2007 Hyundai Elantra problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-03
- VIN: KMHDU46D07U
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Over two weeks ago, I contacted Rick Case Hyundai in Plantation, FL, via the web and tried to schedule a recall service. The website came back stating there was no recall for my VIN. I went to the NHTSA website and put in my VIN, and it stated there was one recall for that VIN. I am not sure which website is wrong, but since then, all Rick Case has been interested in is selling me a car. The service department completely ignored my inquiry, and the sales department has been responding ever since. On top of that, they have been blatantly ignoring my emails in their attempt to sell me a car. This is not my industry, so I will not speculate who could be wrong. I am saying that someone should have reached out to me and at least tried to help instead of sending me emails to help me buy a new car. I have several screenshots that I have attached.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-29
- VIN: KMHDU46D47U
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Problem is associated with NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V061000. This is for the ABS braking system catching fire. The recall partially addressed the issue, but not fully. The manufacturer installed a fix that addresses the issue while the car is turned off, however the problem still exists while the vehicle is powered on. Shortly after starting the vehicle and driving approximately 3 miles, smoke started billowing out from under the hood and side of the car. The ABS light came on at the same time. The braking function was impaired and sporadic. The vehicle was stopped, turned off and the smoking subsided. After about 15 minutes the vehicle was able to make it back to the owners residence, but the ABS light remained on. Later, the ABS pump was removed, revealing a hole burned in the back of the unit. Repairs were performed by the owner, consisting of replacing the ABS pump with a salvage part, replacing two ABS fuses and bleeding the brake system. After repairs the warning lights are off and the vehicle performs as normal. No inspections have been done by any mechanics or others. The vehicle easily could have caught fire and lead to an accident had the issue occurred outside a residential area traveling at higher speed.

- Summary: I felt as if I couldn’t control the car on the road, making a noise especially when hit the slightest bump. I had someone follow me to repair station to drop off the car. The mechanic said there was a lot of rust on frame crossbars, one place totally broke off. He said to check with Hyundai about the rust of the frame and not to drive the car. It is frightening to know that the frame parts rusted and broke like that. I have never had that happen to a car before. It is not safe to drive and when I called Hyundai they said there were no recalls with rust and frame breakage in my car. Other Hyundai’s were recalled for this very thing, I’m confused why mine has not been recalled for this safety issue.

2007 Hyundai Elantra recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2007 Hyundai Elantra.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
- Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2007-2010 Elantra and 2009-2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. On February 21, 2020 Hyundai expanded the recall to include 46,425 model year 2007-2008 Entourage and 2007 Santa Fe vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.
- Consequence: An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the car is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will install a relay in the vehicle's main junction box to prevent the risk of an ABS short-circuit while the car is turned off, free of charge. The recall began April 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 188.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
- Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
- Summary: HYUNDAI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 ELANTRA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 14, 2006, THROUGH AUGUST 29, 2007. THE DRIVER'S SEAT TRACK POSITION SENSOR DETERMINES THE SEAT'S FORE AND AFT POSITION AND ALLOWS THE DRIVER'S FRONTAL AIR BAG TO DEPLOY AT THE PRESSURE APPROPRIATE FOR THAT SEATING POSITION, WITH A LOWER PRESSURE DEPLOYMENT IN THE MOST FORWARD SEATING POSITIONS. THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE MAY RECEIVE AN UNSTABLE ELECTRICAL SIGNAL FROM THE SEAT TRACK POSITION SENSOR SUCH THAT, IN A CRASH THAT REQUIRES DRIVER FRONTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT, THE DRIVER'S AIRBAG MAY DEPLOY AT THE HIGHER PRESSURE THAN INTENDED IF THE SEAT WAS POSITION IN ONE OF THE FORWARD POSITIONS IN WHICH A LOWER PRESSURE DEPLOYMENT IS INTENDED.
- Consequence: A HIGHER PRESSURE DEPLOYMENT THAN INTENDED INCREASES THE RISK OF INJURY RESULTING FROM AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTING TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI'S CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
- Summary: HYUNDAI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007-2009 ELANTRA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 14, 2006, THROUGH NOVEMBER 1, 2008. THE FRONT PASSENGER SEATS IN THE VEHICLES CONTAIN A WEIGHT SENSOR DESIGNED TO DEACTIVATE THE RIGHT FRONTAL AIRBAG WHEN OCCUPANTS OF CERTAIN WEIGHTS OCCUPY THE SEAT. THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR FOR THE WEIGHT SENSOR IS LOCATED UNDER THE CENTER CONSOLE, BETWEEN THE FRONT SEATS. UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES THE CONNECTOR COULD BECOME CONTAMINATED AND MALFUNCTION SUCH THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG WILL DEPLOY REGARDLESS OF THE WEIGHT OF THE OCCUPANT.
- Consequence: THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG COULD DEPLOY IN CRASHES IN WHICH IT SHOULD NOT DEPLOY, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT FROM THE DEPLOYED AIR BAG.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A PROTECTIVE COVER OVER THE WEIGHT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM CONNECTOR TO PREVENT CONTAMINATION. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTING TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI'S CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 3,011 MODEL YEAR 2005-2007 ELANTRA, TUCSON, SONATA, AZERA AND ACCENT VEHICLES. A MALFUNCTIONING STOP LAMP SWITCH MAY CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO FAIL TO ILLUMINATE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED OR MAY CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO REMAIN ILLUMINATED WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS RELEASED. A DEFECTIVE STOP LAMP SWITCH MAY ALSO AFFECT THE OPERATION OF THE BRAKE-TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK FEATURE SO THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BE SHIFT OUT OF THE "PARK" POSITION. IT MAY ALSO CAUSE THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) MALFUNCTION LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE, AND IT MAY NOT DEACTIVATE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED.
- Consequence: ANY OF THESE MALFUNCTIONS COULD LEAD TO A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STOP LAMP SWITCH FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 2, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI OF PUERTO RICO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-787-999-4310.

THE STOP LAMP SWITCH IN THE AFFECTED VEHICLES MAY MALFUNCTION. A MALFUNCTIONING STOP LAMP SWITCH MAY CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO NOT ILLUMINATE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED OR MAY CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO REMAIN ILLUMINATED WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS RELEASED. A STOP LAMP SWITCH MALFUNCTION MAY ALSO AFFECT THE OPERATION OF THE BRAKE-TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK FEATURE SO THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BE SHIFTED OUT OF THE PARK POSITION. IT MAY ALSO CAUSE THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) MALFUNCTION LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE, AND IT MAY NOT DEACTIVATE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED.
- Consequence: ANY OF THESE MALFUNCTIONS, ALONE OR IN COMBINATION, MAY LEAD TO A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STOP LAMP SWITCH FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 29, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.
Negative 2007 Hyundai Elantra car reviews
Positive 2007 Hyundai Elantra car reviews
-
I bought this car with 42,000 miles on it because I needed a reliable vehicle for my 90-mile commute to work. Since then, I've taken great care of it by doing regular maintenance and oil changes every 5,000 miles. I even use Castrol synthetic blend to keep it running smoothly. The transmission is a 5-speed manual and has been trouble-free, except for replacing the clutch and changing the fluid at 300,000 miles. My mechanic even found a way to change the fluid, which made it shift better. I've replaced the timing belt kits, motor mounts, spark plugs and wiring, and even had the alternator rebuilt. Despite having to replace the transmission in June 2018, the car drives great again with a used one that had only 68,000 miles on it. I plan to keep driving this car until it can't go anymore, and I'm hoping to reach at least 500,000 miles!

I owned this car for a decade and it never gave me any trouble. Regular oil changes were the only maintenance it required. Despite being involved in an accident that bent the frame, the engine remained in good condition. However, the cost of repairing the frame exceeded the value of the car.

I visited the dealership to test drive several cars including the Nissan Versa and Sentra, Honda Civic, Mazda 3, and Scion tc. However, I fell in love with the 2007 Hyundai Elantra SE after test driving it. It was only the third manual car I had ever driven, but it was so easy to drive compared to the Acura I learned on. I got the hang of it in just 5 minutes and knew I had to have it. The car feels like a sports car and the interior is incredibly spacious and comfortable, making it feel more expensive than it actually was. I have been driving it for a month now, covering about 30 miles a day, and I never want to get out of it. The only downside is that the gas mileage drops to 32 mpg at speeds over 55 mph, so the actual highway mpg (at 70 mph) is lower.

The car has been great so far! It drives very smoothly and the handling is fantastic. Braking with this car feels very solid and controlled too; it doesn't dip much in the front. When the car idles, the engine is very quiet. The small dimensions of this car also make maneuvering in parking lots quite easy.

Our 2007 Hyundai Elantra Limited trim has been an exceptional car for the past 13 years, with only regular maintenance and minor repairs. Despite being written off by our insurance company due to a minor accident, it was still in excellent condition with no rust and could have easily lasted another 100,000 km. It was truly the most reliable car I have ever owned.

I purchased my 2007 Elantra brand new five years ago. Unfortunately, the car has experienced some issues, such as problems with the rack & pinion and the clock spring, and it seems to be falling apart. As a result, I am disappointed with my purchase and would not consider buying another Hyundai Elantra in the future.

I replaced my 2003 Elantra GT 5 door with a Mazda 3 after being in an accident where the driver's airbag failed to deploy. Despite contacting Hyundai about the issue, they did not take responsibility for the incident. While the Elantra did depreciate significantly in just 10 months, the insurance payout was disappointing. I ultimately chose the Mazda 3 as my replacement vehicle. It's unfortunate that Hyundai's standard airbags did not deploy when they should have. Thank you for considering my experience.

I absolutely loved my 2007 Elantra when I bought it certified used with only 35,000 miles in 2009. I have a long commute of 5 hours each week, and I've noticed that the car's suspension seems to age quickly, causing me to go through tires faster than on other vehicles. However, I accepted these issues until a recent late-night commute in rural MN, where the car started bucking and losing top gear. Unfortunately, I'm now unable to go more than 50mph without experiencing a new buck every 10-15 miles. While I had planned on driving this car into the ground, it seems that a transmission rebuild isn't worth it due to the dents and plastic undercarriage breakage from living on dirt roads. It's disappointing that I won't be able to get as many miles out of this car as I had hoped, but I'm grateful for the time we had together.

I purchased this car brand new and it was perfect for me at the time. However, now that I have a two-year-old, it's become a bit of a challenge. With a car seat in the back and a stroller in the trunk, there's barely any room for anything else. It's frustrating that I can't even fit a full load of groceries in it, let alone anything bigger than a single seat. For this reason, I'm currently in the market for an SUV. If you don't have kids, it's a great little car, but if you do, I would highly recommend looking for something bigger. Additionally, the check engine light has been on practically since I got it. I took it to AutoZone and they ran a diagnostic test on it. I can't recall the exact issue, but the technician assured me that it wasn't a major problem...

I have had to replace the bulbs quite frequently, even at just 20,067 miles. Additionally, the transmission needed to be replaced and spent 4 days in the shop. The wipers have also needed to be replaced multiple times. As a 61-year-old who has owned many new cars in my time, I can confidently say that this has been the worst experience. Despite reading all the reviews and researching, this car was touted as the best in its class. We couldn't help but laugh at these so-called professional comments as we waited at customer service, wondering what would happen next. On the bright side, it did get me out of yard work. I hope you professionals can show some integrity, and then I'll get the grass cut!
