2022 Toyota 4runner problems
The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-03
- VIN: JTERU5JR1N6
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: The right CV joint traverses up and down. Once warmed up it loses concentricity and the steering wheel begins to shake. It does not stop until I pull off the highway The shake is completely gone when the vehicle is in 4 wheel drive. There are numerous complaints regarding this. I have taken it back to the dealer and participated in "road tests" and the steering did in fact shake and the tech stated "this is normal". This is not and it is hard to drive in a straight line. Google "4Runner steering wheel shake/wobble", thousands of complaints and Toyota refuses to replace the bearing. This is disappointing as it is covered for 6 years , 60,000miles under the powertrain warranty, yet the dealer is insistent on stringing me along until the warranty expires. The vehicle is available for inspection and I have videos to send as well if needed.

WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-12
- VIN: JTEPU5JR7N6
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: Static tire failure of the left rear tire. OEM Nitto ridge grappler dot# [XXX] ; 265/70r17. Parked car and was inside a church for an hour. No issues with tire, all 4 tpms pressures read 37 psi. When returning to the vehicle noticed the flat, changed on the spot with the full size spare. It appears as though the sidewall structure/belt failed, taking the rubber with it. Tear is on the inside of the mounted wheel, and is inconsistent with a cut or puncture from a foreign object. I will save the failed tire if you guys would like it for analysis. I want to emphasize, no additional damage to the structure from vehicle movement, satic failure, and the belt was stressed/cycled once as the vehicles weight was lowered as air pressure went to zero and removed as the vehicle was raised for removal and replacement. Vehicle has never been used for 4 wheeling, and no more than a few miles accrued from off pavement driving. Only tow mileage is approximately 400 to 500 with a dual jet ski trailer (gross trailer weight: 2500 lbs) Thanks, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-16
- VIN: JTERU5JR1N6
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
- Summary: Around 50-55mph, shake can be felt in the steering wheel. Possible needle bearing? Common complaint yet Toyota states it is operating "normal". Steering wheel shake is not normal. This has occurred since I purchased the vehicle.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-14
- VIN: JTELU5JR1N6
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While doing approximately 65 on clear, sunny, and dry conditions heading north bound on I-65 with no traffic my sunroof spontaneously exploded outwards with enough force to shake the whole cabin. Luckily my sunshade was closed so no shards entered the vehicle at that time. The remaining glass was convex, sticking outwards. The dealer’s service advisor told me he had 8 customers with this same issue in the last 2 weeks. Toyota needs to consider the frequency of these events and declare a manufacturing defect and / or issue a safety recall.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-04
- VIN: JTERU5JR8N6
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: My daughter was seated on the passenger side rear of my vehicle. Her seatbelt was on correctly and we were slowing down to pull into the driveway. My daughter said her seatbelt was stuck and wouldn't loosen. She unbuckled the seatbelt and tried to loosen it and remove it from around her waist. She was stuck in the seatbelt, it would not loosen even the slightest bit. I called 911 and they sent the fire department out. They could not get it to loosen in any way and they had to cut my seatbelt to remove my child. My vehicle is a 2022 and I don't understand how this is a normal safety feature. My child was stuck in her seatbelt with no other way out than to cut the seat belt.
STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-18
- VIN: JTEMU5JR0N6
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
- Summary: Aggressive steering wheel vibration from 55-70 mph from the day I drove the vehicle off the lot. Ignoring the vibration, Toyota claims this 4runner is operating as it is manufactured to do so. This is causing unnecessary wear on the steering and/or suspension. Without a visual warning sign from the vehicle, this could cause catastrophic failure while driving, ultimately putting the driver and other drivers at risk while on the road. Additionally, the vehicle can be hard to control due to the vibration, which could cause excess swerving. Toyota claims it is the tires. Toyota issued me two different sets of tires and the issue persists. It is not the tires, it is a manufacturing defect that is a safety hazard and reduces the value of the vehicle.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-04
- VIN: JTEKU5JR1N6
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: We were driving down the interstate, no other cars, trucks, etc anywhere near us, and the sunroof of our 2022 Toyota 4Runner spontaneously shattered. We were lucky that we had the shade closed on the sunroof when we experienced the gunshot like blast. We opened our sunroof shade and had glass fall down on us. We are so lucky that we had the shade closed and that there were no other cars near us, as this surely would have put lives at risk. We spoke to the Toyota dealership service manager where we bought the car the following day, which is about an hour from our house. He directed us to bring it in. When we arrived at the scheduled date/ timeframe, he informed us that it would take a day or so to do diagnostic tests- but he could not provide us with a car.(He knew that we were driving over an hour to bring it in.) We obviously could not get home without a car. They directed us to try going to a different dealer. We went to a Toyota dealer on the way home, 1/2 hour from our house. They did not want to deal with the car and said we need to take it back to the dealer we bought it from. He also stated that he'd never heard of this happening and that it must have been a rock, which is similar to what the first dealership said. I've read on-line now that our experience is not unique to us. We are confident that we did not have a chip or crack in our sunroof prior to this happening. This incident definitely puts people at risk.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-30
- VIN: JTEMU5JR9N6
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I have had 3 cracks on my windshield in the 8 months of owning this car I was wondering if there is any structural recall to this vehicle
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-26
- Number Of Injuries: 4
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JTENU5JR1N6
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I was slowing down with traffic going about 30mph and was rear ended by a small suv going about 50-60mph. I was then hit on the right side by car who was originally behind us. I was thrown forward and then to the left. The emergency assist call was activated but not one of the airbags went off. I ended up with back and neck pain and injury. My passengers all suffered whiplash and one hit her head on the dashboard causing a concussion.
STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-15
- VIN: JTEPU5JR0N6
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
- Summary: Yes vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Steering wheel/steering column/wheels tires/suspension/differential/drive shaft/: steering wheel shimmies, shakes, vibrates, wobbles and usually occurs at 55-68 MPH typically closer to the 62-64 MPH range and "pulls"/steers very hard to the right during this time. No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. This could possibly cause me or another driver to lose control of the vehicle and cause an accident that might hurt me or someone else. The vehicle has been inspected by the Toyota dealership more than 6 times in 6 months/6k miles. The problem has been confirmed by the dealer. Wheels and tires have been balanced and road force balanced several times. Alignment has been performed several times to varying degrees of castering and adjusting wheels all within manufactures specs. Correct tire pressure is used. Wheels and Tires were swapped with another set of wheels and tires from the same year, make, model, and tread depth and it did NOT fix the issue. No one can fix the shake and wobble in the steering wheel. I purchased this Certified Pre-owned vehicle with 11k miles on it and now has just over 20k miles. This has been a problem since approx. 12.5k miles. I took it to the dealership service dept for the first time around 14k miles. The dealership service department has opened 2 tech cases on this and I am set to meet with a Toyota Field Rep this week. My hope is that they can determine what defect is causing this to happen. There are NUMEROUS reports of this happening (just google "Toyota 4 runner shimmy in the steering wheel") and no one can fix it. Is it going to take someone getting hurt or dying for this issue to be resolved?
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-07
- VIN: JTENU5JR5N6
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Suddenly had difficult time stopping the vehicle without "pumping" the brakes. Brake pedal went to the floor, and car would not hold stopped. There were no warning lamps during the 400 miles of driving from western NY to Michigan for a Holiday with family. Had this happened as I was waiting in line on the downhill side of the Blue Water Bridge in Michigan, it would have been quite difficult to keep in line, not touching the car in front of us. We felt lucky to have discovered the problem while going to run an errand later. We saw no external leaks to the brake system (no fluid leaking) while trying to investigate what could be happening. The problem was reported to me as a leak in the brake master cylinder which was replaced under warranty at a Toyota dealer in Grand Blanc MI. It took two weeks to get the vehicle repaired (which presented other challenges to us to deal with, as we were only visiting Michigan at the time). The vehicle had 12,600 miles on it at the time that the brakes stopped holding.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-26
- VIN: JTERU5JR2N6
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Driving home today, I felt that the brake was not performing properly. When I would stop at stop signs, slow down for traffic, or stop at red lights, the brake pedal felt spongey and the vehicle would not come to a complete stop. As I would step on the brake pedal, the vehicle would slow down, but continue to roll, while the pedal would continue to go farther and farther down until I could not press it any farther. When I made it home, I parked it in the garage, and even with the vehicle turned off, the brake pedal goes all the way to the floor.
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-13
- Fire: 1
- VIN: JTERU5JR9N5
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: The contact owns a 2022 Toyota 4Runner. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed on the freeway, the vehicle lost motive power. The 4WD error and various other unknown warning lights and messages were illuminated. The contact managed to pull over and stated that smoke was seen coming from underneath the hood and that once he opened the hood, there were flames coming from the airbox, and he pulled out the air filter. The contact stated that he managed to extinguish the fire. The fire department arrived after the fire was extinguished, and there was no report completed. The vehicle was then towed to a local dealer; however, the mechanic made the contact aware that the manufacturer would send out an inspector. The inspector made the contact aware of a faulty unknown sensor; however, the vehicle remained at the dealer awaiting further diagnosis and repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 47,000.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-14
- VIN: JTESU5JR7N6
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Groaning/Grinding from end Differential? Bushing? Needle Bearing? Especially in cold low temperatures
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-10
- VIN: JTERU5JR8N6
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Nov. 10 Trailer light connection on vehicle would not stay connected. I got under car to make connection using tape to keep the flap from coming down and pulling connection loose. Drove to Yazoo City to deliver lawn mower and on return the connection had come loose again. Nov.14 went to Jackson Toyota for help. Asked help from my salesman. He sent me to service where I asked 3 service people for help. Finally, after I got extremely upset at the overall lack of knowledge as to where this connection is or how it works, I was sent to Ricks Pro Trucks in Gluckstat, Ms where I got help. My trailer had recently been rewired so it was not at fault like dealership suggested. I got down to check another vehicle like mine and it had the same impossible connection. I must have lights to legally pull my trailer on the highway. I believe the design and placement of this part on these vehicles is faulty thus making this an on road danger for this particular model vehicle.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-22
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JTERU5JRXN6
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I was hit in drivers side by a vehicle that ran a red light, going approx 40 mph. The force of the collision pushed me into another vehicle. My car was new in March, had 7100 miles on it, and none of the airbags deployed, sidecurtain or steering wheel. I suffered a concussion and severe bruising.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-13
- VIN: JTETU5JR0N6
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: On numerous occasions, while driving in a straight line with our adaptive cruise control on, our 2022 Toyota 4Runner will automatically actuate the vehicle's brakes when approaching a slower or stationary vehicle that is either to the left or right, but not directly in front of our vehicle. This sudden speed reduction has almost caused any following vehicles to almost collide with the back of our 4Runner. It has happened to us at speeds between 30 MPH and 65 MPH. When it happens, one has to quickly tap the brakes to deactivate the adaptive cruise control then get on the accelerator pedal to avoid a collision with any following vehicle. We have taken our 4Runner into two separate Toyota dealerships on three separate occasions to have this problem diagnosed and repaired. The first dealership told us repeatedly that there is no issue. The second dealership pulled data from our vehicle and made an adjustment to the 4Runner's forward camera system. Unfortunately, the day after this adjustment was made our 4Runner irrationally applied the brakes when we were driving 35 MPH on a straight road with no other vehicle in front of us. The problem is not fixed. We are now waiting for a response from Toyota Corporate.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-26
- VIN: JTERU5JR2N6
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I purchased a 2022 Toyota 4RUNNER and 9 days later the wiring harness was destroyed by rodents most like squirrels. Toyota switched to soy based wire insulation without taking precautions in the design to protect the wiring from rodents attracted to the insulation material. The resulting damage cost $8000 to repair and it will take months for the harness to be in stock. This failure caused all safety features to be disabled leaving the vehicle without standard safety functions.

Disclaimer: I must admit that I am quite partial towards Toyota. In my opinion, they offer the best value for your money, even though they may be a bit pricier. I have always been a fan of the 4Runner and have spent a considerable amount of time admiring them. I have also had the pleasure of owning a few Camrys and have come to appreciate their simplicity and reliability. Recently, I decided to trade in my beautiful 2017 Camry XLE with heated leather seats for a stunning 2022 4Runner TRD Sport. I must confess that I am quite picky when it comes to cars, and I was determined to find the perfect one. It had to have heated leather seats, and I preferred a mostly black exterior. Luckily, I found exactly what I was looking for at the Toyota dealership. Although the dealership was a bit questionable, I am thrilled with the SUV that I drove away with. It is much better than the Bronco that I was initially considering, and I have my husband to thank for suggesting that we visit the Toyota dealership. I drove it home nervously, as one does when they purchase a new car, but I am delighted with my purchase. The black leather seats and black interior are exactly what I wanted, and I even managed to negotiate heated seats into the deal. The exterior is black and can be a bit challenging to keep clean, but the new suspension is phenomenal, and it drives better than my 2007 Camry. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase, and I am sure that I will drive this 4Runner for many years to come. However, I am also considering getting an old beater to improve my gas mileage. I would give Toyota 100/100 stars once again!

I recently purchased a new 2022 4 Runner limited, upgrading from my 2006 Limited. In my opinion, the 2022 model lacks the power that the 8 cylinder engine provided in the previous model. Additionally, the gas mileage is almost identical to my 2006 with the v-8. I believe that keeping the 8 cylinder engine would have been a better decision. However, I still appreciate the features and quality of the 2022 model.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to bring to your attention a couple of issues I've been having with my 4R. The rear window wiper has been causing some trouble for a while now, as it doesn't seem to clean the left side of the window properly. Additionally, I've noticed that the headlights are a bit dim and have an overhanging eyelid that covers part of the headlight. This has made it difficult to see when making turns, especially at night. I absolutely love my 4R, but I wanted to make sure you were aware of this safety concern before making a purchase decision. If possible, I would highly recommend taking it for a test drive on a hilly road at night to see how it performs. Thanks for your time!

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We're sorry to hear that your new 4Runner didn't meet your expectations. It sounds like the seats and backup camera have been causing some discomfort and inconvenience. We appreciate your feedback on the manual lift and will take it into consideration for future models. We hope that despite these issues, you're still enjoying the typical 4Runner ride. Thank you again for your honest review!

I recently rented a 2022 Toyota 4 Runner for a 7-day road test in Florida, putting on 300 miles. While the vehicle had some areas for improvement, I found it to be a decent ride overall. The door handle had a bit of a hollow sound, but that didn't detract from the experience. The gas pedal required a bit more pressure than I'm used to, but it wasn't a major issue. The 5-speed transmission is a bit outdated, but it still got the job done. The A/C and heater required some manual adjustment, but that's not uncommon in many vehicles. The seats were a bit hard, but that's a matter of personal preference. The dash and console were made of hard plastic, but that's not a dealbreaker for me. The floor shifter had a few slots that took some getting used to, but it wasn't a major issue. The gas cap was a bit old-fashioned, but it didn't take too long to remove. The tailgate required some manual effort to close, but it wasn't a major inconvenience. Overall, the 2022 Toyota 4 Runner is a decent vehicle that could benefit from some updates and improvements. The car also had some hi-tech features, such as adaptive cruise control, which I have on my Tahoe. I decided to try out Toyota's version, but unfortunately, I found it to be quite bad. It had a slow response and stayed too far behind the vehicle in front of me. Additionally, it did not come to a complete stop, but instead just beeped to tell me to slam on my brakes. In comparison, my Tahoe comes to a complete stop and then rolls forward 3 feet before stopping again, just like a driver would do. It's flawless! I find it surprising that some people still buy cars with 8 or 10-speed transmissions. Perhaps they don't check out the competition and instead rely on reviews written by writers who may be biased towards foreign cars.

Hey there! I just picked up this 2022 limited yesterday, so I'll have to update this review in a few weeks. However, I did notice that the wiring receptacle for the trailer is a bit inconveniently located. It's not next to the receiver, but rather off to the left of the spare tire under the vehicle. You have to lay down to open the cover and plug in a connector, which can be a bit of a hassle. I'm planning on purchasing a pigtail and finding a way to leave it plugged in to make things easier.
