2022 Hyundai Elantra problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-03
- VIN: 5NPLM4AG3NH
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: While driving highway speeds (65mph-75mph) the emergency braking system randomly activated causing my car to slow to almost a halt and swerve itself in the middle of the highway almost causing multiple accidents. It has happened 2-3 times over the past 2-3 months. Brought to a dealer and it could not be "duplicated" so I was sent on my way worried about this car.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
- VIN: KMHLN4AJ7NU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: My hyundai elantra 2022 hybrid abruptly told me to pull over after driving on the highway for 30 minutes. The Hybrid Warning System light came up on dash and told me to pull over. After pulling over the car lost power and had to be jumped with the 12V battery reset button. Car is able to be driven again but will continue to have the same problem every 30 minutes unless the air conditioner and apple airplay or radio is off. I sent the car to Hyundai Dealership 7200 W Sahara Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89117 since [XXX] and the service technician did not contact me back for one week until I went in [XXX] to inquire. They said there is a voltage shortage somewhere but can not pinpoint yet and are working on it. I was given number to Hyundai customer service and a case manager is trying to contact the dealership to inquire the warranty before providing rental car. The dealership is not picking up so this write will go in [XXX] to try to connect case manager and get rental loaner car situated. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-01
- VIN: KMHLM4AJXNU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: When driving the vehicle for more than 10 minutes, the dash will display " Check hybrid system. Stop safely" the vehicle will completely stall and will not allow you accelerate forcing you to pull over, turn the vehicle off and reset the 12v battery. Once this is done the car will turn on normally as if nothing happened. This issue happens randomly and without a warning. It was occurred on the highway many times while traveling 60+ mph and I had to stop abruptly and was forced to slow down drastically and pull over on a median and reset the car. Another incident, I was in the middle of intersection about to turn left and my vehicle stalled out in the middle of oncoming traffic causing cars to have to swerve to avoid me in the middle of the intersection. Also since it occurs very randomly, the car stalling out and it not allowing you to accelerate it poses a risk to drivers that are not paying attention and could cause a rear end accident. I have taken my car to the dealership twice for this issue and they have not been able to diagnose the issue but can see the history of the codes the car gave when it occurs. There was a recall and I took my vehicle so they can perform software update and the issue was still occurring despite the update. This has been occurring since late 2023. I purchased the car in 2021/2022.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-25
- VIN: KMHLN4AJ0NU
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: We were on our way home from the beach on [XXX]. Coming through Birmingham on [XXX] in the far left (fast) lane traveling 78-80 mph with traffic flow, the car starts sounding a loud alarm with red flashing lights on the dashboard. The notification flashing said to “Check Hybrid system HEV BATTERY, Stop safely”. The car began to power down with no acceleration. I was unable to get across to the far-right lane to pull over, we had to just squeeze in between the concrete barrier and the cars flying by. Not to mention no flashers – nothing. The car is DEAD. We started to google hoping someone else had this issue and posted what we could do. There was a video for this exact issue stating to push a button on the left side of the dash that would reset the battery. We did that and it began to power back on. We rode in the far-right lane for the rest of the ride home, worried it would happen again. It did. On [XXX]., I was able to move over while it was powering down and get out of traffic. We received a notice from Hyundai around this time stating there were 3 recalls that needed to be fixed and one involved the HEV battery. We assumed it would fix this issue. We got another notice about 3 additional recalls (one also involved the HEV battery) and we called to get it scheduled but they were already booked out until Sept. So, we scheduled that appointment for the 2nd week in Sept. Fast forward a few weeks after making that appointment and after the recalls were done, it did it again 2 days in a row on my way home from work. One of these times it powered down and the only place to pull off was in a turning lane. The turning lane happened to be for oncoming traffic, but I thought I could hit the reset fast enough to be safe. It took a little longer than expected and I have many videos of this and cars were having to go around me to make their turn. I have one other I can go into more detail another way. We dropped the car at a dealership on 8/12 and have h INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-07
- VIN: KMHLN4AJ4NU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: The vehicle, which is under warranty, has shut itself off three times with an error message regarding the hybrid system. After having the vehicle towed to the dealership, they found no codes, errors, or messages to address. As a result, they won’t proceed further with troubleshooting and told me to address Hyundai directly. This is a significant safety hazard.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-02
- VIN: 5NPLN4AGXNH
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Check foward safety feature dashlight came on while driving, my blue link app told me the DTC c162078 chassis alignment failed front radar On Jun 4th 2024 while in park and idle my steering wheel kept going side to side, I recorded it not sure if that had something to do with this happening on July 2, 2024 and my safety is in jeopardy I feel due to the forward collision not working, smart cruise control not working, made appointment at hyundai dealership and I showed them the code bluelink told me to show them and they said they have to diagnose car themselves and the cost would be $169.99. I had to call hyundai customer care and get a claim number because dealership said they had to charge me. Two days i waited for dealership to call me the lady stated to let dealership know to waive diagnostic fee, I was told they would waive fee but I would need to pay $497 for part and $500 for labor which includes labor and recalibration, I told them I am financing a car I don't have safety features for, so I believe this should be listed as a recall or it should be fixed free of charge, being this is no fault of my own. No accident, didn't hit anything , I was driving at night and smooth roads. Dealership wanted me to lie to my insurance company and say I hit pothole. I told her no because that would be a lie.
BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-04
- VIN: 5NPLS4AG6NH
- Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: My 2022 Hyundai Elantra SEL's rear parking camera, rear cross traffic warning and Forward colliion warning systems have stopped working a couple of days back. I have checked online for any resolution, and it appears I am not the only one facing these issues. There are a good number of drivers who have reported similar issues. Hyundai has not issued an recall/fix for these issues and the dealer is unable to tell me if the issue is covered under warranty (I have about 45k miles on my car), unless I pay $220 per issue to diagnose first. That will get me to near $660 before I know anything about how to fix it. I would appreciate if you can please investigate these issues in 2022 Elantra SEL.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-19
- VIN: KMHLM4AJ9NU
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: Issue: manually setting cruise control to current speed (say 55mph) sets the cruise to 110mph . This has happened more than 10 times in 2 years of my ownership. This happens randomly and not possible to reproduced on-command. The dealers have refused to note this info and send it to Hyundai for investigation. Car accelerating to 110mph all of a sudden while you expect it to stay at your current speed can make one loose control of the vehicle, drive off the road if this happens near a sharp bend and potentially hitting other cars. This issue has definitely put the safety of me and other were put at risk. I believe this is a software issue and the dealers cant diagnose this on the spot. Hyundai does not seem to collect such non-reproducible complaints on their end which is really irresponsible.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-15
- VIN: KMHLM4AG5NU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The horn has malfunctioned. It stopped working today for the first 10-15 minutes of my driving and this poses as a safety concern as I was not able to communicate with other drivers. After 15 minutes the horn started picking up but it sounded faint. It does not sound nearly as loud or the same sound. I am worried the horn will stop working again. It is not making the same noises it usually does. Currently there are no warning lights on the dash regarding this. I am also seeing in social media communities that other Elantra drivers are facing the exact same issue and this poses a safety concern. If the horn stops working while driving in the highway or even local roads and we are unable to connivance with drivers it can cause or fail to prevent accidents.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-03

Some Soy based coating that Hyundai uses is delicious to rabbits, then they partially chew through the wire, resulting in power and transmission issues during operation, including revving engine, failure to change gears, and unable to reverse. These wires need better protection as being chewed on causes a safety issue while driving before a check engine light comes on.

You've got yourself a great car! It's got good mileage, great handling, and plenty of safety and convenience features. It's awesome to hear that after 18 months, it's still running well with no issues. Plus, you're getting 40+ mpg in mixed driving, which is fantastic!

Great car to drive! It's amazing how this car has a luxurious feel while being so affordable.

I'm talking about the N Line 1.6 Turbo. Coming from a variety of sports cars, including BMWs, Camaros, and other types of cars, this is the first time I have laid eyes on a Hyundai, and I have to say that I'm really impressed. The N Line has surpassed all my expectations. I came across this car by coincidence while shopping for an SUV for my wife. I took it for a test drive and ended up buying it for myself. For the price, this car is beyond great. It handles great, has great response, and is tough to beat on the street. Comparing this car to the ones I've had before, I dare to say that this car is at the level of a BMW and even more fun to drive.

I'm so glad I bought my Shimmering Silver Pearl 2022 Hyundai Elantra! I had ordered a Ford Maverick Hybrid almost 7 months ago (and I'm still waiting for it to be built), but I realized that the Elantra actually has better features and gas mileage for a better price.

Very helpful bells and whistles. The seats are comfortable and the car drives smoothly.

I have received more compliments on my Lava Orange N line than any of my previous cars. Although I find the speed to be a bit slow for a car with 200 horsepower, it still looks good and is comfortable enough. The DCT is my biggest complaint, as I find it jerky and slow. However, if you do not mind the shifting and speed, you might like it. I suggest test driving it before making a purchase. Other than the DCT, everything else is acceptable. There is a lot of value in this car. It's worth noting that the last two Hyundais I have owned have changed my mind about the brand, and unfortunately, this N line will be my last Hyundai. By the way, I had a R Spec Veloster a few years ago with the same engine as the N line, but it had a manual 6 speed. Although the seats were not comfortable, it was much faster than the N line. Lastly, I have noticed that Hyundai's paint jobs are not up to par. It seems they do not do a great job at the factory.

The car, which is less than two years old, had a non-working horn that required repair. Unfortunately, the same issue persisted even after two weeks.

Hyundai Elantra models are known to have engine malfunctions and self-destruction issues. Despite maintaining my 2016 Elantra and getting regular oil changes every 3k miles, the engine malfunctioned and caused a hole in the block. Unfortunately, corporate Hyundai declined warranty repair, citing maintenance neglect. However, I am confident that my case warrants a recall, as engine failure is a common issue with these models. I will continue to pursue this issue until Hyundai takes responsibility and fixes the problem. With 88,009 miles on the car, it is unacceptable to be denied a repair based on an unfair excuse.
