The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.

The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.

For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.

As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.

The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

Vehicle is available for inspection by NHTSA. As a retired Police officer and former FAA certified Airframe & Powerplant mechanic I am familiar with hydraulic systems. I believe that this issue if not identified and addressed by the manufacture will cause bodily harm to the operator and possibly other vehicles or pedestrians. There has also been a lot of chatter on Toyota forums about the same problem.

The manufacturer knows about this problem because there is a NHTSA Campaign Number 19V67000 that states the suspension and steering fasteners were improperly tightened. This should be a recall and I should not have to pay for their mistakes! If it had come loose, there would be a loss of control leading to an accident! SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-05
  • VIN: JTEBU5JR3J5
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Recently I have had issues with the brake pressure. The brakes have been bled multiple times assuring there is not air in the lines. My mechanic could not find an issue with the brakes at all, yet when I come to a complete stop, the car starts to creep forward sometimes unnoticeable and the brake pedal slowly sinks. I have to put my car in park to keep from rolling into vehicles at stop lights and hope and pray that they hold/ work when I am in traffic. I’ve read many many forums with people with the same issues and Toyota cannot find the problem yet these people are being told that it’s “normal”. This is a major safety concern and could cause someone to wreck. I’m shocked that Toyota has not done a recall on this braking system, but something needs to be done about it.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-03
  • VIN: JTEBU5JR7J5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I noticed a crack forming in the windshield without seeing any signs of an impact. I took it in and Toyota had found a small indentation along the crack line that they claimed to be what caused the crack. This indentation along the crack line was superficial and did not have any of the "spider legs" type crack lines out of it. I have had older vehicles in the Pacific Northwest without this issue, and I thought this was odd so I took it to a 3rd party Master Window repair technician not associated with Toyota and they diagnosed it as a stress crack related to the heating element.

Negative 2018 Toyota 4runner car reviews

I have been a loyal 4Runner owner since 1987 and have always been satisfied with my purchases. However, my experience with the 2018 SR5 4WD has been disappointing due to the transmission 'shuddering' between 35 mph and 54 mph. Despite the dealer attributing this to the torque converter going in and out of lock to optimize fuel economy, I find it to be a nuisance that affects my driving experience. While the ride can be harsh on rough roads, the ground clearance and 4WD capabilities are still impressive. Nonetheless, I am considering exploring other options if the transmission issue persists.

I have been a loyal Toyota customer for the past 25 years, and my first 2006 SR5 was a vehicle that I truly loved. It provided me with over 250,000 miles of excellent service and was perfect for long trips. Recently, I decided to purchase the 2018 Limited model, but unfortunately, I have been disappointed with its sluggish handling, poor power response, and subpar info/GPS system. As a customer who paid upwards of $50,000 for a vehicle, I expected a higher level of driving satisfaction. Additionally, the Yokohama tires that came with the car were problematic, with two blowouts in the first 6,000 miles. After researching, I found that this particular tire is the subject of a class-action lawsuit. I had to spend $1200 on a new set of Michelins and now have two of the original tires sitting in my garage. Ultimately, I have decided to switch back to driving a Lexus, which I believe is the best car on the road today.

It's disappointing to experience overheating issues with my brand new Toyota 4Runner while crossing the border from Mexico to the United States in high temperatures. Despite showing a video of the temperature gauge in the red zone, Toyota Imperial claims that their computer shows no issues and cannot offer a solution. On my third visit to Toyota of Imperial CA, I was advised to try crossing at night when it's cooler and to maintain distance from other cars to allow my 2018 4Runner to cool down. As a paying customer, I expect my new car to be free of mechanical problems and this experience has been frustrating. I plan to take action and share my experience to ensure others are aware of the issues I faced with Toyota.

Your 4 runner is the TRD off road 4x4 edition. It responds well when steering, but may not perform as well around sharp curves in the mountains due to its top-heavy feel. The horsepower is fair, but you added a TRD cold air intake to give it a bit more power and a throaty sound from the engine. The interior is nice and easy to navigate, with a rating of 8.5 out of 10. Realistically, the gas mileage is around 18-22, but this may vary depending on your driving habits. Overall, your 2018 4x4 TRD off road is a great vehicle and I would rate it a 9.5.

I've only owned my Toyota for 3 months and I'm disappointed with the quality of plastic used throughout. Although I had a Lexus prior, I expected better quality for the price. It's frustrating that even putting grocery bags in the back can cause scratches and ruin the interior. Additionally, I experienced a cracked windshield after just one rock hit it on the highway. I also had a defective tire with a bulge before reaching 6,000 miles. Despite these issues, I still love my Toyota and hope that the quality will improve in the future. It's important to be aware of these potential issues before purchasing.

Positive 2018 Toyota 4runner car reviews

I've been a fan of the 4Runner for a few years now, and I even convinced my brother to buy a used '10 SR5 Premium. After seeing him put 140k miles on it and it still feeling like a new car, I fell in love with this model. With my first child on the way, I wanted something bigger than a sedan and better in Cleveland winters. I was tired of all the crossovers that are just minivan substitutes with 4 doors, so I wanted something masculine and capable. After making a few calls, I was able to get a good deal on a Magnetic Gray Metallic SR5 Premium. I love how it has just what I want and nothing more -

You should definitely get one, you won't regret it! My wife loves it and it's the only car she'll drive.

  3. Dewayne Powlowski 2024-09-29

I read in other articles that the platform is old but I must say that this is a nice SUV that handles well, is quiet and is very reliable. The fuel economy is very good; I get around 18 or better around town and 25 on the highway, of course, this is a 2wd model. I am very pleased with my 4Runner and absolutely love the body on frame as opposed to a unibody style. My wife drives a unibody SUV and I prefer the 4Runner without a doubt.

  4. Will Lebsack 2024-09-18

Not all SUVs are created equal. While modern SUVs may lack off-road and ice/snow driving capabilities, this SUV is different. With actual locking differentials, it can power through blizzards and icy roads with ease, even with all-season tires. Plus, its reliable powertrain is built to last, unlike newer vehicles that are designed for planned obsolescence. And with its extra weight, it provides better protection in case of accidents. While it may not be the best fit for those seeking the latest technology, if you're tired of constant repairs and software updates, this SUV is the perfect choice. It will still be running long after your kids have grown up.

  5. Eldon O'Reilly 2024-07-23

If you're looking for an SUV with power both on and off the road, this might not be the best option for you. The acceleration is lacking and the gas mileage is a bit skimpy for a six-cylinder engine. However, if those things don't matter to you, it's still a great vehicle! I personally wish they would bring back the 4.7 V-8 as an option. Thank you for considering this vehicle!
