2021 Toyota 4runner problems

The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.

The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.

For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.

As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.

The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

Common 2021 Toyota 4runner problems

The Toyota 4Runner is a popular SUV known for its reliability, but like any vehicle, it can have issues. Here are some common problems with the 2021 Toyota 4Runner based on complaints from owners:

  • Check Engine Light: Owners claim that when the charcoal canister fails, it causes a Check Engine Light (CEL). The 4Runner’s evaporative emission (EVAP) system might turn on the CEL if it notices a problem with the “charcoal canister purge control solenoid valve or canister failure,” RepairPal says. Failure of the charcoal canister could cause debris to circulate, which could cause further problems.
  • Starter Issues: A worn or corroded solenoid contact on the starter can cause the 4Runner to not start. The average mileage where this issue pops up is between 47,000 and 350,000.
  • Stereo Issues: Some 2021 4Runner owners have reported losing all audio sound from their stereo. The issue seems to be related to the radio and not the speakers, as selecting a local FM radio station, no audio is heard. Going to AM results in the same issue, and adjusting the volume up or down does not help.

It is important to note that while these issues have been reported by some 4Runner owners, they may not be representative of all 4Runner owners' experiences. Toyota has a reputation for reliability, and many 4Runner owners report few or no major issues with their vehicles.

POWER TRAIN,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-28
  • VIN: JTEHU5JR2M5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: As the vehicle was traveling on a highway at 35 mph the vehicle shut off electronically three times and powered itself back on after 15 seconds or so of continuous cruising on the highway. Unable to accelerate or control the vehicle while the electronic component shut off in the vehicle. Three days later, a series of warning lights and check engine lights turned on, which has occurred 6 other times, and has been brought to local Toyota dealer multiple times (over six times) and no fix has been conducted to repair the vehicle other than resetting the vehicles ECU. When all of the warning lights turn on, the vehicle loses 2nd gear and juts itself forward and becomes extremely difficult to control to the point where I have almost gotten into life threatening accidents over 4 times. Toyota has acknowledged that they do not know what is wrong with the vehicle and is unsure how to fix it. This is a safety concern that is not getting enough attention and needs to be rectified before someone or myself ends up killing ourselves

The next morning the vehicle was towed the the dealer collision shop and then taken to the service department at the dealer. This problem; ,after almost 2 months was never solved....corporate offices checked the data recorder...no conclusions.....and implied this problem did not occur. The body is now being repaired yet no brake problem has been ever repaired. ( under warranty....31,967 miles ). I understand a similar problem occured in New Jersey although on the road and the driver had to be removed through the sunroof and the vehicle was totaled.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-18
  • VIN: JTEKU5JR0M5
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: Yokohama 245/60r20 Geolander G96 that came with my brand new 2021 Toyota 4Runner Limited I purchased in December 2020. Over the last several weeks every 7 to 10 days I have needed to put air in all 4 tires. Then I was driving on a smooth paved street arriving at work my low pressure warning light came on. I got out and had a flat tire. I found the inner sidewall failed at only 28,000 miles. I didn’t hit anything on the road, or hit a curb etc. just normal driving on paved roads. Putting on the spare I took my 4Runner to the Toyota dealership a few miles away. The service technician at our local Toyota dealer today stated they, “are seeing this issue as a common problem with this particular tire on Toyota 4Runners in our Colorado Cold climate, is causing the rubber to become excessively brittle. Even with normal use, the smallest stones/sand used in our highway plows/sanding trucks cause catastrophic premature tire failure. They may be fine for use in California warm clients but not here in Colorado.” This explains why recently every 7 to 10 days I have needed to put additional air in all 4 tires. The rubber is prematurely becoming brittle/rot in cold weather thus not properly sealing the air. The technician recommended going with 4 new tires from a different manufacturer, stating the problem will continue with the other 3 Yokohama tires and likely a new Yokohama tire as well. He agreed the tire should be recalled as this is unacceptable especially for a tire with a M+S (mud and snow rating), only 28,000 miles on and properly taken care of. At $400+ per tire this is a huge expense and clearly a HUGE safety issue in cold climates. In cold weather having to refill tires with air every 7 to 10 days is a real hassle as well. Good thing I have my own air compressor at home. I only drive with the correct air pressure per my owners manual as stated on my drivers door. The Toyota dealer drew a white chalk square around the tire failure area.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-28
  • VIN: JTERU5JR3M5
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS
  • Summary: Bought the vehicle brand new and have been dealing with a steering wheel/vehicle shake ever since. The vehicle feels out of control around 55-65mph(like death wobble) and the ride is rough at any speed over 50mph. This has been a serious issue on the highway with instances of crossing lanes because of lack of control over steering. No warning lights have ever come on. Been to the dealership many times complaining about the issue just to be told that the "problem can't be replicated". I have taken it to several tire shops as well to have the wheels/tires balanced but nothing seems to help. I even bought new wheels and tires just to see if this was the cause and still no solution. This is a serious problem that thousands of 4Runner owners are experiencing and Toyota needs to get to the bottom of this. This absolutely should not be happening on brand new/modern day vehicles. I believe this is a multivariate issue causing the shake - a mix between wheel/tire balance, steering column, and possibly the drive shaft/differential/CV components. The problem must be big if Toyota continues to deny the problem year after year after year.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-01
  • VIN: JTELU5JR2M5
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: When carrying cargo, the cutoff of the LED low beam headlamps is shifted upward blinding on coming traffic and dazzling other drivers. This requires the driver to manually adjust the angle of headlight projection under the hood of the vehicle, as there is not automatic system to do so, or even a manual system inside the vehicle. As a result, it’s likely few drivers will do this. Also, it is not possible to manually adjust the headlamps every time the weight in the vehicle shifts. LEDs are particularly bright and affect oncoming traffic. If they are not perfectly aligned at least 50% of the oncoming cars flash their lights at me, many leaving their brights on, probably assuming I am doing the same. Therefore, it’s not just that my vehicle is blinding them, but there is also an element of road rage that comes into play with both drivers becoming dazzled. As such, basic visibility safety at night, should require LED headlamps to all have a self-leveling feature to account for the headlight cutoff angle changing when carrying cargo.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-05
  • VIN: Jteku5jr6m5
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: I was driving my new car with less than 500 miles on a highway with no other cars around and nothing overhead. It sounded like a gun went off then I could hear the glass falling sliding around on the sunroof shade. The glass was blown outward proving nothing fell and broke it. A Toyota dealers is replacing the sunroof but refuse to accept responsibility and let warranty pay. My 2 year old daughter was in the cover and I’m so thankful I had the sun roof shade closed because glass would have been sprayed over all of us.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-03-30
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: JTENU5JRXM5
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: On 3/30/21 it was discovered that my 2021 4runner with 5500 miles caught fire while parked in my enclosed garage. This event happened while my family and I were sleeping. The fire was discovered @5am at which time the fire department was contacted. The fire was contained to the garage. The vehicle was a total loss and was determined to be the source of the fire that destroyed all of the contents in my garage and significantly damaged the garage structure resulting in a rebuild. The fire department performed an initial investigation, a 3rd party fire investigator performed an investigation, and State Farm along with a representative from Toyota conducted an investigation. Per my claims adjuster, the investigation determined that the fire originated in the vehicle but the exact cause could not be determined due to the damage to the wiring harness and the proximity to the condenser. This incident could have easily lead to significant injury or death to my family. The vehicle had not experienced any issues, no warning lights had indicated an issue, and the only maintenance that had been performed to the vehicle was a tire rotation at 5000 miles at the Toyota dealership.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-27
  • VIN: JTERU5JR0M5
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: On May 27, 2021 The brakes failed on my brand new 2021 Toyota TRD Off-Road Premium 4Runner. I attempted to brake at a stop light, the brake pedal went to the floor and the car did not stop. Luckily no accident occurred and I was able to drive it home (4 miles). No warning lights or messages appeared at all before, during or after the incident. This occurred between 3-4 pm in Custer, SD on Main Street during clear weather. The vehicle was hauled to Toyota dealer in Rapid City, SD the next morning, May 28th. They could not duplicate the issue, brakes appeared to work fine. They found no fluid leaks and no computer trouble codes. Dealer says they can't diagnose and fix it unless they can replicate the issue. I asked how brakes can completely fail and then work fine again - they don't know. After this brake failure I have found several other 4Runner owners who have experienced this same failure, under similar conditions and speeds. Other owners have also submitted incident reports to NHTSA.

VISIBILITY/WIPER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-25
  • VIN: JTEHU5JR9M5
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING IN A SNOWSTORM ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AT NIGHT ON 1/25/2021, TWO IMPORTANT SAFETY SYSTEMS FAILED DUE TO ICE AND SNOW BUILDUP ON THE VEHICLE. FAILURE 1: THE PRE COLLISION SYSTEM (PCS) WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED INDICATING TEMPORARY FAILURE OF THE PCS SYSTEM (SEE PHOTO 1). THIS WAS DUE TO ICE AND SNOW BUILDUP ON THE FORWARD SENSOR, LOCATED ON THE FRONT GRILLE (SEE PHOTO 2). PROBLEM COULD ONLY BE RECTIFIED BY STOPPING AND PHYSICALLY REMOVING THE ICE BUILDUP, AS REFERENCED IN THE TOYOTA OWNER'S MANUAL, PAGE 252. I RECOMMEND THE SENSOR BE RELOCATED IN FRONT OF THE REAR VIEW MIRROR HIGH ON THE WINDSHIELD, WHERE WINDSHIELD DEFROST AND THE ANGLE OF THE GLASS WILL REDUCE OR ELIMINATE THE BUILDUP. IN THE SHORT TERM, PERHAPS A PLASTIC AIR DEFLECTOR OR SHIELD CAN BE FABRICATED WHICH WILL KEEP ICE FROM INTERFERING WITH THE SENSOR. FAILURE 2: HEADLIGHT HIGH BEAM FAILURE. THE DESIGN OF THE HEADLIGHT COVER FACILITATES ICE BUILDUP OVER THE ENTIRE STRUCTURE (SEE PHOTO 3). SINCE THE HIGH BEAM BULB IS INBOARD AND AFT OF THE LOW BEAM BULB, IT CANNOT PENETRATE THE ICE BUILDUP AT ALL, AND MAKES THE HIGH BEAMS COMPLETELY INEFFECTIVE. WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE: OUTSIDE AIR TEMP: 30 TO 32 DEGREES; NIGHT; HEAVY SNOW; ALTITUDE: 3,000 TO 6,563 FEET.

Negative 2021 Toyota 4runner car reviews

  1. Armando Borer 2025-01-07

The 4runner has some great features such as a tank-like feel, superb build quality, a tall seating position, and lots of interior room. Apple CarPlay also makes the otherwise dated tech more livable day-to-day. However, there are some downsides to consider. Above 70mph, there is a lot of wind and engine noise, and the engine seems to work extra hard above 70mph and with any sort of grade. Additionally, the fuel economy is pretty embarrassing at only 15mpg around town. If you plan to spend a meaningful amount of time off-road, I would definitely recommend the 4runner. However, if not, the areas where it underperforms, such as old tech, not enough power for highway speeds up any sort of hill, and poor fuel economy, may outweigh its benefits. I personally sold mine after only 5 months due to the wind and engine noise during a conference call on a road trip.

  2. Nickolas Waelchi 2024-11-18

We purchased this vehicle because my wife was drawn to the nightshade edition. While it certainly looked fantastic, I found it to be quite uncomfortable on road trips. This was surprising, as one would expect the limited nightshade edition to be ideal for long drives. Unfortunately, the suspension was too stiff, and after just half an hour of driving, I would find my butt falling asleep due to the uncomfortable seats and ride. The off-road capabilities were adequate, as was the 4-wheel drive. However, overall, I did not enjoy driving this vehicle. It was produced during the Covid pandemic and due to chip shortages, it lacked many features that are typically included (such as blind spot monitors). We have since upgraded to a 4x4 TRD Off-Road and absolutely love it. While some people may enjoy the nightshade edition, it simply wasn't the right fit for us.

  3. Cale Maggio 2024-10-19

This truck seems to have a few issues with its suspension and interior, which can be quite bothersome. Unfortunately, the sunroof also seems to have some rattling issues. It's not the best car if you're used to high-quality interiors. I wish I could have sold it earlier, but due to the current chip shortage, I'm stuck with it for the time being. It can be frustrating when passengers ask me to turn down the radio, only to hear all the interior noises. This is my first Toyota, and it might be my last.

I leased this vehicle without ever test driving it. I would recommend going through a broker to avoid any issues. Unfortunately, the ride home was horrible due to the tires being left at 60psi and the vehicle not being prepped properly. However, after the tires were set and all the electronics were programmed to the right country and time zone, it was okay. The vehicle has a nice layout and is quiet, but there are some flaws. It has an old chassis with modern updates, which may not be to everyone's liking. The Off Road suspension is quite stiff, which may not be ideal for some drivers. However, I am sure it will be great off-road. The running boards on the 21, like the 08, are pointless and need to be removed. The ride is quieter than my 08 at speed, but the 08 still feels more solid. The power with the V8 is immediate compared to waiting until the upper RPM for some power with the V6. The 21's suspension is hard to explain, but it almost makes the car feel very light due to its stiffness. It does not handle crosswinds well, and you may need to steer into it to stay in your lane. The new dash and infotainment are pretty decent, and the JBL Nav in the 08 is pointless. If I had a choice, I would pick the V8. The only reason why I got the 21 is that it has a warranty, the next gen looks like a 4cyl hybrid, the chassis is proven, and the residual is the best. I would recommend test driving one before making a purchase.I understand that the previous comments may have caused some confusion. It's important to note that while both vehicles have bubbles on the back and independent suspensions, they serve different purposes. The first vehicle is designed for driving around town, while the second is built on a land cruiser frame, has a solid rear axle, and is meant for towing and camping. It's important not to mistake the two as they have distinct differences.

We recently traded our Highlander for a 4Runner. During the test drive, we didn't get a chance to take it out of town, so we didn't realize it was underpowered. Additionally, we didn't notice that the 4Runner had less legroom for rear passengers than the Highlander. Although the 4Runner is bigger on the outside, the interior volume seems smaller and the seating feels low to the ground. It can struggle when climbing hills at 60-70 mph and towing a small trailer. However, we have had it for less than a year and it has been reliable so far.

I've owned Jeep products for the past 9 years and wasn't really considering switching to a Toyota. However, as soon as I sat in the 4Runner Off Road, I was completely sold! I love the height, clean lines, aggressive look, and ruggedness. Although there are some complaints about the interior, I personally like the fit and finish of the dash. It's simple, clean, and understated, with a variety of surfaces that include dimpling on the dash and carbon fiber on the console. The control center is fabulous and looks great, with easy-to-access controls. My 2021 4Runner has everything I need, and the ride is comfortable without being abusive. I have no complaints, and it's even better than my previous two Jeeps! I'm really enjoying this new ride and looking forward to new adventures in my 4Runner!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I absolutely love my 4Runner!

I love the idea of this vehicle! It's perfect for off-roading, going up mountains, and even down steep rocky hills with ease. Although I haven't had the chance to use my 4Runner for its intended purpose yet, I'm excited to do so soon. This is actually my third Toyota - I've previously owned a Sequoia and a 4Runner Limited, both of which were amazing SUVs with unique features. I feel like I owe it to my TRD Off-Road to give it a chance to show off its capabilities, and I'm actively looking for opportunities to do so. #driveanywhere

We've been considering a 4Runner for about a month now. We were also looking at the new Honda Pilot, but my wife has always had a soft spot for the 4Runner. We decided against the Limited mainly because of its design, specifically the front end. It's a shame because there were features in it that I would have really liked, such as memory seats and auto start. However, we're thrilled with our choice of the SR5 Premium. The car handles well and, despite the engine being loud, it's incredibly quiet in the cabin - like super quiet! Our car has BFG All Terrain tires, which are great in the snow, and road noise is surprisingly low. The ride is incredibly smooth. The previous owners also got the black out treatment on it, and since the car is black as well, it looks just badass!

Hi! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the 4 Runner SR5 2021. I've owned it for a year now and I'm extremely happy with it. It's a very safe vehicle, especially in the winter. I think it's an amazing car! I noticed that your review was a bit low, but I respectfully disagree. I think you might want to take another look at the 4 Runner SR5 2021. Thank you for your time and have a great day!
