2005 Hyundai Elantra problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Common 2005 Hyundai Elantra problems
The 2005 Hyundai Elantra has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners.
Another significant problem is related to vehicle speed control. Drivers have reported that the car continues to accelerate after they take their foot off the pedal, which could be due to pedals being trapped in aftermarket floor mats.
Engine and powertrain complaints are less common, with only 10 reported issues. However, one concerning problem is the hesitation to shift and jerking into gear at under 100,000 miles, which can usually be avoided with regular transmission fluid changes.
The 2005 Hyundai Elantra has a total of 4 recalls on file with the NHTSA. Two of these recalls are for airbags, one is for exterior lighting, and one is for the steering rod assembly.
In terms of reliability, the 2005 Hyundai Elantra has proven to be relatively reliable over the years. With adequate care, a used Elantra can last between 200,000 to 250,000 miles, with an annual maintenance cost of around $452.
Despite these issues, many owners have reported positive experiences with the 2005 Hyundai Elantra. Some have reported that the car has been very reliable, with no problems to date, while others have noted that the car's low price attracts a lot of first-time drivers who may be skipping oil changes and tire maintenance.

2005 Hyundai Elantra recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2005 Hyundai Elantra.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI CARIBBEAN-PUERTO RICO
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 3,011 MODEL YEAR 2005-2007 ELANTRA, TUCSON, SONATA, AZERA AND ACCENT VEHICLES. A MALFUNCTIONING STOP LAMP SWITCH MAY CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO FAIL TO ILLUMINATE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED OR MAY CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO REMAIN ILLUMINATED WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS RELEASED. A DEFECTIVE STOP LAMP SWITCH MAY ALSO AFFECT THE OPERATION OF THE BRAKE-TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK FEATURE SO THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BE SHIFT OUT OF THE "PARK" POSITION. IT MAY ALSO CAUSE THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) MALFUNCTION LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE, AND IT MAY NOT DEACTIVATE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED.
- Consequence: ANY OF THESE MALFUNCTIONS COULD LEAD TO A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STOP LAMP SWITCH FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 2, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI OF PUERTO RICO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-787-999-4310.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI CARIBBEAN-PUERTO RICO
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN ADVANCED AIR BAG SYSTEM. THE OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (OCS) INSTALLED IN THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT OF THE VEHICLE MAY MISCLASSIFY A CHILD RESTRAINT SEAT (CRS) AS AN ADULT. THIS MAY OCCUR IF THE CRS IS INSTALLED AFTER AN ADULT HAS BEEN SEATED IN THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT. IF THERE HAS NOT BEEN A 'KEY ON' ' KEY OFF' CYCLE WITH THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SEAT EMPTY PRIOR TO INSTALLATION OF THE CRS.
- Consequence: THE POSSIBILITY OF MISCLASSIFICATION OF A CRS AS AN ADULT MAY ALLOW THE RIGHT FRONT AIRBAG OR SIDE IMPACT AIRBAG TO DEPLOY IN A CRASH AND COULD RESULT IN INJURY TO THE RIGHT FRONT OCCUPANT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE VEHICLE'S OCS ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) TO REMOVE THE FEATURE THAT MAY CAUSE THE CRS TO BE RECOGNIZED AS AN ADULT. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 15, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI OF PUERTO RICO AT 1-800-981-0188.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 31, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: STEERING:LINKAGES:TIE ROD ASSEMBLY
- Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN BUILT WITH THREADED PORTIONS OF THE STEERING GEARBOX ASSEMBLY'S LEFT AND RIGHT INNER BALL JOINT ASSEMBLIES THAT CONTAIN INTERNAL CRACKS IN THE MATERIAL STRUCTURE.
- Consequence: IF THE INNER BALL JOINT ASSEMBLY WAS TO BREAK AS A RESULT OF THE INTERNAL CRACK, THE TIE ROD END ASSEMBLY WOULD NOT LONGER BE ATTACHED TO THE STEERING GEAR BOX. THIS WOULD PREVENT STEERING CONTROL OF THAT FRONT WHEEL BY THE SEPARATED TIE ROD WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STEERING GEARBOX ASSEMBLIES ON THESE VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE. OWNERS WERE CONTACTED BY TELEPHONE BEGINNING ON APRIL 8, 2005, AND INSTRUCTED NOT TO DRIVE THEIR VEHICLES. HYUNDAI WILL ARRANGE TO PICK UP AND RETURN THEIR VEHICLES AFTER REPAIR. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

I purchased my first Hyundai and it was such a good car that I ended up buying two more Hyundais, an '09 and an '11 Elantra! I bought this car in December 2005 after it was leased and have had it for over 5 years now. I have never been disappointed with it and the only service it has needed is standard oil changes, replacement of front brakes, first set of tires at 30k, and a new battery at 30k. The car has never broken down on us and has been very reliable. While the MPG is good, it's not great due to the car's heavy weight for its size. We can get 24mpg out of it combined. It has tons of features for a low price and for an economy car, it is very spunky and has nice handling. It's smooth on the road, even on rough roads. The pros of this car are its great value and reliability, while the only con is that the AM radio reception is poor. Overall, it's an awesome car!
-
The car is solidly built and has held up well even after 5 years of use. The warranty is also great - when I had issues with the CV boots, cylinders, and all 4 shocks, they replaced them all for free! I'm confident that this car will last for a few more years!
-
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that this car is really great! Although it's been banged up a bit, most things still work perfectly. Plus, it still gets an average of 28-30 mpg, which is fantastic! The 5-speed stick shift also adds some extra zip to the car, making it even more fun to drive. Overall, I feel like I got more than my money's worth out of it. Thanks for considering it!
-
This is a great car for the money. The warranty is exceptional too.
-
I purchased this vehicle secondhand from Car Max in Hartford CT for $10K (with taxes, fees and additional warranty it came out to about $12K). It was formerly a Fleet Vehicle, but was apparently traded in at the dealership because it had only 60K miles on it. Recently, I had to put $1,434 in repairs plus $280 for 4 brand new tires. However, the repairs were for parts worn out due to the age of the vehicle (14 years) and they just needed replacing. It has always been reliable and has never needed anything more than regular maintenance and parts replaced due to age and wear and tear. Even when I could only afford to maintain the bare minimum of maintenance (brakes, tires, belts, oil changes etc) due to very limited finances, this car continued to be reliable. Now, with 224K miles on it, the engine, transmission and everything else is still going strong. That's why I felt comfortable spending the money on the recent repairs, rather than getting into a car payment for another vehicle when this one has always been perfectly reliable. I would definitely purchase another Hyundai Elantra again with absolutely no hesitation.

You made a great choice with your purchase! Despite having 128k miles on it, you've only had to change the battery and windshield wipers, and have had no problems in the 8 months and 10k miles you've driven it. That's impressive! You're also getting a great 28 mpg combined. While the exterior is pretty cool compared to other cars of the same age, the interior may not be as good looking. You may experience some shaking at high speeds and with the steering wheel, but considering the reliability and value you've received, those minor issues are easy to overlook.

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned having to replace the clutch at 30000 miles, and unfortunately it wasn't covered under the 'bumper to bumper' warranty. I completely understand how frustrating that can be, especially since you were the only one driving the car and didn't abuse it. I just wanted to let you know that manual transmissions aren't typically covered under the warranty, but automatic transmissions are. Thanks for sharing your experience, and have a great day!
Benton King 2024-07-24
Hi there! I wanted to share that my Elantra has 3200 miles on it and I take great care of it by checking all systems and fluids regularly. Unfortunately, the engine warning light came on yesterday and even after a preliminary check, the reason couldn't be found. I'm feeling disappointed, but I'm having it towed to the dealership tomorrow to get it checked out. Thanks for listening!
Dee Shields 2024-04-03
This car has had some issues. In the 37000 miles that I have driven it, I have had to replace 3 headlights, and the car is showing signs of rust and peeling paint. Unfortunately, the clutch and transmission failed suddenly last night, and the dealership informed me that it is no longer under warranty. Despite these setbacks, I remain confident in my ability to find a solution and move forward.
Domenico Ledner 2024-04-03
The initial quality of the product exceeded my expectations. However, I was disappointed to find out that the FM tuner was not functional. On the bright side, I really appreciate the GT's leather interior and smooth ride. On the downside, I found the black bodyside molding to be a bit of a hassle to hand wax around.
