Toyota 4runner problems

The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

Common Toyota 4runner problems
The Toyota 4Runner, a popular SUV known for its reliability, has faced several common problems across different model years. These issues include braking system problems, rust/body/paint problems, damaged/cracked dashboards, and transmission issues.
Braking system problems have been particularly prevalent in the 4Runner, with models from 2014 to 2017 struggling with brake system issues. Owners have reported temporary brake failure, locking up, warping issues, and premature wear on the front brake rotor and brake master cylinder.
Rust/body/paint problems are another concern, especially for the 4th-generation 4Runners. These models, produced between 2003 and 2005, are particularly susceptible to rust and corrosion damage, which can appear around 150,000 miles. Owners have reported that their 4Runners ran fine until a shop visit revealed that the frame and suspension were badly rusted/corroded.
Damaged or cracked dashboards have been a common complaint with 2004 4Runners. Dashboards exposed under direct sunlight have melted or been damaged somehow, and this issue doesn't just look unsightly; it may also prevent airbag deployment.
Transmission issues have affected 4Runner model years from 1990 to 2016. These problems result in rough shifting and loss of power, often due to a faulty shift solenoid or throttle position sensor, both requiring replacement to fix.
In addition to these issues, the 2010-2016 fifth-generation 4Runner, 2006-2007 fourth-generation 4Runner, 1996-1998 third-generation 4Runner, 1990-1993 second-generation 4Runner with a 2.4-liter I4, and 1986-1987 first-generation 4Runner with a 2.4-liter I4 have fewer reported issues but may still experience some problems.
When considering a Toyota 4Runner, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and consider the potential costs and inconveniences associated with them.
Is the Toyota 4Runner a reliable car?
A: Yes, with faithful care and maintenance, high-mileage 4Runners can still be very reliable. It's not uncommon to see these vehicles on the road with over 300,000 miles. However, know that high mileage vehicles are always a gamble – they may either be on their last mile or run for 100k miles more.
What is the best year for a Toyota 4Runner?
The best used Toyota 4Runner years according to generation are as follows. The fifth-generation Toyota 4Runner received the least complaints from 2017 to 2021. In 2017, the complaints from customers dropped out of the double-digit range, and in 2021, only one complaint was lodged against it.
How long should a Toyota 4Runner last?
A Toyota 4Runner can reach 300,000 miles with meticulous maintenance but expect closer to 200,000 miles. The 4Runner is susceptible to Toyota's rust issues. Owners say rust and corrosion are common, and noticeable after only a few years on the road.
Are 4Runners high maintenance?
The average total annual cost for repairs and maintenance on a Toyota 4Runner is $514, compared to an average of $573 for midsize SUVs and $652 for all vehicle models.

Toyota 4runner 2013
- Date Of Incident: 2020-06-12
- Date Complaint: 2024-08-01
- VIN: JTEBU5JR7D5
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Make: Toyota Model: 4Runner Year: 2013 Mileage: 76,200 Description of Incident While driving on [XXX] at night, the vehicle experienced a sudden and catastrophic engine failure, leaving it immobilized in the middle of the highway. This presented an immediate and severe safety risk to both the vehicle occupants and other motorists. The failure was later determined to be caused by a malfunction in the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) oil control system, specifically an Exhaust Cam Gear failure. This led to a broken timing chain and subsequent engine failure. Inspection and Diagnosis The vehicle was inspected by an authorized Toyota Dealer in Florence, SC. They confirmed the failure of the oil control system and recommended a complete engine replacement, estimating costs over $5,000. Broader Implications and Potential Safety Hazard Further investigation, including consultations with multiple Toyota technicians, review of technical discussions on various platforms, and examination of online 4Runner forums, suggests that this issue is not isolated. Failures of the exhaust cam gear and problems with the VVT Oil Control System appear to be common in the Toyota 1GR-FE Engine and other engines equipped with this system. It's noteworthy that Toyota issued a voluntary recall in 2014 (Safety Recall 13V-395, TM-TC-14021) for Lexus vehicles with similar issues. However, this recall does not appear to cover the 2013 1GR-FE 4Runner engine, despite the apparent similarity in potential failure modes. Safety Concerns This issue presents a significant safety hazard: Sudden engine failure at highway speeds can lead to loss of vehicle control. Unexpected vehicle immobilization, especially at night or in high-traffic areas, poses a severe collision risk. The apparent widespread nature of this issue suggests that many vehicles may be at risk of similar failures. Urgency for Action Given the severity of the potential outcomes and the ap INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Vehicle year: 2016
Looking for a vehicle that delivers better 4WD performance than your typical 'Crossover'? The Toyota 4 Runner fits that bill perfectly. I have looked at everything in this segment and found the 4 Runner to be the best overall in terms of comfort, performance, quality and value. Don't be put off by reviews that talk about how body on frame vehicles cannot deliver the same ride and handling quality as the typical unibody. The 4 Runner does not ride or handle like a truck, and while certainly not car-like, it rolls down the road smoothly and confidently. My main requirement was to be able to drive up a very steep and long driveway during New England winters. Other AWD vehicles like Subaru and Rav 4 could not handle the job if there was more than a couple of inches of snow on the ground. The 4 Runner has absolutely no problems with any snow depth. Sure, I could have bought an Audi Q series, but for the money and maintenance costs over the long run, you just can't beat the Toyota 4 Runner.

Vehicle year: 2008
I chose the 4Runner Sport V6 RWD based on its reliability and looks, despite the RAV4 Sport V6 having better gas mileage and a more sports-car-like performance. This is my first SUV, and I'm still getting used to sitting higher up and the truck-like feel of the car (compared to the Tacoma versus the RAV4). It's worth noting that my perspective is based on previously driving an Audi A3 and BMW 3. The Galactic Gray Mica is stunning, and I receive compliments on it frequently (it's brighter with a blue sparkle than most dull grays). The V6 provides plenty of power for urban driving, and I get a respectable 22mpg on the highway (19.5 mpg mixed). The X-REAS suspension works exceptionally well, providing a comfortable ride on twisty roads.

Vehicle year: 1998
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my SUV that I bought back in August 1998. I've driven it for over 113,000 miles and it has been a reliable companion throughout the years. The fit and finish are still excellent even after 8 years of ownership. Mechanically, the car has been virtually maintenance free, which is amazing! Although, I did have some trouble with the stereo and the power antenna, which had to be replaced a few times. On the bright side, I still get compliments on this vehicle 8+ years later. The paint and overall look still is appealing. I would highly recommend this SUV to anyone looking for a highly reliable SUV. Thanks for reading!

Vehicle year: 1990
I bought a Toyota 1990 4 Runner brand new and it has been a great vehicle. I have only had to fix minor things and it has taken me where I want to go, even with 224,000 miles on it!

Vehicle year: 2015
After much deliberation between the 4Runner, Ford Explorer, V6 Subaru Outback, and the quickly dismissed Nissan XTerra, I finally decided to go with the Toyota. I absolutely love this vehicle, except for a few minor things. For instance, I'm not a fan of the eco-drive, which cannot be disabled (if my research has proven anything). I'd rather have all six cylinders pumping 100% of the time, even at the cost of losing a few mpg. The power just feels like it lags a little bit, but then again, I did just come off a V8 Mustang... I digress. Speaking of mpg, my average mpg is very solid! From (odometer) 5,000-10,000 miles in the vehicle with approximately 10% off-roading, 50% city, 40% highway miles, I averaged 19.5 mpg - not bad for a 4x4. Another little nitpick I have is the 4x4 electronic knob - I mean, come on. If you have read any review at all on this ride, then of course you know about squirrely handling - on pavement, that is. Sure it may not hug corners like a car; sure it may have more body rolling action than a Beyonce music video; and sure, I think it may be just ever-so-slightly underpowered. But let's be real, no vehicle is perfect. This was just the ride that I felt would be most dependable, most comfortable, and have the best quality for MANY years to come. All in all, I couldn't be happier with my purchase. *UPDATE @ 16500 miles: I still love this vehicle, and I'm still highly satisfied with it. However, after having to (safely) dodge a few deer at night, I somewhat changed my stance on the handling - and the performance as well. The handling suffers on the highway. Period. Is it enough for me to get angry with it? Nah. During a windy storm, you just have to slow down. Despite my previous review, I do think an option for a V8 under the hood should be available. If, and BIG 'if', Toyota listened to me and bestowed upon us a V8 option, I'm not even sure I would trade mine in. **UPDATE @ 32000: A few things have become clearer to me:I have had some issues with my Toyota recently. I have visited three different dealerships, but unfortunately, none of them were able to balance my tires correctly. One even suggested that my wheels needed realignment. Additionally, I had a flat tire and tried to change it with the spare, but the factory car jack was not able to lift the vehicle high enough to change the tire. I would recommend getting a new jack. Although the audio system has a few glitches, it is still one of the easiest ones to use in a vehicle and maintains a reliable connection to my phone/music. Lastly, I have noticed that the leatherette on my center console has begun to warp and come loose due to excessive UV exposure. It is important to note that the door material may begin to do the same in the future. Overall, I have had a good experience with my Toyota, but there have been a few minor issues.***UPDATE @ 43000: Nothing much has changed other than a creaky-like squeak that seems to propagate throughout the entire frame (began around 36000 miles). Reading through some of the online forums, I've found that it is likely due to the bushings lacking adequate lubrication, frame flexure, and/or the suspension.***UPDATE @ 67000 miles: Turns out the creaking came from my grill guard stiffening the front frame which made the noise... So I removed it. I traded this vehicle in a couple of months back. Why? Because there was a dealership incentive and they offered me $6k less than when I bought it new. But, I'm happy to say that I upgraded to the 2018 TRD Pro version of the same vehicle. If you're wondering, the TRD Pro drives and handles even better both on and off-road. It's amazing how well all 4Runners hold their value, despite the archaic infrastructure. This is the 11th year on the same platform - going on 12! While there are bigger, better, badder, faster, stronger (in a towing sense), and smarter vehicles out there, I've found that this vehicle has an old soul in a new era, which is why I appreciate it so much.

Vehicle year: 1992
As a Chevy mechanic and a proud owner of a Yota, I can say that I prefer not to work on my own vehicles after a long week of work. While my truck is reliable, it lacks power and can be difficult to work on. I have found that my 1987 Toyota pickup with 200K on it is actually faster! Additionally, my 85 4runner handled better than this truck, which tends to pull poorly and get blown around on the highway. I have decided to sell it and get a used Tahoe or Suburban instead. These vehicles have a more reliable engine and are easier to work on if they break down.

Vehicle year: 1991
Toyota replaced the head gasket as part of their recall, but unfortunately, the engine blew just 2 weeks later. I was disappointed to find out that they didn't even guarantee their work. Additionally, I found the SUV to be surprisingly uncomfortable, as my knees would cramp up on long drives. Although I am 6' tall with long legs, I couldn't find a comfortable position. However, I do appreciate the tire on the back, which is a nice feature. It's worth noting that after 1991, they decided to put the spare tire under the back end, which can make it more difficult to change the tire.

At 100k miles, the transmission needed to be replaced. Additionally, the driver's seat fabric is separating at the seam and the seat belt retractor is sluggish, causing the belt buckle to get caught in the door.

Although it may not be the most nimble car and has poor fuel economy (14 mpg in mixed driving), it starts every time and does well in the snow. While rust can be a problem, it offers good headroom, although legroom may be limited for those 6' or taller. While I don't drive it every day, I have found it to be reliable for my limited needs. Overall, I would recommend it for those looking for a dependable car for occasional use.
Hoyt Huel 2025-07-14
Vehicle year: 2010
I purchased this vehicle because it had a high rating, even though it was more expensive than other models from competitors. Reliability is important to me. However, I have experienced significant rust on the frame after only a few years, which has resulted in expensive repairs. The fire shield rusted off and had to be removed, and now the massive skid plate bracket has also rusted off. Toyota service removed the entire unrepairable skid plate due to the level of rust, and the mechanics were afraid to scrape or chip any more rust because they were concerned that other parts would fall off and make the vehicle unsafe to drive. They confirmed that this level of rust on the frame is excessive and should not happen. The official Toyota Repair Estimate to fix the rusting, failing frame and make it safe again is $17,783.71, which is half the value of a brand new vehicle. Toyota Corporate has recalled many other rusting frames on their other models because they should not have rusted the way they did, but unfortunately, they will not stand behind my 4Runner, which I paid $34,000 for. I have been told that it is the same frame as some of the other recalled models. The Toyota Corporation tried to comfort me by ensuring me that they logged my case and will contact me via First Class mail if they ever do decide to stand behind their product and make good on my $18,000 pile of useless rust.
