The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

The problem is that the actuator gets stuck and at one point I was locked inside my car and once I was locked outside my car. If there was an emergency it could put mine and others safety at risk if the lock fails. The vehicle was inspected by Toyota who stated the actuators need to be replaced at $805 a piece and will not fix it themselves even though it is a known problem. This happened within the last month.

- Summary: Steering shudder at 58-70 MPH has become almost unbearable. No warning lights whatsoever - ever! Vehicle has had this issue since 30K miles (110K currently) and Toyota always is "unable to replicate the issue" or tells people this is common on the 4 Runners and Tacoma's. I won't go to dealers anymore since Toyota knows it's a problem and they direct the dealers not to report to keep the issue cluster diluted. Any visible wheel shake, no matter what speed should not be considered "common". Just replaced all 4 tires with Pirelli Scorpions, did the recommended Toyota road force balance and had everything aligned. Doesn't drive any differently than with the old tires and out of alignment. Perhaps if the Toyota brass had to drive their OWNfamily in this vehicle, they would take a different position. Guess it will unfortunately take some highway fatalities in these vehicles before manufacturer or governments act. I'm praying for a class-action suit as there are 1000s of 4 Runner customers experiencing the same issue. Many of whom have sold at a loss just to get away from an unsafe vehicle. First Toyota I've owned and it will be the last.

- Summary: Three of the four locks do not work on a consistent basis. The fourth lock works on occasion. Neither the key fob or the actual key will open the doors on the vehicle. The front driver door lock was replaced while under warranty, but broke again in under a month. The front passenger door lock was replaced at an out of pocket cost, but it also in a stopped working in a matter of weeks. There are times when the only access to the vehicle is through the trunk. The safety for all passengers is at risk because you cannot enter the vehicle in case of emergency or even on a daily basis. Also, the locks may not work when you are inside the vehicle and need to exit. This is an extreme safety issue in case of emergency. The locks have been replaced twice and the dealer acknowledged there is an issue with this year and model. The locks were inspected by the Toyota dealership when they had to be replaced. It is a well known defect which is commented on countless vehicle websites. There were no warning messages, the locks just stopped working. The date listed below is an approximation. I am aware of the year.

- Summary: This is our third Toyota 4Runner with the "X-REAS Sport Enhancement Suspension System". There has been some type of failure of this system on all 3 of the 4Runners we have owned. The latest problem with this suspension system on our 2015 4Runner was discovered during a Toyota dealership service appointment at 42,091 miles. It was recommended the full X-REAS system, front and rear shocks with lines and actuators be completely replaced since both front shocks are leaking fluid at a cost of $4,000. Since this is our third 4Runner with this suspension and related problems it is our fear that this suspension system might fail when driving and possibly cause an incident with who knows what could happen. We have brought this to the attention of the Toyota Customer Experience Center and in communication with them they offered to minimally assist financially with repairs, but provided no acknowledgement as to our experience with three 4Runners and this problem plagued suspension system we have encountered. We declined their assistance since we felt repairing this system and possibly in two or three years being faced with similar repair bills it would be a waste of money on their part as well as ours. In the meantime we continue to drive this vehicle as we need it and we are hopeful that our safety will not be compromised.

THEY WOULD TELL ME THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THAT THEY UPDATED THE COMPUTER CHIP AND IT "SHOULD BE GOOD". THIS DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. I WAS ABLE TO VIDEO TAPE THE PROBLEM AND SHOWED THE VIDEO TO THE SERVICE MANAGER. HE HAD ME SEND HIM MY VIDEO AND SAID HE NEEDED TO TALK TO CORPORATE. AFTER 2 MONTHS AND MULTIPLE PHONE CALLS TO HIM HE SAID THEY HAD SEEN THIS PROBLEM IN OTHER VEHICLES AT OTHER DEALERSHIPS AND CORPORATE APPROVED HIM TO REPLACE THE COMPUTER FREE OF CHARGE SINCE MY CONCERNS HAD BEEN DOCUMENTED AT MANY SERVICE INTERVALS WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. EACH SET OF 60K WARRANTY TIRES ONLY LASTED 30K MILES AND I WAS NOT ABLE TO GET ANY REPLACEMENT TIRES. THE ALIGNMENT PROBLEM CAUSES PREMATURE TIRE WEAR, SHAKING IN THE STEERING WHEEL AND AN OVERALL ROUGH RIDE. WHEN I DRIVE OVER 6OK MILES PER HOUR THE SHAKE AND ROUGH RIDE IS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE AND DISAPPOINTING IN SUCH AN EXPENSIVE VEHICLE.

AT APPROXIMATELY 55,000 MILES THE SERVICE TECH FOUND THAT ALL FOUR STRUTS WERE LEAKING AND REQUIRED $4,500 TO REPAIR AND REPLACE. A VISIT TO A SECOND DEALERSHIP CONFIRMED THE DIAGNOSTIC OUTCOME PROVIDED BY THE FIRST DEALER. I CONTACTED TOYOTA WHO STATED THE WARRANTY HAD LAPSED AND EXPRESSED NO DESIRE TO INVESTIGATE WHY AT 55,000 THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM SEALS AT ALL FOUR WHEELS WOULD FAIL. CONVERSATIONS WITH OTHER OWNERS OF THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL OUTLINED SIMILAR EXPERIENCES. THE SUSPENSION BECAME A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IT BECAME SO SOFT CERTAIN EMERGENCY MANEUVERS WOULD LIKELY RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL. WHEN I HAD THE SYSTEM REPLACED I DIRECTED THAT ALL THE REMOVED PARTS BE RETURNED TO ME AND I HAVE THEM SAVED FOR POSSIBLE INSPECTION. I ALSO HAVE PHOTOS OF THE STRUTS TAKEN DURING THE ORIGINAL INSPECTION. I BELIEVE THIS OCCURRED BECAUSE THE SUSPENSION WAS POORLY DESIGNED AND DEFECTIVE. TOYOTA SEEMED TO POSSIBLY ADDRESS THIS IN TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN #T-SB-0145-11. I BELIEVE TOYOTA SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR POOR DESIGN AND PROVIDE FREE REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT TO ITS PRODUCT OWNERS.

On March 4, 2020, Toyota expanded the recall to include certain 2014-2015 Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser, 2018 Avalon, Corolla, 2014 FJ Cruiser, 2017 Sienna and Lexus 2018 ES 350, 2018-2019 GS 300, 2013-2014 GS350, 2014-2015 GX 460, IS 350 and LX 570, 2014 IS F, 2018-2019 IS 350, LC 500H and LS 500H, 2013-2015 LS 460, 2015 NX 200T and RC350, 2017 RC 200T and RX 350. Toyota also removed the 2018-2019 Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser and 2018-2019 Lexus GX 460 and LX 570 and 2019 NX300 from inclusion in this recall. On March 19, 2020, Toyota expanded the recall to include 2015 Lexus GS350 vehicles. The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.
- Consequence: If the fuel pump fails, the engine can stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. The recall began May 4, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 20TB02 and 20TA02 for Toyota vehicles and 20LB01 and 20LA01 for Lexus vehicles.

Took it to Ouray Colorado and it was a blast! It did everything I wanted, from Jeep trails to anywhere I wanted to go. The ride there from Texas and back was great. It drives like a Lexus, climbs like a Jeep, and rides like a Lexus.

My 2017 Limited 4X4 is about 8 months old now and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any issues with it. I opted for the 4X4 Limited at $45,300 and it has been worth every penny. I planned to tow a 16' boat and the four wheel drive helps for pulling out of the boat ramp. I also chose the optional 3rd row seat and I'm glad I did because we've loaded up with family and friends on several occasions when no one else's vehicle could fit us all. I'm averaging 20.1 mpg combined city and hwy miles everyday to and from work, which is great. One thing I noticed that affects my mpg is when I use the AC in the summertime I go down to about 18.5 mpg, but that's to be expected. I also selected the remote start on the key fob but it's been pretty useless since it shuts off once you touch the door handle. However, I had the dealer program the key fob to roll down all the windows and sunroof when I press and hold unlock and it helps cool the interior quickly on those hot summer days. The 6.1 screen size is average to good and the Entune Infotainment system is also average to good. The sound system on the Limited is very good and plenty loud. The ride and handling are exceptional and there's no rattling sounds to be heard anywhere. The seats are comfortable on long drives except for the 3rd row seat which I would describe as cramped and more suitable for kids or shorter people. The engine acceleration especially when towing or going uphill is not as responsive as you might want but again that's not the 4Runner's main selling point. Overall, I really like that I can take my 4Runner to the boat ramp or out on the town and it performs well and looks really good at either place! This is a great all-around vehicle that has performed wonderfully well so far and I expect to own it for many years to come.**UPDATE** Hi there! After a few years, I wanted to share that my original review still stands. However, I did notice that infotainment screen sizes on other models have increased quite a bit since my original purchase, yet Toyota continues to offer standard smaller screen sizes even on their most expensive vehicles. I think it would be great if they could change that, as this is an important feature, especially when using Navigation. Additionally, I noticed that this version of their 6-cyl engine is a bit dated and gets poor fuel economy, with not as much horsepower compared to some of the other newer engines out there now. As a loyal 4-Runner owner for over 25 years, I was excited to upgrade to a newer version. However, my experience with the 2015 Trail Premium has been disappointing. Despite numerous trips to the dealership and Toyota Customer Care Center, the car's electronic issues persist. While some readers may find this review unhelpful, I encourage them to search other reviews and they will find similar issues, even in positive reviews. The 2015 Trail Premium is grossly underpowered and can be a safety hazard when acceleration is needed. However, manually shifting through the gears can improve gas mileage and partially compensate for the lack of power. Additionally, systems such as voice recognition, navigation, and radio have been known to freeze up and require the car to be pulled over and turned off in order to reset the system. Overall, while I am disappointed with my experience, I encourage Toyota to address these known technology issues with the 4-Runner. The navigation system and voice recognition system in my 4-Runner have been problematic, and despite multiple attempts to fix them, they still do not work properly. Consumer Reports has also criticized the Entune infotainment system, stating that Toyota needs to improve it. While I enjoy off-roading, I find that the stock version of the 4-Runner is not suitable for anything more than a dry level dirt road. The off-road features and traction systems on the Trail version are not effective for someone with off-road experience. To make the car more capable, one would need to spend an additional $3,000 to $10,000 to improve ground clearance and replace street tires and sheet metal skid plates. The car is not suitable for adverse winter driving conditions, even with winter-rated AT tires. I have disabled the traction systems in winter driving conditions as they increase the back end wanting to slide out. I recently read a review where the writer was doing the same thing for the same reasons.The car has several issues that need to be addressed. The ground clearance is marginal, which can lead to damage to the undercarriage. Additionally, the car has a problem of accelerating in reverse after a cold start if the brake is not forcefully applied. The transmission started to act up at 65,000 miles, and the interstate mpg dropped from 21 to 14 mpg. The 4-wheel drive doesn't always disengage without resorting to backing up and driving forward multiple times. Squeaks and noises are also an issue. The headlights project a perfectly straight horizontal line in front of the car, which can obscure obstacles in front of the car, especially animals. The paint is paper-thin, brittle, and easily scratched. If you buy the Trail Premium or similar version, be aware that the Although some may argue that the car meets the performance standards set by the factory, it falls short in comparison to its predecessors. It has been given unflattering nicknames such as 'Fragile Butterfly' and 'Captain Crap' by those who have experienced its lack of off-road capability, poor winter performance, and tendency to bottom out. However, it is important to consider all perspectives before making a decision. If you are considering purchasing a new 4-Runner, it may be beneficial to rent one and test it under various conditions to ensure it meets your needs. It is also important to note that some individuals who claim to be experts on the 4-Runner may not have extensive experience with it. Toyota has a history of producing excellent trucks, and we can hope that the 6th generation, if it is released, will be even better. Let's remain optimistic and look forward to what the future holds.
