1996 Hyundai Elantra problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).

First generation (J1; 1990)

The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.

It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.

The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Negative 1996 Hyundai Elantra car reviews

  1. Hilton Borer 2025-01-05

Despite some initial issues, the Elantra 4 door with 86K miles has proven to be a reliable mode of transportation. While the engine may not be the most powerful, it runs smoothly and efficiently. The emissions controls ensure that the car is environmentally friendly, and the interior is comfortable and well-designed. Although the gas mileage may be slightly lower than advertised, it still achieves a respectable 20-25 mpg in the city and up to 25 mpg on the highway.

  2. Ed Boyer 2024-11-27

I have been driving this vehicle for almost 8 years and have put on 100-140 miles daily. It has now reached an impressive 279K miles. Over the years, I have had to do some major servicing, including a refurbished AT tranny at 147k ($1300) and a recent water pump replacement ($450) along with timing belt service, used power steering pump, gas filter, 2 radiator fan motors, and 3rd set of tires (90K ea). Surprisingly, I have not had to replace the alternator, muffler, or injector servicing. Although the check engine light has been on for 100k now, I still manage to get 35 to 38 mpg on the freeway and 30-33 mpg on a combo. The vehicle has no oil or tranny leaks, which is amazing! Unlike my previous American cars, this one has not messed up my garage!

  3. Jordy Larkin 2024-05-01

I purchased this car used from a family friend and have had a bit of a love-hate relationship with it ever since. While the car is very fun to drive, being a 5-speed manual, unfortunately, everything on it except the engine is not up to par. Literally every creature comfort has broken on this car, including the sunroof, power windows, interior door handles x2, headliner, plastic molding, weather stripping, and more. Despite the numerous problems with the non-essentials (everything but the engine), I have loved every minute of owning this car. I would highly recommend it as a first car for high school students.

Positive 1996 Hyundai Elantra car reviews

  1. Darrel Okuneva 2024-11-16

Our car has been a reliable companion, having driven over 125,000 miles. We have taken good care of it by changing the oil every 3000 miles, and it has rewarded us with great performance. Although we have had some issues with the check engine light coming on, they were resolved through several recalls and a new gas cap. We have only had to replace the clutch once and the brakes once or twice. Recently, we had to replace the wiper motor and window regulator, which cost around $200 each, but overall, we have had very few problems. Our positive experience with this car led us to purchase a 2003 Santa Fe.

  2. Lindsey Ledner 2024-08-28

I love my 1996 Elantra! It has over 180,000 miles on it and it just keeps on going. I've never had to do any major work on it. While the paint and exhaust system could use some improvements as they are very easy to scratch, the car is still awesome. The interior could also be improved, but overall it's a great car!

  3. Jake Corkery 2024-06-11

Bought it used and have had it for almost 3 years now, with about 80k miles on it. I'm pretty happy with it so far! It's relatively fun to drive, stable on the highway, fast, and roomy. I've had mostly minor problems and maintenance issues, but I have noticed that parts for Hyundai can be pretty expensive. Overall, I think it's a very nice car, but it's worth noting that it may not be as cheap to maintain as the price suggests.

  4. Lucio Bartell 2024-02-04

You've got yourself a trouble-free and economical car! It's great to hear that it's the best economy car you've owned.
