2016 Hyundai Elantra problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).

First generation (J1; 1990)

The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.

It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.

The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Common 2016 Hyundai Elantra problems

The 2016 Hyundai Elantra has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are the most prevalent issues:

  1. Engine Problems: The 2016 Hyundai Elantra has been plagued by engine issues, with many owners reporting ticking noises, engine failure, and high oil consumption. The problems are primarily due to defective pistons, connecting rods, and piston rings. Engine knocking is also a common complaint, which is attributed to faulty connecting rod bearings. These engine problems can be quite expensive to repair, with a new engine costing between $3,000 and $4,000.
  2. Airbags Not Deploying: Some 2016 Elantra owners have reported that the airbags failed to deploy in a crash. This issue has been the subject of numerous NHTSA complaints, and it poses a significant safety risk.
  3. Electrical Issues: The 2016 Elantra has had its fair share of electrical problems, including a glitch-prone infotainment system, a faulty Start/Stop button, and exterior lighting bulbs that wear out quickly. Additionally, the car's soy-based coated wiring attracts rodents that tend to nibble on the wires, leading to various electrical issues.
  4. Power Steering Failure: Many 2016 Elantra owners have reported locked and failed power steering, which can be dangerous, especially at high speeds. Some drivers have also complained about steering wheel lock-ups.
  5. Transmission Issues: The 2016 Elantra has been reported to have automatic transmission problems, with the transmission slipping gears and getting locked in a particular gear. This issue can cause the car to shut down and restart automatically, leading to a potentially hazardous driving situation.

While the 2016 Hyundai Elantra has no recalls, the majority of reported problems are quite serious and pricey. Consumer Reports puts the 2016 Elantra in the bottom 20% for reliability, making it one of the least reliable compact cars of the year.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-26
  • VIN: KMHD35LH7GU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I am writing to formally request an urgent investigation into a potential recall for my vehicle, a 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT. I purchased this vehicle in 2017 and completed my payments in March 2023. However, in late July, I experienced a catastrophic failure that has rendered my vehicle inoperable. While driving home from work, I suddenly experienced a complete loss of power. My car slowed down significantly, forcing me to pull over to the side of the road. Once I came to a stop, the engine failed to restart, despite the dashboard lights and radio functioning normally. It has now been over two months since my vehicle has been non-operational. After taking it to a certified repair shop for diagnosis, I was informed that the engine is seized. The estimated cost for repairs exceeds $13,000, which is financially unfeasible for me. This situation not only poses a significant financial burden but also raises serious safety concerns. A sudden engine seizure while driving can lead to dangerous situations, potentially endangering both the driver and other road users. Given the severity of this issue and its implications, I urge the NHTSA to investigate the possibility of a recall for engine-related issues affecting the 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT. It is crucial that affected owners receive the necessary support and that safety concerns are addressed promptly. Thank you for your immediate attention to this serious matter. I look forward to your prompt response.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-28
  • VIN: 5NPDH4AE8GH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The sun visors on both the driver and passenger sides of the car are made of plastic (under the fabric material). Both visors no longer work properly. The plastic body of the visor has cracked and broken which causes the visor to no longer stay in the up position. The passenger side only stays in the down position. But the driver side is at an awkward position where it sticks out. It will not stay up and it does not go down. The vehicle has not been in an accident to have caused this to happen. The car has had one consistent driver within the family and the primary driver is typically the only person in the car. The broken visors are not from being abused or misused. The fact that the driver side visor protrudes and impedes the drivers view is a safety concern. If the car were to be in an accident the sun visor is at an angle that it could potentially cause face/head contusions. The passenger side visor failed roughly 3 years ago. The driver side visor failed June 2024.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-15
  • VIN: 5NPDH4AE3GH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Just driving down the road and the drivers side front window fell down. I tried to push the switch for to make it go lback up because it was windy and rainy. It just made the window drop down more. I was wondering if anyone else has had this complaint . It’s pulled back up and taped but it won’t go back up and tape keeps coming loose. It’s expensive to fix . I also fixed my trunk latch which was on a recall because when I called the dealer at that time there was no recall on it. I was stuck at Walmart and it wouldn’t close. The dealer wanted over 700 to fix trunk latch so I bought the part to fix it but I am checking to see if anyone else has complained on the window motor .

STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-20
  • VIN: KMHDH4AE6GU
  • Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: I was driving down the interstate when my car completely locked up, my brakes stopped working, the steering wheel wouldn't turn, the car completely shut down, so I had to make my way off the bisy interstate luckily I didn't have an accident so I took it to a mechanic and found out the alternator went out, so it was replaced then less than a year later i had issues with the headlights not working then magically comong on while driving, and the interior lighta will work then bot work but the bulbs are new, leading to another replacement alternator, then less than about 8 months pass and I have issues with the electrical stuff again not wanting to work even when new bulbs are pit in the car, the radio turning on and off by itself and I've had to put it a third alternator in less than 3 years, it's a driving hazard and safety hazard. My driver side door handle will only open from the inside and it doesn't shut inkess the door is locked and the car has to be turned on. The belt in my 2016 hyundai elanyra looks like it's shredding and it's throwing black stuff on the inside of my hood. I've had preoffwsional mechanics look at it and the alternator is assembled correctly, and now my ball joints are all of a sudden needing to be replaced inthe front.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-23
  • VIN: 5NPDH4AE0GH
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: I purchased a new vehicle, 2016 Hyundai, from a local dealer, with a current mileage of 47,000. Hankook tires were OEM with the vehicle. I religiously bring my vehicle into the dealer for all maintenance, including rotating and balancing the tires every 3,000 miles. The first set of tires FAILED (less than 3/32) at approximately 23,000 miles. The dealer indicated that I need new tires and that the tread wear failure was more than likely due to a defective set. So, they sold me another set of the same tire. I was in the dealer the other day for maintenance, oil change, tire rotation, etc. and was told that the new set of tires have 3/32 left on them and that I need a new set of tires. These tires have approximately 24,000 miles on them. The Hankook tires that I have are supposedly warranted for 70,000 miles. The tread failure at 24,000 miles means I have approximately 1/3 of the use - advertised warranty and actual life expectancy is fraud - it is no where close. It is a gimmick to prorate and hook the consumer into buying another set of tires. The dealer is trying to sell me, yet again, ANOTHER set of tires. At this point I have gone through TWO SETS of Hankook tires, within 47,000 miles. This is not normal. OEM tires on my Honda lasted twice as long before having to purchase a new set. Yet, the OEM and new set that I purchased are averaging 23,000 miles each, with a said warranty of 70,000 miles?

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-21
  • VIN: 5NPDH4AEXGH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The following dealerships owned by Paul Peebles, Humble Hyundai, North Freeway Hyundai and Baytown Hyundai are unwilling to service the recall unless a customer schedules a return appointment to have $1,040.64 dollars of recommended repairs. On [XXX] I made an appointment for [XXX] for the recall service. When I presented, they told me that they did not have the part because they could not order it until I came in to have a photo taken of my VIN & odometer. I was told I needed to come back and gave me a 21-point estimate of required immediate attention work needed. One of the items was an alignment noting Tires - Damage/Abnormal Wear. The four tires on my car were purchased from Discount Tires on [XXX] and the alignment was done at NTB on [XXX]. So obviously, this was fraud. I became very upset on [XXX] realizing I had wasted my time and money and then to top the insult was being lied to. My sister had the same recall serviced in Austin and did not need to make two appointments for the recall. When I took my car to North Freeway Humble on [XXX] to have the recall serviced, I was told that I had been put on a DO NOT SERVICE LIST by the three dealerships owned by Mr. Peebles, Mr. John Ray, the General Manager at Humble Hyundai and Tim Shipe, Service Director of the three dealerships, Humble, North Freeway and Baytown. I would like an independent mechanic shop to service the recall. I no longer trust my car to be serviced at the above dealerships due to their dishonest business practices. Please help. I contacted Hyundai Customer Service to request an independent mechanic shop I could have the recall serviced and they told me that I needed to have the work done at a dealership. They recommended dealerships three and four hours away from my home. Please assist me in finding an intendent mechanic to service the recall. I no longer trust my car to be serviced at the above dealerships My VIN [XXX] & [XXX] need service. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Negative 2016 Hyundai Elantra car reviews

  1. Al Walsh 2024-11-25

My wife recently purchased a '16 Elantra Value Edition to replace her previous Mazda3 after a car accident. While it may not be as sporty as her previous car, it still offers great value for what you get. She has been averaging 32 mpg combined on her Elantra, which is still impressive. Although she has had some issues with the paint flaking off, which is a known issue for this generation Elantra, it's mostly cosmetic and doesn't affect the car's performance. If you're looking for a dependable and affordable car, this is a great option. However, if you're looking for a car that's more fun to drive or has a more luxurious feel, you may want to consider other options.

  2. Carlos Kozey 2024-10-13

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2004 Elantra and the service I received. Unfortunately, I've noticed that the quality of my new car isn't quite the same. I've had to replace the tires at 25000 miles for $500, get rear brake work done at 30000 miles for $300, and replace the clutch for $2200 (thankfully they're not making any more sticks!). Additionally, I had to replace the rear brakes due to rusted disks at 45000 miles for $400 and the trunk latch failed, costing me another $400. It's been a bit of a hassle, but I'm hopeful that things will improve. Thanks for listening!

  3. Laverne Hagenes 2024-10-12

Hi there! I've been driving my car for just 3 years and unfortunately, the 'shark fin' on top of my antenna fell off during a car wash. I went to the dealership to see if it was covered under warranty, but they informed me that it wasn't their responsibility. While I was disappointed, I understand that these things happen. However, I did some research and found that this seems to be a recurring issue. I also had to replace the battery recently, and while the dealership tried to charge me more than I expected, I was able to replace it myself. Overall, my experience with the Hyundai dealership hasn't been the best, but I'm hopeful that we can work together to find a solution. Thank you for your time!

  4. Taylor Daniel 2024-07-29

The paint on my car started peeling and despite the dealer's three attempts to fix it, the job was done poorly. Despite my attempts to contact Hyundai, they have not responded. As a result, I am disappointed that the warranty I purchased is not being backed by Hyundai. In the future, I will not be purchasing a Hyundai again due to this lack of support.

  5. Ewell Stroman 2024-03-08

I have extensive experience with two Hyundai engines, having driven the first for 125,000 miles and the second for an additional 10,000 miles. Despite purchasing the second engine used at 61,000 miles, I encountered the same issue of piston slap. Unfortunately, this issue was not covered under the lawsuit as my state was not considered a cold weather state, despite being located less than an hour away from one. As a result of this experience, I have decided that neither I nor my family will be purchasing another Hyundai vehicle in the future.

Positive 2016 Hyundai Elantra car reviews

  1. Maxwell Donnelly 2024-10-25

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share with you that I recently purchased a new 2016 black Hyundai Elantra from Rick Case Hyundai in Duluth. I named it after the amazing Serena Williams, who is undoubtedly the best women's tennis player of all time. The car came fully loaded and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I was pre-approved for financing, so I was able to focus on finding the perfect car for me. With the help of Blessing Iyere, my salesman, I was able to negotiate a great deal and drive away with my new baby on the same day. I'm truly grateful for the wonderful service I received and I highly recommend Rick Case Hyundai to anyone in the market for a new car!

  2. Efren McLaughlin 2024-10-15

  4. Melvina Murray 2024-07-28

After searching for over a year, I finally found a 2016 car with low miles that wasn't a rental or damaged by a previous owner. Although I enjoy the car, I have noticed an issue with the steering. The steering is a drive by wire system, which means there is no power steering pump or fluid. Apparently, there are sensors in the steering column that send signals to the steering rack. While driving on the freeway, the steering wheel binds or requires you to nudge it out of a fixed straight position. If you tend to steer with one hand while on the freeway and rest your right arm on a handrest, for example, you'll need to learn how to drive with two hands on the wheel. Additionally, unlike other cars I've driven, the steering wheel doesn't recentre itself when coming out of a turn. You have to actively return it to the center position yourself. The car has been to two dealers who state that nothing is wrong with the car. Therefore, I would recommend a freeway test drive or a drive where there are slight curves in the road before purchasing a used one. UPDATE: The dealership replaced the entire steering column, and the steering wheel binding is now history. This work was done under a TSB. The sunroof motor was also replaced since the last review. Otherwise, there are no defects, just regular dealership maintenance. 2020 Update: I have not had to visit the dealership for anything other than oil changes. 2021 Update: The car continues to be reliable and low cost to own at 47,000 miles.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2016 Hyundai Elantra. I bought it brand new and used it for work, and by 2019 it had 186,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, it was in an accident and was totaled. The only maintenance I did on the car was change the oil every 3,000 miles and put new brakes and tires on it. Despite the high mileage, the car still ran perfectly before the accident.
