2008 Hyundai Elantra problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-14
- VIN: KMHDU46D88U
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: We received a citation for brake lights not functioning. I realized that there had been a safety recall on the brake light switch, and contacted Brandfon Hyundai in New Haven, CT. They did nothing. Upon further investigation on the Hyundai website, I noticed that the brake light switch campaign was marked "closed" in 2013, when the car was still owned by my mother-in-law whom has since gone blind and has sold the car to us. I took it upon myself to purchase and install a new brake light switch, and all new bulbs, but to no avail. Not only are we likely to get cited again, but having no brake lights is a safety hazard. At first, it was only the right side brake light out. Then the brake lights would stay on by themselves. Now, not even the rear window light, which should go on without the signal going through the computer, will go on.

Last week my 2008 Elantra exhibited all the signs of this malfunction (A knocking noise from the engine that increases in frequency as the engine rpm increases. Reduced power and/or hesitation and vibration. Illumination of the “check engine” light in the instrument cluster. Illumination of the “engine oil pressure” warning lamp.) When this occured i had taken it to Auto Zone and had the computer scanned for error codes. (See attached report). Based on the report a tune up was done, ignition coil replaced and sensor replaced. Car would still not start. When my mechanic furthe diagnosed it (he could not find the issue until he used his scope camera)he found the issue was that there is damage to the "trigger wheel" inside the crank shaft. He also said this almost never happens in a car and does not know what could have made this happen. Please investigate this issue further, this is a dangerous situation of engine seizing and should be investigated immediately and thoroughly.

This was covered last time under the Salt Belt Corrosion Class Action Settlement. Hyundai is aware there is still a problem, but the undercoating recall does not work and this is still a safety hazard and it may be the exact same part. I have called Torrington Hyundai and am waiting for the manager to call back and also called Hyundai Customer Care and new case was opened #20523632. I was told it would be 2 to 5 days to be contacted by National Consumer Affairs. I am without a car again and need this resolved immediately. This has been so dangerous, my son and I could have been killed!

The left rear tire was no longer attached to the frame of the car properly. It is available for inspection. It was a catastrophic failure, if we had being going faster it could have been deadly. Turns out Hyundai knew the materials they used were poor quality because in 2016 there was a service campaign for underbody corrosion treatment, which was completed on my vehicle. Fast forward to 2021, despite the corrosion treatment the sub-frame failed. My mechanic said the failure is not normal. Hyundai has not been responsive.
2008 Hyundai Elantra recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2008 Hyundai Elantra.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
- Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2007-2010 Elantra and 2009-2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. On February 21, 2020 Hyundai expanded the recall to include 46,425 model year 2007-2008 Entourage and 2007 Santa Fe vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.
- Consequence: An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the car is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will install a relay in the vehicle's main junction box to prevent the risk of an ABS short-circuit while the car is turned off, free of charge. The recall began April 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 188.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
- Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
- Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Elantra vehicles manufactured June 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010, and 2009-2010 Elantra Touring vehicles manufactured November 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010. The electronic power steering (EPS) electronic control unit (ECU) may sense a discrepancy in the steering input signals and, as a result, disable the steering power assist.
- Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai will verify the proper operation of the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and update the EPS control unit, free of charge. The recall began April 14, 2015. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 127.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
- Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
- Summary: HYUNDAI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 ELANTRA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 14, 2006, THROUGH AUGUST 29, 2007. THE DRIVER'S SEAT TRACK POSITION SENSOR DETERMINES THE SEAT'S FORE AND AFT POSITION AND ALLOWS THE DRIVER'S FRONTAL AIR BAG TO DEPLOY AT THE PRESSURE APPROPRIATE FOR THAT SEATING POSITION, WITH A LOWER PRESSURE DEPLOYMENT IN THE MOST FORWARD SEATING POSITIONS. THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE MAY RECEIVE AN UNSTABLE ELECTRICAL SIGNAL FROM THE SEAT TRACK POSITION SENSOR SUCH THAT, IN A CRASH THAT REQUIRES DRIVER FRONTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT, THE DRIVER'S AIRBAG MAY DEPLOY AT THE HIGHER PRESSURE THAN INTENDED IF THE SEAT WAS POSITION IN ONE OF THE FORWARD POSITIONS IN WHICH A LOWER PRESSURE DEPLOYMENT IS INTENDED.
- Consequence: A HIGHER PRESSURE DEPLOYMENT THAN INTENDED INCREASES THE RISK OF INJURY RESULTING FROM AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTING TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI'S CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

THE FRONT PASSENGER SEATS IN THE VEHICLES CONTAIN A WEIGHT SENSOR DESIGNED TO DEACTIVATE THE RIGHT FRONTAL AIRBAG WHEN OCCUPANTS OF CERTAIN WEIGHTS OCCUPY THE SEAT. THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR FOR THE WEIGHT SENSOR IS LOCATED UNDER THE CENTER CONSOLE, BETWEEN THE FRONT SEATS. UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES THE CONNECTOR COULD BECOME CONTAMINATED AND MALFUNCTION SUCH THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG WILL DEPLOY REGARDLESS OF THE WEIGHT OF THE OCCUPANT.
- Consequence: THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG COULD DEPLOY IN CRASHES IN WHICH IT SHOULD NOT DEPLOY, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT FROM THE DEPLOYED AIR BAG.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A PROTECTIVE COVER OVER THE WEIGHT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM CONNECTOR TO PREVENT CONTAMINATION. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTING TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI'S CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

I bought mine used with 86k miles. It currently has 233k miles and it's still going strong. It has been very reliable and does not burn oil. It's a great little car to run around town, and if you come across one in good shape, do not hesitate to get it!

Congratulations on your purchase of a 2008 Elantra GLS with a 5-speed and the popular equipment package for a great price in July 2008! It's wonderful to hear that you're enjoying your new car so much. As someone who used to be a strict 80s GM boat guy, it's great to see you branching out and discovering the joys of a new car. The Elantra is surprisingly quick and fuel-efficient, with an impressive MPG of 29-36 per tank. The interior is also surprisingly spacious, with a roomy back seat. Overall, it's clear that the quality of design in this car is top-notch. It's exciting to see Hyundai entering the same realm as Toyota and Honda did in the early 90s, and I have no doubt that in a few years, these cars will have the reputation they deserve!

You've done your research and test driven a range of higher MPG vehicles, and it's clear that the Hyundai is the clear winner. The warranty was a key factor in your decision, along with the price and incentives, of course. You were pleasantly surprised by how roomy the Elantra is, and it's comparable in size to your Ford Explorer Ltd. V8. The MPG is definitely a plus! You really enjoy driving this car, and it handles extremely well between cars. Unlike other similar cars you test drove, such as the Honda Fit, there's no 'drag'. In fact, this was the most impressive car you test drove, with the Nissan Sentra coming in a close second. However, the Hyundai beat the Sentra in terms of safety, warranty, and price, among other factors. It's no wonder your daughter wants one, and you're considering getting one for yourself too!

This car may not be the best option for long trips!

I really like this little car because it's such a big change from my old 77 Chevy Blazer, especially when it comes to gas mileage. It's reliable, small, cute, and quiet, which are all great features. However, I was a bit disappointed to find out that I paid too much for it - $18,000.00 plus tax after the $2000.00 rebate. When I see the same car for $14,000.00, it's hard not to feel a bit frustrated. Additionally, I've noticed that the seat material isn't very durable and stains easily. Despite these minor issues, I've managed to get up to 27.1 mpg on the freeway at 60 mph, which is pretty impressive. My car is the Gray colored one, but unfortunately, the paint scratches easily. In fact, my thumb nail has worn a scrape in the hollow spot of the outer door handle. As much as I like this car, I'm thinking about trading it in for a Toyota within the next year.

I bought my Elantra brand new in 2008. Unfortunately, I discovered that the windshield wipers were never connected during a heavy downpour on the highway with no breakdown lane. Later on, I had to take it to Pep Boys because of a flat tire, and they asked me when I had patched it. I was surprised because I thought it was new. The car had several recalls, including a malfunctioning CD player, a window that was slowly going down, and an airbag issue. After receiving the airbag recall notice, I decided to trade it in for a Volvo S60 with the premium package. I was able to break even with everything, including the mileage, price, and trade-in value. Now, I am the proud owner of a safe and luxurious car that is simply awesome!

The tint on my Elantra's windows is insufficient, causing the car to become extremely hot, even to the point of being able to heat up a meal if left on the dashboard. Living in the hot southern region, I have to cover my knees on long summer trips while wearing shorts, as the AC is somewhat inadequate unless run on high. Despite contacting Hyundai America, they have claimed that it is a problem for the dealership, which is disappointing in terms of customer satisfaction. This experience has led me to decide not to purchase another Hyundai vehicle.

Three things that bother me enough to write a review about them: Firstly, the doors only prop open at two widths, either so far that it would slam into the car parked next to you, or open just enough that you could slide a piece of paper through. This makes it difficult to get your bags of groceries out of the car without the door repeatedly slamming into you. Secondly, there is extremely poor visibility out of the back angled windows, which makes it necessary to back up and change lanes really slowly, hoping that no one crashes into you. Lastly, when the steering wheel locks, it requires a violent jerk to break it loose, which can be quite uncomfortable.

I purchased this Hyundai during a time when gas prices were very high and the reviews sounded promising. While the best mileage we achieved was 31 mpg for highway and around 27 mpg overall, we did experience some issues with water leaking into the trunk after rain, the hood popping open by itself, and minimal leg room in the back. Additionally, we found the seats to be cheap and uncomfortable, which became a problem for me after I experienced a back issue. As a result, we have decided to trade it in for a 2007 Honda Accord. The Accord is a larger car that gets the same mileage, has nicer upholstery, and will provide my back seat passengers with ample leg room, all while ensuring a comfortable ride for me and my back.

I bought this Elantra due to excellent reviews and perceived quality. You certainly get a lot of car for the money. Unfortunately my post purchase experience has been somewhat disappointing. Interior materials are cheap and are showing premature wear. Upholstery is especially poor. One recall on fuel pump. LR window track fell off, oil leak. Engine is very noisy when pushed and has a very dated design...still has a timing belt to be replaced. Decent drive but you do indeed get what you pay for...
