2016 Toyota 4runner problems

The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

Common 2016 Toyota 4runner problems
The Toyota 4Runner, known for its reliability, has had some common problems reported by owners of the 2016 model. While these issues are relatively minor compared to other midsize SUVs, they can still affect the driving experience and overall satisfaction.
- Pulling to One Side: This issue is experienced by some 4Runner owners within the first 30,000 miles. Improper alignment is usually the source of the problem, especially if the vehicle is used off-road frequently. Getting it aligned costs $80 to $150, depending on local labor rates.
- Exhaust System Issues: These problems, including issues with the EVAP system, can occur around 15,000 miles. Diagnosing and replacing the affected sensor usually costs around $150.
- Transmission Issues: Some 2016 4Runner owners have reported transmission issues, such as rough shifting and loss of power. The culprit is either the faulty shift solenoid or throttle position sensor, both requiring a replacement to fix.
It is important to note that these issues are relatively minor compared to other midsize SUVs and lead to low repair costs. Additionally, the 2016 4Runner has received 8 minor recalls, covering load carrying labels, airbags, and a loose roof rack. None of the issues are mechanically serious, and Toyota will replace the parts on affected models for free.
In conclusion, the 2016 Toyota 4Runner is a generally reliable vehicle, but like any other vehicle, it can experience some common problems. Most of these issues are minor and can be addressed with relatively low repair costs. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these problems early on, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable driving experience.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-20
- VIN: JTEBU5JR0G5
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Toyota has a major safety issue (that they know about) relating to door lock actuators on their 4runners. Both of mine (passenger and driver side) failed within the first 55,000 miles, and there are a LOT of others who have had the same problem. The forums are littered with people reporting. However, Toyota has discouraged people from reporting the problem to them by charging an exorbitant amount for repair of such an inexpensive item (about $800 per side). When that becomes known to owners, people will just repair the items themselves. This is obviously unethical. Door lock actuators pose an obvious safety issue, both if the door remains unlocked when it is supposed to be locked, and when the door remains locked when it is supposed to be unlocked. In the latter case, following an accident where a passenger is incapacitated and the door lock cannot be reached by hand (and there's no external key slot), the only way to unlock the door is via the electronic fob. If the door lock actuator is broken, then that incapacitated passenger will be trapped in the vehicle. For the former case - and this has personally happened to me - when the door was supposed to be locked, I had an individual actually open my passenger side door and enter into my vehicle. (He was under the influence of something, and fortunately nothing happened other than a very tense situation). But the safety issue remains. I expect that the post-accident scenario is more relevant to the NHTSA's interests, however, since a KNOWN design defect could very easily lead to the death of an individual trapped in a vehicle.
POWER TRAIN,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-10-26
- VIN: Jtebu5jr7g5

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-04
- VIN: JTEBU5JR1G5
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THE DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR IS GOING OUT. THIS IS CLEARLY A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE AND YEAR MODEL. SEVERAL REVIEWS I HAVE READ STATE THAT THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE SPECIFICALLY WITH THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER DOORS. I'M NOT SURE WHY THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A MANUFACTURER ISSUE VS A OWNER/USER ISSUE. TOYOTA REALLY NEEDS TO CONSIDER A RECALL BECAUSE THIS IS NOT A CHEAP FIX.

- Date Of Incident: 2020-06-30
- VIN: JTEBU5JR8G5
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: LOCKS ON DOORS DONT WORK. COMMON PROBLEM YOU ARE AWARE OF (MORE COMPLAINTS OF THIS THAN ANY OTHER ON THIS VEHICHLE). CANT UNLOCK VEHICLE OR LOCK IT. SEVERE DANGER IF TRAPPED IN CAR. GOOGLED IT AND " SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM SWITCHING VALVE STUCK CLOSED BANK 2". FOUND OUT THERE IS A HUGE HISTORY WITH THIS PROBLEM NOT ONLY WITH MY 4RUNNER BUT WITH TACOMAS, TUNDRAS AND SEQUOIAS. WITH CERTAIN YEARS OF TUNDRAS AND SEQUIOAS, TOYOTA HAS PAID FOR THIS FIX. WHY NOT THE 4RUNNERS AND TACOMAS??SAME PROBLEM!! THIS WHOLE THING IS A BIG SHAM . IT WILL COST ABOUT $2000 PLUS FOR THIS ISSUE TO BE FIXED. WHERE I COME FROM, THIS IS ROBBERY. KNOWINGLY SELLING VEHICLES WITH A EXPENSIVE PROBLEM AND NOT RECALLING THEM TO BE FIXED.
STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

NOW THEY SAID I NEEDED NEW BRAKES AND THEN THE ABS, BRAKE, AND SKID CONTROL LIGHTS KEEP COMING ON AND OFF WHICH COINCIDES WITH A COIL/CLICK FEELING UNDER THE BRAKE AND GAS PEDAL. - Summary: THE 2016 4RUNNER TRD PRO IS A LIMITED PRODUCTION MODEL. TOYOTA SOURCE THE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS FROM AN OUTSIDE VENDOR. MY RIGHT FRONT SPRING FAILED, BREAKING I FOUR PLACES. THE CAR HAS 41,000 MILES AND HAS ONLY BEEN USED IN NORMAL HIGHWAY DRIVING -- NO OFF-ROAD. THE FRONT SPRING DESIGN IS DEFICIENT. THERE IS NO TAPER AT EITHER END OF THE COIL SPRING, LEAVING A KNIFE EDGE TOUCH THE ADJACENT COIL -- RIGHT WHERE THE SPRING BROKE. THERE ARE NUMEROUS EXAMPLES OF THE SAME PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET. THE PART WAS BACK ORDERED REQUIRING MORE THAN A WEEK TO GET IT, SUGGESTING MANY OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THE LEFT SPRING WILL LIKELY FAIL, AND THE RIGHT WILL PROBABLY FAIL AGAIN. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AFFECTING STABILITY.

STEERING,POWER TRAIN,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-08-15
- VIN: JTEBU5JR8G5
- Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN,WHEELS
- Summary: THE VEHICLE HAS HAD A MULTITUDE OF ISSUES. I AM ON MY 3RD DIFFERENT SET OF TIRES THIS YEAR (INCLUDING THE ORIGINAL TIRES). NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES THE TIRES ARE BALANCED, THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES RATHER VIOLENTLY AT CERTAIN SPEEDS. THE TIRES HAVE BEEN BALANCED AND RE-BALANCED (INCLUDING ROAD-FORCE BALANCED, ETC.). ON-LINE FORUMS INDICATE THAT MANY OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. ALSO THIS WEEK I HAVE LOST THE ABILITY TO STEER THE VEHICLE (THE STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKING AND BINDING UP). APPROXIMATELY 2 WEEKS AGO THE RIGHT FRONT CALIPER FROZE UP AND THE VEHICLE NEARLY WENT OFF THE ROAD. ALSO THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL WAS NOISY FROM THE DAY THE VEHICLE WAS NEW. TOYOTA EVENTUALLY REPLACED THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL (I BELIEVE A BAD PINION GEAR). SHORTLY AFTER THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL WAS REPLACED THE VEHICLE STARTED TO GO IN AND OUT OF 4-WHEEL DRIVE ON ITS OWN, AND WARNING LIGHTS AND CHIMES STARTED GOING OFF. THE DEALER THEN MADE REPAIRS BUT THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST ONCE OR TWICE SINCE THEN AND THE DEALER HAS REPAIRED IT EACH TIME. ALSO IN THE LAST YEAR THE TRANSMISSION STOPPED WORKING LEAVING ME STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF A 4-LANE ROAD. I EVENTUALLY WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO MOVE BUT THEN IT STARTED TO GO IN AND OUT OF 4-WHEEL DRIVE ON IT'S OWN AGAIN WITH WARNINGS AND CHIMES GOING OFF. WHENEVER THE VEHICLE STARTS TO GO IN AND OUT OF 4-WHEEL DRIVE ON ITS OWN THE SHIFTER LEVER USUALLY STARTS TO FREEZE UP AS WELL (AND YOU MAY NEED TO USE BOTH HANDS TO FORCE THE VEHICLE INTO GEAR). THE VEHICLE HAS ALSO HAD A STRONG ODOR OF ANTIFREEZE SINCE NEW COMING FROM THE RIGHT FRONT CORNER. THE DEALER HAS ADVISED THEY CANNOT LOCATE THE CAUSE. ALSO VARIOUS HEAT SHIELDS HAVE EITHER BROKEN OR FALLEN OFF SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NEW. PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT GO 4-WHEELING WITH THE VEHICLE AND IT'S METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED INCLUDING ALL SERVICE RECORDS AND RECEIPTS.

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with my beloved FJ Cruiser that I bought back in 2007. It was such a unique and cool vehicle that caught everyone's attention. I remember paying $23K for it, but my neighbors thought I paid way more because of how amazing it looked. I even added some extra features like chrome brush guards, nerf bars, and tail light guards to make it stand out even more. This car has been with me for 355K miles and it still looks as good as new with no rust or issues. I even hit a deer once at 45mph and I was completely fine. Another time, a guy rear-ended me and his car was completely totaled, but my FJ only needed a new cap on the tow hitch. I recently passed it on to my son because he's off to grad school and I'm ready for a new rig. Of course, I had to go with another Toyota because of the unbelievable longevity of my FJ. This new rig gets 21 miles/gallon just like my FJ did, but I feel even higher up in this one. I absolutely love driving it and the front end looks spectacular. The only thing I wish it had was a bit more flair. Oh, and an update - it's been 4 years and I've driven 152K miles with zero issues. I still love it just as much as the day I bought it!

I love it! This is my second one and, like the first, it's great so far. I do wish that there was a no-carpet rubber mat option or at least easily removable carpets for those of us who use it as an SUV rather than just for driving kids around town. If you're looking for a vehicle for that purpose, a Highlander or minivan might be a better fit. I used to own various American SUVs and trucks, but I got tired of sitting in the garage waiting for them to fix whatever broke next, even when it was still under warranty. The issues were often recurring ones, and warranties eventually end, leaving you to pay for repairs that can start at $500 and go way up from there. Since switching to Toyota and Honda (15 vehicles ago), I haven't had a single issue. My wife and I each drive around 35,000-40,000 miles a year, mostly for work, so we don't have time to be sitting at the dealership waiting for them to patch issues resulting from shoddy design failures and/or poor workmanship. When it comes time to trade in, our Toyota's and Honda's consistently cost us $4,000 to $6,000 less in depreciation. They hold their value if taken care of! I imagine that's a result of their dependability compared to the American vehicles we used to drive. The only complaints I have with the Toyota's and Honda's I've owned are the tires that come with the base vehicles, which are junk. I now make them take the tires off immediately and put on Michelin's. Secondly, the paint is total junk and scratches easily. GM used Dupont paints and clear coats, and there is a world of difference. Overall, I would rate the 4 Runners, Highlanders, and Pilots 10/10 if it weren't for those two glaring deficiencies. While not perfect, they are the best out there, we and 12 of our family members have found. While this one is relatively new, my wife and I have driven slightly over 1 Million miles in Honda's and Toyotas.

Looking for a car can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to trusting reviews from major sources. However, the Toyota 4runner is hands down one of the best vehicles you can buy today. While other cars may have more bells and whistles, the 4runner stands the test of time and can handle any condition with ease. It may not have the fuel efficiency or luxurious amenities of modern crossovers, but it delivers a fun, safe ride with the utmost confidence. If you're looking for a car that can handle any terrain, the 4runner is the perfect choice. I would recommend lifting it a couple of inches, getting new wheels and all-terrain tires to make it unstoppable. The 4runner is absolutely one of the best cars made today, with just the right amount of brawn and style. Don't trust the Car and Driver tester types that can't understand this type of need and segment. These guys nailed it, and I sadly think the secret is out, as I'm seeing more of them on the streets. It's the absolute best SUV if you want something to last and plow you through any condition, any time, any place. Although it would be great if it had a V8 Diesel and cornering lights, it's still an impeccable car that you won't regret buying.

I'm so glad to hear that you're loving your new 4Runner! It sounds like it's an incredibly reliable and durable vehicle that can handle anything you throw at it. Despite some reviews mentioning poor handling, it seems like this truck actually handles, accelerates, and drives really well for a body on frame truck. If you're looking for a stylish and reliable vehicle that can handle any situation for over 15 years, the 4Runner is definitely worth considering.

This 2016 Limited has only 4500 miles and belongs to my wife. We love everything about it, except for a transmission noise. We found out that this noise is common to other 4runners, as the dealer took us for a ride in a new limited with 0 miles and it also had the noise. It is a sort of tinny rattling sound coming from the transmission, which is unexpected for a tight truck like this. We were surprised that Toyota allows this. If it gets worse, we will address it. If not, we will live with the annoyance of the sound.

I love the quality and style of the 2016 Runner, but I'm not a fan of the gas mileage. I actually got better gas mileage with my 90 runner. The seats are great for heat and cooling in the front, but overall it can be an uncomfortable ride. While the engine can be sluggish when you need to get out of the way, it's important to remember that it's not meant to be a crossover SUV. As a huge Toyota fan, I think they could have done a much better job. I purchased it for its reliability, resale value, and quality. If you live in snow country, it's important to note that the automated running boards can't be used during snow and ice. Additionally, the pull-out tray in the back is not very useful and just wastes space. Nonetheless, I'm still a 4 Runner fan!
