The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.

The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.

For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.

As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.

The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

Is the 4Runner engine good?

The Toyota's 4.0-liter engine might be reliable, but it also reliably consumes fuel at an alarming rate. 1. Howard Armstrong 2024-11-28

I'm so glad to hear that you're okay after such a scary accident! It's amazing to hear that your Toyota 4Runner held up so well and protected you. It's no wonder that you're such a loyal Toyota customer now. Thank you for sharing your story with us!

  2. Anibal Ullrich 2024-11-27

Excellent vehicle! It's the most reliable truck I have ever owned. Currently at 102000 miles and I have only needed to do regular maintenance. The ride is what one would expect from a truck with such ground clearance. The exterior remains exceptional and the interior is of good quality with only a few ergonomic issues. I would certainly buy another 4 Runner!

  3. Nickolas Ebert 2024-11-12

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 4Runner. It's been such a reliable car for me, even with 193,000 miles on it! I've never had any issues with it, and I know a lot of people who choose 4Runners for their quality and durability. It's amazing how well these trucks hold their retail value too! I actually bought mine back in 2001 with 120,000 miles on it, and it's still going strong. I'm definitely planning on getting another 4Runner for my next vehicle.

  4. Ahmad Conroy 2024-11-09

This SUV is truly impressive in terms of reliability. With 90000 miles on the clock, it has required nothing more than regular maintenance such as filling up with gas, changing oil, belts, and tires. There have been some minor issues with the pop-up antenna, and it can be unstable in poor weather conditions unless switched to 4WD. However, changing to 4WD is a simple process. Overall, this is a fantastic car!

  5. Kim Walter 2024-11-09

This is my first foreign automobile and I have to admit, it's been trouble-free! I just love it and wouldn't own any other auto. When I'm ready to trade, I'll definitely consider getting another 4 Runner.
