2004 Hyundai Elantra problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Common 2004 Hyundai Elantra problems
The Hyundai Elantra 2004 is known to have several common problems, primarily related to its transmission, engine, and electrical system.
One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the transmission, specifically the failure of speed sensors, which can cause the transmission to have trouble shifting or even result in a check engine light (CEL) illuminating on the dashboard. This issue can lead to a frustrating driving experience and potentially expensive repairs if not addressed promptly.
Another common problem with the Hyundai Elantra 2004 is engine stalling or jerking, particularly when the vehicle is crossing between 20-30 mph. This issue can be caused by various factors, including faulty spark plugs, wires, or even a malfunctioning throttle position sensor. In some cases, it may also be related to the timing belt, especially if it has not been replaced as recommended by the manufacturer.
The electrical system of the Hyundai Elantra 2004 can also present some issues, with the check engine light being a common symptom. In some cases, the CEL may be triggered by faulty sensors or wiring, leading to false readings and potentially unnecessary repairs.

- Summary: SRS (AIRBAG) SERVICE REMINDER INDICATOR CAME ON. I WENT TO AN AUTO PARTS STORE AND THEY RAN AN OBDII REPORT ON A BOSCH SCANNER. A B1448 OC (OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION) - PASSENGER SENSOR MAT DEFECT CAME BACK. THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM THAT THE 2006-2008 HYUNDAI SONATAS HAVE A RECALL ON. THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR, TO DETECT A CHILD SEAT OR ADULT IN THE SEAT, MAY RECOGNIZE A SMALL ADULT AS A CHILD SEAT. IF THIS HAPPENS AND THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG IS DEACTIVATED, THE RISK OF INJURY IN A CRASH MAY BE INCREASED. I WENT TO HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA HEADQUARTERS IN FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CALIFORNIA AT 3:45 ON JANUARY 17, 2019 AND LEFT MY CONTACT INFORMATION ON A CARD AT THE FRONT DESK REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD BE CONTACTED BUT TO DATE HAVE HAD NO REPLY FROM HMA. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2004 Hyundai Elantra.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI CARIBBEAN-PUERTO RICO
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN ADVANCED AIR BAG SYSTEM. THE OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (OCS) INSTALLED IN THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT OF THE VEHICLE MAY MISCLASSIFY A CHILD RESTRAINT SEAT (CRS) AS AN ADULT. THIS MAY OCCUR IF THE CRS IS INSTALLED AFTER AN ADULT HAS BEEN SEATED IN THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT. IF THERE HAS NOT BEEN A 'KEY ON' ' KEY OFF' CYCLE WITH THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SEAT EMPTY PRIOR TO INSTALLATION OF THE CRS.
- Consequence: THE POSSIBILITY OF MISCLASSIFICATION OF A CRS AS AN ADULT MAY ALLOW THE RIGHT FRONT AIRBAG OR SIDE IMPACT AIRBAG TO DEPLOY IN A CRASH AND COULD RESULT IN INJURY TO THE RIGHT FRONT OCCUPANT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE VEHICLE'S OCS ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) TO REMOVE THE FEATURE THAT MAY CAUSE THE CRS TO BE RECOGNIZED AS AN ADULT. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 15, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI OF PUERTO RICO AT 1-800-981-0188.

I purchased my Elantra just over 5 years ago and it's still going strong. I opted for the extended 100,000mi/10yr bumper to bumper warranty and it has been a great investment. Although I've had to replace my air bag sensors (both driver and passenger) and Kenwood CD player, as well as my headlights a few times, I didn't have to pay for any of it! I leave my headlights on all the time, so burning them out is to be expected. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my Elantra. I drive between 20 and 30 miles every day on average and get great mileage. While maintenance can be a little pricey (ouch, just had my 60k service today!), the dealership has always been reliable and the service department staff are friendly and welcoming.
-
Hey there! I wanted to share that I recently purchased an Elantra GT last month. I had looked at the Civic and the Sentra, but they were both priced 1,500 to 2,500 dollars more. I must say, the fit and finish on my car is excellent, and I have yet to find any defects inside or out.
-
I did a lot of research before buying my Elantra because I wanted a problem-free car (which can be a real challenge when buying used). The '04 Elantra is highly rated by many car reviewers. Having owned mine for 6 months and driven 12,000 miles, I just wanted to share how wonderful owning this car has been. I bought this car with 52K miles on it. It is a loaded 5-speed GT Hatch. I really like the styling both inside and out. I have not had a single mechanical problem. I have only had to replace one headlight bulb and it was easy to do. If the biggest complaint about a car is changing headlight bulbs, then common sense told me it was a smart car to buy. And the gas mileage? 35 MPG combined; that's 450 miles before the fuel light comes on! It was worth every dollar I paid.
-
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my GT after owning it for 4 years. I've gone through three sets of tires (all good brands), had the brakes replaced once, and the front end aligned twice, all within the first 40k miles! While the car isn't the best in the snow, I've had no other real issues. It still looks great and handles wonderfully. On my daily commute (city and highway driving), I average 28mpg. I'm currently debating whether to buy a 2009 or switch to a Civic/Corolla. What do you think?
-
This car is amazing! It has great handling and terrific gas mileage. I have never been more satisfied with a car purchase. When compared to other 5 door hatchbacks with all the bells and whistles (leather, moonroof, cd, front bra, front and side airbag protection), you will not find a better deal or value. While my friends pay over $350-$450 per month for their gas-guzzlers and clothed-autos, I feel wonderful about my decision to test drive the Elantra GT hatchback. I fell in love with this car as soon as I opened the driver's side door.

Hi there! I wanted to share my recent experience with my Hyundai. Although my current mileage is only 10,000, I had to stop by the repair center to fix my brake sound and steering wheel vibrating. Unfortunately, the cost was around $600, which was not covered by the warranty. I was a bit surprised by the cost, but overall the service was good. While I may not purchase another Hyundai in the future, I understand that every car brand has its own unique challenges. Thanks for listening!

This car is decent, but not exceptional, particularly when it comes to the materials used. Unfortunately, the car has a number of squeaks, rattles, and buzzes that the dealer has been unwilling to address. On the plus side, the car handles well and the 4-wheel discs work great. Hello! I just wanted to share my thoughts on this car. Overall, I think it's a great value for the money. It has a lot of features and refinement that make it stand out. Of course, there are a few things to keep in mind. The styling is a bit bland, both inside and out. Additionally, the fuel economy isn't quite as good as some other commuter cars like the Civic and Corolla. Finally, while the leather seats are nice, they could be a bit more comfortable. However, the powertrain and build quality are both top-notch. The car is smooth, tight, powerful, and quiet, and it gives the driver the feeling that it will last for a very long time. All in all, I would definitely recommend this car to anyone who values quality and affordability. Thanks for reading!

I bought this vehicle used in August of 08 to replace a wrecked vehicle. It's been a fun ride so far! I'm happy to report that I average 28 miles to the gallon. I have had a couple of issues with the headlights, but they were easily replaced. Unfortunately, I have had some trouble with the brakes, both the rear brakes and the E brake. I have found that Hyundai has not been very helpful with repairs.
