The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

I put something behind the tire THANK GOODNESS I noticed! Anyway, Toyota wants more than the vehicle is worth to fix it so my mechanic replaced the transfer case with a used one. I've heard of others having this problem and it seems like it could be a safety-related concern. And an expensive concern, as well.

- Summary: I'm experiencing major frame rust mainly at the crossbeams and all over the frame. Metal is literally crumbling away if I touch if. I don't even want to remove the rust to prepare for anti-rust coating since there may not be much metal left. Its only at 150k miles and shouldnt be crumbling away this fast. Just recently had to replace muffler and tailpipe since the muffle connection literally rusted away. Tacomas were able to have their frames replaces. The 4runner has a similar if not identical frame due to them sharing the same underlying platform. This should be pretty obvious that 4Runners need to be a part of that recall.

- Summary: I WAS WAITING FOR ANOTHER CAR TO PULL OUT OF A PARKING SPACE AT THE CARWASH. AS I INCHED FORWARD WITH MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR, THE CAR SUDDENLY STARTED ACCELERATING AND WHEN I BRAKED IT DIDN'T STOP. WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND THE CAR ACCELERATING, I WAS ABLE TO STEER AWAY FROM THE CAR PULLING OUT. MY CAR STOPPED WHEN I HIT A ROCK ABOUT 18" HIGH ALONG THE DRIVEWAY. THE DAMAGE TO MY CAR IS $3,200.00. I'LL HAVE THE INVOICE WHEN I PICK THE CAR UP FROM THE REPAIR SHOP IN A DAY OR TWO. THE MILEAGE I'M SUBMITTING ISN'T EXACT SINCE I DON'T HAVE MY CAR TO LOOK AT THE ODOMETER.

- Summary: MY FRAME BRACKETS THAT HOLD MY SUSPENSION AND OTHER PARTS LIKE MY FUEL TANK AND DRIVELINE ARE RUSTING OFF AND MY MECHANIC SAYS DON'T BOTHER BECAUSE IT'LL COST MORE THAN THE TRUCK IS WORTH. IT NEEDS A FULL FRAME CHANGE!! IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN DRIVING IT WHEN THE LAST PART BROKE AT HIGHWAY SPEED INSTEAD OF THE 20 MPH ON A REGULAR ROAD WE WOULDN'T BE CHATTING RIGHT NOW BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED ALONG WITH MY PASSENGER AND I HAD JUST GOT OUT OF A 3 DAY STAY AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL SO I WAS DEFINITELY GOING SLOWER THAN NORMAL. IT WAS MY COMPLETE DRIVERS REAR SPRING PERCH AND TRACK BAR OFF THE AXLE AND THE FRAME SIDE IS JUST AS BAD. I'M WORRIED ONE DAY SOMETHING IS GOING TO BREAK OFF AT HIGHWAY SPEED AND IF I DON'T GET HURT I'LL HIT SOMEONE ELSE OR WORSE. I'VE ENCLOSED 5 OUT OF 42 PHOTO'S OF THE RUST ITS SERIOUS AND I NEED HELP ALONG WITH LOTS OF OTHER 4TH GEN TOYOTA 4RUNNER OWNERS THAT WILL SOONER OR LATER GET INJURED OR KILL SOMEONE DUE TO THE SERIOUS FAILURES OF OUR VEHICLE FRAMES RUSTING. I WENT LOOKING TO REPLACE THE BRACKETS AND THEY DON'T SELL THEM SEPARATELY I WAS TOLD I NEED THE FRAME IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO GET WHAT I NEED. SO CAN YOU HELP ME AND ALL THE OTHER OWNERS GOING THROUGH THIS PLEASE! WE WERE LEFT OUT OF THE BIG FRAME RECALL TOYOTA DID BECAUSE THERE ARE MORE 4RUNNERS THAT ALL THE OTHER 3 COMBINED AND IT'S VERY SAD THIS HAPPENED!! 2008 Toyota 4runner recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2008 Toyota 4runner.
- Manufacturer: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC
- Components: SEATS:FRONT ASSEMBLY:SEAT HEATER/COOLER
- Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2005-2011 4Runner, Highlander, Sequoia, and Sienna, 2005-2010 Avalon and Tundra, 2006-2008 Camry Solara, 2006-2010 Highlander hybrid, 2006-2011 Rav4 and Tacoma, 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser, 2007-2011 Camry hybrid, 2009-2010 Venza, 2010-2012 Prius, 1988-1990 and 2005-2010 Camry, and 1989 and 2009-2010 Corolla vehicles equipped with aftermarket accessory seat heaters with a copper strand heating element. The electrical wiring in the seat heaters may be damaged when the seat cushion is compressed.
- Consequence: If damaged, the copper strand heating element may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the seat heaters, free of charge, and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory. The recall began on July 14, 2016. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET number for this recall is SET16B.

- Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Prius and Corolla, 2009-2011 Venza, 2006-2010 Avalon, 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser, 2005-2011 Sienna and Sequoia, 2006-2011 Tacoma 4x2 and 4x4, Camry, Highlander, Tundra 4x2 and 4x4, and 2007-2011 Rav4 and 4Runner. The affected vehicles may experience compression of the seat cushion which may damage the seat heater wiring.
- Consequence: Damage to the seat heater wiring could cause the wires to short, increasing the risk of the seat burning and causing personal injury to the occupant.
- Remedy: SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the heaters with copper strand heating elements and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory, free of charge. The recall is expected to began in January 2015. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226.

- Summary: TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008 THROUGH 2011 LEXUS LX570, 2003 THROUGH 2009 TOYOTA 4RUNNER, AND 2006 THROUGH 2010 RAV4 VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT.
- Consequence: A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the 4Runner. I completely agree with you on the build quality, it's really great! I also opted out of the sunroof option as I found it limited head room. In terms of fuel efficiency, I get around 14-15 mpg in the city, but on the highway, I average 21-22 mpg. I've found that I can get even better mileage on roads with a 55mph limit, where I can get around 24mpg. The 4Runner is such a versatile vehicle, we even used it as a pick-up during a recent move! It's definitely a great family vehicle too. Thanks again for sharing your experience!

I recently bought my 3rd 4Runner. I absolutely love this vehicle. It handles nicely and has plenty of room inside. I have never had mechanical issues with any of my 4Runners. The reliability is unbeatable. If taken care of properly, this vehicle could last for an easy 10 years or more. I can't imagine driving anything else!

I purchased this car brand new and it will soon be 4 years old with 57K miles on it. I am pleased to say that I have never experienced any mechanical issues with it. Although I have added a front end leveling kit, larger tires with aftermarket rims, the engine remains stock. The only downside is the gas mileage, which is not great even when driving conservatively. Despite this, I am still happy with my purchase and appreciate the great resale value. The dealer offered me 22,500 for a trade-in, but I have decided to keep it. Overall, I am very satisfied with my car!

I recently went to a Chevy dealer to look for an SUV, but ended up buying a Toyota 4Runner. I am absolutely impressed with this vehicle and love looking at it in my driveway as well as driving it. After reading the reviews, I can confidently say that they are spot on! Although the paint chips easily and the front end/hood could be more aggressive, I have the hood scoop with a V8 and Magnaflow exhaust which sounds great and drives great. This vehicle is not only fun to drive, but also handles great and is solid! I had also considered the Hummer H3, Jeep Laredo, and Pathfinder, but ultimately chose the 4Runner on the spot! This is my first Toyota and I am extremely glad I made the purchase. I don't think I'll be buying an American model again, as I feel they are overpriced.

Wow, it's great to hear that you're still impressed with your 4Runner after almost 6,000 miles! You recently towed your Lund 1750 Fisherman (2500 lbs with motor and trailer) 525 miles and averaged 17.5 mpg, which is really impressive. It's amazing how stable the truck and trailer rig was, even when passing semi-trucks on 2-lane roads. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I'm glad with most aspects of the car, but I have some concerns about the ergonomics. Despite being 5'9'', I only have a couple of inches of headroom even with the seat bottomed out, unless I recline the seat like I'm in a sports car. This worries me in case of an accident, as I might end up wearing the sun visor as a hat. Additionally, I think the steering wheel tilt needs an extra stop point between the lowest and first up position. I'm not sure who Toyota engineers had in mind when designing this, as I consider myself to have an average build.

I have taken my '08 Toyota 4Runner to three different Toyota dealerships for service five times now. Despite having my catalytic converter changed, I am still experiencing issues with the exhaust and emission system of my car. Whenever I drive at speeds of 60 MPH or faster on the highway, I notice a strong and heavy sulfuric and ammonia scent entering the vehicle, which gives me a headache and bothers my newborn baby. Unfortunately, I cannot drive with my windows down. I would appreciate it if Toyota could help me resolve this issue. Thank you for your understanding.

Very reliable! It has 55k miles and has had no problems. The mileage isn't too good, about 16 in town (driving like a little old lady) and 20 on the highway sometimes. However, this is what it is supposed to get. It may not be very comfortable for me at 6'2
