The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

The check engine light, oil light, and battery light each turned on simultaneously. The car then stalled completely, but the lights remained on and the car didn’t lose power. The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
- Consequence: An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

The brake pedal stopper pad can deteriorate allowing the brake light switch plunger to remain extended when the brake pedal is released. This will allow the brake lights to remain illuminated continuously. It can also allow the shift lever to be moved without depressing the brake pedal, or activate the engine management brake pedal override feature.
- Consequence: If the brake light switch plunger does not retract as it should when the brake pedal is not being pressed, the brake lights may stay illuminated preventing accurate communication to following vehicles that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. Additionally, if the brake switch plunger is not retracted, then the transmission can be shifted out of PARK without depressing the brake pedal. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake pedal stopper pad, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin February 8, 2018. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 170. This campaign expands recall 16V574.

I purchased this car in 2014 and sold it to Carmax in 2021 when used car prices skyrocketed. Throughout those years, it proved to be a reliable and highly efficient commuter car. It never had any major reliability issues and was very cost-effective to operate. I even took it on some really long trips, including a cross-country journey from the west coast to the east coast and back. It handled everything from baking hot deserts to blinding snowstorms and pouring thunderstorms with ease. Although it's primarily an economy car, it's comfortable and spacious for its size. The front legroom was surprisingly good, and the rear legroom felt much better than the official 33 inches. However, it's important to note that it still feels like an economy car, and you'll feel the bumps in the road. On smooth California roads, this wasn't an issue, but driving around pockmarked winter-damaged East Coast roads was jarring. The electronics worked fine, but they were economy car electronics. For example, it had Sirius/XM, but the sound quality was a bit tinny, and the rearview camera had a small low-resolution 4-inch screen. Nevertheless, its small size and tiny turning radius made it easy to park almost anywhere.This car is great for navigating small city streets and narrow alleyways, making it an ideal urban or commuter car. While I had a minor issue with the key-fob, which had a very touch-sensitive remote trunk release, I was able to resolve it by taking it to a Hyundai dealer to disable the remote release. Overall, my experiences with this car have been mostly positive.

I've owned my 14 Elantra sport for 4.5 years now and have clocked 53,000 miles on it. When I was first shopping around, I looked at the limited and couldn't stand the 1.8l engine. However, after reading a few reviews on here, I'm glad I purchased the sport with the much better engine. When not in eco mode, I average 30-32mpg combined and still have that oomph when accelerating. The sport-tuned steering is incredible, and it truly feels like I'm driving a much more expensive sporty car than what I paid for it. The seats and interior are more comfortable than any car I've previously owned, and while it is small by today's standards, the touch screen display is good. I can't stand the styling of the latest models. The 2014 model had the most aggressive and appealing exterior and interior styling. The only two complaints I have are the cheap sunglasses holder and that since I bought the car, in cold starts, it's a hard first shift from 1st to second gear. After I'm a half-mile down the road, there are no problems whatsoever. The dealer said there was nothing wrong with the transmission, so I've lived with it since. The sunglasses holder has a cheap clip in it that has since been recalled. Even the slightest of bumps opened it. After three trips to the dealer, they finally replaced the front roof console, and the problem has since gone away. Overall, I'm very happy with the car. I paid $21,000 for it, and you just can't get the value here in anything else at that price. I understand if others think differently who bought the 1.8l engine. The drivability and handling are the best parts about the sport.

I just traded in my 2013 Volvo C70 for a brand new Elantra Sport with a 6-speed manual. This car is amazing! It has so many features like high-tech Bluetooth, a back-up camera, push-button start, heated leather seats, and a power driver's seat, just to name a few. I chose the Windy Blue with beige leather and the sound system is great. I also love the steering and the paint job is even better than on my old Volvo.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the Elantra SE that I purchased on June 8th. I've already put about 4700 miles on it and I have to say, it's been a really comfortable car for my daily commute of about 50 miles round trip. I've even taken it on several long road trips of over 300 miles and it's performed flawlessly. Overall, I couldn't be happier with my purchase from Hyundai. By the way, I'm a loyal customer as I also own a 2012 Hyundai Accent SE.

The car is rated at 38 Highway, 28 City and 32 Combined. Despite my initial skepticism, I was disappointed to find that the actual ratings were 30% lower than advertised. However, after conducting my own tests and receiving verification from the service manager of the dealership, it became clear that the car was not performing as advertised. Despite my complaints and involvement of the BBB, Hyundai initially refused to take any action. However, after further testing, an engineer was sent out and was able to achieve 40 mpg on the highway. While this is a good result, it does not reflect the reality of suburban driving, where the car averages 24-25 mpg. As a 66-year-old driver who avoids rush hour and uses cruise control, I feel that the car's performance is not meeting the advertised standards. I believe that this constitutes false advertising and I am disappointed that Hyundai has not taken any action to address this issue. As of February 2018, with 24,000 miles on the car, gas mileage remains the same, with 40-50% highway driving resulting in 24-25 mpg.After 4 years and 27,000 miles, my Hyundai Elantra's fuel efficiency has remained consistent, averaging 24-25 mpg despite the car's computer consistently showing 2-3 mpg/8-12% higher. I have come to believe that the computer is purposely set to show higher than achieved mileage to mislead owners and reduce complaints. I am curious to see the protocol for mileage tests, especially the city rating of 28 mpg. Despite my concerns, I have recorded all of my fuel mileage and found that I can achieve the EPA city rating of 28 mpg when driving on the highway for about 80% of the time. I have also experienced some issues with the engine ticking when cold and the trunk opening on its own, which I have reported to the service advisers. However, after going to a different dealer for service, they discovered that the engine had piston slap and replaced it at no cost due to my diligent record-keeping of oil changes. Although I am only on my second tank of gas since the engine replacement, I am still only getting about 24 mpg with 30-40% highway miles. It is worth noting that the original equipment tires did not have a mileage warranty and needed to be replaced at just 22,000 miles, but the car's fuel efficiency has remained consistent. Going to the dealer for oil changes is definitely worth the extra time and money. I had my engine replaced by Hyundai at about 47,000 miles due to knock (piston slap) that I had complained about on my 1st oil change. Thankfully, I had all my oil changes done at Hyundai. They can be very picky about having the oil changed regularly. Despite the engine replacement, I am still averaging 24.6 mpg in a car that is supposed to average 32 epa. However, having spent most of my working life in the car business, I understand that 30% less is not uncommon. I still have a problem with the trunk opening accidentally too, and I have seen a few in parking lots with the same problem. Silicone boots to cover my fobs have helped a little, but the issue persists.

I recently purchased a 2014 Elantra and noticed that the speedometer was off by 3 mph when it showed 35 mph, the car was actually only going 32 mph. I contacted Keys and took it in for testing, but unfortunately, they were unable to fix the issue and informed me that the car was within limits. While I am disappointed with the outcome, I understand that the dealer's hands are tied and it is up to Hyundai to resolve the issue. Although this experience has left me feeling uncertain about future issues, I remain hopeful that any future problems will be resolved. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Although I purchased the car just a week ago, I have decided to return it. Despite taking the car for two test drives before purchasing, I did not consider the angle of the seat bottom, which is extreme in the Hyundai. As a tall person, at 6.1, the front seats are extremely uncomfortable for me, causing my legs to go numb and making it difficult to walk after driving for more than 20 minutes. In the future, I will be sure to consider seat bottom angles when purchasing a car.

I purchased my Elantra brand new in 2014 and even got an extended warranty. The vehicle was running smoothly until one week ago in January 2022 when I heard a ticking noise in the motor. I took it to my mechanic who suggested I call Hyundai to see if it was still under warranty and if they could help me. Unfortunately, it was not covered under warranty and I would have to pay for the repairs myself. Despite only having 10600 km on the engine and paying $30000 for the vehicle, the engine is no longer functional and I refuse to pay Hyundai to replace it. It is disappointing that Hyundai has been aware of small metal pieces getting into the oil for some time now, yet they refused to provide any assistance. It is unacceptable for a company to receive $30000 for a vehicle that is not reliable. As a result, I have decided to purchase an older Honda and will not be buying a new Hyundai again.
