2013 Hyundai Elantra problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).

First generation (J1; 1990)

The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.

It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.

The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Common 2013 Hyundai Elantra problems

The 2013 Hyundai Elantra has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues primarily revolve around the engine, transmission, and electrical system.

One of the most common problems reported is the failure of the canister purge valve, which is part of the EVAP system. This issue has affected 117 owners of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra, with an average mileage of 115,418. The failed EVAP component has been reported across 16 model years, from 2000 to 2017, indicating a recurring issue in Hyundai's vehicles. The canister purge valve failure can trigger the check engine light, which could lead to more extensive engine problems if left unaddressed.

Another engine-related issue is the stalling or engine failure caused by a faulty crankshaft angle sensor. This problem has been reported across 17 model years, from 1992 to 1994 and 2000 to 2016, with an average mileage of 86,768. The crankshaft angle sensor is responsible for providing critical information to the engine control module, and a malfunctioning sensor can lead to engine stalling or failure, which can be dangerous while driving.

The most commonly reported problem for the Elantra over the last 28 years is a transmission issue, specifically faulty speed sensors. These sensors can lead to incorrect shifting in automatic transmissions, affecting 20 model years from 1995 to 2016. The average mileage for this problem is 100,677, and over 300 owners have complained about it. While the sensors are relatively simple and inexpensive to replace, the inconvenience and potential safety risks associated with transmission issues cannot be ignored.

The 2013 Hyundai Elantra has also been reported to have electrical system problems, including the engine not starting, battery failure, starting issues, and electrical malfunctions. These issues can be caused by various factors, such as a faulty inhibitor switch, computer reprogramming, ignition problems, or shifter component failure. The average repair cost for these issues ranges from $90 to $120, and they are most commonly reported by vehicles with 38,000 miles on them.

In addition to these problems, the 2013 Hyundai Elantra has been reported to have issues with its EPA and fuel system. Some owners have reported that the actual fuel economy of the vehicle is lower than what is advertised, leading to a class action lawsuit against Hyundai

In conclusion, while the 2013 Hyundai Elantra has been reported to have several common problems, it is essential to note that these issues are not exclusive to this model year. Hyundai has a history of engine and transmission-related problems across various model years, but the company also offers an industry-leading five-year, 60,000-mile basic warranty to cover these issues. Despite the abundance of owner complaints about the Elantra's transmission and engine problems, the vehicle is still considered reliable, with RepairPal giving it a 4.5 out of 5.0 reliability rating and ranking it eighth out of 36 compact cars.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-09
  • VIN: 5NPDH4AEXDH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The car failed to go into the park. The vehicle was in park and continued to roll, and we placed the emergency brake on. The vehicle was towed to the dealership. The dealership replaced it with a new shift cable clip, and now the car operates. We noticed the vehicle had a previous recall that was repaired in 2019. The shift clip repair is for the same clip that failed, resulting in being unable to shift in gear. When asked why we were charged for a recall repair that didn't last, we were told we could only fix a repair once and that we needed to pay. The concern is if this vehicle was Parked on an incline I could roll forward running into something and someone. From the record there was roughly 40k miles between recall repair and the failure of the clip that was supposed to fix this problem.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-23
  • VIN: KMHD35LE0DU
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: At approximately 67,000 miles the airbag light on the instrument cluster has become permanently illuminated. This appears to be a common issue, causing Hyundai to extend the warranty on the clock spring; however, the GT model is not covered by this technical service bulletin. This issue may impact the deployment of the airbags and so should be a safety recall rather than a TSB which doesn't even cover all affected models.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01
  • VIN: KMHD35LE5DU
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: In the winter of 2024 I became aware, during a routine pre-trip inspection under the hood of my 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT, that the level of brake fluid was low enough not to be visible in the "overflow" container. About a quarter of a quart of brake fluid was then added. I then began checking the brake fluid level often and noticed that over time, I had to add brake fluid at least once a week. The problem increased to the point that I was going through a quart of brake fluid each month. In the meantime, I attempted to get various mechanics to find the leak but had a hard time convincing anyone I was leaking brake fluid as THERE WAS NEVER A WARNING LAMP OR MESSAGE ACTIVATED. After paying for other "suggested" repairs such as replacing brakes the leak continued and at times the brakes became squishy until finally a mechanic acknowledged a leak coming from the area of the ABS module actuator which he said was "fried". My car had to be in a Hyundai shop 90 miles away for three weeks awaiting the ABS actuator part and repairs as I was advised the vehicle was dangerous and I could lose the use of my brakes. Again, this issue would have never been highlighted if I had not been diligent about checking the brake fluid and could have ended with much more serious consequences than inconvenience and expense. Again, there was never a warning light indicator to emphasize a potential hazard.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-05
  • VIN: KMHDH4AE9DU
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Hyundai recall 251 happened in Sept. 2023 and a remedy was not made available until summer 2024. This was a "park outside due to fire risk" recall and a completely unacceptable amount of time to put families in danger. Fast forward to when the remedy was available. I went to my dealer, ALM Hyundai West, who completed the recall. A week later I checked the Hyundai website and the recall was not marked complete. ALM told me I needed to come back in so they could confirm it was done correctly and take pictures. I wasn't happy but I went back and they took their pictures. That was a month ago. My recall is STILL not marked as complete and ALM is so disorganized, I am not sure if my car was actually fixed at this point.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-22
  • VIN: KMHD35LE2DU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: There is a on going issue with clock spring failing on 2011-2014 Hyundai models. My model is not covered under their extended warranty cause I have a hatchback version of the Elantra, which uses the same parts. I have already replaced my clock spring at 2019 and again the issue has come in 2024. My air bag light is on, my car horn doesn't work and buttons on the steering wheel. Feel like this is a huge safety issue as I cannot communicate with other drives with my horn and I do not have a safety net of air bags deploying when a accident happens.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-20
  • VIN: KMHDH4AE0DU

I ended up having to contact a tow truck along with an officer to block the road come to find out my engine was completely blown, I contacted the service department along with warranty services and everything and nobody is willing to assist with this issue. Apparently This is an ongoing issue with Hyundai cars.

  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The steering wheel clicks and feels loose when it moves. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-19
  • VIN: KMHD35LE7DU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine of my 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT failed due to a known piston-slap issue, and it is available for inspection for a limited time before being sold to a junkyard. This failure occurred suddenly while I was on the highway, putting my safety and the safety of others at risk as I had to maneuver the car to the side of the road amidst heavy traffic. The problem has been confirmed by both the Hyundai dealership and an independent service center, who diagnosed the piston-slap issue and found the engine filled with sludge, a known issue with these engines. Despite having 28 documented service records and regular oil changes, Hyundai denied the warranty claim, citing engine neglect. Hyundai representatives have inspected the vehicle and provided a technical bulletin documenting this defect. Prior to the failure, there were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms indicating a problem with the engine.

Negative 2013 Hyundai Elantra car reviews

  1. Theron O'Kon 2025-01-02

I purchased this car brand new in October 2012 and was immediately drawn to its striking appearance and beautiful color scheme both inside and out. I was pleasantly surprised by its fuel economy from the very beginning. Previously, I owned a 2011 Mazda 2 which was much smaller and only got around 32 mpg. Unfortunately, it was totaled in an accident on I-95 near Richmond VA, but luckily I was able to continue using this car as a courier, driving 250 miles per day. I consistently achieved 40+ mpg while cruising at 65 mph and could always get over 400 miles out of a full tank. However, there were some downsides to the car. After about 50k miles, the engine began to knock and the interior wear was quite disappointing. The paint even came off the center of the steering wheel and the seats, despite being scotch-guarded, were easily stained. Additionally, there were some radio issues. Overall, though, I still have a soft spot for this car and would recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and fuel-efficient vehicle.

  2. Eric Ritchie 2024-10-26

Hyundai's nu-engines, used in their 2011-2014 models, have a known issue where metal shavings can get into the oil and cause the engine to fail. Unfortunately, this issue affects engines at different mileages and can be costly to repair. While we have owned two dependable Hyundai vehicles in the past, this experience has left us disappointed. It is important for Hyundai to take responsibility and address this issue to ensure customer satisfaction and loyalty.

  3. Edd Stehr 2024-10-11

To address this issue with the dealership, it is important to assertively communicate the problem. The rear tires are extremely worn and cupping, causing a deafening roar on the inside of the car. Additionally, the rear of the car slips and fishtails over bumps in the road, regardless of speed. Despite previous research, the issue has not been resolved. During a recent visit to Rick Case Hyundai, the service technician dismissed the issue as normal due to the solid fixed axle. However, the visibly pigeon-toed rear tires suggest otherwise. It is important to confidently express the need for a resolution to this issue.

I bought this car used with 60k miles earlier this year. Unfortunately, the warranty for second owners ends at 60k miles, so I would recommend purchasing with a warranty. So far, I have had to spend more on repairs for this car than I have for my other two cars (an '03 Toyota Matrix and an '06 Dodge Stratus) combined. I have had to replace two bad wheel bearings, the AC compressor is making loud noises, I had to replace the battery, the alternator is starting to fail (lights flicker at idle), and the power seat controls work intermittently. However, I have no complaints about the gas mileage, which is about the same as my Matrix (averaging around 33-35 mpg with mixed driving). The car is fun to drive, but it can be a little noisy. The Bluetooth system keeps trying to pair with my phone when it's not active, but that's a minor issue.

Although disappointed with my 2013 Elantra purchase, I am confident in my decision to switch from Volkswagens. Despite the car's low mileage of 22k, I have experienced some issues with its performance. However, I have been diligent in getting regular oil changes and not driving long commutes. When my car recently experienced a problem with the PCV valve, causing it to get stuck at 40 mph on the freeway, I was initially concerned. However, I am reassured by the fact that the issue is fixable and I am confident in the expertise of the mechanics who will repair it. While the repair may not be covered by the warranty, I am willing to invest in the longevity of my car. Overall, I remain confident in the reliability and responsibility of my Elantra.

Positive 2013 Hyundai Elantra car reviews

Hello! It's been 18 months since I bought this car for commuting. I noticed that there are a lot of negative reviews about this car, so I thought I'd share my experience to balance things out. Is it the greatest car ever? No, but it is definitely rock solid and does what it's supposed to do. At the 20K mile point, I observed that the gas mileage has never been below 32mpg, regardless of driving habit, season, hills, etc. On the freeway, it easily surpasses 40mpg. The stock sound system is better than average and much better than the crappy JBL system in my wife's Highlander limited. Yes, it is a bit noisy and you feel every bump, but it is an economy car. I have not experienced any of the issues presented in negative reviews. Thank you for reading!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my new Elantra GLS with the Preferred Package that I purchased about a month ago. Even though I didn't get much off the MSRP (this car is in high demand), I truly believe that the Elantra is an exceptional value and outclasses the competition in terms of features and styling. I was a bit worried that the engine might not have enough power since it's on the smaller side, but I've found it to be more than adequate and haven't felt like it's under-powered at all.

I purchased this car in the summer of 2014 and it was last on the lot in 2013. I was able to buy it for $7K off sticker price and it had all the equipment I wanted. It has nearly 40K miles on it now and I haven't had any trouble with it. The only drawbacks are that it has marginal power and some road noise at freeway speed. However, I haven't experienced any rattling so far. All the electronics, including the navigation and upgraded stereo, have been flawless. While I have noticed that the mpg is 1-2 less than advertised, I do tend to drive faster than 65 on the freeway by 5-10 mph. I'm planning to replace the OEM tires soon, but I likely won't get the same brand (Hankook). Overall, I have absolutely no complaints about this car. If my experience remains the same for another 40K miles, I would say that it's one of the best new cars I've ever purchased. Most of my previous cars have been Toyota Camrys. As of 4/17/18, I sold the Elantra at 61000 miles and all of the above still applied when I sold it. I have no complaints about the car and it may be the best car I've ever purchased. The only reason I traded it in was because I got a great deal on a new 2017 Sonata Limited with all the safety features.

I purchased my 2013 limited Elantra in September 2012 and have had no major issues with it. I absolutely adore the exterior, interior, and the ride and comfort. Although it can be a little noisy on the road, I have grown accustomed to it and usually listen to my radio at a high volume anyway. I have driven 90k miles so far and have only experienced one issue, which was the transmission temperature sensor error that caused the transmission to feel like it was going out. However, I took it to the dealer and it was covered under warranty and fixed with no further problems other than normal wear and tear. The Continental tires that came with the car were not great, so I replaced them with Pirelli P7 all-season tires, which significantly improved the car's grip on the road. I would not recommend this car for areas with heavy snowfall, as it tends to slide around. Other than that, this vehicle has been fantastic to me and still looks brand new!

I've driven many Corollas for their fuel efficiency. After installing a K&N filter, I now get over 40 mpg even with the air conditioning on and driving at speeds over 70 mph. I purchased my car as a certified pre-owned vehicle with 37K miles and have taken great care of it ever since. Now at 94K miles, it still runs just as well as the day I bought it. I've read that these engines are truly exceptional, and I couldn't agree more. Just be sure to check that yours was made in Korea rather than Alabama!
