2020 Hyundai Elantra problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).

First generation (J1; 1990)

The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.

It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.

The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Common 2020 Hyundai Elantra problems

The 2020 Hyundai Elantra has been reported to have several common problems by its owners, which include issues with the soy-based wiring attracting rodents, cruise control failing to engage properly, and some difficulties changing gears.

Firstly, a widespread complaint among 2020 Elantra owners is the soy-based wiring throughout the engine, which is known to attract rodents due to its smell. This issue can lead to significant damage to the car's electrical system, as the rodents may chew on the wires. The best solution to this problem is to install a strobe light and ultrasonic device under the hood to deter rats, which can cost around $30.

Secondly, some owners have reported issues with the cruise control failing to engage properly within the first 1,000 miles. This problem can be resolved by installing software updates for the cruise control software, which can improve its reliability. Most dealerships will install this software for free, while others may charge around $50.

Lastly, there have been rare reports of the Elantra failing to change gears, particularly in models with the continuously variable transmission (CVT). This issue can occur around 2,500 miles and can only be fixed by replacing the transmission. While this can be covered under warranty if it happens with low mileage, out-of-warranty replacement can cost over $3,000.

In addition to these common problems, there are three recalls on the 2020 Hyundai Elantra, including a loose lower control arm ball joint that can detach, piston oil rings, and lug nuts. Hyundai will replace the affected parts for free under these recalls.

Overall, while these problems can be frustrating for owners, they are similar to issues found in other compact cars, leading to average repair costs as the Elantra ages. Regular annual maintenance costs for the 2020 Hyundai Elantra are around $370 per year, similar to other compact cars.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Elantra, 2019-2021 Kona and Veloster vehicles equipped with 2.0L Nu MPI engines. The piston oil rings may not have been properly heat-treated, which could result in engine damage.

Is the Hyundai Elantra 2020 reliable?

Reliability 8/10 – There are no widespread complaints on the 2020 Elantra. Avoid models from 2012–2015 which have a lot of engine problems while 2016–2022 are more reliable. Performance 7/10 – Performance is okay from all of the four-cylinder engine options, although it's not as fast as the competition.

What is the most common problem with the Hyundai Elantra?

Is Elantra good or bad?

If the car isn't ideal, there is little point in investing in it. The Hyundai Elantra boasts excellent reliability on the market. According to withclutch.com, the Elantra scores 69.25, which makes it a very reliable option. It's one of the highest-scoring Hyundais, making an excellent name for the brand.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-06
  • VIN: 5NPD84LF2LH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My vehicle stalled. I was heading to work and vehicle just cut off while driving. The day before it had started making a strange knocking, clicking sound. It will not charge and will not start up. I have not contacted manufacturer and not inspected by manufacturer. I checked vin # but not on recall list. I have kept my car up to date with servicing. The noise it made when it started to stall was really loud and then cut off. My safety was put at risk because I take the highway to work everyday and almost reached the highway that day before it stalled. My car is used for taking my kids to school, doctors appts and work. I am thankful my kids were not in the car when this happened. It had to be pushed off the road in a high traffic area causing a safety issue.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05
  • VIN: 5NPD84LF8LH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine failure: Engine light came on and oil level was abnormally low, even though oil had been changed not long before. Before able to add buy more oil to add when checked, the engine gradually lost pressure and wouldn't stay started. Died in the middle lane of highway all of a sudden. Inspection under hood showed that there was oil all around on engine and some on the ground. Towed to dealership and was not told of interim recall 21V-301. Possible acceleration of engine oil consumption due to bad piston oil rings. Later I researched and found that Hyundai was to inform owners that they were encouraged to check the level of oil periodically between oil changes...that accelerated oil consumption was possible due to this issue of the oil rings. Had to research and find myself.

  • Summary: The warning lamp (engine light) illuminated blinking on and off. Engine code P1327 read on the diagnostic check, riding on the expressway was a little uncomfortable, engine was losing power which is unsafe at high speeds. I’ve contacted the nearest Hyundai dealer and scheduled an appointment for the car repair. I take care of the car and any repairs for maintenance and I never have any problems whatsoever until day. After doing research Hyundai had or has a recall for my vehicle with the VIN NUMBER starting with KMH, for engine replacement and I want to know if Hyundai can fix this issue.

STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 5NPD74LF2LH
  • Components: STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: The contact called on behalf of their son who owns a 2020 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while their son was decelerating, speed was unknown, and coming to a stop sign. The next thing their son was able to recall was that the vehicle had suddenly turned right crashing into an electrical pole nearby. The air bags deployed. The driver had lost consciousness during the crash making it difficult to recall all that occurred. The vehicle was towed but they had not yet received any confirmation if the vehicle had been totaled. The electrical pole had fallen and began to catch fire. The fire department had put out the fire. The contact was not completely sure of the damage done to the vehicle. The driver lost consciousness and received an injury on their right arm. Medical attention was needed. The contact could only assume a police report had been filed but had not heard from the police department to confirm. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-18
  • VIN: 5NPD84LF6LH
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: The high beams failed and Hyundai will only say that my VIN isn’t part of the recall. Service Campaign T5G covers the exact same symptoms that my car is experiencing. Since Hyundai refuses to acknowledge that the safety issue in this campaign affects more than what they’ve previously admitted, myself and other owners are left to repair the defect at our own expense. A Google search brings up more than a few posts of owners that were also denied the recall because Hyundai says that their 2020 Elantra VIN isn’t included in the recall. This shows that Hyundai refuses to acknowledge the full scope of the vehicles that have defect. Proper headlight function is absolutely necessary. High beams not working even cause state inspections to fail. Hyundai needs to be forced to fix this major defect in a safety critical lighting system, as it is clear that they have no desire to keep the owners of their 2020 Elantras safe.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-17
  • VIN: KMHD74LF2LU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The soldering of the end cap in the engine fuel rail failed and allowed gas under pressure to leak out. Fuel sprayed out in the engine compartment and the smell was evident inside and outside of the vehicle while in operation. Not sure how it did not start an engine fire. Repairing was a simple task that I handled as this is the only vehicle available to me. Ordered a new fuel rail which was only available from a dealer without issue and completing the repair went without issue. Did not have anyone else look at the problem as once I figured out the problem, did not want to drive the car anywhere. I have the old fuel rail for anyone who needs to inspect it.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-26
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 5NPD84LF5LH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On [XXX} 2023, [XXX]. I was driving to work which is only 5 miles away. All my my dash lights came on. Next thing I know smoke, and fire started billowing out from under the hood. I started having a panic attack because the electrical system died and I could get out of the car. I then realized all I had to do was open the door handle. I called 911 and the police and fire department came and put the fire out. The entire under the hood was burned and some windows cracked from the heat. It was a scary ordeal. Im not sure what cause the engine to catch fire. I filed a report with the police and the car was towed. My insurance came and towed it to do an evaluation. They deemed it a total loss and blamed the engine. There was a recall on my engine for fires and state farm documented it in my loss report. I'm not sure who to go after for this because I had the car for 10 months, put $4000 down. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-03
  • VIN: 5NPD74LF9LH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The component which failed was the engine. This engine has been burning oil from the day in which we bought it. This engine puts everyone at risk because it failed in the middle of traffic, and We could have been hit by oncoming traffic. The problem could not be reproduced because the engine tied up in the middle of the road. We had the vehicle towed to the dealer who said it was not covered under the warranty due to abuse. The oil had been changed at the proper intervals, and we are sure the engine failed because it was a poorly made engine. This engine had exactly 69,993 miles when it tied up. We attempted to have it repaired at 54 thousand miles but the dealer said we need more money to check it out, but when they sold it they said the engine was covered. When we brought it in we asked for a loaner, but initially they refused. Three weeks later, we demanded a loaner as we happen to see the owner Steve Taylor at the customer service desk and he complied. After a month and a half without our car getting repaired they said we did not change the oil at the proper intervals, and said we need receipts for every oil change. We have a fully equipped auto shop in our steel-frame barn in which we replace engines for our Cars-for-Christ fundraiser program, and completed all the oil changes through our own mechanic. Before we could retrieve our purchase our oil purchase receipts they said, Hyundai will not replace this motor and it is not covered, we can put another engine in your car for 10,000 dollars. We still owe 14thousand on this car, and 4 thousand of that was for the 2017 Sonata which we bought that failed and we had to trade that to buy this 2020 Elantra. I have read all the complaints on these engines and they are OIL BURNERS. We put full synthetic oil in this engine and before it was time to change the oil, it was out of oil. We had to constantly put oil in this car about 1.5 to 2.5 per month. Now, we must replace this engine and pay 14k? HELP!!!!!

THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON ON 4/12/2024 AND I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER IMMEDIATELY. THEY CALLED ME ON 4/15/2024 STATING THAT THEIR ENGINEERS AND TECHS HAD HAD PROBLEMS ON THE TRANSMISSION RECENTLY INSTALLED ON IT DUE TO MANUFACTURING AND/OR FAULTY PARTS, AND TO REPLACE THAT TRANSMISSION WITH A NEW ONE. STILL WAITING TO GET THE VEHICLE BACK AT THIS POINT IN TIME.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-11
  • VIN: KMHD84LFXLU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The vehicles engine has gone through a gradual decrease of power and then the car went into "Limp mode" and began burning oil. I have taken it to dealer multiple times and they would run diagnostic and never find anything significant. When it went into limp mode I took it back to dealer and they ran diagnostic and said the engine was bad. They said that the car is out of warranty and they would not cover the repairs. When I look into the problems that the vehicle was exhibiting there was a recall 203 that describes my problem exactly. When I look it shows this was completed at around 6000 miles. I believe this was done to early in the vehicles life and it didn't exhibit any of these issues. Now at 80,000 miles the engine now has all the issues described in the recall and the manufacturer will not replace or repair the engine

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-27
  • VIN: 5NPD84LF7LH
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Good morning, I was hearing a rubbing noise every time I turned my steering wheel on my 3020 Hyundai Elantra. I did some research and found a Hyundai service bulletin explaining the worm gear shaft. I brought it to my local Hyundai dealership in Manchester New Hampshire. They confirmed that it was indeed the worm gear shaft. They replaced it and charged me but when I called the Hyundai corporate office, they explained to me they would not be able to reimburse me even though it has happened on many of their Hyundai and other cars. I am requesting help for this unfortunate situation. The cost of replacement was over $500. Why is the worm gear shaft problem not a recall as of yet? If I would not have had this fixed, it would have caused other problems in the steering. Ty

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-30
  • VIN: 5NPD84LF7LH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: TOOK OUR VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER ON 1/30/2024 TO HAVE THEM LOOK AT THE ENGINE AS MY REGULAR MECHANIC STATED THE "ENGINE WAS KNOCKING" AT THE MOST RECENT OIL CHANGE, AND GET IT TO THE DEALER AS IT SHOULD BE UNDER WARRANTY. TURNS OUT IT DID NEED AN ENGINE WHICH THEY REPLACED YESTERDAY FINALLY, HOWEVER WHEN THEY TOOK IT FOR A TEST DRIVE THEY STILL HEARD NOISES. THEY EXAMINED IT FURTHER AND TODAY THEY NOTIFIED ME IT ALSO NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION. THIS VEHICLE WE HAVE HAD SINCE WE BOUGHT IT NEW IN JANUARY OF 2021, HAD LESS THAN 10K MILES ON IT WHEN WE TOOK IT INTO THE DEALER ON 1/30/2024. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. THANK GOODNESS I HAD ALL MY RECEIPTS TO PROVE REGULAR PROOF OF MAINTENANCE ESP SINCE I HAVE A REGULAR GUY AND DID NOT HAVE IT DONE AT THE DEALERS.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-04
  • VIN: 5NPD84LF6LH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Started noticing my 2020 Elantra was "jerking", "lurching" while in motion of driving. RPM would shoot up. A handful of times I would be losing power and almost not make to where I was headed. Starting/Turning from a dead stop, I would have no power and then suddenly it would surge and then I could get up to speed. I did not have any indication before hand or while driving. I did not have any lights come up, while driving or when it did the startup check when turned on. I barely made it to a Auto service, he drove it from one end of the parking lot to the other, then whipped into a bay for him to look at. I was told it was the Transmission, specifically CVT slippage and he suggested I do not drive home.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-19
  • VIN: 5NPD84LF7LH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: I took the vehicle in for it's regular oil change on 1/19/2024. My regular mechanic stated to me that "the engine is knocking, you need to get it to the dealer so they can fix the issue as it should be under warranty." He finished the oil change and we came home and immediately made an appointment with our local Hyundai Dealer - that appointment is on 1/30/2024 at 9 am. This is an extremely concerning issue as it affects the whole vehicle and the ability of it to be driven and last a long time. No warning lamps, or messages occurred for this issue, only the statement by my regular mechanic. I want to make sure this is documented in case Hyundai tries to get out of fixing the issue. This could be a very expensive problem. The appointment was made for the 30,000 mile service, but I will make sure they are aware of the engine issue when I take it in as well.

Negative 2020 Hyundai Elantra car reviews

  1. Laurel Jones 2024-11-08

This car is really comfortable and comes loaded with safety features. The interior is very nice, with an electronic driver display. You'll be able to get 50-55 mpg on the highway.

  2. Karl Spinka 2024-11-05

While Hyundai did get me into a brand new car after paying off my negative equity Dodge Dart, I was initially hoping for a Veloster. Unfortunately, they were out of stock, but they were able to offer me a good deal on this car, which I needed since my Dart required a new engine. However, I have found that the car is not the best fit for me. As a shorter person at 4'11

If you're taller than 5-8, you might find entry and exit a bit uncomfortable. The seat quality is not great, except for the lateral support. The road noise from the front is the predominant sound when driving, and the radio audio could be better.

I recently flew into Montana and had to choose between the Elantra, Corolla, or Sentra. Since I currently own a new Sonata Limited 2.0T and have owned 2 Elantra Sports, it was an easy decision. However, I was disappointed with the 2020 SEL model with over 14,000 miles on it. The ride was very stiff, and the IVT transmission was not to my liking. Although it was smooth, I couldn't feel the power. The interior looked cheap for the SEL model, but the driver's seat was comfortable with height adjustment. The noise level was loud, but the gas mileage was impressive, especially at over 65mph with the A/C on and outside temperature of 90. Overall, it's not a bad car, especially with all the standard safety features. However, I do not like the transmission.

I recently switched from my Chevy Malibu to a Hyundai 2020 SEL, which has some really cool driving features. However, I did notice that the interior of the Hyundai is quite small, and the trunk is not very spacious. Additionally, the music quality is not as good as my old 2016 Malibu LS. While the exterior of the car is attractive, there are some minor areas where it falls short compared to its competitors. I may consider getting rid of it after 18 months. I did experience an issue with the Apple Play feature popping up on my screen when I plugged in my iPhone 11 to the USB, but overall I am enjoying the car.

I'm so glad to hear that you were impressed with all the tech/safety features that come with this car. Additionally, the ride is smooth and the seating position is comfortable, making for an enjoyable driving experience.

Wow, congratulations on your 4th Elantra! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the new IVT engine, especially in Sport Mode. The leather seats sound super comfortable, and it's fantastic that the upgraded sound and Navigation system are the best yet for the Elantra. The Limited headlights are excellent, and the safety features are really impressive. It's great to hear that the car is reasonably quiet, except on bad or deeply grooved pavement. The Elantra is by far the best handling car you've owned, and it sounds like it's really fun to drive over mountain roads. I can understand your disappointment about the rear heated seats being dropped, and the lack of a pull-down cover for the front of the dash. However, it's great to hear that you love the new Portofino Dark Gray color so much that you travelled 170 miles to find it. Overall, it sounds like you have an excellent car!

Elantra is a great car. It's dependable, stylish, and a good value!

I got a rental from a rental place and they gave me a 2020 Hyundai ELANTRA four-door sedan. Here are the pros: It drives super smoothly and makes you feel like you're flying. The sound system and speakers are fantastic and I was able to easily play music from my iPhone XR without any confusion. The car also has plenty of special additions and cruise control. The only cons are that it's not great on gas and the bucket seats make it difficult to get in and out of, especially if you have long legs. Overall, it's a great car to drive!

Great price for a compact sedan that has many standard options. Runs extremely well and is good on gas.
