2000 Toyota 4runner problems
The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

After taking the vehicle to a private Professional Certified Car Inspector we were told that that the passenger side Frame had a catastrophic Crack that ran 7' from front to back and over the forward facing Rear Leaf Spring Shackle Support making the vehicle unsafe for any driving. They showed us the frame damage and showed us how wire mesh and foam spray had been used in an attempt to hide it. We were scared to drive it back to the dealer (we drove very slow). We informed them of the damage and they were very rude and asked us to leave. My only goal here is to insure that this vehicle is not put on the road were it could result in death or injury.

There was nothing he can do at this point. There are many complaints of the same issues with the 2000 Toyota 4Runners with the frames rusting out. If she was driving on the highway, this could have been a lot worse and possibly someone seriously injured or death. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the frame rusting out. The only one to inspect it was my mechanic.

I'VE DONE WHAT I CAN TO SEAL AND PREVENT FURTHER RUST ON THE FRAME AFTER PURCHASE AND YET THIS STILL HAPPENS? MY TRUCK IS NO LONGER DRIVE-ABLE AS IT'S EXTREMELY UNSAFE TO HAVE MY REAR AXLE DISCONNECTED FROM THE FRAME. SO UNTIL I CAN MANAGE TO 1) FIND SOMEONE WILLING TO WELD MY FRAME 2) PAY FOR SUCH A SERVICE I AM WITHOUT A VEHICLE... I PAID $2000 FOR THIS CAR LESS THAN A YEAR AGO WITH ONLY 170K MILES ON IT.

This truck is definitely the best SUV on the market. Its styling is more truck-like than any other SUV, and it doesn't resemble a minivan like some of the others. In terms of reliability and durability, it beats everything else on the market.
-
This is the SUV for someone who still enjoys the rugged feel of driving an SUV. It drives excellently both on and off the road, and the 4Runner has a great look.
-
I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your 4Runner! It's great to know that it's been so reliable for you over the years, and that it's been able to handle your daily needs on the mountain road. I can definitely understand why you're not ready to give it up yet! While the dash may be more conservative and the stereo a bit boring, it sounds like it's been a great fit for your needs. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Toyota quality is fantastic and they have certainly delivered it with this 4Runner. The transmission is powerful and smooth, and you can really feel the quality of the product when you shift gears. This is actually my third Toyota and every single one has lasted me a lifetime.
-
This is my second 4Runner. The first one was a SR5 Sport, and now I have the Limited. I have driven over 20K miles in one year and the only things I've had to replace are the tires and the oil and filter. This is a real truck/SUV, not based on a car unibody design. Although I am tall and the seats feel a bit short to me, this vehicle is the best in its class for daily driving, camping, and off-road adventures! It would be great to have more power for towing, but overall, I love the 4Runner. It is worth noting that up to MY2003, this is the last class of 4Runner made in Japan, which says something. I prefer the classic body style over the new

The Toyota may be reliable, but it can come at a high cost. In my opinion, Toyota has overpriced their vehicles compared to other makes that offer more luxury features for less money.
Leone Wilkinson 2024-07-21
I have resolved the issue of brake vibration by replacing the rotors and pads three times. I discovered a service memo from TOYOTA on this problem, which I presented to the dealer and prevented them from charging me. I am confident in the solution I have implemented.
Edwardo Mayer 2024-05-17
I chose the 4Runner over other SUVs due to Toyota's reputation for quality. However, I have experienced issues with the clutch, which has been replaced four times by the dealer. After the last replacement, the factory representative informed me that the dealer had installed it incorrectly. Unfortunately, the issue has resurfaced six months later. While this has been a frustrating experience, I remain confident in Toyota's commitment to resolving the issue and ensuring customer satisfaction.

There's plenty of space, but the ride is a bit bumpy.
