The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

- Summary: I was driving my 2011 Elantra, and when I needed to brake, it didn't feel the same as usual. The brake pedal felt kind of soft. After a while, when I needed to brake at an intersection, the brakes completely failed. The brake pedal went all the way to the floor, and there was no braking. My speed was about 30 mph, and I couldn't stop. I was really lucky that there were no other cars at the intersection, and I just passed the stop sign without stopping. I was so scared. I didn't understand what happened and immediately changed my plans to drive home. Luckily, I was only a few minutes away. I used the hand brake for the rest of the drive. After I parked the car, I saw brake fluid leaking at the bottom, and when I moved the plastic cover, I saw that the brake line was completely rusty.

Both had the same seat belt damage on the center seat belt. The center belt has been used very little over the life of the car. Since all three vehicles had the same damage it appears that this is not due to normal wear and tear. I feel that Hyundai should replace the seat belt at no cost

- Summary: Starting in the summer of 2023 my car started making screeching noises when applying brakes, turning, etc. All 4 brakes and rotors were replaced. My car continues to screech. More concerning is that the steering wheel started clicking when turning in the Fall of 2023 and has progressively worsened, now clicking whenever moved left or right even a few inches. The steering feels very loose. Although the car is a 2011, it only has 36,000 original miles on it. This is very frustrating and feels very unsafe to drive. Repair/evaluation appointment with the dealership is scheduled for 2/1/24 to see what they say. My issues sounds VERY familiar to many other complaints on here and from other research I have done. I am not sure why this is not a recall to correct this common problem in the Elantra. Other Hyundai models have had steering column recalls. I see that the rubber coupling warranty in the power steering assembly was extended to 10 yrs/100,000 miles, however I was never informed of any safety or warranty issues when purchasing this vehicle in early February of 2020 which would have been within the 10 years. Extra disappointing is that the previous 2 owners were the sales manager and general manager of the dealership where I purchased it from.

Due to an electronic stability control (ESC) sensor malfunction, the brakes for one or more wheels may be applied unexpectedly and the engine power may be reduced. These symptoms will be accompanied by illumination of the ESC indicator lamp in the instrument cluster.

Based on my experience of 41000 leased driving miles in SE Wisconsin, I would highly recommend this car. Despite one recall repair for a defective airbag headliner support bracket, I have had no major mechanical problems. The scheduled maintenance costs have been low, and the feature set is excellent - an amazing value for the money. The exterior styling is beautiful and I have received lots of compliments on the car. The interior is comfortable, fairly roomy and well designed. Additionally, the fuel economy is outstanding, averaging in the low to mid 30's combined city/highway. While the ride can be somewhat noisy and rough, including side-to-side jostling over stretches of rough roads, the maneuverability is excellent. Although I experienced poor performance in snowy/slippery conditions, this could have been due to a tires issue. Overall, I believe this car is a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable and affordable vehicle.

I picked up my new Elantra 4 weeks ago and I couldn't be happier! I've been buying cars since 1958 and this one is without a doubt the best ever. I've already driven 2700 miles and every time I get behind the wheel, I can't help but smile. Recently, I took a 330 mile road trip through the Ozark Mountains in north central Arkansas with 4 adults, each over 200 lbs, and we averaged an impressive 35.3 actual MPG based on miles and gas used. That's only about 2 MPG less than what the trip computer indicated. I traded in my 07 Aveo and the difference is night and day. Compared to the 6 Pontiac Bonnevilles I've bought over the years, this car beats them all. Thanks to Hyundai's Balloon purchase with extended amortization, my payments are nearly $140 less than the best I could get from a Chevy dealer for a Cruz.

Fit and finish are excellent. The doors close with authority. The cabin is roomy except for headroom in the back seat. Even without the adjustable lumbar support, the seats are comfortable. Interior materials are nice. The trunk is roomy as well. The car has adequate power, but you won't find yourself speeding with it. It always feels like you have to push it a little. The automatic transmission shifts up and down smoothly. The ride is firm, not floaty. I don't have a problem with the steering drift that others mention.

We just completed a road trip from Chicago to NY with our baby and a ton of baby gear in our car. Despite driving at 70-80MPH, we only had to stop for gas twice and put in ten gallons both times. When we arrived, we realized that we had driven over 800 miles and the tank had more gas than when we started. That's an impressive 40 mpg! However, fuel efficiency wasn't the only reason we chose this car. We test drove everything in its class and while the handling isn't quite as tight as the Focus or the 3, it's still balanced, stable, and a lot of fun to drive. Plus, you get more space and features for your money. Overall, we think it's a great car.

I absolutely adore this car! It's stunning, comfortable, and so luxurious, especially considering its price compared to others in its class. I test drove the Fusion, Civic, and even considered some fairly new Accords, but ultimately decided to go back to the Hyundai. My family and I are thrilled with the car, although we have noticed that the gas mileage is not quite what was advertised. We typically get around 28 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway. During a recent 300-mile trip, we were unable to achieve over 32 MPG, which was a bit disappointing. I'm curious to hear from other owners about their experiences and any tips they may have to improve gas mileage. Thank you in advance for your help!

The engine failure occurred at only 60k miles, despite the car being only 7 years old. Unfortunately, as a second owner, the warranty did not apply. While the experience was disappointing, it has led me to consider other options for my future vehicles.

We have had our GL for almost two years now and unfortunately, we have not been able to achieve the best mileage as we were initially told. We were informed that the break-in period was 3k, but it did not get better after that. We were then told that the break-in period is actually 5k, but still, it did not improve. We have been going in for regular check-ups after each required distance had been travelled, but each time we were told that the break-in period is actually longer than what we were previously told. After 5k, it was 7k, then 10k, then 12.5k, then 15k, and finally, we were told that under no circumstances is the break-in period less than 20k. We are now at over 29k and unfortunately, we are getting the worst mileage in the life of the car, which is between 11-14L/100 km. We are extremely disappointed with this outcome.

I drove my 2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited for 188,000 miles. I finally traded it in in May 2017. This was primarily my business vehicle for sales. Although I had some intermittent issues from pretty much day one, I was able to handle them myself. For instance, the inhibitor/neutral safety switch would go out at least once every 12 to 24 months, but it was an easily accessible part that costs $40 at the dealer. Another issue was the power steering, which would quit working at random, but I was able to pull over and restart the car to fix it. The brakes were not the best, especially in the rain, but I was always careful and never had any major issues. The steering wheel material started peeling off after about 40,000 miles, but it was just a minor cosmetic issue. There was also a very rare issue of the fuel pump ground wire not being properly grounded, but I was able to fix it myself. Lastly, my car was a part of the fuel mileage reimbursement, and although it took a while to get my last reimbursement, I was eventually able to receive it. Overall, I am grateful for the time I spent with my Hyundai Elantra, but I am excited to move on to a new vehicle.Don't get me wrong, I managed to get almost 200,000 miles out of it. However, it was not without dealing with a lot of problems. If I wouldn't have been a very mechanically inclined person, this car would have cost me hundreds of dollars in repairs minimum. I would advise you to avoid Hyundai or Kia. I have family members who own them and they have a ton of issues too.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I've had it since May 2011 and it only had 10 miles on it when I got it! Recently, I had some issues with the wheel bearings and spark plugs, but thankfully my 100,000 mile warranty covered it. I have noticed that the car can be a bit sluggish at times and the gas mileage isn't the best, averaging around 32 mpg. I mostly drive on the highway with some city driving, as well as backroads and hills. Unfortunately, the car seems to dent easily with door dings and even a small hail storm caused some damage. However, I have found that using V-Power gas makes it run a lot better, although it does cost more. One thing to note is that the seats seem to stain easily with just water. Overall, I still enjoy my car and hope to have it for many more years to come!

I purchased my 2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS last May with only 38,000 miles on it. Although it was fine for the first 6 months, I started experiencing issues with it soon after. Unfortunately, I had to replace all brakes, rotors, calipers, tires, coils, and spark plugs, and even had to get the seats professionally cleaned due to water stains. Despite all this, I was still having issues with the car and no one seemed to be able to find the root of the problem. When I went back to the Hyundai Dealer, they found a lot of metal in the oil pan and concluded that the engine was done. It was a tough situation as I still owed $10,000 on the car and Hyundai would only offer me $500 if I wanted to trade it in. I decided to replace the engine and hope to sell it for at least $6,000 so that I can trade it in for a new car. Although this car has caused some financial strain and has been unreliable, I am grateful for the lessons learned and look forward to finding a more dependable car.
