2003 Hyundai Elantra problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Common 2003 Hyundai Elantra problems
The 2003 Hyundai Elantra has been reported to have several common problems, primarily concerning suspension, airbags, powertrain, and engine issues.
Suspension problems are the most prevalent, with 58 complaints out of 231 total on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) page. The main issue is rusty control arms, which has been the subject of a recall in 2009 but continues to generate complaints as recently as 2019. This issue has been known to cause suspension noise, vibration, and difficulty steering.
Airbags have been another area of concern, with 47 complaints filed on the NHTSA page. The primary issue is that the airbags fail to deploy during accidents, which has resulted in driver injuries. Additionally, the airbag warning light has been known to turn on and stay on without explanation, although there have been no recalls on this matter.
Powertrain issues are relatively rare, with only 9 complaints filed on the NHTSA page. Most of these complaints are related to the control arm rust issue, rather than issues with the transmission itself. Engine complaints are also scarce, with only a few instances of engine noise and vibration reported.
The 2003 Hyundai Elantra has a total of 5 recalls on file with the NHTSA, which is relatively low for a twenty-year-old compact car. The most significant recall was for the control arm rust issue, which affected over 100,000 vehicles.
In terms of reliability, the 2003 Hyundai Elantra is expected to last around 250,000 miles, with some owners reporting mileage well past 200,000. The car is known for its comfortable ride, good handling, and peppy acceleration, although it could stand to be more agile. The lack of cruise control in the GLS and low ground clearance has been criticized by some owners.
The 2003 Hyundai Elantra's technology is basic, even by 2003 standards. Entertainment technology is limited to a CD player with six speakers in the higher trim level and a tape deck with four speakers in the entry-level model. Safety features are adequate for 2003, with airbags having an occupant sensor system and full front and side airbags in all models, although anti-lock brakes are only available as an add-on.
Overall, the 2003 Hyundai Elantra is an excellent value for a dependable car, with an entry-level GLS typically listing at around $2,818 and a top-of-the-line GT averaging around $3,222. However, the car's age may be apparent, with some owners reporting issues such as a rattling sound from inside the dash and difficulty starting the car.
Is the 2003 Elantra a good car?
Overall Rating 8/10 – The 2003 Elantra is an overall decent used compact that earns an extra point for being reliable, affordable, efficient, and more powerful than you expect. Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Comfortable and spacious for a compact, but a recurring suspension issue is worrying.

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-02-22
- VIN: KMHDN45D73U
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: OUR 2003 HYUNDAI ELANTRA IS SUFFERING FROM SEVERE CORROSION ON THE SUBFRAME/UNIBODY, A PROBLEM FOR WHICH A CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT WAS APPROVED (SEE THE FOLLOWING LINK HTTP://SALTBELTCORROSION.HYUNDAIUSA.COM/ FOR DETAILS REGARDING THE CIRULLI V. HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA SETTLEMENT, WHICH REACHED FINAL APPROVAL ON MAY 25, 2011). THE SETTLEMENT PROVIDED REIMBURSEMENT FOR REPAIRS. ALTHOUGH HYUNDAI PERFORMED A "RUSTPROOFING/WAX" REPAIR IN 2010 ON THIS CAR, AS WELL AS A SUBFRAME REPAIR/REPLACEMENT IN 2015 (WHICH IS CONSIDERED BY HYUNDAI TO HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM AS ORIGINALLY DESCRIBED IN THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT), WE BELIEVE THAT THE DEFECT AS DESCRIBED IN THE CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT WAS IN FACT NOT RECTIFIED, AND THUS CONSISTS OF A FAILURE OF RECALL REPAIR. IN FACT, IT WOULD SEEM THAT ALTHOUGH HYUNDAI DID REPLACE ALL OR A PORTION OF THE SUBFRAME IS 2015, THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM HAS RE-OCCURRED ON THE CAR WITHIN LESS THAN 5 YEARS, AND IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE (IF THE SUBFRAME COLLAPSES UNDER THE WEIGHT OF THE CAR, THERE WOULD BE SERIOUS RISKS OF INJURY TO ANY PASSENGERS ON BOARD). THE DEEP SUBFRAME CORROSION ITSELF WAS ONLY NOTICED AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY A LOCAL MECHANIC MORE THAN A YEAR AFTER PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE FROM ITS SECOND OWNER AND IS EVIDENCED BY THE ATTACHED PICTURES. IN SUMMARY, ALTHOUGH HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA CONSIDERS THAT THE CORROSION PROBLEM AS DESCRIBED IN CIRULLI V. HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA SETTLEMENT WAS REPAIRED SUCCESSFULLY IN 2015 ON THE CAR CORRESPONDING TO THE VIN NUMBER ATTACHED TO THIS COMPLAINT, WE BELIEVE THAT IT CONSISTED OF A FAILED RECALL REPAIR, AND THAT IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION AT THEIR EXPENSE. ALSO ATTACHED IS A PDF SHOWING A DESCRIPTION OF THE CORROSION WITHIN A LARGER ESTIMATE, WHICH WAS AUTHORED BY THE SAME SHOP THAT TOOK THE PHOTOS OF THE VEHICLE'S CORRODED SUBFRAME.

REPLACEMENT OF THE CONTROL ARMS WERE NOT REQUIRED AT THE TIME. INSPECTION, UNDERCOATING AND ,DRILLED DRAINAGE HOLES WERE THE FIX. WHILE STRANDED ON THE ROAD, A CROSS COUNTRY DRIVER STOPPED. HE INFORMED ME THAT HE IS SEEING THIS SAME PROBLEM ACROSS THE COUNTRY WITH THE 2002 AND 2003 ELANTRAS. IT LOOKS AS IF THE RECALL FIX ONLY POSTPONED THE PROBLEM. THE ARMS SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED, NOT HOLES DRILLED TO LET THE WATER DRAIN, THE DAMAGE WAS ALREADY IN THE WORKS, AND NOW WITH SO MANY OF THESE CARS STILL ON THE ROAD,, WE ARE LOOKING AT A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN. I HAD JUST EXITED FROM A MAIN HIGHWAY, ONTO A LOCAL ROAD WHEN THE INCIDENT HAPPENED, NO ONE WAS INJURED. A FEW MOMENTS EARLIER WOULD HAVE BEEN A VERY DIFFERENT SCENE. I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy a Hyundai, but after having it for almost a year now, I absolutely love the car. I haven't had a single problem with it!
-
This is a great little car for a great little price. With the warranty that comes with it, it's perfect for a couple just starting out. You'll have safety, security, and a sharp car without the steep price. The power everything and side airbags are great features that make this car a steal. I highly recommend this automobile to any married couple just starting out.
-
I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I bought my car brand new and have had all required service completed as suggested. So far, I haven't had any problems with it, even with 84 thousand miles on it! I'm really happy with my Elantra and I'm considering getting another one or maybe a Sonata, depending on the cost. Thanks for listening!

I bought this car brand new back in late '02 and have put 92K miles on it since then. Fortunately, I've only had a few minor issues, all of which were covered under the extended warranty: the E-brake cable, rear wheel bearing, and hatch latch. The original tires lasted for 40K miles and the brakes lasted a bit longer. It does need a new clutch, but that seems about right for a car with 90k miles. The paint is a bit sensitive to dings and scratches, but the body has held up fairly well. I have lost a few radio control knobs and the speakers are beginning to give a little static, but the interior has held up nicely. Service at dealers has been a bit mixed, sometimes a bit expensive and other times they don't do things listed in the manual (like the radiator flush at 60,000). The resale value isn't great, but I plan on keeping this car until it falls apart.

I'm so glad I bought the 2003 Elantra GlS with a moonroof, keyless, and an alarm for less than $13,000 out the door! It's definitely a great deal for such a comfortable car. The only thing I'm not too fond of is the interior cloth, as it's not really my style.

This car has been a fantastic economy car since the day I bought it. I get 26 MPG around town and then 30+ on long highway trips. I even put a K and N filter in and now it runs even better with even more efficient gas mileage. It comfortably sits 4 people and can have a fifth if necessary.

Bought new in '03 and now has 117,000 on it and still runs and drives great. Have had zero problems other than the typical eating of tires and the head and tail light headaches. It has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. Also, I hit a deer at 55 mph and the front end held up incredibly well, just replaced the grill and hood after about a month and it still looks and runs great.

Originally, it cost $14,000. It now has over 87,000 miles, with only minor repairs. The original battery lasted me until the 80,000 mile point. Unfortunately, the windshield got a crack from a thrown up rock on the highway at about the 60,000 mile point. Now, at my last inspection, the brakes barely passed, and I'll need to have them worked on soon, but overall, not bad for this age and mileage. I would definitely consider buying another model like this one.

The car has had some issues and has been taken back to the dealership within 24 hours. Unfortunately, I have had to replace the tires four times in the past three years due to the emergency brake locking in cold weather and wearing down the tires. This has resulted in several tows. While the maker has not taken responsibility, the dealership has been helpful in finding solutions. However, there is no guarantee that the problems will be fixed and it has been costly for me. The dealership has reported that my problem is not covered by the warranty, which is frustrating.

Within 4 years, I have had to replace the transmission, alternator, battery, brakes, all 4 tires, and about 8 headlights. While this car is affordable, it does come with its own set of challenges. Unfortunately, I cannot consider it to be a reliable car as it seems that one thing breaks after the other. Additionally, the gas mileage is not great and the paint scratches easily.
