1998 Hyundai Elantra problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-04-22
- VIN: KMHJF24M0WU
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: AFTER ENTERING A HIGHWAY MY ELANTRA CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP ON THE HIGHWAY FROM 65 MPH AND THE ENGINE DIED. I LATER HAD TO REPLACE THE FRONT BRAKES AND WHEEL BEARINGS ON THE SIDE I SWERVED INTO AND I'M SURE THAT IS WHAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM. I HEARD A WOMAN COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS SAME SITUATION THAT HAPPENED TO HER TWICE TO A DEALERSHIP MECHANIC WHILE SHE WAS HAVING THE TRANSMISSION ON HER ELANTRA CHECKED OUT. I THINK THIS PROBLEM RESULTS FROM THERE BEING NO LOCK ON THE SHIFTER BETWEEN NEUTRAL AND DRIVE. IT TAKES VERY LITTLE EFFORT TO POP THE SHIFTER INTO NEUTRAL (LIKE A COAT SLEEVE) AND I THINK I TOUCHED IT WHILE REACHING FOR MY RADIO.THIS SENT THE ENGINE INTO VERY HIGH REVS WHICH CAUSED THE VACUUM SYSTEM TO FAIL AND THEN CAUSED THE POWER BRAKES TO FALL TO THE FLOOR. *AK

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-07-20
- VIN: KMHJF24M1WU
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 1998 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE PROBLEM I HAVE IS SPORADIC AND WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. AT ANY GIVEN TIME THE VEHICLE WILL JERK TO ALMOST A COMPLETE STOP AS IF SOMEONE HAS PULLED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON. THIS WILL HAPPEN AT VARIOUS SPEEDS AND HAPPENS WHETHER OR NOT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. I HAVE PARKED THE VEHICLE AS IT FRIGHTENS ME TO DRIVE MORE THAN 20 MPH. I USE MY VEHICLE FREQUENTLY FOR MY EMPLOYMENT AND HAVE BEEN RENTING A VEHICLE. I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM IS NOT AS UNCOMMON AS IT APPEARS TO BE. I HAVE READ NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON HYUNDAI (ACCENT)AND ELANTRAS WHERE THE PROBLEM I AM HAVING IS THE SAME. I THINK THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS NOT ONLY TO THE DRIVER OF THE DEFECTIVE VEHICLE, BUT ALSO TO ANYONE WHO MAY BE FOLLOWING CLOSE BEHIND. I HAVE HAD SOME CLOSE CALLS DURING THE DOWNSHIFT, BUT LUCKILY NO ACCIDENTS. I HAVE READ ARTICLES WHERE THE TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN REPLACED AS MANY AS FOUR TIMES IN ONE YEAR AND STILL THE PROBLEM WAS NOT FIXED. AS YOU KNOW, TRUST WORTHY AUTO MECHANICS ARE A RARE BREED, AND I CAN NOT AFFORD TO GO THROUGH NUMEROUS PARTS REPLACEMENTS WHILE THEY TRY TO DETERMINE THE EXACT CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. ANY INFORMATION AVAILABLE SEEMS TO COST AT LEAST $24.95 TO OBTAIN AND I STILL DON'T KNOW IF I AM GETTING THE INFORMATION I NEED. I KNOW THAT HYUNDAI IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND DON'T THINK THEY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO HIDE THE DETAILS FROM CONSUMERS. THE LAST TIME I DROVE MY VEHICLE, I ARRIVED HOME IN TEARS, SHAKING FROM HOLDING THE STEERING WHEEL SO TIGHTLY IN CASE IT DECIDED TO JERK TO A STOP. PLEASE HELP. *JB

I bought this car new in 1998 and my wife loves it. She would rather keep it than give it up. This car has a 5-speed that gives it some extra pep. I enjoy driving it so I can race some of the teenagers that think their Civics are fast. I usually blow their doors off and I have nothing but stock. The only issue that I have had is regular maintenance, such as battery, brakes, wipers, and tires.
-
It's great fun to drive and easy on the wallet. Plus, it has plenty of power when you need it.

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share my experience with my SE model that I purchased brand new back in May of '97. I have been extremely pleased with its overall performance. Not only is it great on gas, but it has also proven to be very dependable. With 85,000 miles on it, it still runs like a charm! The 4 cylinder engine is surprisingly strong and the 5 speed transmission makes it a joy to drive. I have only needed to perform routine maintenance on it and have had no major problems. It has truly exceeded my expectations and I feel that I have definitely gotten my money's worth out of it! Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

I had very few problems with this car and it still runs well. It's a steal for the price!

This car has provided me with better service than the GMs I have owned. In comparison, those cars were unreliable and not worth the money. However, I would recommend avoiding the automatic model as the transmission can be problematic. If you change the timing belt when necessary, you should have no issues with the engine. The front rotors are not designed well, but I updated them to 2000 spindles which are better. It's important to note that all cars have flaws, but this one has fewer than most. As a mechanic with 30 years of experience, I can say that maintenance is key to keeping any car running smoothly. Unfortunately, transmission problems are a common issue with all automakers at the moment.

Although I have had a difficult experience with this car, I am confident in my assessment that it is not a reliable vehicle. Despite replacing the oxygen sensors, the car continues to have issues with skipping gears and revving too high when idling. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this car to anyone based on my personal experience.

We purchased this car used just over a year ago with 60K on the clock. Unfortunately, it has proven to be more cheaply made than we had hoped. Everything about this car feels low-quality. Now, with 71K on the odometer, it requires a new transmission. This will not be an inexpensive repair, but we are hopeful that it will improve the car's performance.

I bought my 1997 Elantra in 1996 and, despite my initial skepticism about the new model, I have learned to love it. It's a good, reliable car for the money, although it may not quite match up to Honda quality just yet. That being said, it's still a great price for what you get!
Brett Ullrich 2024-09-29
What a fantastic mountain car! It handles really well on snow, ice, and solid snow floors. I put 10K miles on it in just 6 months and it still runs like a dream. It has great get up and go, especially on steep mountain grades - it can even go 65 in 4th gear up a big grade (5 speed). Although I did have to replace the wheel bearings, fix an exhaust system problem, and deal with an oil pan leak, these were minor issues. The only downside is that the paint scratches easily. Overall, my experience with this car has been wonderful, aside from the occasional visit to the mechanic.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it when I was saving for a house and now, three children later, I use it to commute 70 miles a day. It has been a great car for my needs, even with its 110,000 miles. While it may not handle the best or be the most comfortable, it has been very reliable and I still get over 33 miles to the gallon. Overall, I have been very satisfied with my decision to buy this car!
