2006 Toyota 4runner problems
The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

Common 2006 Toyota 4runner problems
The Toyota 4Runner from the 2006 model year is known for its excellent predicted reliability ratings, but like any vehicle, it has a few problems that are worth considering. One of the most common issues is extensive rust in the frame, which is more prevalent in states with harsh weather conditions.
Another problem that affects the 2006 Toyota 4Runner is the braking system. From 2014 to 2017 models, the 4Runner struggled with brake system problems, with many owners reporting that their brakes would fail or lock up temporarily. Other issues include warping issues and premature wear on the front brake rotor and brake master cylinder.
The 4th-generation 4Runners, including the 2006 model, were also particularly susceptible to rust and corrosion damage, which can appear at around 150k miles. Owners reported that their 4Runners ran fine until a shop visit revealed that the frame and suspension were badly rusted/corroded.
The 2006 Toyota 4Runner also has a problem with damaged or cracked dashboards, particularly in the 2004 models. Dashboards exposed under direct sunlight have melted or been damaged somehow, which not only looks unsightly but may also prevent airbag deployment.
Finally, transmission issues have affected 4Runner model years from 1990 to 2016, including the 2006 model. Rough shifting and loss of power are common symptoms of these problems, which are often caused by a faulty shift solenoid or throttle position sensor, both of which require replacement to fix.
In summary, while the 2006 Toyota 4Runner has excellent predicted reliability ratings, it is not without its problems. Rust in the frame, braking system issues, damaged dashboards, and transmission problems are some of the most common issues reported by owners. However, with proper maintenance and care, these issues can be minimized or avoided altogether.
How many miles can a 2006 Toyota 4Runner last?
In a used model, with proper maintenance, you should expect to reach somewhere in the area of 250,000 miles before the engine and transmission start to give out. Even poorly maintained 4Runners have a good chance of crossing 200,000.

Is Toyota 4Runner high maintenance?
So, is a Toyota 4Runner expensive to maintain? According to CarEdge, a Toyota 4Runner will cost about $5,825 for maintenance and repairs during its first ten years of service, beating the industry average for popular SUVs by a whopping $3,308.
Is the 4Runner engine good?
The Toyota's 4.0-liter engine might be reliable, but it also reliably consumes fuel at an alarming rate. The truck's interior has plenty of passenger and cargo space, but its cabin materials are drab. On regular roads, this truck-based SUV drives like, well, a truck: its handling feels loose, and its ride is uncouth.

- VIN: JTEBU14R360
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The rear window on my 2006 4Runner suddenly shattered. I had just cleared the car of snow, put my son in the car and left the house. Less than 1/10th of a mile down the road it exploded. Glass could have gone all over the child in the backseat. There have been past issues. Toyota offered an extended warranty on the part until 2018, so they are aware of the problem. Not yet. No warnings.

TRAILER HITCHES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-19
- VIN: JTEBU14R260
- Components: TRAILER HITCHES
- Summary: While towing a 16' utility trailer using the 2" ball on a Switch Ball #42178, the ball separated from the shank. I was driving my 2007 Toyota 4Runner traveling on the highway at about 60mph at the time. Fortunately the safety chains did their job and prevented the trailer from completely disconnecting from the vehicle. Upon stopping my vehicle several hundred feet after separation, I found the 2" ball still locked and secured inside of the trailer's coupler, and the shank still securely attached to my vehicle. As a result my rear bumper is now heavily damaged from the trailer contacting it after uncoupling from the vehicle. I'm glad nobody was hurt or killed as a result of this incident. If the safety chains had not done their job, the unattached trailer could have caused serious damage, injury, and/or death. This incident could have also resulted in losing control of my vehicle, which thankfully I did not. This Switch Ball #42178 was purchased in September of 2022 and this was the first time I've used it. At the time of the incident I had towed the trailer approximately 75 miles. I have a background in selling and installing utility trailers and towing accessories. I'm confident the product was installed and used as directed. I contacted Curt Manufacturing with the above concerns. At their request I shipped the trailer ball to them for inspection. They have denied any responsibility stating their product did not fail. They have blamed the incident on "user error". I'm happy to share all communication with the NHTSA. I am including pictures of the damage to my bumper which was caused by the trailer after the Curt ball became disconnected from it's mating shank. I can share more about my assessment of why this failure occurred upon request.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-24

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-12
- VIN: JTEBT14R860
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Corrosion of pistons in front brake calipers results in an increase in braking stopping distance. Everytime the front brake pads are replaced the same issue is encountered, defect has taken place three times. In the four piston brake caliper the inside pistons on both the left and right caliper are frozen in place . The brake pads on the outside position have twice as much wear as the inside pads. This is an indication of uneven braking leading to increased stopping distance . Toyota maintains , there is not a problem, yet in forums on the web there are many experiences with owners having the same problem , resulting in costly repair bills. There is no warning of reduced braking efficiency .
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-06
- VIN: JTEZU14R160
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The vehicle headlights have failed on multiple occasions. The cause of the failures was ingress of water into the sealed headlamp assembly. The problem was reported to Toyota. Toyota took no action regarding the reports. The entire headlight assembly was replaced three (3) times at our expense. The problem persists. Attached is a photograph of the second (replaced) clearly showing water inside the headlight assembly. The current (most recent replacement) has also experienced water ingress and is available for inspection. The subject vehicle was inspected by three different body shops (two if which are authorized Toyota shops). It was confirmed by all three shops that there is no vehicle design feature that could cause water ingress in the headlamp assembly. This is a serious safety issue and has been brought to Toyota's attention with no response.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-24
- VIN: JTEBU14R968
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The frame is corroded and rusted to the point that it’s not safe to drive. This was discovered by our service technician when we had the vehicle inspected for a rattling noise in the rear. I reached out to Toyota and was told that no problems are available regarding this issue. I have maintained my 4Runner meticulously and timely since I purchased brand new. There is no rust on the body, just the frame.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-05
- VIN: JTEBT17R268
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My 2006 4Runner Toyota frame is rusted and falling into pieces. From the rear especially and underneath. I’m scared if someone rear ends me that the impact could be life threatening due to the frame falling to pieces as I drive and the vehicle sits.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-06
- VIN: JTEBU17R560
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: My car is a 2006 Toyota 4Runner. This past summer I had a tire leaking and took it to the garage for repair. The mechanic stated that the frame is rusting out in the front right, tire rod area, and saw a pinhole. Last week I took the vehicle to get a transmission oil change. That mechanic saw that there's more rust that is spreading throughout the entire frame, worse than the area found from just a few months ago. I learned online that Toyota had purposely used cheap steel for the frame and had replaced the same frame used on other trucks such as the Tacoma and Highlander but is refusing to replace the 4Runner. These rusted out frames are affecting many 4Runners. I have a 1964 Cadillac and that frame is in better condition than the 4Runner. I'm forced to pay $15,000 to replace the frame or salvage my car. It shouldn't have come to this, especially when the same frame that was replace on other trucks isn't being replaced for mine.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-26
- VIN: JTEZU14R360
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My 17 year old son was parked and when he turned off the defrost the rear hatchback glass shattered. This scared him a lot as we do not know what happened and thankfully he was parked not driving. This is a safety and potentially dangerous issue. We purchased this used vehicle and had Toyota thoroughly inspect and update and upgrade anything he needed and they never told us this was an issue. We researched it online and it has been an issue. This should have been addressed and recalled. I brought in vehicle so that they can fix it and they are saying they won’t even though it’s their equipment defect.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-01
- VIN: JTEBT14R368
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The frame of the vehicle was corroding as if it was not sealed effectively. The frame rotted to point where vehicle began swaying on road and during mechanic check the frame bent when vehicle placed on a lift. I am original owner of vehicle and took the vehicle to local Toyota dealership for ALL scheduled maintenance. The Toyota dealer mechanics NEVER reported signs of corroding frame damage in the vehicle bumper to bumper checks during my scheduled maintenance appointments. I was never informed of any signs of rotting or corroding on the frame.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-19
- VIN: JTEBU14R668
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Under carriage and frame rust due to bad frames that caused a recall on other Toyota models that were settled, but not the 4 Runner.
SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-03
- VIN: JTEBT17R168
- Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I have a 2006 Toyota 4Runner. I also have a 2005 GMC Sierra, but this 4Runner's frame is absolutely toast, while the GMC is completely fine. Toyota issued recalls on the tacoma, tundra, and the sequoia, so why not the 4Runner? My car started swaying and violently shaking on the highway. I pulled over and looked underneath, only to see the rear section of the frame had completely disconnected. This could have caused a major accident or even death if I did not catch it soon enough. This is a MASSIVE safety issue, and if people do not know what to look for with these, Toyota will be seeing a lot of wrongful death lawsuits.
STEERING,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-27
- VIN: Jtebu14r068
- Components: STEERING,STRUCTURE
- Summary: My 4runner was purchased from a dealership and serviced there for rust related problems several times but was never told I had a serious rust problem. The problem is the frame has prematurely rusted and now the car is unsafe to drive due to the control arm rusting off the frame
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-22
- VIN: JTEBT17R568
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: Vehicle failed inspection due to rust on the frame. Bought vehicle because it is supposedly ruggedly built and for the frame to rust out when the vehicle has 103k miles and not driven off-road for more than a few times since we owned it is ridiculous. Dealer quoted $11k for the frame alone, not including labor. The fact this vehicle shares the platform with the Tacoma which was recalled for frame does not make sense. Vehicle was inspected last year (Virginia requires annual safety inspections), so given the amount of rust discovered makes me doubt whether or not the Toyota dealership did a thorough job inspecting the vehicle last year. We don't drive the vehicle that much so it doesn't make sense that it would rust som significantly.
SUSPENSION,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-26
- VIN: JTEBT14R668
- Components: SUSPENSION,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Since an inspection Oct 2021 the rust/corrosive on the frame has become. Dangerously close to rotting thru the entire frame! It’s not driven in the winter months when snow or ice melt (salt) is on the roads to prevent situations like this. With only 75,000 miles always garage kept and maintained like it’s brand new this vehicle might be able to be saved for a model in a shop class to practice welding. Something needs to be done because this ifvvjj
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-23
- VIN: JTEZT14R668
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The rear window shattered spontaneously while the rear defroster was on. There was no impact to the window and no prior chips/scratches. The tint held the shattered window together, but without the tint glass would have gone flying inside and outside the vehicle, putting passengers and cars traveling behind at risk. No warnings or issues were present for the rear window or defroster system prior to incident. The problem has been inspected by Toyota of Orlando. This problem is known to Toyota under their enhanced warranty program ZG7, but they refuse to cover the repair because the date to experience the shattering rear window has passed. There are numerous other cases reported of this issue. Toyota of Orlando confirmed this would fall under their ZG7 program, had the window shattered and brought to a dealer prior to 4/30/2018.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-21
- VIN: JTEBU14R868
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I took my car in for routine maintenance and they pointed out rust on the frame and suggested it was more than it should have and could cause a safety hazard.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-23
- VIN: JTEBT14R668
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: It’s the frame! It’s completely rotting away the corrosion is unreal it has just over 75000 miles very clean no rust any wear else but underneath is completely gone makes it so unsafe that if not fixed the vehicle will split in half and kill somebody!!!!!!!
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-20

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-04
- VIN: JTEBU14R260
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The rear window shattered and is not available for inspection because it's in a million pieces. There is now broken glass all inside the vehicle and on the ground. The car was inspected at the dealership, but not insurance. There was no warning leading up to the incident. The defroster for the rear window was on due to weather. The loud bang and sound of glass falling is how I was aware of the failure.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-20
- VIN: JTEBT14R868
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I have frame rust issues on my 2006 Toyota 4Runner. I first heard about the rust issue in 2018, I contacted Toyota and they send me to Huntington Toyota in New York to get it check. They said it's fine. A couple of weeks ago the frame cracked from rust. I've contact Toyota again and they denied the repair. It is vary obvious the frame issue was a flaw from the beginning. I like to see them replace the frame.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-28
- VIN: Jtebu14r960
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: This morning my 4Runner rear window exploded inward all over my car while I was idling in a parking lot just after having driven on the highway. I had the defrost on. I lept out of car terrified covering my head thinking I was under attack. Nobody was near me and no projectile was found inside car. I was confused all morning Until I googled exploding forerunner window and saw that they had an extended warranty that has expired in 2018. Should absolutely be a safety recall, I can only imagine what would’ve happened if that had exploded while I was driving on the highway, or with my 2 yr old son who’s car seat is now covered in broken glass. A quick search online revealed several testimonies of it exploding while driving 2006 4runner. I contacted Toyota and have a case number with them it is case number 211228002935. They said that because the warranty was expired they can’t do anything, I don’t even care about getting reimbursement for window as much as I care about them addressing this as a real safety issue and recalling it. Although I’m am shell shocked and have anxiety condition and heart Condition already, I am more worried about this happening to somebody while driving or if somebody has a more dire heart condition or severe PTSD.

This 4Runner is definitely at the front of the pack. We looked at numerous SUVs before deciding on the 4Runner. Even though the American car companies were offering 0% financing for 72 months, we decided that the Toyota quality was worth paying for. We have owned numerous vehicles from different manufacturers, American and foreign, and by far the Toyotas have been the best.
Bernhard Weimann 2025-01-04
The vehicle was well thought-out and smartly designed. The rear window that slides up and down is great for a little ventilation when desired. The lift gate closes automatically when shut slightly. The vehicle is smooth riding and very quiet. Gas mileage is good, but oddly decreases with lower outside temperature and ran best when 70 degrees-F or more. The location of the driver's window/lock controls could be mounted a little better. Cruise, tilt, and mileage center are nice.
Percival Wolff 2024-11-22
This is the first car that my wife and I both absolutely love. It was fantastic in deep snow. We also appreciate the 110 outlet located right in the center console. The power seats with 2 preset adjustments are really nice. We typically average about 17.5 miles per gallon in the city and on the highway, and about 19/20 on just the highway at 75.

I love my 4 runner! It has been so reliable over the years. I've only had to replace the water pump and battery a few times, and with routine maintenance, that's all it's needed. With 198,000 miles on it, it's still my baby and I always feel safe driving it, especially when I have my grandsons with me. Speaking of which, my daughter recently bought a big Infiniti SUV and had some issues with it. My grandson even said, 'I told you mom, you should have bought a 4 runner!' I affectionately call my truck the black pearl. Even my brother, who is usually hard to please, was impressed with it. He used it to go to a doctor's appointment after breaking his leg in a motorcycle accident and said, 'Dang, this car drives like new!' I jokingly told him to stay off that organ donor and get his own bulletproof black pearl. I can tell he's considering it. You really can't go wrong with a 4 runner!

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2005 Limited V8, especially since it's your first SUV. The X-REAS suspension and V8 engine seem to have made the transition easier for you. With the X-REAS option, the vehicle is able to stay flat on turns, even at higher speeds, which reduces lean and roll. It's great to hear that your 4Runner is more nimble than you expected and has a manageable turning radius. The V8 engine also seems to be a joy, with a satisfying snarl when the gearing allows it to stay above 2,000 RPM. Passing must be a breeze! Just be careful when cleaning the clear plastic, as it can scratch easily. Also, leaving the gate window open may result in some exhaust smell. As for MPG, it may not be the best, but I'm sure the other features make up for it. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
