2011 Toyota 4runner problems
The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

Another issue is the price Toyota is charging for the clock spring at $800 which may deter customers from fixing it. I am fixing mine and ask for nothing except consideration in forcing a recall. This is dangerous. I can send you the defective clock spring if you would like it. I bought the vehicle but live in Canada.

- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Scion xB and Lexus IS F, 2009-2011 Toyota Corolla and Corolla Matrix, 2006-2011 Toyota Yaris, Lexus IS250 and Lexus IS350, 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner, Lexus IS250C, Lexus IS350C and Lexus GX460, 2011 Sienna, 2007-2011 Lexus ES350, and 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe vehicles, originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A." Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" above, Toyota is recalling certain model year 2008 Scion xB and Lexus IS F, 2007-2008 Toyota Yaris, 2006-2008 Lexus IS250 and Lexus IS350 and 2007-2008 Lexus ES350 vehicles, originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Vehicles of these model years and models that were not originally sold or ever registered in either Zones A or B are not subject to this safety recall. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify the Toyota and Lexus owners. General Motors will contact the Pontiac owners. Depending on the model, dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator or the air bag assembly, free of charge. The recall began on December 6, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for interim notification for this campaign are G1P (Toyota Zone A), G1R (Toyota Zone B), G2G (Lexus Zone A), and G2H (Lexus Zone B). - Consequence: Contact with an exhaust tip may result in personal injury.
- Remedy: SET will notify owners, and dealers will install a re-designed exhaust tip that is smaller in diameter and is more recessed behind the bumper, free of charge. The affected vehicles may experience compression of the seat cushion which may damage the seat heater wiring.
- Consequence: Damage to the seat heater wiring could cause the wires to short, increasing the risk of the seat burning and causing personal injury to the occupant.
- Remedy: SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the heaters with copper strand heating elements and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory, free of charge. The recall is expected to began in January 2015. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226.

- Summary: Southeast Toyota is recalling certain model year 2008 and 2010-2013 Toyota Tundra, 2010-2012 Rav4, 2012 Toyota Sequoia, 2010-2011 Toyota Corolla, 2010-2011 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser, 2011 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2010-2013 Toyota Venza, 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner, 2010-2013 Toyota Tacoma, 2011-2012 Toyota Sienna, 2012 Toyota Prius, 2013 Scion FR-S, 2011 Scion XD, 2011 Scion XB, and 2012 Scion TC vehicles. These vehicles were sold with labels that were outside the allowable one percent of accuracy of actual weight added. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
- Consequence: An inaccurate label could lead to owners overloading their vehicles and tires. An overloaded vehicle can result in a tire failure which may result in a vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.

- Manufacturer: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
- Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
- Consequence: If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
- Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

I needed a tough SUV for daily use as I drive 10 miles each day off-road to get to work on a dirt/muddy road. My previous SUV, a Santa Fe, started falling apart after just 5 years on this road, so this time I decided to get a 4Runner. I am happy to report that this vehicle is built very well. During my visit to the dealer, the shop manager went over every part of the car with me, even pointing out many key points while we were under the car. I was thoroughly impressed with the service and the build quality. Now, with 12k miles on it, the SUV handles all I can throw at it with no problems, including mud trials, bumpy roads, and steep hills. The ride on the road is just fine, and I don't have any noise issues at any speed, even at over 100mph.

I didn't buy the previous generation 4Runner because it looked too small and wimpy. However, my 2011 trail edition has been great and has handled several rough jeep trails with ease. The size is perfect for me and my needs. The V6 engine has enough horsepower to handle long grades. I would definitely consider getting this again when my lease expires.

Toyota is reliable! I bought my Toyota at a car dealer because I heard Car Max is a rip off.

I'm so excited to share that I finally got my hands on a Toyota 4Runner last week and it has been amazing ever since! I've been wanting one since 2005 and it definitely lives up to my expectations. The MPG on my first tank was 20, but after the first fill up, it went up to 22 mpg which is fantastic for a vehicle of this size. Especially considering that I was only getting 24-26 mpg out of my Nissan Rogue that I traded in. Plus, there's plenty of room for all my friends!

This is my second 4Runner, my first being a 2006 SR5 4WD. I'm really impressed with the redesign of this vehicle by Toyota. It still has the classic 4Runner feel, but with better power, comfort and refinement all around. I'm surprised to see some negative reviews, as this SUV is as good as it gets. I'm averaging 19.5 mpg, the seats are very comfortable, the engine has plenty of power, the turning radius is small, the suspension soaks up everything, and the vehicle just has an overall feel of quality. The '10 4Runner has remained true to its roots, but is better than ever.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my '11 model that I purchased over a year ago. It's definitely a big car, but I find the controls to be easy and comfortable to use. Unfortunately, the heating and cooling controls don't seem to be working properly, as I'm unable to adjust the temperature to my liking. On the bright side, the gas mileage is pretty good for such a large vehicle, especially when ECO mode is turned on. While driving, I've noticed that it's very smooth and slow, which can be a bit annoying in city traffic. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and would recommend it to others. Let me know if you have any questions!

I love everything about the 2011 4Runner! However, I did notice that the driver and passenger seats are a bit narrow. I've been looking at the new Jeep Cherokee, Ford Explorer, and Dodge Durango, and they all seem to have more generous seat depths. For me, this is especially important since I tend to take long road trips for outdoor excursions like camping, fishing, and windsurfing.

Hello! I noticed that your vehicle is shuddering when driving. After doing some research, it seems that there may be a systemic problem with the transmission and Toyota is currently investigating. Before making a purchase, it may be helpful to review this forum post: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/89301-has-anyone-noticed-5.html. For those who have already purchased and are experiencing this issue, it can be frustrating, but let's hope that Toyota will support their customers. Unfortunately, the service departments do not currently have a fix for this, so we may have to live with it for now. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Hi there! I recently spoke with Danica Sorenson at Toyota Executive Offices regarding my issue. She mentioned that there might not be a fix for it, but I don't want to lose hope just yet. Do you have any advice for me? I was thinking of filing an arbitration request in my warranty booklet today since I still have 3 years or 36 thousand miles left. I'm also considering engaging attorneys for the presumed battle that may ensue. Thank you!

Regarding an earlier post, I would like to clarify that the comment made about the weakness of Toyota OEM shocks is inaccurate. The described condition is more likely a result of driving style rather than the performance of the 5,000lb truck. It is important to note that driving a truck the same way as a BMW can lead to dramatic and perhaps traumatic results. Changing to Bilstein shocks will not solve this issue as the shocks are already of good quality. It is important to understand that the problem is not with the car itself. For the record, I have no affiliation with Toyota, but I have been in the automotive industry my entire life and involved with motorsports for over 30 years.
