fix it. Additionally, I have noticed a strong gas odor whenever I fill up the tank, which has been an ongoing issue. Despite bringing it in multiple times, the problem persists and even new gas caps have not solved it. I have also experienced trouble with the door handle. However, the car has been a reliable companion on many trips from NY to FL and GA. Although I now have another car due to a growing family, the Elantra still comes in handy during snowstorms or whenever I need it. My other half now drives it on a part-time basis.
