The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

- Summary: My gear shift became difficult to shift. As I was driving it, when I physically shifted to the Drive position, the display didn't confirm "D", but I could drive. As I was driving, the car shifted to Neutral without me shifting, but did not show "N" on the display. My car stopped accelerating and revved higher. This occurred as I was driving on the road around 45 mph. I could not tell on the display that I was not in Drive. I pulled over safely luckily. I Continued to try to get it to drive to get it to a dealership to look at. They reported it was PRNDL switch issue. TECH FOUND INTERNAL CORROSION IN TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR CREATING A PHYSICAL RESISTANCE IN SENSOR WHICH PREVENTED VEHICLE FROM PROPERLY INDICATING GEAR. TECH REPLACED TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR, ADJUSTED SENSORWITH TECHSTREAM DATA LIST, AND PERFORMED HEALTH CHECK This is not the first they have seen either. This would appear to be a common safety issue to drivers. I also had a difficult time confirming the car was in the Park "P" position. I believe this issue could have potentially affected the vehicle's ability to engage in park and stay in park, much like the issue with getting into Drive and staying in Drive.

On March 4, 2020, Toyota expanded the recall to include certain 2014-2015 Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser, 2018 Avalon, Corolla, 2014 FJ Cruiser, 2017 Sienna and Lexus 2018 ES 350, 2018-2019 GS 300, 2013-2014 GS350, 2014-2015 GX 460, IS 350 and LX 570, 2014 IS F, 2018-2019 IS 350, LC 500H and LS 500H, 2013-2015 LS 460, 2015 NX 200T and RC350, 2017 RC 200T and RX 350. Toyota also removed the 2018-2019 Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser and 2018-2019 Lexus GX 460 and LX 570 and 2019 NX300 from inclusion in this recall. On March 19, 2020, Toyota expanded the recall to include 2015 Lexus GS350 vehicles. The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.
- Consequence: If the fuel pump fails, the engine can stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. The recall began May 4, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 20TB02 and 20TA02 for Toyota vehicles and 20LB01 and 20LA01 for Lexus vehicles.

Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front driver inflator, front passenger airbag inflator, the airbag assembly, or the front passenger airbag sub-assembly and inflator. I love my new Limited 4-runner. It drives awesome. I'm so glad we decided to go with this vehicle. Everything about the SUV is amazing - the comfort, the room, the leather, and the sound system! I can't say enough good things about it!

I have used this vehicle in very high snow, mud, and woods, and it never stops or hesitates. I have owned several 4X4 systems, but this one beats them all. I have the 100,000 warranty, but I have never had to use it. This is a very rugged vehicle. Thank you, Toyota. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs an extreme weather and terrain vehicle. This vehicle can never leave you stranded.

In cold climates, it may take a while for the engine to reach its normal operating range, usually after about 8 miles of driving. The interior heater may also take some time to warm up the interior, even at maximum settings. The suspension can be a bit hard when driving over bumps and potholes, which may not be ideal for some drivers. Additionally, the running boards may not be very useful for taller individuals as they can get in the way. During hard braking, the front of the car may dive and the rear may move up, which can be a bit unsettling. The engine can also be quite loud and rough-sounding around 2500rpm. Finally, the sheet metal used in the car is quite thin, which can cause waves to appear on the hood when going through a car wash dryer.

The windshield tint or glass causes eye strain, dizziness & headaches on long trips or when commuting daily. However, this issue does not detract from the fact that this is an amazing SUV that I really love driving! It is much roomier than the older 4runners inside. I am confident that Toyota will address this issue and provide a solution soon. I appreciate the efforts of my local dealership in trying to resolve the issue, but unfortunately, the replacement factory glass windshield did not solve the problem. Despite this setback, I remain optimistic that a solution will be found. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi there! This is actually my second 4Runner. I decided to upgrade to a newer, more reliable vehicle for my daughter and myself. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues with my new 4Runner. Every time something hits the windshield, it seems to crack, which has been a bit of a hassle to get fixed. I've also had a major electrical failure that put it in the shop for 5 days. Despite these issues, I'm hopeful that things will improve and I'm still enjoying the vehicle overall. Thanks for listening!

I owned a 1997 4Runner that I bought with over 200 miles on it and it was the best car I ever had. However, my experience with my 2013 4Runner has been quite the opposite. The Staten Island dealer insisted that it was 'Certified Pre-owned', but unfortunately, the truck has not lived up to my expectations. The dealer experience was a disappointment, and the truck has been a nightmare. The fake four-wheel drive dial instead of the small stick has been a major issue, and the transmission has been problematic since I got the truck. While in four-wheel drive, I slid and nearly crashed because I ran over a smashed pumpkin in the street. In a little over an inch of snow, I slid sideways and just missed a bus. I took it back because the brakes were questionable, and the idiot in Manhattan Toyota insisted that all of the Toyota brakes slip when they get hot. Recently, I nearly crashed again because the rear, right brake cylinder exploded. It was a scary experience, and I had to maneuver into oncoming traffic and then onto a sidewalk to let it coast to a stop. My wife was screaming through the whole unpleasant event. I was contemplating hitting a lamp post, but I wasn't going very fast, so I was okay as long as everyone kept moving out of my way. I specifically mentioned the brakes to Toyota when I went for the oil change and inspections, but they did not take it seriously. Overall, my experience with Toyota has been disappointing, and I will not be buying another Toyota or Lexus again.
