2010 Hyundai Elantra problems

The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).

First generation (J1; 1990)

The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.

It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.

The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Common 2010 Hyundai Elantra problems

The 2010 Hyundai Elantra is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include transmission problems, paint problems, steering problems, airbag problems, and recalls.

Transmission problems are the most prevalent and serious issue, with slipping transmissions typically appearing around 65,000 miles. The transmission must be replaced, which can cost over $3,000. Carcomplaints.com notes an emerging trend of transmission problems with the 2010 Elantra at fairly early mileage.

Paint problems are also a common issue, with many Elantras experiencing paint peeling at about 55,000 miles. When paint is not properly maintained, it starts to peel, and repainting the affected areas costs about $1,000 per panel.

Steering problems are another concern, with the EPS light turning on and the vehicle losing steering while driving. The affected vehicle loses control, and the steering wheel needs to be replaced. However, in some cases, even this procedure doesn't fix the issue. In the first 80,000 miles, the steering column begins to make clicking noises as well. The problem is with the steering column and coupling, which can be fixed for about $800.

Airbag problems are a significant safety concern, with airbags occasionally failing to inflate for the driver and passenger. Some 2010 Elantra owners state that airbags deploy without accidents or just when the car hits a bump on slow speed. There are four recalls, with the electronic power steering assistance recall being the most serious because it can fail and raise the risk of an accident.

In summary, the 2010 Hyundai Elantra has several common problems, including transmission issues, paint problems, steering problems, airbag problems, and recalls. These issues can significantly impact the vehicle's safety, reliability, and overall value.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-12
  • VIN: KMHDU4AD5AU
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: My 2010 Elantra just started making a clicking noise when slightly turning the steering wheel back and forth. Doing online research, I discovered it is a common problem on Hyundai, with the same symptoms as my problem, that there is a rubber star damper gear in the electronic motor system inside the steering column that fails, it completely falls apart, and is very common defect in these vehicles. No warning lamp was illuminated. I am now stuck without a car that I can not drive for fear the whole steering may fail. Because it involves the steering, Hyundai is putting all our safety at risk knowing there is a problem with this “cheap rubber” gear part that controls the steering and is prone to failing. The fix is around $800. Many people have complained on UTube comments. Hyundai should be made to recall and fix all these defective Hyundai vehicles. As a safety authority, NHTSA should stop unsafe vehicle production practices when uncovered and dealers force to fix them all.

They then raised the car in the shop and told me that the rear upper-control arm had rusted through and broken, causing the wheel to break off. They showed me a photo of this. I was also told that had this happened on a highway at a higher speed, there could have been fatalities because control of the car would have been seriously affected. I contacted Hyundai about this and they told me to take to a dealer to be looked at. I refused to pay for this inspection and I now do not trust Hyundai.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-22
  • VIN: KMHDB8AE4AU
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I have a 2010 Hyundai Elantra. On Saturday, July 22, 2023, after the car was put into park in my fathers driveway and the emergency brake put on, the front driver and passenger bags deployed. The force of it's deployment cracked the windshield in several places on the passenger side. There were no warning lights or indications that this would occur. The car was in park. The seatbelts are in a locked (not able to retract) form, so the car is not drivable. The two individuals in the front seat were disoriented for a short time. All 4 passengers in the car experienced ringing in the ears for approximately 3 hours, but are ultimately, physically alright, however, not mentally. If this had occurred in another setting, the risk of accident or other safety measures would have been grand, but luckily it happened at the home of a family member. The airbag malfunction needs to be eligible to be fixed and not at the expense of me the owner. The car has a camera located in it and it captured all items listed above. The video may be provided. The Hyundai corporate office has been contacted and an incident file opened. The insurance company has been contacted, as well. Nothing has been done with the car, as the corporate office noted that they may need to see it in it's original state.

2010 Hyundai Elantra recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra.

2020-02-04
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2007-2010 Elantra and 2009-2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. On February 21, 2020 Hyundai expanded the recall to include 46,425 model year 2007-2008 Entourage and 2007 Santa Fe vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.
  • Consequence: An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the car is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will install a relay in the vehicle's main junction box to prevent the risk of an ABS short-circuit while the car is turned off, free of charge. The recall began April 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 188.
2015-02-23
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
  • Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Elantra vehicles manufactured June 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010, and 2009-2010 Elantra Touring vehicles manufactured November 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010. The electronic power steering (EPS) electronic control unit (ECU) may sense a discrepancy in the steering input signals and, as a result, disable the steering power assist.
  • Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will verify the proper operation of the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and update the EPS control unit, free of charge. The recall began April 14, 2015. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 127.
2013-04-01
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

Negative 2010 Hyundai Elantra car reviews

  1. Presley Quitzon 2024-10-11

I, like many others, had a suspension nightmare with my brand new car. It's disappointing that a new car can have such a rough ride, especially when compared to my old 1994 Chevy Cavalier which was much smoother. During the test drive, I convinced myself that the bumpy ride was all in my head, but on my way home from purchasing my Elantra, I realized that it was a real issue. I would advise anyone looking to purchase an Elantra to test the car with close attention and be mindful of the suspension performance. I hope that the manufacturer will address this issue in future models.

  2. Donny Hamill 2024-10-10

After reading your review on the 2010 Elantra Blue, I would like to share my thoughts. While I understand your initial confusion regarding its positive performance grades, I must say that my experience with the automatic version has been quite satisfactory. I have test driven the 2010 Elantra and found it to be a smooth and comfortable ride. However, I do understand that personal preferences may vary. In regards to the number of forward speeds, I believe it is sufficient for most driving situations. As for the upshifting, I have not experienced any issues with it. Overall, I believe the Elantra is a reliable and efficient car that offers great value for its price. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the matter.

  3. Timmothy Rippin 2024-09-08

The car's interior is affordable yet comfortable. It boasts a quiet cabin compared to its competitors, and the ride is comfortable with acceptable handling quality. If you're looking for a more exciting ride, consider upgrading to the SE edition to increase handling properties. However, it's worth noting that some customers have reported issues with their vehicles after less than two months of ownership, including a squeaky noise when turning the steering wheel and knocking sounds with minor vibrations from the rear wheels when going over 20 MPH.

The rough winter roads of the northern mid-west can be a challenge, but unfortunately, my new car has not lived up to my expectations. Despite being a new car, the ride quality is extremely poor, with every bump being felt twice - once in the front and once in the back. The suspension is so tight that it causes discomfort, making it impossible to enjoy a beverage while on the move. The car's mileage is also not up to par, with only 27mpg. In comparison to our 2009 Toyota Corolla, the ride quality is vastly inferior. Despite the dealership's claims that this is how the car is built, I am confident that this will be the last Hyundai I purchase.

The steering of my car is jerky and it wants to dart right or left. Additionally, it makes a lot of creaking noise when going over small bumps. I am confident that I can find a solution to these issues and improve the overall performance of the car.

I've had my Elantra GLS for 3 months now and I'm getting 31mph around town. While the seat isn't very comfortable for a tall man, overall the car is great in terms of performance. It's even better than my Toyotas, Renaults, or VWs. Plus, it looks good too!

Congratulations on your new Natural Khaki GLS! It sounds like you got a great deal on the car, which is always a plus. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the car and that it drives smoothly. It's great that you were able to cancel the extended warranty and save some money. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

The brakes can be a bit touchy at low speeds, causing a slight jerk for passengers with just a slight touch at 2 mph. However, they work perfectly fine at driving speeds. Additionally, I have noticed that when I push the driver door open, there is a tendency for it to inadvertently lock, which I only discover when I try to re-enter the car. Other than these minor issues, the car is great!

I really appreciate this car! It rides so smoothly and the XM radio is a fantastic feature that I didn't realize I needed until now.
