2023 Hyundai Elantra problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-06
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5NPLS4AG3PH
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: I have been encountering a series of troubling and erratic issues with my vehicle. These problems occur under various driving conditions, including acceleration, steady-state driving, and braking. However, the most prevalent and problematic occurrences seem to transpire during acceleration and braking. During acceleration, I've observed inconsistent behavior. Sometimes, the car shifts smoothly, with minimal torque drop between gears. On other occasions, the vehicle accelerates initially but then abruptly loses all power between gears, resembling the sensation of someone engaging the clutch in a manual vehicle and shifting slowly. This results in a temporary power loss lasting 1-2 seconds, followed by an over-revving and clutch slip, leading to an unintended surge in acceleration. The issues I've encountered during braking typically begin with a chattering noise and vibrations that seem to be an imbalanced or shocked reciprocating mass, I can assume maybe one of the clutches/flywheel . This is often followed by decreased brake pedal linearity, requiring increased brake pedal pressure to stop. This normally results in an unintended aggressive forward jerk just before coming to a stop, akin to someone releasing a clutch on a manual transmission vehicle too quickly when downshifting while the engine speed is too low. One night I went to get diapers for my baby and it was raining and I hit the breaks and the breaks lost control and I crashed into a median wall and my car kept spinning around. Ambulance were called and I was admitted to the hospital with minor injuries.
LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-08
- VIN: KMHLS4AG6PU
- Components: LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The vehicle applies automatic emergency brakes when another vehicle passes close by from behind in an adjacent lane, when the Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist, feature is set to “Active Assist.” The owner’s manual states that this feature operates when the turn signal is turned on in the direction of the detected vehicle. However, my experience shows that the car applies brakes even when the turn signal is off and the vehicle is driving straight within its lane, without changing lanes. As per NHTSA description automatic breaks to be applied if the driver ignores the warning and tries to change the lane. But Hyundai design applies brakes even if car driven within lane without any warning before applying break
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
- VIN: KMHLM4AJ8PU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The car has been making clicking noise when braking or acceleration for about a year. I had all recalls software updated. I have brought it in multiple times. First saying a wheel bearing needed replacement, then a lose bolt. It helped for a while and then the clicking started again. Then the system failure occured recently and all the lights came on. The dealer currently cannot figure out what the issue is. The ABS light is on and the brakes don't seem to be working properly. I can't safely drive the vehicle and have no car to drive now. I have had the car a little over two years so lemon law most likely does not apply to this situation.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-25
- VIN: KMHLS4AG0PU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: There was a recent over the air software update. Since the update, the speed limit shown on the dashboard, does not match the posted speed limit. This causes the cruise control to change from 70mph, to 55mph. This happened a few times, and always at the same place on the PA Turnpike. Yesterday it did it and there was a tractor trailer behind me. When my car started to decelerate, the driver of the truck laid on the horn because he had to react quickly. I am lucky that he did not hit the rear of my car. This is a safety issue! Also, why does Hyundai feel the need to control drivers speed, especially when there is no government mandate to do so.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-14
- VIN: KMHLS4AGXPU
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Car was breaking hard because of Active Assist despite that no car was in front. It was breaking consistently until I finally was able to disable the Active Assist. Luckily, there was traffic and driving at less than 20mph but this also happened some time last year at the same area where there was no traffic and was going at a minimum speed of 45mph and to have the Active Assist break hard put me at great risk of getting rear ended. I have footage from the dash cam which I unfortunately cannot attach as it's more than the 10MB limit.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-28
- VIN: KMHLM4AG2PU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: On July 28th 2024, I took my new 2023 Hyundai Elantra to its first oil change at a Take 5 oil change center. They replaced the oil, filter, checked the fluid levels in my car, and topped the fluids off. That evening, I noticed there was a liquid leaking from behind the passenger side tire, and at first thought it was water from the A/C, but in the morning, I noticed a puddle of liquid was under the car. I went back to Take 5 on August 5th and informed them that I believed there was coolant leaking from the vehicle following my oil change. The worker checked and said my coolant reservoir was completely empty, and he refilled the coolant and told me to take it to be diagnosed at a full service auto center. On August 13th I noticed there was a smell of burning metal coming from the engine bay when I turned the car on and took it to a Firestone where they informed me that the radiator cap had failed and was no longer holding the pressure in the radiator, and that almost all the coolant had leaked from my car. I had the radiator cap replaced and kept the original to take to the Hyundai dealership to see if this was a manufacturers defect or the result of improper handling by the Take 5 worker.
LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-08
- VIN: KMHLM4AJ9PU
- Components: LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Since 2/2/24 13 episodes of all safety features failing including blind spot monitor, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, and others. Last occurrence on 8-8-24. On one occasion the car failed to accelerate in the middle of an intersection, the car did move slowly and operation returned to normal after turning off the car and pressing the 12V reset button. Diagnostic codes found on car APP include both C164286 and C164202 for all 13 episodes. Despite being told this code is "for the speed sensor because it saw a voltage drop from the battery system" the dealer claims there is nothing they can do because they can't recreate the problem. This is highly dangerous to my family and others as the safety features can prevent accidents. The most concerning is the car suddenly losing acceleration as this could potential happen where there is no safe way to get off the road in time prior to an accident. This loss of acceleration has been reported by many other people on the Facebook group I am a part of called Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Owners. The loss of safety features occurred after all recalls were performed as of 8-8-24
TIRES PROBLEM

The contact stated that he and his daughter observed a blister on the tire sidewall that had burst. The contact stated that the tire was flat. The vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic or tire repair shop. The tire was not inspected and was not replaced. The contact stated that the failure was the third Kumho Solus 205/55/R16 that had developed blisters on the sidewall and failed. The approximate vehicle failure mileage was 20,000 and the tire failure mileage was 3,500.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-09
- VIN: KMHLN4AJ0PU

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-16
- VIN: KMHLM4AJ3PU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I experienced an issue where I was driving the vehicle, and then a "hybrid system fault" message appeared on the driver information display followed by the complete loss of power. This made me have to pull over to the side of the road with no ability to accelerate out of the way of traffic to come to a stop. Once I was stopped I tuned off the vehicle and tried to turn it back on, but the vehicle would not respond so I attempted pressing the 12 volt battery reset button to the left of the steering wheel to see if this would allow me to turn the vehicle on and the car came back to life with no warning lights or messages and drove normally. This happened three more times over the course of ~1.5 hrs on my way home on the highway. I understand that things happen, I just wish there was more warning before all power was cut and the vehicle went into limp mode as this left me in a dangerous situation. The vehicle has been dropped off at the dealer and is awaiting a new hybrid battery replacement under warranty.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-15
- VIN: KMHLS4AG6PU
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: car applies emergency brakes when another vehicle passes close by at higher speed from behind in adjacent lane when the blind spot collision feature in my car is set to "Active Assist". As per the owner’s manual page number 7-46 to 7-52, the collision assist is designed to operate when turn signal is turned on in the direction of detected vehicle. Also, it is mentioned that the audible warning will sound. In actual scenario car is applying breaks even when turn signal is off, driving straight, no lane change. Also, there is no audible warning sound when car applies automatic brake. Owner’s manuals write up is not matching with the issue I observed, and this is very serious safety issue.
SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-24
- VIN: KMHLS4AGXPU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Multiple times driving on highway at posted speed limit and vehicle displays emergency braking system and just comes to complete stop on highway with oncoming cars going 65mph. Has happened 3 times before.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-04
- VIN: KMHLS4AG8PU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: My 2023 Hyundai Elantra has started alerting me while driving that I was going the wrong way down a road. The alert goes something like: WARNING Entering into wrong way detected. This occurs when I'm driving the correct direction. I've Googled the issue and other Hyundai owners have documented receiving the same message. I believe this is dangerous if one is driving someplace unfamiliar and receives this message. It has the potential to alarm a driver into making a U turn and traveling into oncoming traffic.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-19
- VIN: KMHLS4AG1PU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Hi horn and low horn stopped working after 1 1/2 years of driving and only 7000 miles. This is a safety recall because it will fail West Virginia state inspection without the horn working. Also, it puts myself at risk while driving because I can't alert oncoming traffic if they are heading towards me. This could cause an accident. Hyundai Service Center will be inspecting the issue on 05/07/24.
SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-16
- Crash: 1
- VIN: KMHLN4AJ0PU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: 1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Ans: The Forward Collision Warning didn't detect any vehicle ahead of me at the time of collision which caused the crash. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Ans: Me and my co passenger were luckily not injured but got almost killed during the collision. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Ans: The dealership or the Hyundai Motor America couldn't replicate this issue. They didn't answer the question to why the detection didnt happen during the crash and why my Automatic Emergency Braking failed. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Ans: Yes, Hyundai Motor America had a 3rd party company named Bosch inspect the vehicle to check for any fault during the time of cash. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Ans: No there was no warning signs displayed during the time of collision and no signs after the collision as well. Funny part after the collision my front bumper came off, my headlights broke, and many other components were damaged like my air conditioning and my seat heater and stuff but none of those issues showed in my blue link report(a report that shows any signs of warnings or crash detection's) that came to me the next business day in my email from Hyundai.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-21
- VIN: KMHLM4AG2PU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: While driving in a straight line my brakes and brake pedal were activated without any pressure being applied and maintaining about 45 mph. I pulled over to check the car and see if there was anything stuck in the wheel well and saw nothing. I got back in my car and proceeded to drive 2 blocks where i then went to park and upon turning left to pull into a parking spot my car immediately stopped and indicated that the emergency brake had been activated. I had not touched the brakes or the hand brake whatsoever and using the handbrake to turn on and off the emergency brake did not fix this i had to just wait until it was released. Upon researching this other drivers of the same model and year have experienced this problem in more dangerous situations on the freeways and at high speeds. I believe the problem has to do with the emergency brake being activated due to an electrical problem.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-22
- VIN: KMHLN4AJ3PU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: My car has done 4 false automatic emergency braking incidents while I was on the freeway (all times). There was no vehicle in front of me or the sides and my car started applying emergency brakes with a message pop up on the digital dashboard. Looks like the system is falsely detecting there is a car in close proximity. When this happened, I noticed the back car hit the brakes and immediately switch lanes. The sudden brake could cause a collision. The car allows me to take control after a couple seconds but when the warning appears I can not. I have not reproduced or verified the case with a dealer but the instant has happen 3 times in the past month. It has not been inspected by any other parties.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-10
- VIN: KMHLN4AJ3PU
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Driving on a highway at 80mph, adaptive cruise control was engaged. It was a clear, sunny day, around 55 degrees F outside. We were 3.5 hours into a 4 hour drive. There were no cars in front of the vehicle. There were other cars in the lanes immediately to both the left and right of us, as well as a car behind us. The car gave a warning for Automatic Emergency Braking, although there was nothing to avoid. No vehicles were merging into us, no one was going to rear end us, and nothing was in front of us in or near our lane. The car then started braking automatically and attempting to swerve/turn automatically. I had to fight the automatic system to stay in our lane and not crash into the vehicles immediately to the left and right. This was extremely dangerous at highway speeds.

I've only had the car for a week, but I'm already getting 52 mpg with mostly city driving. I went for the limited trim with the leather seats and sunroof, and I must say, I absolutely love it!
-
As someone who has bought at least 100 cars in my time and will be turning 70 this summer, I've had the pleasure of owning a wide range of vehicles. I cut my teeth as a team on mostly mopars, roadrunners, chargers, kudas, GTX etc. I even had the privilege of owning the first new 84 Corvette in Oklahoma the week they were delivered, as well as the new four-door Jeeps the first week they were delivered. I was also one of the first to get my hands on the Chrysler Pacifica and the 300 the week they came out. And that's not even touching on the exotics - I've owned two different types of Ferraris, testarossas, and even the little Ferrari that Tom Selleck drove on Magnum PI in Honolulu. Suffice it to say, I'm definitely jaded when it comes to cars. I pick over them like you do fleas on your doggy. So, when I say that the new 2023 in line Elantra, which I call blue velvet, is one of the three best cars I've ever owned, you know it's high praise. I've had it for 6 months and put 6,000 miles on it, mostly on the highway cruising between 80 to 110. The other two cars that make up my top three are the 1984 280 ZX turbo t-top six-speed manual d o t s o n, which I bought in Dallas and drove all the way to San Diego and back home to Honolulu, and the 84 Corvette, which I bought in Tulsa and drove to San Diego and back home again. While the Elantra may not be as powerful as some of my other cars, it's definitely one of the best for the money and the warranty is as good or better than all of them except for the two I mentioned.
-
This car is my new baby! And her blue is so vibrant! And all the details and bells and whistles… I'm fascinated by all the upgrades and electronic components in just 8 years. I bought an Elantra in 2015 new also. All the stuff looked intimidating at first but it surprisingly very easy to use and understand.
-
I'm glad to hear that you love it!
-
The seats are designed to fit the driver comfortably and promote a friendly driving experience.

Hi there! I recently had my car serviced by Hyundai after driving it for 8,000 miles. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing some issues with the oil level lights ever since. Even after replacing the faulty sensor, the problem persists. It's frustrating to deal with this issue, especially since the car is only at 8.5k miles and was purchased new in August of 2023 as a SEL Convenience Package. However, I do appreciate the warranty and safety features that come with the car. I'm curious if anyone else has experienced similar issues with the Elantra, or if the 1.6T N Line models offer increased reliability. Thanks for your help!

Although there have been some issues with this car, I am confident that they can be resolved. The manufacturer has issued a recall due to an oil pump issue, but this shows that they are taking responsibility and addressing the problem. I trust that they will take care of any other issues that may arise. Overall, I am confident in the quality of this car and do not regret my decision to purchase it.

I really appreciate my Lava Orange N-Line. It offers a lot of features for the price, including a small sunroof and heated seats. While some people may argue about the speed of the N Line, I personally find it to be a bit slower than my 2020 Altima. However, I do have some concerns about the Hyundai DCT. In my experience, it can be dangerous when turning into traffic as it bogs and hesitates. Additionally, it shifts very roughly and can't seem to make up its mind about what gear it's in. I've tried all the driving methods and while using the paddles with traction and stability off in sport mode offers a slightly better experience, it's still not great. I also wish that Hyundai had put a limited slip diff in the car. Despite these issues, I find the car to be relatively comfortable and I appreciate the multiple driving positions it offers. The interior and exterior are also quite nice. However, I do think that the DCT belongs in a more expensive sports car where the manufacturer has perfected it. Overall, I would recommend test driving the N line before making a purchase, especially since they can be hard to find. This is my fourth Hyundai, but unfortunately, it will be my last. I regret not getting the Honda Civic SI with a 6-speed, as I feel like I would have more control over the car.

I had a negative experience with Hyundai in the past, which has unfortunately continued with my recent purchase of an Elantra limited. Despite being a brand new car, I noticed issues with the headlights and had to take it to my local Hyundai dealer for repairs. Additionally, the 3 year/36k mile maintenance plan did not meet my expectations as I was unable to get an appointment for an oil change for 2 months. However, I was able to get the issue resolved and found a reputable quick lube place to take care of the oil change. While I have had some issues with the car, I appreciate the efforts of the dealership and Hyundai to address them. After owning my trusty 13-year-old Prius, I noticed that it didn't have the smooth ride that newer models have with their CVT. Recently, my wife and I decided to sell it, and we visited our local Hyundai dealer for an appraisal. Unfortunately, their offer was lower than we expected. We shopped around and found that Hyundai and Subaru (owned by the same owner) offered the lowest prices. However, Vroom gave us the best offer, and we decided to sell it to them. They picked it up, conditioned it, and put it up for sale. While I appreciate a smooth ride, I understand that it may not be a priority for everyone. I hope the next owner enjoys the car for years to come. As for me, I'm sticking with Toyota and Honda. Their cars have always been reliable, and now that they're incorporating more technology, I'm even more convinced of their quality.

I've been driving this car for around 6 months now, and while it looks nice, I wouldn't purchase it again. There are a lot of things that can be a bit of a hassle to deal with on a daily basis.
