2002 Hyundai Elantra problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).

First generation (J1; 1990)

The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.

It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.

The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Common 2002 Hyundai Elantra problems

The 2002 Hyundai Elantra is known for several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the engine, where the car revs up and down from 2 to 4 RPMs when started. This problem can be caused by various factors, including a faulty throttle position sensor (TPS), which was replaced in this case, but other issues such as vacuum leaks, faulty mass air flow sensors, or even a worn-out timing belt could also be the culprit.

Another common problem with the 2002 Hyundai Elantra is related to the transmission. Some owners have reported issues with the transmission not shifting properly, which can be caused by failed speed sensors or other internal transmission problems. This issue can lead to a check engine light (CEL) and can affect the car's overall drivability.

The 2002 Hyundai Elantra also has reported problems with the fuel system. Some owners have reported issues with the fuel pump, which can lead to starting problems, stalling, or poor acceleration. In some cases, replacing the fuel pump assembly rather than just the pump itself may be necessary to resolve this issue.

Additionally, the 2002 Hyundai Elantra has been reported to have issues with the airbags and seat belts. Some owners have reported that the airbag light stays on, which can be caused by various issues, including faulty sensors or wiring problems. This issue can affect the car's safety and should be addressed promptly.

Finally, the 2002 Hyundai Elantra has been reported to have issues with the paint quality. Some owners have reported that the paint peels off in large sheets over time, which can be caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet light and the breakdown of the paint's molecular structure. This issue can affect the car's appearance and may require repainting to resolve.

In summary, the 2002 Hyundai Elantra has several common problems that owners have reported, including engine issues, transmission problems, fuel system issues, airbag and seat belt problems, and paint quality issues. These issues can affect the car's drivability, safety, and appearance, and may require professional repair or replacement of certain parts to resolve.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-09-03
  • VIN: KMHDN55D02U
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND THE MOMENT I TRIED TO STOP AT THE TRAFFIC STOP SIGN THE LOWER ARM CONTROL FROM THE DRIVER SIDE BROKE AND THE WHEEL BROKE AND THE CAR SLID. THANKS GOD IT WAS AT NIGHT AND NO CARS WERE THERE. I REMEMBER THE NIGHT BEFORE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND NOTHING HAPPENED. I CALLED MY INSURANCE AND THEY SENT ME A TOWING TRUCK TO MOVE THE CAR. I DIDN'T REPAIR THE CAR BECAUSE IT WAS A BIG MESS. I TOOK SOME PICTURES OF IT AND THE TOWING COMPANY GUY ALSO. I REMEMBER I WENT TO HYUNDAI DEALER AND I WAS LOOKING FOR A PART THEIR AND THEY TOOK MY VIN NUMBER TO CHECK FOR THE PART BUT NEVER TOLD ME ABOUT THE RECALL. CAN HYUNDAI COMPANY GIVE ME SOME MONEY BACK THAT I SPENT FOR TOWING AND LOOSING MY CAR BECAUSE OF THIS INCIDENT. I EVEN PAID FOR THE CAR REGISTRATION WEEKS BEFORE. *TR

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-01-29
  • VIN: KMHDN45D12U
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: WHEN PUMPING GAS I CAN ONLY PUMP ABOUT $1.50 WORTH OF GAS AT A TIME BEFORE IT STARTS COMING BACK OUT AND SPILLING EVERYWHERE. I HAVE TRIED PUMPING GAS WITH THE CAR ON, NOT SAFE I KNOW, AND IT STILL ONLY TAKES ABOUT $1.50 BEFORE IT COMES BACK OUT. I HAVE SPOKEN TO MULTIPLE ELANTRA OWNERS AND THEY ALL HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. IT TAKES ABOUT 20 MINUTES TO FILL UP. THE MORE GAS YOU GET IN YOUR TANK, THE LESS YOU CAN PUMP. FROM THE RESEARCH I HAVE DONE ONLINE IT'S THAT THE EVAP CANISTOR HAS FAILED AND IT'S PUSHING CHARCOAL THRU THE FUEL LINES. WHAT IF THAT GETS INTO THE FUEL TANK AND THE PUMP SUCKS IT UP? DON'T THINK THAT WOULD BE A GOOD THING. BUT THE GAS THAT COMES OUT IS STARTING TO EAT AWAY THE PAINT BECAUSE IT DOES IT MULTIPLE TIMES EACH TIME I'M REFUELING. MY VEHICLE HAS HIGH MILES BUT ALOT OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE THIS ISSUE SAY THEY HAVE BELOW 100K MILES.

MY MECHANIC AND I WERE COMPLEXED, BUT AFTER RESEARCH I FOUND THIS PROBLEM EXIST AND RECALLS ISSUED. AFTER CONTACTING HYUNDA THEY SAID THIS VEHICLE VIN# WAS NOT COVERED. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. SOMETHING IN THE RECORDS OF THIS CAR MUST BE IN ERROR.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-10-28
  • VIN: KMHDN55D72U
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: ON OCTOBER 28TH, 2016 THE LOWER, DRIVER'S SIDE, FRONT CONTROL ARM DISINTEGRATED WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING HER ELANTRA IN A PARKING LOT. SHE WAS MAKING A RIGHT TURN TO LEAVE THE LOT WHEN SHE LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR AS IT MADE A "TERRIBLE GRINDING NOISE." THE NEXT DAY I REMOVED THE WHEEL AND DISCOVERED THE CONTROL ARM WAS TORN IN TWO SECTIONS AND BADLY CORRODED. I WENT TO TWO HYUNDAI DEALERS TO TRACK DOWN A NEW PART. NEITHER DEALER MENTIONED THE FACT THAT THIS MODEL HYUNDAI HAD BEEN RECALLED FOR PRECISELY THIS PROBLEM. WHEN I LEARNED OF THIS PROBLEM I CONTACTED HYUNDAI MOTORS. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE RECALL ONLY APPLIED TO VEHICLES PURCHASED OR REGISTERED IN THE SO-CALLED "SALT BELT" STATES. MY WIFE BOUGHT THIS CAR NEW IN COLORADO AND HAS NEVER DRIVEN IT IN THE "SALT BELT." YET IT SUFFERED THE SAME CORROSION AND FAILURE AS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL BULLETIN. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS FAILURE BECAUSE THE CORROSION IS INSIDE THE CONTROL ARM AND CANNOT BE DETECTED BY A NORMAL VISUAL INSPECTION. I SUSPECT THAT THE FAILURE THAT SHOWED UP YEARS AGO IN THE "SALT BELT" CARS IS NOW APPEARING IN OLDER CARS IN OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. HYUNDAI APPARENTLY DOES NOT GIVE A [XXX]. I SUGGEST THE NHSTA IMPOSE A NATIONWIDE MANDATORY RECALL OF THESE VEHICLES. IF IT OCCURRED AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THIS FAILURE WOULD RESULT IN IMMEDIATE LOSS OF CONTROL, RESULTING IN SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH FOR PASSENGERS IN THE CAR. THIS VEHICLE IS A ONE OWNER CAR THAT WAS GARAGED ALL ITS LIFE. IT WAS REGULARLY SERVICED BY A HYUNDAI DEALER. IT SHOWS NO SIGNS OF EXCESSIVE CORROSION IN ANY OTHER AREA OR PART. I AM OUTRAGED THAT HYUNDAI CHOSE TO LIMIT THE RECALL OF THESE VEHICLES TO SELECT STATES. THIS INCIDENT CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES THE PROBLEM IS NOT LIMITED TO VEHICLES EXPOSED TO CORROSIVE CHEMICALS. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-05-09
  • VIN: KMHDN45D72U
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: MY VEHICLE HAS CONTROL ARM RUST AND PERFORATIONS IN THE SUBFRAME, COVERED UNDER AN EXISTING RECALL. HYUNDAI HAS ADMITTED THAT THE PARTS ARE COVERED UNDER THE RECALL, BUT STATES THAT THEY ARE UNABLE TO REPLACE THE SUBFRAME AND CONTROL ARMS DUE TO RUST DAMAGE ON THE FRAME ITSELF. REPLACING THE DAMAGED PORTIONS OF THE FRAME WILL COST WELL OVER THE PRICE OF THE VEHICLE. IF THE SUBFRAME DID NOT HAVE TO BE REPLACED, THE FRAME WOULD LIKELY HOLD FOR SOME TIME AND NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT IN THE NEAR FUTURE. THE FRAME DAMAGE IS ONLY AN IMMEDIATE ISSUE BECAUSE THE RECALL REPAIR NEEDS TO BE DONE. HYUNDAI HAS OFFERED ME TO EITHER REPLACE THE FRAME DAMAGE AT MY OWN EXPENSE SO THEY CAN COMPLETE THE RECALL REPAIR, OR TAKE A BUYOUT EQUAL TO THE KELLY BLUE BOOK VALUE OF THE VEHICLE. OTHER COMPENSATION SUCH AS RENTAL FEES WAS REFUSED. IT HAS TAKEN THEM ~25 DAYS SINCE RECEIVING THE VEHICLE TO MAKE THIS OFFER.

  • Summary: CAR RECALLED FOR "SALT BELT CORROSION" REPAIRS IN 2002. ORIGINAL OWNER SOLD CAR BACK TO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. REPAIRS WERE NEVER DONE.WHEN I BOUGHT THIS USED HYUNDAI ELANTRA IN LATE 2002, IT HAD LESS THAN 13K MILES ON ITS ODOMETER. IT WAS SERVICED AT A 2ND HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP UNTIL 2012, WHEN ITS 10 YR/ 100 K MI WARRANTY EXPIRED. TODAY, EVEN THOUGH IT STILL HAS < 100 K ON ITS ODOMETER, THE ENTIRE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE IS SO BADLY RUSTED THAT I'VE BEEN TOLD BY TWO DIFFERENT SOURCES THAT THE CORROSION ON THE UNDERSIDE IS SO BAD THAT, DURING A 50 MPH OR GREATER ACCIDENT, IT IS LIKELY THE ENTIRE INSIDE OF THE CAR COULD FALL ONTO THE HIGHWAY, WHILE IT KEPT MOVING FORWARD, DECAPITATING EVERYONE INSIDE. JPG IMAGES OF THE EXTENT OF THE CORROSION ON THIS VEHICLE ARE AVAILABLE AT: WWW.HYUNDAIDCM.COM/WEB/ACTIVITYDETAILS.ASPX?ACTIVITYID=7738650-4. MY HYUNDAI IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE BECAUSE HYUNDAI NEVER PERFORMED THE MANDATED NHTSA SERVICE IN 2002. PLEASE TAKE MY CASE ON.. I'VE FILLED OUT THE WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN? EVER SINCE THIS INSPECTION, HYUNDAI AMERICA HAS OFFERED TO PAY ME $ 1K TO "TAKE MY CAR AWAY". WHEN I ASKED THEM WHY NOT $ 3K (IT'S HIGH KELLY BLUE BOOK VALUE), THEY INFORMED ME IT "WAS A RUST BUCKET".YES, MY ELANTRA IS A "RUST BUCKET", BUT ONLY BECAUSE OF HYUNDAI'S FAILURE TO PERFORM THE REPAIRS REQUIRED IN NHTSA'S 2002 RECALL, THAT NEVER GOT DONE.

Negative 2002 Hyundai Elantra car reviews

  1. Floyd Zboncak 2024-07-08

I purchased this car when it had 66,532 miles on it. Unfortunately, I am currently unable to drive it due to a cracked high pressure power steering hose that can only be purchased as a dealer part. The cost of the hose is quite high, ranging from $189.00 to $205.00. While at the mechanics that the car dealership I purchased the car at recommended, they found 5 other issues with the evap system during a computer diagnostic. The check engine light had come on just before the power steering hose blew. Additionally, just 3 weeks prior, I had to replace both headlamp bulbs within 3 days of each other at a cost of $36.89. Overall, I am disappointed with my experience with this car so far.

After graduating, I was on the lookout for a new car but couldn't find anything as good as the Elantra. It's very comfortable and has a nice interior design. However, when my parents wanted to switch to an MPV, I didn't need to think for long. I just chose the Elantra as my first car. As an owner, it has served me well for almost 3 years and I have driven it for more than 160K KM. I have maintained it well and it has never given me any major problems. Even my friends have complimented the smooth engine and lack of noise. I am a die-hard fan of the Elantra and will continue to keep it until the 2011 model arrives in Malaysia.

I'm so glad I got this car! I used to own a 01 Hyundai Accent, but it was too small for me since I'm 6'1

I researched cars for several weeks and test drove several, including a Mitsubishi Galant. I have to say, the Elantra GT really impressed me on paper and even more so after the test drive. It felt better than cars that cost thousands of dollars more. Inside the car feels luxurious, and I think the styling is terrific (many have noted it looks like a Saab). I highly recommend test driving this car-- you won't be disappointed. I previously drove an Eclipse (which cost $3000 more) and gladly traded it in.

I'm so glad I found my perfect car! The car-buying process can be daunting, but after some research and dealership visits, I stumbled upon the Hyundai Elantra GT. From the moment I sat in it, I knew it was the one for me. After reading some great reviews online, my fiance and I went back to the dealership to negotiate a price. The salesperson was very friendly and we were able to agree on a price in the low $14s. I'm absolutely in love with my new car and can't believe it's not more popular on the road!

Great machine for the buck! This weekend at a local dealer, a few of the basic models can be had for $4,000 off the MSRP. What an incredible bargain!
