2000 Hyundai Elantra problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

- Engine Issues:
- One of the most common problems reported by owners of the Hyundai Elantra 2000 is related to engine failures and stalling. These issues can be caused by a faulty crankshaft angle sensor, affecting models from 1992 to 1994 and 2000 to 2016. The average mileage for this problem is around 86,768 miles. Additionally, a failed canister purge valve leading to a check engine light has been reported by 117 owners, affecting models between 2000 and 2017.
- Engine problems in the 2013 model year have been particularly prevalent, with complaints about ticking noises, engine failures, and rough running. This model year has over 500 complaints, indicating a significant issue with engine reliability.

- VIN: KMHJW35F0YU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),ENGINE
- Summary: AT 65 MPH, ON THE HIGHWAY, THE ENGINE STALLED, ALL LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CAME ON AND I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A NEARBY OFF RAMP. FIVE WEEKS LATER, THE ENGINE WILL START, AND THE ONL YLIGHT ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL IS THE AIR BAG LIGHT WHICH HAS NEVER GONE OFF SINCE THE STALLING EPISODE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS COME ON FOR A YEAR, WITH THE SAME MULTIPLE MISFIRE READINGS (300 AND 301). I HAVE HAD MECHANICS MAKE ALMOST EVERY POSSIBLE REPLACEMENT IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS. ASPARK PLUGS AND WIRES WERE REPLACED TWICE IN A FOUR MONTH PERIOD WITH AN UNKNOWN FACTOR BURNING THEM OUT. THERE ARE NUMEROUS ACCOUNTS OF BOTH OF THESE PROBLEMS REPORTED ON RELIABLE INTERNET SITES, ESPECIALLY THE ENGINE STALLING WHICH IS ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS. THIS VEHICLE IS REPORTED TO HAVE HAD BOTH RECALL REPAIRS COMPLETED IN 2005. WITH THOUSANDS OF NEWER ELANTRA MODELS REPORTING THE INTERMITTENT ENGINE STALLING, HYUNDAI SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO THOROUGHLY INVESTIGATE AND ISSUE A RECALL. NOTE: I AM UNABLE TO CHECK THE FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM IN THE LIST ABOVE. PERHAPS ONLY THREE ITEMS CAN BE CHECKED, I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM WITH ELANTRAS IS ALSO TIED TO THIS SYSTEM.

- Summary: MY WIFE PURCHASED A 2000 HYUNDAI ELANTRA VIN#[XXX] FROM BROWN HYUNDAI OF TOLEDO OH. ON 4/18/05 SHE BROUGHT THE CAR TO BROWN HYUNDAI AT 63,000 MILES DUE TO A NOTICE ABOUT POSSIBLE FOR CRACKS FORMING IN THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD, SPECIFICALLY TSB 05-01-001. NO REPLACEMENT WAS MADE AT THAT TIME. RECENTLY, I NOTICED AN EXISTING CRACK IN THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND PERFORMED SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET ABOUT THE PROBLEM. I AM SURE YOU ARE AWARE HOW COMMON OF A PROBLEM THIS HAS BEEN AS THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON VARIOUS AUTOMOTIVE FORUMS, THE NHTSA, AND VARIOUS STATES' DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER PROTECTION. I HAD THE VEHICLE RECENTLY (10/08/12) INSPECTED AT VOSS HYUNDAI OF CENTERVILLE OH WHO HAS CONFIRMED THE EXISTING CRACK. AT 125,000 MILES THE CAR IS PASSED ITS POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. SIMPLY BECAUSE IT WAS NOT VISIBLY EVIDENT IN 2005 DOES NOT MEAN THE MANIFOLD WAS UP TO HYUNDAI'S QUALITY STANDARDS. EXHAUST MANIFOLDS ARE CAST IRON OR STEEL AND ARE NOT A MOVING PART SUBJECT TO FRICTION. THEREFORE, I CANNOT ACCEPT THAT THIS CURRENT PROBLEM IS THE RESULT OF STANDARD OR EXPECTED WEAR-AND-TEAR BUT CAUSED BY A PRE-EXISTING DEFECT THAT HAS SURFACED OVER TIME. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

SOMETIMES GAS SPILLS FROM TANK WITHOUT THE TANK BEING FULLY FILLED BECAUSE THE GAS RISES, THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND HYUNDAI MUST CORRECT THIS. IT WILL TAKE ABOUT 15 TO 20 MINUTES TO FILL YOUR TANK. I THINK THIS IS A CONCERN FOR A RECALL. THE OTHER PROBLEM IS THAT YOU TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP SPEND A GOOD AMOUNT OF MONEY AND THE PROBLEM IS NOT FIXED. IM ASKING YOU TO MAKE HYUNDAI LIABLE FOR THIS. IT IS NOT ONLY ANNOYING BUT A SAFETY ISSUE. SEE WHY SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM AND YOU WILL BE THE JUDGE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. *TR

This stylish car has been through 2 Canadian winters, and it hasn't had a single issue. In my opinion, it should have been awarded first place in the Edmunds 2000 Economy Car Comparison. I test drove the other two cars that were ranked higher, but they just don't compare. The price is a pure bargain for what you get: class-leading horsepower, a killer CD sound system, power everything, comfort, style, and an engine that can really move! In my opinion, this is by far the best 2000 economy car around, and the redesigned 2001 Elantra proves to be even better. Way to go, Hyundai!
-
You've driven over 32000 miles in this car since Feb. 2000. That's impressive! It's great to hear that you haven't had any major problems with it. With 140hp, it's a powerful small vehicle that can keep up with the big guys. It sounds like you got a great deal for your money. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!
-
Your car has been very reliable for your needs, even with very little mileage (26,000 in the past over 10 yrs.). Other than some field mice chewing wiring, the only repair you've had to deal with was a valve failure in the emissions system when the car reached the age of 10 years, which was a $240 job. Additionally, the cover came off the catalytic converter awhile back, but both the dealer and your local mechanic assure you it's okay as long as you don't park on long grass, which you wouldn't do anyway even with the cover on. You seem to get way better mileage claims and you only use it for around town errands (obviously by the low mileage). It's understandable that you hate to give it up.
-
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I think your Elantra is amazing! It's so impressive that you've put almost 80,000 miles on it and it's still running so well. It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with it and that it's been so reliable. It sounds like you've really gotten your money's worth, especially considering that you only paid around $10k for it. And it's wonderful to see how far Hyundai has come. Thanks for sharing your story!
-
We've had the car for almost 2 years and it has been a very dependable car! Although the gas mileage isn't the greatest, it has enough room for us to travel around in. The pick-up is a little lacking on on-ramps to highways, so having more horsepower would be an advantage.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2000 Elantra. It was such a great car! I bought it used with around 58k miles on it and only had to replace the alternator, battery, and the front left wheel bearing. It ran smoothly and handled well, although it was a bit sluggish to shift under heavy acceleration. Unfortunately, I was in an accident in 1/05 with 86k miles on it, when someone made a left turn in front of me. The front end was pretty damaged, but thankfully the airbags worked great! Overall, it was a nice ride and comparable in smoothness to some smaller cars. I just wanted to mention that the wheel bearings can be a bit tricky to replace on your own and the old filter isn't the easiest to access. Thanks for listening!

In 2003, I purchased my Elantra with only 38,000 miles on it for a great price of $5,000. Although I faced some challenges during the five years of ownership, including replacing the engine due to a bad thermostat, three different water pumps, power steering pump, alternator, and three power windows that stopped working, I made the decision to prioritize my expenses and only fixed the driver's side door. Despite the decline in gas mileage from 34 to around 20, I am confident in my ability to make informed decisions when it comes to car ownership.

Firstly, I must say that the reliability of this car is truly amazing. I have driven it for over 43,000 miles and have not experienced any major problems. I did have to replace a sensor that was part of a recall, and the regulator for my driver side window stopped working, which required two trips to the dealership. Overall, it is a nice car, but it may not hold your interest for long. If you are purchasing this car based on its affordability, then it is a good buy. However, if you can afford a better car, I would recommend looking elsewhere to ensure your satisfaction.

I bought a used Excell in '93 and wasn't too happy with the Hyundai brand. However, when they introduced their new warranty, I decided to give it a chance. I have been pleasantly surprised! Although I did experience a total loss of electrical power, the issue was resolved with a new alternator and battery (which were covered). Now, I'm running smoothly. I never thought that $12,150 could take me so far!
Brown Schuppe 2024-03-24
The resale value of this vehicle depreciates significantly after only three years. Additionally, the service department is known to be quite expensive and not up to par. Based on my experience, I would not consider purchasing another Hyundai in the future.
