2006 Hyundai Elantra problems

The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).

First generation (J1; 1990)

The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.

It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.

The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Negative 2006 Hyundai Elantra car reviews

  1. Mack Jenkins 2024-11-10

The car has been reliable so far, with only a few minor issues with the interior. Hyundai was able to fix these issues without any problems. However, the car could benefit from more horsepower as it is slow to start and difficult to pass other vehicles. With only 138 horsepower, adding an additional 40 horsepower would greatly improve its performance and make it more enjoyable to drive. That being said, if you're looking for a practical vehicle for transportation, this car is great. I have the hatchback model and with the back seat down, it can fit a lot of stuff. I've owned it for 5 months now and have only had to bring it in for its 7,500 mile service with no major issues so far.

  2. Alexander Ondricka 2024-09-28

Although the Hyundai Elantra GLS was purchased only 4 months ago, it has not met my expectations in terms of handling. The car's acceleration is not as responsive as I would like, and the gas pedal has a soft and loose feel to it. In comparison to my previous 1999 Corolla, the Elantra's handling is subpar. While the car looks nice for the price, I do not feel safe nor enjoy driving it.

  3. Jameson Batz 2024-09-24

I currently own an 06 Elantra, after owning an 02 Elantra, and I have noticed a significant decrease in gas mileage. Unfortunately, I am not getting the 18 miles to the gallon that I used to get, despite taking good care of it and bringing it in for regular maintenance. Additionally, I have noticed some issues with the reliability of the parts and the build quality of the car. The interior has begun to show some wear and tear, with switches and knobs breaking and the cloth seats coming apart. As someone who primarily uses the car for city driving, I am disappointed that it is costing me so much to maintain. However, I still appreciate the features that the Elantra offers and hope that these issues can be addressed in future models.

  4. Gussie Williamson 2024-08-28

The catalytic converter failed shortly after the warranty expired, followed by the radiator and all belts, including the timing belt. Despite only being driven about 5,000 miles per year, the vehicle had 26,000 miles on it when purchased. Regular oil changes and maintenance checkups were performed, and the air conditioning was the only component that functioned without issue.

  5. Giovanny Batz 2024-05-24

I bought a Hyundai Elantra in 2006. About 11k miles on the car that I noticed my right rear tire's treads are exposed. I TOOK THE CAR TO FIRE STONE ON TALBERT AVE. IN FOUNTAIN VALLEY CA., TO BUY A NEW TIRE, THE ATTENDANT BEFORE SEEING THE CAR ASKED ME IF I NEED TO REPLACE THE RIGHT REAR TIRE OF A HYUNDAI. I asked how did he know about the exact tire of the specific car he told me this is a common problem with HYUNDAIS Shortly after my driver side door handle broke while under warranty TUTTLE CLICK HYUNDAI said it is vandalism and not covered under warranty. I followed all procedures and finally went to SMALL CLAIM COURT where the judge ruled no one is responsible for the warranty work

Positive 2006 Hyundai Elantra car reviews

  1. Haskell Smith 2025-01-01

During my time stationed in Germany from 1969 to 1971, I had the pleasure of owning a 1965 BMW. I have fond memories of driving it on the two lane 'Bundestrasses' and pushing it to its limits. Recently, I purchased a 2006 Elantra and was pleasantly surprised by its handling. I can comfortably cruise at 65 to 70 mph, and effortlessly navigate the corners on the rural roads of Texas. The car feels like it was made for these roads, and I am thoroughly impressed. I am so satisfied with this car that I plan on purchasing more Hyundais in the future. Once I pay off this car, I plan on keeping it and replacing my 1990 Wrangler with a new Tucson. By the way, I am getting an impressive 36 miles to the gallon on these roads.

  2. Tristin Grimes 2024-11-13

You've had this for 10 years now and it still works perfectly today. It's amazing that you haven't had any major problems with it since the day you purchased it in 2006!

  3. Johann Emmerich 2024-11-12

I purchased my car from Universal Hyundai in Orlando back in May 06. My first contact with them was through the internet, and I must say, they gave me an amazing deal of $13,900. No other dealer in the area could match it. The salespeople were extremely helpful and went over every detail of the car with me. The service I have received has been top-notch. Whenever I get my car serviced at the dealership, I get 'tires for life'. My wife and I even took the car on a trip to NJ, and it ran exceptionally well, averaging over 32 mpg. One tank even got over 36 mpg! The car is exactly what I was looking for, and we are even considering trading our SUV for the new Elantra (once we see it, of course). We are also considering the Sonata or Azera. I have no complaints with the car or the dealership.

  4. Ron Abbott 2024-10-18

This car has been full of surprises! It gets an impressive 33mpg on the highway and 26-27mpg in town. And can you believe it cruises at 100mph easily on the highway? (Yes, 100mph. Easily!) The ride on the highway is much smoother than you would expect, and even when pushed at a brisk rate, the car still handles very well, never leaving you feeling out of control. Plus, the brakes are good. And the best part? No rattles or squeaks! The quality of build is very impressive.

  5. Gaston Quitzon 2024-10-12

You can always count on this vehicle to be reliable and comfortable, while also providing great gas mileage.
