Toyota 4runner problems

The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

Common Toyota 4runner problems
The Toyota 4Runner, a popular SUV known for its reliability, has faced several common problems across different model years. These issues include braking system problems, rust/body/paint problems, damaged/cracked dashboards, and transmission issues.
Braking system problems have been particularly prevalent in the 4Runner, with models from 2014 to 2017 struggling with brake system issues. Owners have reported temporary brake failure, locking up, warping issues, and premature wear on the front brake rotor and brake master cylinder.
Rust/body/paint problems are another concern, especially for the 4th-generation 4Runners. These models, produced between 2003 and 2005, are particularly susceptible to rust and corrosion damage, which can appear around 150,000 miles. Owners have reported that their 4Runners ran fine until a shop visit revealed that the frame and suspension were badly rusted/corroded.
Damaged or cracked dashboards have been a common complaint with 2004 4Runners. Dashboards exposed under direct sunlight have melted or been damaged somehow, and this issue doesn't just look unsightly; it may also prevent airbag deployment.
Transmission issues have affected 4Runner model years from 1990 to 2016. These problems result in rough shifting and loss of power, often due to a faulty shift solenoid or throttle position sensor, both requiring replacement to fix.
In addition to these issues, the 2010-2016 fifth-generation 4Runner, 2006-2007 fourth-generation 4Runner, 1996-1998 third-generation 4Runner, 1990-1993 second-generation 4Runner with a 2.4-liter I4, and 1986-1987 first-generation 4Runner with a 2.4-liter I4 have fewer reported issues but may still experience some problems.
When considering a Toyota 4Runner, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and consider the potential costs and inconveniences associated with them.
Is the Toyota 4Runner a reliable car?
A: Yes, with faithful care and maintenance, high-mileage 4Runners can still be very reliable. It's not uncommon to see these vehicles on the road with over 300,000 miles. However, know that high mileage vehicles are always a gamble – they may either be on their last mile or run for 100k miles more.
What is the best year for a Toyota 4Runner?
The best used Toyota 4Runner years according to generation are as follows. The fifth-generation Toyota 4Runner received the least complaints from 2017 to 2021. In 2017, the complaints from customers dropped out of the double-digit range, and in 2021, only one complaint was lodged against it.
How long should a Toyota 4Runner last?
A Toyota 4Runner can reach 300,000 miles with meticulous maintenance but expect closer to 200,000 miles. The 4Runner is susceptible to Toyota's rust issues. Owners say rust and corrosion are common, and noticeable after only a few years on the road.
Are 4Runners high maintenance?
The average total annual cost for repairs and maintenance on a Toyota 4Runner is $514, compared to an average of $573 for midsize SUVs and $652 for all vehicle models.

Toyota 4runner 2013
- Date Of Incident: 2020-06-12
- Date Complaint: 2024-08-01
- VIN: JTEBU5JR7D5
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Make: Toyota Model: 4Runner Year: 2013 Mileage: 76,200 Description of Incident While driving on [XXX] at night, the vehicle experienced a sudden and catastrophic engine failure, leaving it immobilized in the middle of the highway. This presented an immediate and severe safety risk to both the vehicle occupants and other motorists. The failure was later determined to be caused by a malfunction in the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) oil control system, specifically an Exhaust Cam Gear failure. This led to a broken timing chain and subsequent engine failure. Inspection and Diagnosis The vehicle was inspected by an authorized Toyota Dealer in Florence, SC. They confirmed the failure of the oil control system and recommended a complete engine replacement, estimating costs over $5,000. Broader Implications and Potential Safety Hazard Further investigation, including consultations with multiple Toyota technicians, review of technical discussions on various platforms, and examination of online 4Runner forums, suggests that this issue is not isolated. Failures of the exhaust cam gear and problems with the VVT Oil Control System appear to be common in the Toyota 1GR-FE Engine and other engines equipped with this system. It's noteworthy that Toyota issued a voluntary recall in 2014 (Safety Recall 13V-395, TM-TC-14021) for Lexus vehicles with similar issues. However, this recall does not appear to cover the 2013 1GR-FE 4Runner engine, despite the apparent similarity in potential failure modes. Safety Concerns This issue presents a significant safety hazard: Sudden engine failure at highway speeds can lead to loss of vehicle control. Unexpected vehicle immobilization, especially at night or in high-traffic areas, poses a severe collision risk. The apparent widespread nature of this issue suggests that many vehicles may be at risk of similar failures. Urgency for Action Given the severity of the potential outcomes and the ap INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1997 4Runner SR5. It lasted over 350,000 miles and was the most solid piece of equipment I've ever owned! When the engine finally failed (broke a rod), I knew I had to stick with Toyota and get a new 4Runner. So far, my new one has gone over 19,000 miles without any adjustments or repairs. Did you know that the 4Runner is one of the few Toyota models made completely in Japan? The fit and finish reflect the excellence of craftsmanship. Thanks for listening!

I completely agree with Jeef's review regarding the transmission. It seems to have some serious issues. When I take my foot off the gas pedal, the car shifts down and instead of coasting, the increased rpm slows it down. It even shifts into first gear at speeds as high as 14 mph, which causes a jerky bounce when you re-accelerate, only to immediately realize its mistake and shift into the (also very short) second gear. All in all, this makes the car quite annoying to drive. Additionally, the car is overall too smart for its own good. For instance, it won't let you turn off the air intake when in defog mode, which can be frustrating. Another issue is that the 4WD does not engage or disengage when you need it, which can be inconvenient.

This is the BEST car you have ever owned! You purchased it new in 1999 and have never had any problems with the engine or transmission. You change the oil approximately every 10,000 to 20,000 miles and use synthetic Castrol, since day one. You replaced the timing belt around 200,000 miles and it's almost time for another one. You've owned many cars through the years but this one is truly outstanding!

The 4Runner is one of the most reliable long-term ownership SUVs out there. The statistics on how many are still on the road are off the charts, with over 90% still running. That's why I purchased mine. In addition to the 4Runner, we also have a Highlander, which has more space and is better for my wife and daughter. However, it lacks the truck-like qualities I wanted, hence the 4Runner.

This vehicle has impressive off-road capabilities. What's great about it is that you don't have to sacrifice highway manners for locking differentials. It's perfect for driving to church or the mountains, and I even prefer it over my Lexus for everyday use. The Bluetooth and navigation system are top-notch, and the ride is incredibly quiet. As someone who has always owned 4-wheel drive vehicles, I find that this one is a perfect match for me. Unfortunately, I was involved in an accident where another vehicle attempted to make a turn at a high rate of speed and struck my Four Runner in the left front wheel area. Thankfully, the vehicle was able to withstand the impact and only required some parts to be replaced. It looks and performs like new again - truly one tough vehicle!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my recent purchase of a 4Runner. Unfortunately, I have to say that this one didn't quite meet my expectations. In fact, it was the cheapest and poorest example of a 4Runner that I've ever bought. I've owned 6 of them since 1989, and this one just doesn't compare to my previous 5. I would recommend considering other options before spending 40 grand like I did. Thanks for listening!

Your vehicle has been reliable so far, but unfortunately, it has developed a major issue with frame corrosion near the muffler. This issue needs to be fixed before it can pass inspection. Despite this issue, the rest of the car is in perfect condition, except for the chrome bumpers which have already been replaced. I have found many people on the internet who have had similar experiences. Have you had a similar experience? Let's discuss and see if we can find a solution together.

This vehicle has a unique design, with a V6 engine on a light truck chassis and a distinctive turtle-shell body. However, it may not be the best choice for those who prioritize power and speed, as it struggles to accelerate and can feel unstable on slick roads. On the other hand, the interior is comfortable and practical, with flawless electrical and exceptional mechanical features. Overall, it has an appealing quality, but it may not be the ideal option for everyone.

As a human, it's natural to focus on the negatives first. However, let's address those right off the bat. Firstly, when towing a 5x8 utility trailer for around the house work, the 4Runner lacks power to tow. Compared to my previous 2011 FJ Cruiser, the FJ towed better, had better off the line acceleration and shifted much smoother. Secondly, the radio is not up to par. There is no getting around it, it just stinks. Thirdly, the gaskets around the doors tend to fall right off, which may be minor, but for a new vehicle, you expect better, especially from Toyota. Fourthly, the tires are not suitable for all types of driving other than highway. I feel insecure making an emergency evasive maneuver with an already top-heavy vehicle and trip easy tire. However, there are many good things about the 4Runner. Firstly, my family tends to do a lot of beach driving and I trust the 4Runner on soft sands more than the Highlander. Secondly, the back window rolls down, and our lab just hangs her two front legs out and enjoys all the fumes from the exhaust that seem to recirculate. Thirdly, like my FJ, I never fear it won't start. In college, I had Tacomas that endured hell with miles closing in on 150k. I had worse luck with Nissan and Chevy, so I will probably always be a Toyota guy. Lastly, I just love it. There is no other vehicle under 50K that meets all my needs. With two adults in the front, two kids in the back seats, and two dogs in the rear, we find the beach is more fun, the trips to snowy mountains are less fearful, and we can pull right up to a soccer field incline and watch the crossovers circle for hours hunting for parking. The 4Runner suits all my check marks for a vehicle without being a truck and yet is still a fun toy.If you're looking for a 4Runner, I would personally recommend waiting for the 6th generation to arrive. The power train is due for an overhaul and hopefully, the grill won't always look like it's frowning. Just my two cents. I ended up trading it in for a Tundra because I needed to tow more. I do wish they made 4Runners with a V8, better brakes, and wider for comfort.

I had a great experience with my 2003 4Runner, so when it was time for a new car, I decided to go with a 2010 4Runner. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. The acceleration was slow, the interior felt cheap, and the instrument panel was backlit with a red light that I didn't like. The transmission also shifted too early and the engine sounded weak. It was a big disappointment compared to my previous 4Runner, which was almost as luxurious as a Lexus. The computer-controlled transmission caused a delay in acceleration, which was a safety concern for me. After 6 months of ownership, I decided to trade it in for a 2008 4Runner.
